Pedometer Power: 67 Lessons for K-12

This text aims to help PE and health teachers, as well as administrators, to promote health-related fitness among their students. The book provides concrete evidence of pedometer effectiveness as a tool for motivating students. Based on the research of Dr Bob Pangrazi, a physical-education professor, researcher and author, the book presents information and ready-to-go activities to apply this technology. After outlining the importance and history of pedometer use and physical activity, Dr Pangrazi and his co-authors explain how to use pedometers to assess, teach and promote physical-activity principles and involvement. In addition, the book addresses specific challenges found in the school setting, such as minimizing breakage and loss, recording and storing data, fundraising and involving parents and classroom teachers.

Taiwan (Bullet train)

An old friend of my uncle fetched us from Tainan and brought us back to Taichung by car where we visited his factory and family. Taichung can be found in the middle area of Taiwan and was a good 2-3 hours by car to Tainan. On the way back, we rode the bullet train instead and it took us only 45 minutes (if I remember correctly)!

This 2 year old bullet train system travels across all of Taiwan (north to south)! 100 minutes to get from Kaohsiung to Taipei (end to end). This is what we need in the Philippines. The distance would be equivalent to Metro Manila to Ilocos 400+ km in just 100 minutes!

My uncle tells me that there was a time not long ago that we had a railway system, the first or the longest in Asia (I forget which one)! Although it wasn't a bullet train that travels 300km/h, it would still have been a big help to transfer cargo and people. No maintenance and the theft of the equipment including the rail tracks itself have caused the train system to the north to stop operating. The south train still runs but from what I'm told the people living on the tracks do all they can (including throwing trash and human waste at the train and passengers) to stop passengers from riding and thus lessen the trips AND the noise the train causes to their homes. In contrast, even though Taiwan has a new bullet train system, their old system is still running in good condition for passengers and cargo alike!

This is really a sad case. We are regressing year after year, decade after decade. 45 years ago the exchange rate was NT 10 (Taiwan money) to PHP 1 (Philippine peso) and then 20 years ago it became NT 5 to PHP 1. Now (2008) it is the reverse: NT 1 is PHP 1.5! Not only is Taiwan and the other countries advancing, we are regressing at the same time!

A friend sent me a gift card as a lovely surprise. I got some swim training equipment that I've been wanting (BadKitty not included) A training board, paddles, silicone ear plugs (for open water swimming, I use my iPod w/ waterproof case for the pool), pull float and a nice mesh bag for hauling it all around and putting wet things back into after I'm done.
