Complete Biography of General Pershing

Over a century has passed since Pershing's birth and more than fifty years since his death, yet his memory stands tall in the land and his name rings firm in the historical echo of his times. General Pershing is the First World War, and the proof of this lies in the fact that after over fifty years no other general's name comes readily to mind when that war is mentioned.

Pershing was born into the opening fanfare of the golden age of Grant, Lee, Sherman, and Jackson -- four names that will stand linked forever before the fact of the preserved Union. Pershing's earliest toddler memories were of Southern bushwhackers raiding his hometown and shooting up the village. He was five years old when Lee surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse.

He grew to manhood and as a junior officer served under Generals Nelson A. Miles, Adna R. Chaffee, John M. Schofield, and William R. Shafter- - four men indelibly associated with the march of America across the shrinking plains, to Cuba and the Orient, while the 19th century wound its way out and the century of great wars came upon us.

In the First World War, however, Pershing played his part without peer-standing alone in his time as history would have it, and with no one to share the fame.

Pershing grew very old and lived on to see the new men come to flower -- MacArthur and Eisenhower, Patton and Stilwell, all of whom he outranked by an active commission as General of the armies by Act of Congress as long as he lived -- but never once did he attempt to put finger in the New War pie. Like a wise old soldier, he spent the Second World War quietly fading away.

In 1944, when Pershing was in Walter Reed Hospital, the Old Man was eighty-four years old, and he had been living up on top of the hospital in his specially-built set of quarters for the three years that the Second World War had been going on. The Old War was pretty far back in history by this time; yet it was a mark of the stature of Pershing that his nurses scheduled receiving hours each morning for seldom less than three or four people who felt impelled, by right of past association and present desire, to call and pay their respects when passing through Washington. It was a mark of the gallantry that never dies in old cavalrymen, one supposes, that the comelier nurses would grin at times and rub themselves where they swore they'd been pinched.

Of all men of his time, he seemed to have an unerring instinct for just where he fitted in the scheme of things. When age came upon him, he met it with the cool dignity that marked his intercourse with even his close friends. He made no effort to inflict his aging mind on the nation as a senior citizen. He wrote no carping, critical books. He did not sell his retired sword to commerce. He was, in essence, a dirt soldier who came up the hard way, but who loved his profession dearly enough to continue the pursuit of excellence in it-- the hard way.

So when his time came, he folded his cloak about him and quietly departed, almost a stranger to the new war that had come upon his country, but forever a part of the careful binding to meet threats that will bring victory once more when the time comes.

Pershing's father, John Fletcher Pershing, was a boss tracklayer for the North Missouri Railroad at Warrenton, Missouri, where he met Ann Elizabeth Thompson. On 22 March 1859, they were married. Soon after, they moved to a shanty on the farm of Judge Meredith Brown near Laclede. John Joseph was born there on 13 September 1860.

When the Civil War began, John Fletcher moved to Laclede and bought Lomax's General Store. He bought two farms, one 80 acres, the other 160 acres, and a lumberyard. He also became the sutler for the 18th Missouri Volunteer Infantry, then quartered at Laclede.

In 1865, a "select school for small children" was opened in Laclede. John and his brother, James attended this school. Between 1870 and 1873, John Fletcher lost the greater part of his land holdings in speculation, and in 1876 became a traveling salesman. During this time, John Joseph worked on his father's farm and attended school, and later taught the Negro school at Laclede. Throughout this sometimes difficult period, the future General Pershing demonstrated the qualities which would always be paramount in his life: self-possession, competence, level-headedness, dependability, and the ability to see things through.

In October 1879, Pershing became the teacher of the school at Prairie Mound, nine miles from Laclede. During the summers of 1880, 1881, and 1882, he went to the State Normal School at Kirksville, Missouri. In the spring of 1882, Pershing saw an announcement for a competitive examination for an appointment to West Point. He had no desire to become a soldier but he saw an opportunity for an excellent education. On the advice of his sister, he took the exam

RP post in Bangkok says Pinoy drug mules using Thailand as transit point

The Philippine Embassy in Thailand said the Southeast Asian state is being used as a transit point by Filipino drug mules to illegally transport drugs in other countries in Asia.

