Speeding Car

This shot was taken for a Pentax advertorial in the UKs Digital Photo Pro magazine. Shooting this kind of image is so simple, there's absolutely no computer trickery involved either. You just have to mount the camera onto the car to make sure the camera and the car are moving at the same speed.

Image from Centenary Lakes, Cairns & A Message for All the Canon "S" Series Owners

Image from Centenary Lakes, Cairns & A Message for All the Canon

I am posting this photo as an excuse to mention something to my friends with a Canon S2-IS to S5-IS. Canon has been issuing a new "S" series each year and for 2008 nothing has yet come out. I was wondering if an S6 would come and I found this after some searching. I have been discussing cameras with some of my "S" friends. Just thought this article might be interesting (nothing confirmed yet).

The photo is from the Centenary Lakes at the Botanical Gardens in Cairns. It can be a pretty area. I reduced the quality of this photo because it seemed a bit big in memory so I hope it is ok and I may change if I think it is poor.

S6-IS to be out soon NEW MrClick - 2 weeks ago

A few days ago I had begun to increasingly feel that Canon is going to discontinue the SxIS and F5xx lines after having discussions with some local store managers.
Today I met someone who is commercially directly associated with Canon (he works for the importing company who is authorized to import cameras directly from Canon.) He confirmed that the A5xx line has indeed been killed. But he said the SxIS line is very much alive. Ye! In fact the S6IS is going to be officially announced very soon. I couldn't get a specific time-frame but since he is not able to procure S5IS stocks directly from Canon anymore, his experience says the S6IS will be announced this month itself... i.e. July 2008.
He also feels that Canon will be announcing many new lines of P&S camera in the near future because they aren't able to commit stocks in larger numbers to importers like him at present. In his experience this is indicative of several new lines currently under production to replace the current range.
This is what he has quoted from memory (so some info could be slightly off the mark)
===========================

S6-IS Specs

Sensor Size: 1/2.3"
Sensor Type: CCD (he is sure of this)
Sensor Resolution: 10 megapixels
Wide Angle: Yes (he remembers it being either 28mm or 27mm)
Optical Zoom: 18x
Digital Zoom: 5x
Max Aperture: F2.8 (Wide)
Face Detection: Yes
Motion Detection: Yes (this seems to be something new)
Flash Shoe: Yes
LCD Swivel: Yes
LCD: 2.5"
Battery: AAx4
Video Resolution: 1024 x 768 (he is not sure of this)
Audio: Stereo

Would these specs be a good enough reason to upgrade from the S3-IS/S5-IS? For me, I think it would. The wide/tele focal range will really appeal to me if the optics is as decent as that of my S5IS.
And if it indeed has 1024 x 768 video resolution with a decent frame rate, the upgrade becomes irresistible for me at least!
So now here I am again in a quarry whether to sell my mint condition S5-IS right now or to wait for the announcement of the S6-IS. So frustrating!!!

================================================

That ends the paste which is the quote I am repeating from the Internet.

I've been thinking about doing this project for months now, and today I finally finished it. I made the entire 24" x 36" composition from scratch in Photoshop, re-creating all the fonts and drawing all the icons. I saved it as a pdf and had it digitally printed on photo paper. There are outlines for the pictures and hash marks in the corners that I cut with an x-acto knife, so I can slide in my own 4x6 prints. I left space to write in titles and descriptions, I had planned on using a whiteboard or dry erase pen but I haven't found one yet that will actually erase on the photo paper. The picture is a little blurry but everything printed out crystal clear.

** FILE ** Singer Rihanna is shown in this Oct. 9, 2007, file photo in New York. Rihanna continues to shoot down rumors she hooked up with Jay-Z, who's her boss and Beyonce's boyfriend. "This is what really happened," the 19-year-old singer tells Allure magazine's January issue, on stands Dec. 24, 2007. "He and my management, they have each other's contact information. I went to (the New York club) Pink Elephant, and he came by. All of a sudden, the next day, I'm seeing that we were kissing and hugging up each other." My second stranger today. I'm loving all the pink and red hair that's about at the moment. Rihanna and I were on the same train home, it turns out we live in the same town. Not a bad coincidence given my blog posts today.

Rihanna is a stylist in London and has to wear a lot of black for work. When she's not working she prefers a lot more colour. Hopefully she'll be the first of a local group of people that get together when the weathers good for "Drop of the hat" photo shoots.

To prove a point...

To prove a point...

As far as state of mind goes right now:
Larry, I can still act like a child, dammit. I can still make stupid headbands out of tulle, put on some old jewelry and a little bit of lipgloss and feel pretty as hell... I've still got a little girl somewhere inside of me. I still dress for the occasion anytime I feel pretty, even if I'm the only one who'll see me.

