Day 100 - Trading in my shoes I realized after only a few days of work that these fancy shoes aren't practical. They're too high and not very comfortable. I traded them in for a pair of comfortable ballet-style Mary Janes. I'd rather be myself, than play a role. They're classy and professional, but they just don't fit me. There are a lot of stereo-types about working in a lawfirm and the dress code is not as strict as I imagined. Lawyers are a lot more laid back than I thought. I dropped the high-heels into my closet and closed the door. Day 100 of 365 days The Ord Oracle - 04/13/2009... Merrill Lynch Calling for Help! Following the spectacular collapse of AIG and Lehman Brothers in September 2008, Merrill Lynch & Co. knew that its days as an independent investment bank were numbered. It sought help from other banks and agreed to a buyout from the Bank of America for USD $50-billion. I thought the police cruiser in the back fit the title that "Merrill Lynch Calling For Help" quite well. In reality, the police car was blocking off traffic for the Toronto International Marathon held on 2008-09-28. mysterious man in the background The boss of the Dutch National Bank was giving a speech on the credit crisis and he had his picture in the papers. COMMUNITY INVESTMENT MANAGER : INVESTMENT GRADE BONDS 2011 : PRIVATE FIXED INVESTMENT. Community Investment Manager
Komunitas Salihara KOMUNITAS SALIHARA stands on a land of around 3,060 square meters on Jalan Salihara 16, Pasar Minggu, South Jakarta. It consists of Teater Salihara, Galeri Salihara, Cafe, Artstore, Lounge, office building and guesthouse. TEATER SALIHARA can accommodate up to 252 people. This is the first black box theater building in Indonesia. Built with sound-proof walls, the theater is complete with dressing rooms and all the modern stage, sound, and lighting equipments. The rooftop of Teater Salihara building is also designed to serve as an open-air theater. GALERI SALIHARA, unlike other gallery structures in general, takes the form of a cylinder whose circumference is shaped rather like an oval. An empty space with circular walls, without angles, without borders, will provide a wider perspective for the viewers. A cozy food court with an open view is situated below the gallery, offering miscellaneous food and drink. No less unique is the four-storied building housing offices, library, guesthouse, and bookstore. The uppermost floor partly protrudes and hovers over the rooftop of the theater building, while the lowermost floor partly vanishes into the ground. In terms of its architecture, the complex of Komunitas Salihara can be viewed as an interesting architectural experiment. It is the work of three architects, each having his own tendency—the theater building is designed by Adi Purnomo, the gallery by Marco Kusumawijaya, and the office building by Isandra Mati-n Ahmad. The three of them then sat together to integrate their designs within the same vision: to build a new home for art and ideas, one that is environmentally friendly and spends less energy. Komunitas Salihara will grow along with a smarter, more open, and more democratic public. Its managers believe that mastery in art serves as a precious investment for the growth of the nation’s children from this day on. The public plays a very important part in fostering such mastery. RETURN OF DRAGONS’ DEN FOR BEECH TENANTS Tenants of Beech Housing Association are all set for a rerun of the hit TV show Dragon’s Den with the news that Beech has ?20,000 to give away to deserving community projects from its Neighbourhood Fund. The cash is being made available by Beech as a result of savings made across the business. Bids made by organisations, charities and other Beech residents will be assessed in the same way as in the TV show, where business gurus Duncan Bannatyne and Theo Paphides sit in judgement of new ideas and decide whether to invest. Beech Regional Manager Mike Murphy said: “At a time when many organisations are having to make cuts, we’re really pleased to be able to announce that Beech is making ?20,000 available to organisations to fund new projects.” Mike Murphy said: “Obviously, anyone pitching an idea in the Dragon’s Den will have to be ready to hear the words ‘I’m out’ if they fail to impress the panel, but this is a great way to involve people in making community investment decisions.” Overseeing the Neighbourhood Fund process for Beech is Chris Richardson. Chris said: “The deadline for bids for the money is Friday 17th June but if anyone has an idea for a project and they want to discuss it with me beforehand then they are more than welcome to call me.” Potential bidders will need to complete an application form and this can be downloaded from the Beech web site or requested by telephoning Chris on 01257 244800. How much money do i need to invest in stocks : Definition of capital investment. How Much Money Do I Need To Invest In Stocks
Need to take some time off I've become a flickr addict lately and it turns out to be sort of a problem for me. Not a very lucky moment for addictions (well, lately I've been addicted to jogging as well). In the forthcoming month I'm taking 4 exams, not to mention the fact that I have to start working on my thesis eventually. I need to have all sorted out by June 21, the day when I plan to set out on a journey to Montenegro. Will I manage? For these reasons I have to disappear for a while, but I'll be back soon with a bunch of new photos, especially after coming back from the Balkans. I've made a promise to myself that I'm not going to log to flickr, not even once until at least June 3 (I'm taking my 1st exam then). I'm not really used to making such sacrifices, so keep your fingers crossed for my strong will and my exams. And forgive me lack of response and comments on your wonderful photos. I'll make up for my absence, I promise :) Photo taken by Dominik while we were touring Hungary. Somewhere near Lake Balaton. I have to admit I love it! So this is my second to last picture in my year-long project. I'm feeling pretty sure I won't do it again next year. Sometimes I feel the need to just be invisible for awhile. I know for certain I couldn't do a YIP self portraits. All I'd end up doing is taking endless photos of my fingers and an occasional elbow. Newport High School, South Wales. Demolished This building first appeared on my Flickr site on 19 April 2008, when a last minute campaign to save it was being fought. Last I heard, the bulldozers were at work. The following abstract is from the original upload, which is in the Evans & Shalev set. Competition winning scheme by Evans & Shalev. 