A West African drug gang is believed to be behind a large-scale operation where Filipinos are allegedly hired as drug mules, the embassy noted.

According to the embassy, Thai immigration and police authorities arrested three Filipinas at the Suvarnab-humi Airport for the

possession of between two and five kilograms of cocaine on three separate occasions on March 22, April 13, and May 4. Two came from Peru, while one arrived from Brazil.

At the Thai-Myanmar border, two Filipinos were recently arrested on May 3 for possession of over five kilograms of methamphetamine.

In June last year, a Filipina was arrested for possession of 13 kilograms of marijuana at the Thai-Laos border. The Filipina was told that she was just carrying slimming tea.

Following these incidents, the embassy has strongly warned Filipinos against accepting and carrying packages or items to Thailand in exchange for money.

“The embassy gives this warning especially to those approached by complete strangers or new acquaintances offering money in exchange for transporting certain packages on their behalf,” it said.

In Thailand, death penalty is meted to persons carrying Category I narcotics, such as heroin.

The Department of Foreign Affairs is working with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and other agencies in a concerted effort to combat the victimization of Filipinos by international drug rings.

Recently, the PDEA initiated and executed a successful operation which resulted in the neutralization of an international drug trafficking organization operating in the Philippines and in neighboring Asian countries. Working with foreign law and drug enforcement authorities, the PDEA-led operation led to the arrest of nine male Nigerians, one female Thai, one female Malaysian and two Filipinas, as well as the seizure of two kilograms of cocaine and one kilogram of heroin in China.

A Philippine task force to crack down drug syndicates using Filipino drug mules is composed of the PDEA as chairman; the DFA as co-chairman; and the Department of Labor and Employment, the Bureau of Immigration, the Bureau of Customs, the National Bureau of Investigation, the Philippine Information Agency, the Manila International Airport Authority and the Philippine Tourism Authority as members.

They are now developing and executing programs and strategies against the recruitment of Filipinos as international drug couriers that victimize overseas Filipinos, and promoting close coordination among government agencies towards a more aggressive apprehension and prosecution of members of drug trafficking syndicates operating in the Philippines.

Earl (Martin Lawrence) and Hank (Steve Zahn) can't seem to escape each other. They met on opposite sides of the law during a routine traffic stop but now they've been thrown together to bust a million dollar smuggling operation. As hare-brained as their plan may be, these unlikely partners might just solve a crime... if they don't kill each other first.

Although it's enjoyable as a brainless diversion, National Security is one of those forgettable entertainments that denies its own considerable potential. It's a police action comedy in the mold of Beverly Hills Cop, tailored to the buddy-flick formula and laced with racial tensions of the post-Rodney King era. It's set in Los Angeles, where dedicated cop Hank (Steve Zahn) does jail time for allegedly beating Earl (Martin Lawrence), whose only real assailant was an overzealous bumblebee. As fate and lazy screenwriting would have it, the two adversaries reunite as security guards, teaming up to crack a team of violent smugglers led by bleached-blonde Eric Roberts (further proof that this movie's got nothing new to offer). Routine stunts distract from the comedy's mostly untapped resource: Lawrence pointedly riffs on racial profiling, and his prolific ad-libs play well against Zahn's by-the-book straight man. If their partnership had been allowed to develop more believably, National Security might have been more than a blip on the box-office radar. --Jeff Shannon

Fresh from college with dreams of photojournalism adventures and part-time gigs as a stringer for the Associated Press and the Spokesman-Review, I gulped hard and bought an EOS-1, grip, and two L-series lenses, the 20-35/2.8 and 80-200/2.8. I worked that camera and those lenses hard for years. From Spokane, up to Ruby Ridge, all around Alaska, down the Oregon Coast, and then up and down the U.S. West Coast on a sailing ship; I shot hundreds of thousands of images with this camera. I froze the LCD screen during a -75? blizzard in Prudhoe Bay and melted the lens hood during a house fire in Coos Bay. I escaped a calving glacier by clawing my way up a muddy riverbank with the camera in my hand, (it still bears the scars). It's been up in helicopters, and down in submarines.