I still MUST call you to understand the male sex. They are impossible to me.
I still climb on tractors and make an absolute fool of myself for the hell of it. I still won't wear shoes unless I absolutely have to. I will still swim in any reservoir you take me to. I still make snow angels any time I see snow. I still fall flat on my face when I try to snowboard, and I still have fun doing it. I still ride bikes at Wal-Mart. I will still jump off the park bridge with you. I will still beat you at basketball.
I still have moments where I am intensely happy, peaceful, and chaotic at the same time, and it still is just as funny. I still find my heart in peril and it paralyzes the rest of my world at times. A thought about something that is wrong in my life, on a day that everything is perfect, will still mess up the majority of my day. I'm still a tomboy, I'm still a girly girl, and everything in between. And it still works.

I still think that despite the fact that I'm a "grownup" that doesn't mean I have to lose any part of myself, just adjust some things to fit accordingly. It doesn't mean I live in a fantasy land, it just means that I care enough about who I am not to lose her in the process of growing. GROW does not necessarily mean CHANGE every time.

SO, I had fun tonight. Goofy mood. I thought I'd go ahead and take a self portrait to record it.

This shot, in particular.... was all noise. I was able to clean it up a bit, but, lesson learned... took me 3 hours to edit this and usually I'm a "color correct and go" editor.

I made the headband out of 3 strips of tulle left over from Zoey's birthday party. It was a fun way to spend 5 minutes... And as weird as it looks, I honestly like it a lot.
My hair looks awesome.
I like the tone of my skin.
The necklace hugs my neck just right.
I usually don't wear a lot of pink. It doesn't really interact with my skin in an attractive way, and it makes me look huge- I try to steer clear of pinks and reds when possible... but aside from the color the shirt looked great on me tonight, so I don't mind the color.

Beyond all this, I love the fact that tonight I feel confident enough to upload a photo of myself, in my worst(read: adds the most weight) clothing color, wearing a pom-pom thing on my head. Grown up or not, I could care less. Just me is just fine and I don't do myself or anyone else any favors by hiding it.

2011 365 5

2011 365 5

Day 5
January 5, 2011

I know what you're thinking - This isn't a good photo. If a project 365 is supposed to improve my photography, why am I taking crappy cell phone photos? Because photography is more than pictures. I took this photo because I wanted to share something important with you.

All of the images in my portfolio (shotbyjohn.com) come from ideas. Ansel Adams professed visualization. Great photographs are born in the mind's eye. After my minds eye (much weaker than Ansel's) sees something, I write it down in this Moleskine notebook. Some of these notes become my most cherished photographs. Writing down your ideas is incredibly important.

I won't get into a debate over whether or not a good 'ol notebook is better than Dropbox or Evernote, but I enjoy pre-digital things. There's something that feels good about seeing your own ideas in your own handwriting.

In my life, this notebook is probably the closest thing I have to a child. :)

Taken with my Droid.

Meet Mr. Fifru - January 2010

Meet Mr. Fifru - January 2010

At last... Mr. Fifru debut... Biscuit buddies came up with this concept... meet up once a month for a Mr. Fifru shoot... share raw photos through dropbox... and edit each others work... how is that for SHARING and Co-operative working! :)

This is a learning opportunity. We have predefined a target for this project... improve our strobe techniques... with the help of melmif and his equipment... we will definitely learn and improve as we proceed!!

ABOUT Mr. FIFRU

So... we met this guy during Christmas Breakfast... I was enjoying my scrambled eggs when all of a sudden.. he sat at our table, introduced himself as Mr. Fifru and simply ate with us... he has become our good friend and agreed to meet us every month as long as he gets his tea with him. He would like us (biscuits) to take him round our island and discover it... rigorously by night!! My fellow biscuits will add on to the story.. so watch out for their contributions!!

