Rain rain go away, (Tomorrowland, Magic Kingdom) Seeing as though it's been raining non stop for the last week or two in South Florida, I thought this shot would be appropriate to post. I didn't name this set "Walt Rainy World" for nothing, it spent most of our trip there raining. Two of the days were nonstop morning to evening. Two of the days had a few moments of rainlessness. And then the last day was nothing but pure unadulterated sun. Our order at Lowe's was extremely messed up, and so we found out too late that we didn't even have enough tile to finish the floor, let alone the shower. IMG 2008 - Floor sanders Matt and Peter from Jigsaw Floors. We had planned to sand the floor ourselves - I'd done a course and had already hired the drum sander! - but the fiasco with the nailguns and floorboards meant we couldn't get it done. I had to call up these guys to come in and do the sanding for us. It's lucky we did in the end, even though it cost us $1000, because they did a much better job than we would have. The floorboards we bought from S&L were 2-3 mm thicker than the ones from our original floor, and they levelled the whole floor. It took them a whole day and three full garbage bags full of sawdust to get it level. Then the next day, they did with the rotary sander. Floor Sander The floor sander is huge (that's why I didn't tackle this project myself)! 47 Ninth Avenue (Apple Store) Meatpacking District, Gansevoort Market Historic District, Manhattan This was the second (1923) of two modern market buildings constructed on this block by developer John J. Gillen and his partner, architect James S. Maher [see Architects Appendix]. Their other building was 413-435 West 14" Street [see], constructed in 1913-14. Their firm, the owner of this structure, was the West 14" Street Corp. The property had been purchased in 1923 from the estate of William Waldorf Astor, who had died in1919. Like their other building, this one was quite successful in attracting long-term tenants, which included both food-related and non-food-related businesses: George Cook Poultry Corp., and L.I. Duck Growers Assn.1 L.I. Duck Packing, poultry; Woolley & Hughes, Inc., produce; Rothschild-Bernstein, Inc., Edward J. Burbank Co., GothamHotel Supply Co., and M&W Packing, Inc., meat; Charles Wissman Co., provisions; Josephson Mfg. Corp., stationery; World Examining /Sponging Works; and the Coffee Pot and Blue Arrow Luncheonette, restaurants. This Arts and Crafts style building, which is largely intact, contributes to the historicallymixed architectural character and varied uses - including market-related functions - of the Gansevoort Market Historic District. Constructed in 1923 during a major phase of development of the district, when buildings were constructed for produce- and meat-related businesses or other market uses, the building further contributes to the visual cohesion of West 14th Street through its prominent corner location, two brick and concrete facades, steel industrial windows, and the fact that it is one of three buildings on the street designed by architect James S. Maher, who was also a partner in its development. ----About the district---- The Gansevoort Market Historic District - consisting of 104 buildings - is distinctive for its architectural character which reflects the area's long history of continuous, varied use as a place of dwelling, industry, and commerce, particularly as a marketplace, and its urban layout. The buildings, most dating from the 1840s through the 1940s, represent four major phases of development, and include both purpose-built structures, designed in then-fashionable styles, and those later adapted for market use. The architecture of the district tells the story of an important era in New York City's history when it became the financial center of the country and when its markets were expanding to serve the metropolitan region and beyond. Visual cohesion is provided to the streetscapes by the predominance of brick as a facade material; the one- to six-story scale; the presence of buildings designed by the same architects, a number of them prominent, including specialists in market-related structures; the existence of metal canopies originally installed for market purposes; and the Belgian block paving still visible on most streets. The street layout is shaped by the transition between the irregular pattern of northwestern Greenwich Village (as far north as Gansevoort Street) and the grid of the 1811 Commissioner's Plan. Unusually large and open intersections contribute to the area's unique quality, particularly where Ninth Avenue meets West 14'~S treet and Gansevoort Street (which was widened in l887), and provide sweeping vistas that showcase the unusual building typology and mixed-use quality of the district. Aside from Tribeca, the Gansevoort Market Historic District is the only remaining marketplace district that served the once-flourishing Hudson River commercial waterfront. The earliest buildings in the historic district date from the period between 1840 and 1854, most built as rowhouses and town houses, several of which soon became very early working-class tenements (all eventually had stores on the ground floor). The area's early mixed use, however, is evident in the rare surviving early factory building (c. 1849-60), on a flatiron-shaped lot, for Col. Silas C. Herring, a nationally significant manufacturer of safes and locks, at 669-685 Hudson Street. This mixed use, consisting of single-family houses, multiple dwellings, and industry was unusual for the period. The stretch of Ninth Avenue between Gansevoort and West 15' Streets, albeit altered and interrupted with later additions, offers the vista of a distinctive Manhattan streetscape featuring twenty buildings of the 1840s: the rowhouses at Nos. 3-7 (c. 1849) and Nos. 21-27 (c. 1844-46), the Herring factory, and culminating in the rare, picturesque ensemble of twelve rowhouses and town houses, Nos. 44-60 Ninth