For the past few years it's been collecting dust in its old tattered Domke bag down in my basement, a relic of the film age. I moved on from professional shooting years ago and I've been playing around with digital point-and-shoots, (Canon G1, G2, G5 and G9), and I hate to admit that I got used to looking at a little screen instead of peering through a viewfinder. I settled for limited lens range, poor low-light performance, and noisy images shot through glass the size of coins. Over the past year or two I've started to long for longer glass, wider fields of view, and bigger apertures. My love of wide-angle shooting kept me from the cropped-sensor cameras and my bank account kept me from the full-frame bodies. When the 5D Mark II came out I grimaced at the price, but lusted for the resolution, low-light prowess, and full-frame goodness. I eyed my savings account and took the plunge.

Now I have another camera that should give me many years of happy shooting. I'll never part with the old EOS-1, its grip polished smooth by my hands. The 20-35/2.8 lens, always my go-to lens, is missing both rubber grip rings long since torn free. The AF/MF switch is busted and the MF ring grinds. There's dust and who-knows-what between all of the elements, and it just doesn't focus like it used to. The old combo is going to hang in my office as a testament to the adventures of my youth.

It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models. In what follows, this report begins by summarizing the world exporter's market for acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber (nbr). The total level of exports on a worldwide basis is based on a model that aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. From there, each country represents a percent of the world market. This market is served from a number of competitive countries of origin. La leggenda narra che nel 460 a.C., il Campidoglio fu occupato dai quattrocento armati del sabino Appio Erdonio che, con questo colpo di mano, tento di farsi padrone della citta. Essi, residenti sul Quirinale, avevano ottenuto il Campidoglio per il tradimento della romana Tarpea, che avrebbe aperto loro le porte. I Sabini pero l'avrebbero comunque uccisa seppellendola sotto i loro scudi. In realta il nome di Tarpea deve essere piu antico della leggenda, ed era la divinita tutelare del Mons Tarpeius, ovvero il Capitolium stesso, e pare che la statua della divinita sorgesse da una catasta di armi, come un trofeo, che ispiro poi la fantasia dei poeti.

Erdonio vi resistette per quattro giorni, fu infine vinto, catturato ed ucciso dai Romani guidati dal console Valerio Publicola. Dopo la guerra contro i Sabini, Campidoglio e Quirinale furono inseriti nella citta.

L'antica via di accesso carrozzabile del Campidoglio era il Clivus Capitolinus, continuazione della Via Sacra, che iniziava nei pressi del tempio di Saturno: ne e visibile ancora un tratto notevole dopo il portico degli Dei Consenti; piu avanti la strada e franata con gran parte delle pendici meridionali della collina; probabilmente proseguiva in linea retta, girando poi per sboccare davanti al tempio di Giove. Antichissimo era l'auguraculum o recinto augurale, spazio orientato secondo i punti cardinali e consacrato, dal quale si prendevano gli auspici. Nel 216 a.C. vi venne edificato anche un tempio dedicato alla Concordia (diverso da quello del Foro Romano).

Il nome del colle deriva probabilmente dal tempio di Giove Capitolino (Capitolium), o tempio di Giove Ottimo Massimo, o Giove Capitolino, dedicato alla triade capitolina (Giove, Giunone e Minerva), che anticamente occupava la seconda sommita ed era solo un altare. Il tempio vero e proprio venne iniziato, secondo la tradizione, da Tarquinio Prisco, continuato da Tarquinio il Superbo e terminato solo all'inizio della Repubblica. Vi si svolgeva il sacrificio finale delle cerimonie trionfali, che precedentemente si concludevano al tempio di Giove Feretro, risalente addirittura a Romolo, il cui nome si riferisce forse alla quercia, l'albero sacro che cresceva sul colle e al quale Romolo appese le armi prese in combattimento al re nemico (spolia opima). Inoltre il tempio di Giove inglobava i santuari di Terminus e Iuventas, che, secondo il tradizionalismo religioso romano, si preferi incorporare piuttosto che distruggere. L'edificio subi numerosi restauri e ricostruzioni. Fu proprio durante le opere di scavo delle sue fondazioni che fu ritrovato un teschio umano attribuito dai contemporanei ad Aulo Vipsania (o Vibenna), uno dei comites dell'eroe Mastarna (Servio Tullio, l'altro essendo suo fratello Celio Vipsania); da questo si ipotizza che abbia preso nome l'intero colle: caput Auli da cui capitolium.