Collage

Collage

Project Name: Collage

For my background, I copied a picture of a background and pasted it to my workspace. I found a soccer ball picture and a picture of a cross and pasted them onto my background. I used the quick selection tool to take off the parts of the images that I didn't want. I also found an image of Biggby Coffee and added it to my background. I doubled clicked on the Beaner's layer and the cross layer to get into the layer style blending options and added a drop shadow to both. I also found a photostrip online and pasted it onto the background. I added a drop shadow also. I added four pictures to put into the photostrip. I used the polygonal lasso tool to crop the solo challenge picture. I added three more photos to put into the photostrip. I resized all four pictures using free transform and rotated them with free transform to fit into the photostrip. I added a filter to all four of those photos also. I selected the artistic filter and applied grain to them. I then added the picture Avenue and added a drop shadow to it. Then I duplicated Avenue so I could change the blending mode to overlay. I also found a Twilight book cover and added it to my background. I used the eyedrop tool to select a red from the apple. Then I selected the picture and put the number of pixels for the border at five. I then added the color and feathered the border. I added two other pictures and used the same technique to add a border to each of them. I found a picture of some music notes and a different picture of push pins. I used the quick selection tool to get rid of the white around them. I used the move tool to postion them over pictures and images. I used free transform to rotate the music notes. I then found an image of note paper and added a drop shadow to it. I used the type tool to add a verse over the top. I changed the color of it and added another type tool for the reference. I added another type tool for my name and used the free transform to rotate it and the move tool to position it on my photostrip.

Overall I was pretty happy with my collage. I was worried at first because I didn't really understand what to do. But once I got the general of what I wanted my collage to look like and how to use photoshop it started to come together. I really like the pictures I chose and I think that it looks pretty good.

The Perfect Storm

The Perfect Storm

For this image I started with a single photo of a flash of lightning over water. Then I applied a layer effect of overlay with a 100% opacity. Next I added a different photo of water that was rougher. I used the free transform tool to position, size, and warp it to the space given and make it look realistic. I also cropped the original photo. I placed the water layer below the lighting photo so that it blended more and shone through. Next I added the clouds. I found a picture of clouds on the internet and imported it. Then I applied a gradient layer to it so that only part of it showed and it sort of blended into the picture. Next I added the shark fin. I got it free floating by using the magnetic lasso then I changed the layer blending mode to darken and opacity to 100. Lastly I made it look like it was raining or had a haze. I did this by following a tutorial online. During it I used the cloud render filter and the Gaussian blur filter.

Lindsay Chambers submitted panel for Odyssey Charter School First Grade (Mrs. Chambers and Mrs. Grant's First Grade Class!)

Lindsay Chambers submitted panel for Odyssey Charter School First Grade (Mrs. Chambers and Mrs. Grant's First Grade Class!)

Dream Theme - Community

Title of artwork - "Changing the World... One Kid at a Time."

Story behind your panel...

"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." - Dr. Suess

"Teaching has always been a passion of mine. The reason I chose the education field is to help students understand their own abilities and to guide them to reach their highest potential. Over the past few years, I have become very passionate about helping kids understand how their choices no (yes, even as young as 6 years old) affect them as adults.

Statistics show that students leaving first grade reading below grade level have a 1/8 chance of ever catching up to where they need to be. This statistic was an eye opener. I decided that I wanted our class to feel empowered by education and their freedom to change the world by being whatever they choose to be.

We began to learn about inspirational people in American's History (Helen Keller, Thomas Edison, Neil Armstrong, Albert Einstein, Thomas Jefferson, Amelia Earhart, etc) and the steps these people took to achieve their own dreams.

Students were given an opportunity to use books to research different careers and choose their oun future.

We had career day where they dressed up as their future career and made a goal frame to keep in their room with their own personal goals for achieving their dreams.

The students created the quote together for our dream theme panel. Creating the dream theme panel was such a fun journey to take with our students!

Mrs. Grant and I are amazed and inspired by their enthusiasm to make the world a better place!"

Fun: Not Just for Kids Any More

Fun: Not Just for Kids Any More

When I was growing up, fall and spring were always my favourite seasons. Fall meant the end of burning restrictions... and evenings up in my forts in the woods... gathering twigs by the light of a torch that consisted of a stick with a big burning chunk of birch bark speared on its point. Spring meant the revival of... well... springs. We had them... little burblings up of water from below the ground... here, there and everywhere... all over the farm.

Fire and water both fascinate me endlessly. These days I mostly appreciate them indoors... in their tame, domesticated forms. But Echo just can't get enough of water and puddles and splashing in the mud. So today I decided to join her... playing in this puddle she's created in the back yard... with lots of sticky smelly mud. I ended up with two rubber boots full of gritty slop... and wet stockings... and a big big smile. Hope you get at least a little bit of the fun out of this vicariously.

20071206113153-bryan

This rock had a funny shape to it which made the double track.