Avenue and 351-355 West 14th Street (c. 1841-46), at the wide, angled intersection with Hudson and West 14" Streets. Another business from this period was the woodworking factory of the prominent building firm of James C. Hoe & Co. (c. 1850-54) at 52-58 Gansevoort Street (later altered). After the Civil War, the area began to flourish commercially as New York City solidi 025.365 Day 25 Tagged I got tagged a while back on flikr but I've been too lazy till now to do anything about it. damaged-2nd-stage-2 The Cluster Cone is dependable enough that I used it at an exhibition for kids at the local museum where space was at a premium. The flight was a great success; all motors and all three stages lit off. The two boosters landed in the small courtyard but the sustainer drifted across the San Antonio River, never to be seen again. For a year now, I have been meaning to replace the sustainer. I finally gathered the boosters, tossed them into the back seat and brought them home, making several stops along the way. There they sat for a while. My wife borrowed the car and moved the seat all the way up. I moved it back where it belongs and headed to the lab to work on the Cluster Cone, among other things. When I got there, I found to my horror that it had fallen to the floorboard and that I had ruined the 2nd stage when moving the seat back. Rotted joists When we bought the farm the barn had a hole in the roof. The hole had been there for a while and as a result the floor under the hole on the second floor had rotted out. We repaired the roof, but after a few years we found that the joists and floorboards on the first floor were also rotted. We just stayed away from that corner, but since we had to do some repairs to the other end of the barn we decided to repair the rotted beams. The floor in this corner was full of junk, so we had to clean it out. We got a 15 yard dumpster for the plastic from the field and filled it about 1/3 with the plastic. We then cleaned out the basement of the barn and the debris in the corner and pulled out most of the rotted wood. That filled the rest of the dumpster. This is the hole that remained, before we started to replace things. KINGS FLOORING CENTRE - FLOORING CENTRE
Kings Flooring Centre - Underfloor Heating For Tiles. Kings Flooring Centre
Washington's Center in The Capital The crypt serves as the main thoroughfare of the ground floor of the Capitol and is a stop for all Capitol Tours provided through the Capitol Visitor Center. The large circular area on the first floor of the Capitol is called the Crypt. The 40 Doric columns of brown stone surmounted by groined sandstone arches support the floor of the Rotunda. This center section of the building was completed in 1827 under the direction of the third Architect of the Capitol, Charles Bulfinch. The star in the center of the floor denotes the point from which the streets in Washington are laid out and numbered. A marble compass was set into the floor of the chamber to mark the point where the four quadrants of the District of Columbia meet. Washington, D.C. is administratively divided into four geographical quadrants of unequal size, each delineated by their ordinal directions from the medallion located in the Crypt under the Rotunda of the Capitol. Street and number addressing, centered on the Capitol, radiates out into each of the quadrants, producing a number of intersections of identically named cross-streets in each quadrant. Originally, though the District of Columbia was a near-perfect square, even then the Capitol was never located at the geographic center of the territory. As a result, the quadrants are of greatly varying size. Indeed Northwest is quite large, encompassing over a third of the city's geography, while Southwest is little more than a neighborhood and military base. Additionally, all addresses in Washington, D.C. are designated NE, NW, SE, or SW, in relation to the Rotunda. Since the Capitol Rotunda is not located in the center of the District—it is slightly farther east and south—the four D.C. quadrants are not the same shape and size. Theory : An imaginary vertical line descending from the Sun gate in the dome travels through a golden dot at the center of the Rotunda, then through a star in a large circular room called the Crypt one story beneath the Rotunda. The Latin crypta means “hidden” or “secret.” A crypt is usually found in cemeteries and under public religious buildings, such as churches and cathedrals. It’s a burial place, but also, importantly, a meeting place. The star in the crypt marks the literal ground zero in Washington. It divides the city into four quadrants, and every address in the city tells you where you are in relation to that precise point in the U.S. Capitol building. This is just another open (yet hidden) hint as to the significance of that particular gold dot. Architectural historians link the crypt with the unconscious and the chtonic, subterranean or earthly realm. This is based on the medieval belief that the cathedral was the body of Christ and a symbol also of Man. The body and spirit, encased in a coffin or casket, is ‘planted’ in the crypt to resurrect or rise. A crypt is also an entrance to a tomb. Indeed, the Capitol’s Crypt provides an entrance to Washington’s Tomb, which is located one story beneath the Crypt. Washington’s Tomb is empty. Why? The tomb was never used to inter Washington’s body. The plans to place his casket there were scuttled by a legal issue in Washington’s will. His grave is at Mount Vernon, the President’s home. A more compelling answer is because Washington is on the ceiling of the dome… in the heavens above. The story of these three Capitol stories is that Washington has risen. Just like Jesus’s tomb (and the King’s Chamber of the Great Pyramid) Washington’s is empty because the man is now a deity. This perspective conjures the image of the Capitol as a temple of transformation or even a casket. King's Lynn, Clifton House House.