All'epoca dell'invasione gallica del 390 a.C. il Campidoglio fu sede di uno degli episodi piu famosi, quello delle oche capitoline, tenute nel recinto sacro del tempio di Giunone, che con il loro starnazzare svelarono il tentativo di assalto notturno dei Galli. In ricordo dell'episodio venne eretto nel 345-344 a.C. il tempio di Giunone Moneta (moneta o "ammonitrice"). Presso il tempio di Giunone aveva sede la prima zecca (officina moneta dal nome del tempio, da cui deriva il termine odierno di "moneta").

Il Campidoglio in eta repubblicanaSubito dopo l'assedio gallico del 390 a.C. le difese furono rafforzate con un muro in corrispondenza della depressione centrale, che fungeva da opera di sostruzione (cioe di contenimento delle pendici) e da fortificazione. Esso pero cadde presto in disuso dopo la costruzione delle mura serviane nel 378 a.C.. In questo muro difensivo si aprivano una serie di porte: una sul lato verso il Foro Romano (porta Saturnia, presso il tempio di Saturno, o porta Capitolini (mons), o porta Tarpeia, o ancora porta Pandana, ovvero "sempre aperta" per i Sabini in seguito all'accordo tra Romolo e Tito Tazio), permetteva l'accesso dal clivus Capitolinus, la via seguita dai cortei dei trionfatori. Una seconda porta (porta Catularia) si apriva sul lato opposto per un asse viario in salita (clivus) proveniente dal Campo Marzio, mentre una terza porta (porta Carmentalis verso sud-ovest) permetteva l'ingresso della scalinata dei Centum gradus, il cui nome evoca i cento gradini che scendevano dal Fornix Calpurnius sul lato della Rupe Tarpea, verso il teatro di Marcello. Altri nomi di porte del Campidoglio ci sono tramandati dalle fonti (porta Flumentana, forse verso nord-ovest, e porta Fontinalis o forse Ratumenna a nord-est).

Un ulteriore accesso dal Foro Romano era costituito dalla scalinata delle Scalae Gemoniae, che salivano all' Arx in corrispondenza forse della scalinata attuale, passando tra il Carcer e il tempio della Concordia; sopra di esse venivano gettati i corpi dei giustiziati della vicina prigione per il delitto di lesa maesta sotto l'imperator

Fu iniziata nel 1064 dall'architetto Buscheto, con la decima del bottino dell'impresa pisana in Sicilia nel porto di Palermo contro i Musulmani (1063), vi si fondono elementi stilistici diversi, classici, lombardo-emiliani, bizantini ed in particolare islamici, a riprova della presenza internazionale dei mercanti pisani a quei tempi. In quello stesso anno veniva iniziata anche la ricostruzione della Basilica di San Marco a Venezia, per cui puo anche darsi che vi fosse stata all'epoca una rivalita tra le due Repubbliche marinare a creare il luogo di culto piu bello e sontuoso.

Nel 1092 passa ad essere nota come Primaziale, essendo stato conferito il titolo di Primate all'arcivescovo Daiberto da Papa Urbano II, onorificenza oggi soltanto formale.

La Cattedrale fu consacrata nel 1118 dal Papa Gelasio II, appartenente al ramo pisano dei Gaetani (o Caetani), conti di Terriccio e d'Oriseo, ma gia nella prima meta del XII secolo fu ampliato sotto la direzione dell'architetto Rainaldo cui spetta il progetto dell'attuale facciata, conclusa dalle maestranze guidate dagli scultori Guglielmo e Biduino.

L'aspetto attuale del complesso edificio e il risultato di ripetute campagne di restauro succedutesi in diverse epoche. I primi radicali interventi seguirono il disastroso incendio del 1595, a seguito del quale furono eseguite le tre porte bronzee della facciata, opera di scultori della bottega del Giambologna, tra cui Gasparo Mola; a partire dal Settecento inizio il progressivo rivestimento delle pareti interne con grandi dipinti su tela, i "quadroni" con Storie di beati e santi pisani, eseguiti dai principali artisti dell'epoca grazie all'iniziativa di alcuni cittadini che si autofinanziarono creando un'apposita attivita commerciale.