This photo appeared in the following ideotrope albums:

Biking the Mojave Fall 2007 - Introduction
I biked through Death Valley in October 1996. It was 109°F at Furnace Creek. The area is beautiful, but it was way too hot at that time of year. I knew I wanted to come back on my bicycle when it was cooler. This year it worked out to take about 3 weeks after Thanksgiving. I ended up spending 18 days to cycle from Palm Springs to Las Vegas. I spent about half of that time in Death Valley NP. In Baker I met a group of cyclists on racing bikes with a support vehicle. They were cycling from Palm Springs to Las Vegas in 2 days. I saw a lot more desert than they did.
Coachella Valley and Joshua Tree National Park
I crossed the Coachella Valley on Ramon Rd. It was over 70°F, probably the warmest day of the trip. It wasn't 'til I turned onto Thousand Palms Rd. that I felt like I was heading out into the desert on my own. The San Andreas Fault system runs along the northern end of the Coachella Valley. The faults allow groundwater to rise to the surface resulting in a number of California fan palm oases. It's wonderful to see oases in the desert.
It was a 1300m climb on Berdoo Canyon Rd. to the Coachella Valley-Pleasant Valley saddle in Joshua Tree NP. I didn't see a single person or vehicle in Berdoo Canyon. Climbing out of Pleasant Valley I saw the first person, a fellow adventurer. Patrick was walking solo across Joshua Tree NP from west to east. That's a heck of a trek. That park is huge and has only one known spring. Patrick had set up two water caches before his trip.
Amboy Road and Mojave National Preserve
I bought enough food in 29 Palms to last 4 days to Baker. Heading east on the Amboy Rd. I met the only other touring cyclist of the trip. He had come down from Bishop through Death Valley NP, Baker, Kelso, Amboy - much the same route I was planning to take. When I met him, he had run out of food. I shared some almonds with him but didn't have much sympathy with his plight. The reason he didn't buy food in Baker was because there wasn't a health food store! Well, I told him there was a grocery store in 29 Palms, but it might not be up to his standard.
One of the things I was looking forward to on this trip was experiencing the transition zone between the Sonoran Desert (lower, farther south) and the Mojave Desert (higher, farther north). Creosote bushes grow in both, but most other flora is limited to one ecosystem or the other. In the transition zones you can see a mix of vegetation. What I saw ended up being less dramatic than Washington County, Utah where the Colorado Plateau, the Basin and Range country, and the Mojave Desert all come together. Joshua Trees were the main ecosystem indicator for me. I knew I was climbing high when I started to see them.
I was surprised how much traffic there was on the Amboy Rd. It wasn't much, but a lot of the paved roads that I was on during the trip would have one car every 10-30 minutes and perhaps none all night. The only truly busy roads were the road north out of Baker (on a Saturday morning) and the Pahrump-Las Vegas superhighway which has a wonderful bicycle lane.
I climbed Sheep Hole Pass to get into the Amboy Valley. It was in the Amboy Valley where I became accustomed two aspects important to cyclists in the Mojave:
Distances are deceiving. You can see really far. It takes much longer to cross these valleys that it appears that it would.
The slight inclines up alluvial fans or other fill climb a lot more than they appear to. In Colorado I'm not accustomed to seeing the whole climb since there are usually canyon climbs here. Leaving Amboy, for example, I climbed over 3000 ft. on a slowly rising alluvial plane. It took hours.
I enjoyed time off the bike to walk out to and up Amboy Crater. The following day I climbed to the top of the Kelso Dunes. And one day later I climbed one of the cinder cones east of Baker. I enjoyed having a diversion each day. Each of those areas is beautiful in its own way. The creosote bushes in the Amboy Valley are particularly green because of the shallow water table. Kelso Dunes are simply fantastic, and the cinder cone area with over 30 cinder cones and not another person felt like another planet.
In Baker I bought enough food to last 10 days and ate at the Mad Greek at my brother's recommendation. I had taken a rest day the previous day because of rain, and Baker was a bit flooded. Folks were out pushing water around with brooms. At the store the locals were telling each other how much their roofs leaked.
Death Valley National Park
Heading north of Baker the saddle that separates the Silurian Valley from Death Valley is only about a 50' climb. From there I left the pavement and stopped at Saratoga Springs to see the incredible wetlands in the desert. I had planned o

Penelope & My Mini Albums - 337/365 ADAD & 23/52 WB

This month's them for 52 Weeks of Blythe is "Non-dolly collections." I don't really collect anything else but I do have tons of mini scrapbooking albums that I've made.

Which one is YOUR fave???

Here they are:
1. My son’s 10 year old State Baseball trip

2. My son’s Soccer Album

3. LOVE this album- I made 3 little mini albums that go inside this Tupperware dish. Concept is that you need “family,” “work,” & “play” to have a balanced life (like a well balanced meal, hence the dish)

4. Funny album about how my family tries hard to ruin the photos I take of them. Get it??? Un-GRATE-ful…… using a cheese GRATER. LOL

5. Inside this decorated shampoo bottle is a mini album about all the hairstyles I’ve had in my life

6. Just about my boys’ grandfather

7. The neighborhood kids jumping on a mini trampoline – Each page has a photo of one kid doing a fun “trick” & I named each one by how the jump looked. Funny!

