Cool books, BPAL reviews

The Extraordinary Adventures of Alfred Kropp. Highly recommended. Alfred Kropp, loner, loser, and reluctant hero, finds redemption after being tricked into stealing Excalibur. Kind of a young adult James Bond meets the Round Table. The Extraordinary Adventures of Ordinary Boy, Book 1: The Hero Revealed. Highly Recommended. Ordinary Boy is the only resident of Superopolis who doesn't have super powers, yet his intelligence demonstrates that knowledge is perhaps the most important super power of all, and heroes aren't necessarily what they seem. Middle school level. Sumokid is currently having Book 2 (The return of meteor boy?) as her bedtime story. BPAL scent for the day is Ostara 2007. Nice floral with a kind of tea rose base, though that's not obvious unless you really look for it. Average throw. ginamariewade, I think you might like this one. We're busy. Husband is currently playing Hungry Hungry Hippos with the daughter. They just stumbled on a Confederate Memorial Day celebration because they happened to be at the park when it happened. There were civil war uniforms and period weapons used in a 21 gun salute, and there was cake. Daughters of the confederacy always have cake. I'm off to transcribe some medical dictation. Not exciting but it pays well.

Reasons to homeschool, number...what are we up to again?

Jackson County High School evacuated when student walks in with bombYes, this would be in Jefferson, about 15 minutes from where I live. Yes, this would be the high school were my brother teaches. Last I heard, he was still at the Civic Center with the evacuated students and they were still sorting things out, working on getting the students home, that kind of thing. I'm thankful that no one was injured.

BPAL: Mouse's Long and Sad Tale (Mad Hatter's Tea Party) - "Vanilla, two ambers, sweet pea and white sandalwood"Wet: sweet, with maybe a hint of flowers in the backgroundOn: vanilla with a hint of flowersDry: Vanilla. Nothing special.Throw: Virtually nonexistent.Overall: I could see this on someone who wanted only a slight hint of scent, or maybe see this added to an unscented lotion, but this is not for me. The other vanilla scents I've tried have been more compelling. Which, boo, this doesn't work, but yeah, I finally have something to start a swap pile with.Aquolina: Pink Sugar (eau de toilette, not oil) - "Base: Vanilla, Candy, Musk, Tonka, Sandalwood; Heart: Licorice Blossom, Lily, Barbe-a-papa, red fruits, strawberry; Head: Bergamots, orange, raspberry, fig leaf"Wet: Mostly smell the alcoholOn: Cooked sugar with a bit of sweetness. Dries very quickly because of the alcohol content.Dry: The cooked sugar smell of pink cotton candyThrow: typical for an eau de toiletteOverall: I love cotton candy, so it's not surprising I like this. It's sweet, but not cloyingly so (like some of BPAL's MonsterBait stuff I've smelled). I wouldn't mind having some of this. This was my first experience with Aquolina; their 'imps' are 1.8 ml samples in a really cute wrapper with a little card giving scent note information. BPAL reviews

I'm not very adept at identifying notes and smells, so bear with me.You'll notice a bit of a theme here, largely violet and vanilla. I don't think I'll ever want to try the whole BPAL catalog, or that I could afford to if I wanted to. So I decided to pick some of my favorite notes and explore those, along with other scents that were highly rated or just sounded yummy.Winter of our Discontent - Yule 2006 - "balsam, myrrh, mandarin orange, bitter clove, artemesia, rosewood, nutmeg, dark musk, smoke and cypress.In the imp: spicy. I really smell the nutmeg.Dry: Spicy cold rosewood, with a green almost vanilla quality. Must be the cypress. Rather compelling. I love it. There's something in it that reminds me of Snow Bunny, though this is not as heavy. Lasts nicely as well. Currently bidding on a bottle on eBay.Nocturne - Funereal Oils - "Deepest violet touched with lilac and tuberose."In the imp: Violet with a touch of sourness.Dry: Violet. Not a bright happy violet, but as the name implies a somber violet. Good throw. Put it on in the morning and could still smell it at bedtime and even faintly the next morning.The Raven - Bewitching Brews - "Sleek, dark, and ominous. Violet and neroli mingled with iris, white sandalwood and dark musk." A gift imp from elfgirlIn the imp: Violet and neroliDry: Violet predominately, with neroli keeping it anchored. To me this smells just like Yves Saint Laurent's Paris, which I love and used to wear quite a bit when it was first released. Sumokid loves it too. Bought a 5ml of this.Tombstone - Wanderlust - "A rugged, warm blend of vanilla, balsam and sassafras layered over Virginia cedar" (freebie from the lab)In the imp: Sharp, acrid cedar.Wet: First time I smelled this wet my impression was that someone spilled vanilla extract on the pile of cedar shavings in a pet store. Second time I smelled this wet, my impression was again vanilla and cedar, but more of the aged wood in my Mom's cedar chest.Dry: Vanilla and cedar, again the aged wood. Soft and lovely. May get more of this one at some point.Catherine - Diabolus - "A sinful blend of orange blossom, rosemary and rose" (another freebie from the lab)In the imp: Citrusy but not in a good way.Dry: Well, on ginamariewade and Sumokid, it smelled kind of like lemongrass. Not a bad scent, but not for me. Will be sending/giving this to ginamariewadeAnd some comments from the meet-n-sniff with softlywhispered, hosted at the home of the lovely pixelmonster, with the ones I liked enough to consider imp-worthy in bold:Dirty - tea rose with soapy lemon undertonesOphelia - Camay soap roseMagdalene - old lady roseCordelia - sweet citrusSeraglio - great in the imp, but on wearing the rose overpowered the almondEden - coconutJolly Roger - rum drenched citrusHecate - Jergen's almond-cherry original lotion scent, imp worthy for me but not bottle worthyLe Serpent qui danse - violet, definitely imp worthy, possibly more as I continue to determine my favorite violet scent, speaking of which...Peony moon - sweet peonies and violet, two of my favorite flowersLe petit mort and Titania - liked them but didn't write down how they smelledAmsterdam - lemon, but not in a good way

You know that point where you look at the rest of the Girl Scout cookies, and decide to just go ahead and eat the rest of them? Went there.Lexapro, Do-Si-Dos, and Diet Pepsi. Breakfast of champions. Husband and I made Sumokid a sock monkey yesterday. It's blue and purple and his name is Fred.

Business slogans

I've added another virtual assistant client. Yeah!It occurs to me that since I want to grow my business I should come up with a business name. So far, no luck on that front. And the only business slogan that has occurred to me thus far is, "We're OCD so you don't have to be." Somehow I think that would only attract clients a lot like me, and I'm not sure if that would be heaven or hell. (No offense meant to those with OCD.)

Snow Day

We didn't get any snow, only ice. Most of it is slushy now. Don't know how it will look in the a.m. No problems with power, etc. Plenty of coffee and other forms of caffeine on hand, so we're goodThis science project is what Sumokid is doing today.Husband likes collecting old books. He just slipped and called one a "first addiction" instead of "first edition." Heh.