Gli interventi successivi si ebbero nel corso dell'Ottocento ed interessarono sia le decorazioni interne sia quelle esterne, che in molti casi, specie per le sculture della facciata furono sostituite da copie (gli originali sono al Museo dell'Opera del Duomo).

L'edificio che in origine era a croce greca con all'incrocio dei bracci una grossa cupola, oggi e a croce latina a cinque navate con abside e transetto a tre navate, all'interno suggerisce un effetto spaziale simile a quello delle grandi moschee islamiche, grazie all'uso di archi a sesto rialzato o a sesto acuto, all'alternanza di fasce in marmo bianco e nero e all'insolita cupola ellittica. La presenza dei due matronei rialzati nelle navate, con le solide colonne monolitiche di granito, e un chiaro segno di influenza bizantina.

La ricchissima decorazione comprende marmi multicolori, mosaici e numerosi oggetti di bronzo provenienti dal bottino di guerra, fra cui il Grifo utilizzato come est del tetto, preso a Palermo nel 1061. Gli archi a profilo acuto fanno riferimento ad infuenze musulmane e del meridione d'Italia. La facciata di marmo grigio e bianco, decorata con inserti di marmo colorato, fu edificata da mastro Rainaldo. I tre portali sottostanno a quattro ordini di loggette divise da cornici con tarsie marmoree, dietro i quali si aprono monofore, bifore e trifore. Le porte della facciata in bronzo massiccio furono realizzate da diversi artisti fiorentini nel XVII secolo. Contrariamente a quanto si potrebbe pensare, fin dai tempi antichi i fedeli entravano nel Duomo attraverso la Porta di San Ranieri, posta sul retro nell'omonimo transetto, di fronte al campanile. Questo perche i nobili della citta si recavano alla cattedrale venendo da via Santa Maria che conduce proprio a quel transetto. Tale porta fu fusa intorno al 1180 da Bonanno Pisano, e unica porta scampata all'incendio del 1595 che semidistrusse la chiesa. La porta di San Ranieri e decorata con 24 formelle raffiguranti storie del Nuovo Testamento. Questa porta e una delle prime prodotte in Italia nel Medioevo, dopo l'importazione di numerosi esempi da Costantinopoli, (ad Amalfi, a Salerno, a Roma, a Montecassino, a Venezia...) e vi si ammira una sensibilita tutta occidentale, che si stacca dalla tradizione bizantina. Sopra le porte ci sono quattro file di gallerie aperte, con, in cima, la Madonna con Bambino e, negli angoli, i quattro evangelisti. La tomba di Buscheto si trova a sinistra della porta nord della facciata.

L'interno e rivestito di marmi bianchi e neri, con colonne monolitiche di marmo grigio e capitelli di ordine corinzio; ha un soffitto a cassettoni dorati seicenteschi, in legno dorato e dipinto, dei fiorentini Domenico e Bartolomeo Atticciati; Non si sa se il soffitto originale fosse simile o a semplici capriate. L'attuale soffitto dorato reca lo stemma dei Medici.

Nel punto di incontro tra i transetti e il corpo centrale si innalza la cupola affrescata con la Vergine in gloria e santi dai pisani Orazio e Girolamo Riminaldi (1627-31).

Le impressionanti colonne granitiche in stile corinzio fra la navata e l'abside provengono dalla moschea di Palermo, bottino della battaglia nella Cala dai Pisani nel 1063.

I wanted this to look interesting when worn since it was not simply a chain on which to hang the ring. I also wanted the ring to be fully visible when held in place. I had considered a locket-type piece with a lid that would hide the ring entirely but ultimately found this more intriguing.

I like figuring out the mechanics of a piece, but it is always an added bonus when the mechanics add to the overall aesthetic.

Overall, I am very, very happy with how this piece turned out.

Bare-knuckle fighter Tom Cribb, The Black Diamond, is a Bristol legend. And like all legends, he has attracted his fair share of myths.