8. Mini album about what I will miss about not having a daughter in my life (was an entry into a scrapbooking contest)

9. LOVE LOVE LOVE this album. Used a vegetable steamer & inside are individual pages about my “steaming hot” hubby

10. Altoid tin - 2005 Christmas

11. Clearbox mini album of pix of my kids walking on a railroad track

12. LOVE LOVE LOVE this one too!!! This one is about our little girl neighbor & her adorable outfits she always wears. I took 10 pictures of her in 10 different outfits. Then cut the pictures at her waist. Then you can turn the top part & bottom parts at different times to create mix & match outfits. Remember those old books where you can make a bear have a bear head, alligator body & cat feet.

13. Sweet cut out album of my boys being BROTHERS

14. Little mini album of my son playing with his first hand held video game. The album sits inside a decorate camera bag

15. I took a road trip with a bunch of girls who along with me were scrapbook page designers for the company Junkitz. GREAT trip!

16. Cardboard album of the “next generation” of my family. Need to add the two newest kids though.

17. Matchbook style album – Wrote a little story about how aliens took over our neighborhood. Inside are pictures of all the kids that I photoshopped to look like aliens with big heads. I let the kids name themselves with alien names too. Another funny one!

Memories Are Made of This #2

Memories Are Made of This #2

circa 1990. memories: cigarette lighter behind 78RPM record album is from Mary - a true love; 78 RPM records are from my mother's collection - mostly opera as I recall; mother's Remington Typewriter, photo album depicting father, old photo from mother's high school athletic team, father's 1940's military pic, picture on left in album is sister's birthday party with father holding me, mother on right, sister at table front and friends, mom's mom to my father's left; coins from Greece from my 1988 trip; National Geographic Magazine collection; 1890's Encyclopedia Brittanica volumes found in my teenage years home back in the1960s in Totowa; magnifier I used to look at negs and slides; my tobacco pipes; tapestry bought several years before and brings back memories of 4 footed friends in years gone by; ; my writing desk; and a Valentine's Day card between my parents from the 1940's. The piece of film that recorded all this is also a memory of the highpoint in my photography avocation - 8x10 inch camera studio photography with professional level flash equipment and other photo tools. Made on Kodak Ektachrome 8x10 inch field camera with studio flash in Chimera light boxes exposure unrecorded although I am sure I used a digital flash spot meter to set aperture and shutter speed on the large format lens and also adjusted for long bellows extension for this slight closeup shot. . Cropped section of color reversal film scanned at 3200dpi (7.4 x 9.6 inch) Epson v750. Photoshop used to sharpen, adjust hue and trim digital image before downsizing for web.

I know these pictures are very late, this was an Autumn Craft Class Project!

I made two of these for Christmas presents, one for each of my parents. They are filled with photos from a shoot my sister and I did specifically for giving to our parents, as they have been asking for updated portraits of us for quite a while. The albums each had ten 4x6 photos, and then they each chose one that we got printed 8x10 for them.

Photographs by Brendan Barlow of Brief Candle Photography, styling by myself!

335: Dance with me for I'll be leaving soon

335: Dance with me for I'll be leaving soon

Saturday, June 18, 2011 Song of the day: Circa Survive "Mandala"

I used to fall asleep to Circa Survive's "On Letting Go" album every single night while falling asleep about three years ago. I always feel so peaceful when I listen to it, but I also get sleepy.

So, here's a photo of my brand-spankin' new retainer. Yes. I am 25 years old and still wear a retainer almost every night. I sleep better with it! My previous one was zebra print but after having it for 9 years I decided it was about time to upgrade.

I think I hit my social limit today. I need some alone time, pronto. So that's what I'll be doing this lovely Saturday eve; hanging out, watching some crappy television, and being all by myself. Being around people constantly is very exhausting for me and requires a lot of energy. It doesn't help that the weather here in MN has sucked major butt so I'm certain I'm becoming vitamin D deficient (whatever that really means...).

I bought tickets today to see Jack's Mannequin in Duluth next weekend. I'm so excited! I think this will be my fourth time seeing them. One of my all time favorite songs to see performed live is "Bruised" by JM- it is so spectacular. I can't wait to go to Duluth too- I miss that place so much!

I really need to start getting more creative for the final 30 days of this project........