Tom Cribb of Bristol, The Black Diamond, was undefeated Boxing Champion of England, yet there is no memorial to him in the city - not even Cribb’s Causeway! In the eighteenth and early nineteenth century, Bristol was a major centre of prize fighting that curious sport in which men toed a line and hammered each other into bloody oblivion. Someone once called the city ‘the parsley-bed of pugilism’. In that case, Thomas Cribb was the sauce.

Thomas was baptised in the parish of St Philip and St Jacob on July 2, 1781, the fourth of ten children born to Thomas and Hannah (nee Rogers) from St George. His grandfather, Isaac, also lived in St George and was described as a horse-driver. One of Thomas’s younger brothers, George, followed him into the ring, but had a short and unsuccessful career.

In 1794, at the age of 13, Cribb went to London and was initially apprenticed to a bell-hanger. It’s probable that his parents wanted to get him away from one of the roughest areas of Bristol, for six Cribbs were either hanged or transported between 1800 and 1819.

He became a coal porter at Wapping, a job which later gave him his boxing nickname of The Black Diamond. It was there he suffered two serious accidents (crushed between two barges and beneath a 5001b box of oranges) but recovered with no lasting ill effects.

He then enlisted in the Navy before trying his luck as a prizefighter in January 1805. He rapidly defeated George Maddox, amazingly still fighting at the age of 50, and three other contenders, but went down to Bristolian George Nichols - the only defeat in his entire professional career.

In 1807, he was taken on by Captain Robert Barclay, a famous athlete, who offered to train and manage him and made him into the most celebrated pugilist of the day. His first match was against another great Bristol fighter, the one eyed Jem Belcher whose reputation was so high that the odds were six to four against Cribb. In fact Cribb beat him in just 35 minutes.

Cribb went on to beat two more opponents and when British champion John Gulley (another Bristolian) retired in 1808, Cribb was given the title. Belcher was outraged and challenged him to a rematch in 1809 but was again soundly defeated.

No one was prepared to take him on after that except a black American ex-slave called Thomas Molyneux. The fact that Molyneux was both coloured and foreign aroused interest even among people who normally ignored boxing and Cribb was portrayed as fighting for the honour of England and the English.

It was one of the hardest fights in Cribb’s career but he finally beat Molyneux in 1810 and again at a rematch the following year when Molyneux collapsed after 19 minutes. The rematch demonstrated that Cribb had become a superstar in the days when fortunes depended on the verdict.

A crowd of 20,000 travelled the 100 miles from London to see the fight, including most of The Fancy - the upper class boxing fans headed by the Marquis of Queensbury. The day after his victory, Cribb returned to London in a coach pulled by four horses decorated with blue ribbons and received a hero’s welcome. He was later presented with a valuable silver cup.

In 1812 at the age of 31, he announced his retirement and became a coal merchant. In six years, he fought 10 times and was only beaten once. For the next 15 years he sponsored and trained young fighters, including many Bristolians, acted as a second and gave exhibitions at sporting dinners. His coal business failed and he became a publican, but in 1814, after Napoleon had been defeated, he was chosen to demonstrate the skills of the pugilist before the Emperor of Russia, the King of Prussia, three Prussian princes, the Prince of Mecklenburg and Waterloo co-victor Marshall Blucher.

In 1819 he took over the Union Arms in Panton Street, just off the Haymarket, which was later renamed the Tom Cribb in his honour. In January 1822, he was offered the title of ‘Champion for Life’ although he gave it up the following year to his prot'eg'e, Thomas Spring, In 1821, he joined other boxers dressed in heraldic tabards as a guard of honour at the coronation of George IV Some said they were there to protect the unpopular Queen Caroline from the mob.

He might have been a great boxer but he was inept with money and a soft touch for a handout. In 1839, he was declared bankrupt and retired to Woolwich to live with his son. His last public appearance was in December 1822, when he was seen at a benefit fight for William Perry, the Tipton Slasher.

Thomas died on May 11, 1848, aged 67 years, and was buried in the churchyard of St Mary’s and St Andrew’s, Woolwich. The cause of death was said to be a stomach disease and exhaustion.

A subscription fund was opened for a memoriam and, in 1854, a Portland stone lion with its paw resting on the champion’s belt was erected in the church