1972. By the time you see these photos the demolition of this building would have probably started. This is the latest example of the barbaric behaviour of British politicians, who are completely blind to the merits of good design. Initially, adequate maintenance of projects is ignored and upkeep is under-funded. There is often a good case for claiming higher funding to resolve the ‘teething’ problems of some of these outstanding buildings, often designed by young practices with potential problems not weeded out at the construction stage. We are getting particularly good at letting the ‘brutal’ looking buildings deteriorate and then claim that these are now beyond repairs and not fit for purpose. Pimlico School has gone, Cambridge Library by Stirling just survived and now future of Leicester Engineering Building is in doubt. Some big names in architectural world recently wrote letters asking for the reprieve of the building but to no avail. The Welsh Heritage Minister refused the school its listing application at the end of March. Welsh threw away Zaha Hadid’s prize winner Opera Building through lack of guts and seem to suffer from some phobia of good standards of design. Richard Rogers wrote in his appeal to save the school; “The school is an outstanding example of British modern architecture. It is based upon a clear hierarchy of ordered spaces from small to large, resulting in a building that is unique in its architectural beauty and intellectual rigour. Walking through the building, one is astonished by the special harmony and poetic scale.” Gordon Benson (Benson & Forsyth) in a similar letter wrote; “The project …. is flexible, adaptable and capable of accommodating a contemporary education/ transformational brief, given the opportunity and appropriate levels of investment.” Higher Education Rally A rally of higher education students at the Colorado Capitol in Denver. Commercial Bank at Brookfield Place There is a plaque on this building that reads: “Built in 1845 by the Commercial Bank of the Midland District and designed by architect William Thomas, this building originally served as the bank’s Toronto branch office. The Commercial Bank was located in Kingston, Ontario, which at that time aspired to become Canada’s political and financial centre. Toronto eventually eclipsed Kingston as a financial centre, but the Bank did not survive long enough to profit from the rising fortunes of Toronto. The Commercial Bank Building was eventually occupied by the Merchant’s Bank of Canada in 1868, which in turn was taken over by the Bank of Montreal. During WWI, the firm Clarkson, Gordon and Dilworth located its offices in the building and remained until 1969. The facade of the building, as you see it today, was disassembled stone by stone, restored and reconstructed to appear just as it did when in opened in 1845. Its original location at 13-15 Wellington Street was immediately north of where the building sits today.” Commercial Banking Company of Sydney Limited + Bank of New South Wales (both built in the 1920's) George Street facing Martin Place Commercial Banking Company of Sydney Limited is part of National Australia bank NAB and has moved out. A Champion of 'Yes We Can' When President Barack Obama presented the Medal of Freedom to 16 distinguished American and international “agents of change” in August, one of the honorees linked Mr. Obama to both his past and to the future he is so committed to creating. Among the 16 leaders who received America’s highest civilian honor was Professor Muhammad Yunus, the founder of the Grameen Bank in Bangladesh, which makes tiny loans for self-employment to some of the poorest people in that country. Professor Yunus is also one of the world’s most effective champions of the “yes, we can” spirit. Decades ago, the economics professor and Nobel Peace Prize laureate described his search for new bank clients as a process of “looking for the most timid.” He wasn’t looking for the villagers who were the first to step forward to ask for a microloan of less than $10. He was looking for those who were last to come forward and who trusted their abilities the least. To those villagers, he and his staff would say, “Yes you can.” Thirty-three years later, nearly 8 million members of Grameen Bank (a total of 40 million when you count their family members) are saying “yes, we can” to the whole world. Since its inception, Grameen Bank has lent more than $8 billion to the poor in Bangladesh. So how does one start an enterprise that reaches nearly 40 million people in one’s own country and touches the lives of tens of millions more in replications around the world? Dr. Yunus had his own “yes, we can” moment as a young economics professor, when he faced an agonizing famine that left him doubting his value as a teacher and as a human being. He was so shaken by the sight of people dying of starvation that when he set foot in Jobra, the village next to his campus, all he wanted to do was to see if he could be of use to one person for one day — not 40 million people, just one. It was in that village that he met a stool-maker who horrified him when she explained that she earned only 2 cents a day for her beautiful craftsmanship. With no money to buy the bamboo she needed, Sufia Khatun was forced to borrow from a lender who demanded that she sell her finished stools back to him at a price he set—a price so low that she made only 2 cents a day profit. When Dr. Yunus asked whether she could earn more if she were freed from the lender, she told him, “Yes, I can.” Professor Yunus had a student look for other villagers who were in the same dilemma. The student found 42 people who needed a total of $27 to pay off the lender, buy their raw materials and sell their wares to the highest bidder. That’s right; all they needed was an average of 68 cents each. With her loan of less than $1, the stool-maker’s profits soared from two cents a day to $1.25 a day. Now Professor Yunus has set his sights on titans of business and industry with his social business concept. The chairmen of Dannon Inc., Intel Corp. and BASF are beating a “yes, we can” path to his door to create new nonprofit businesses that have as their sole goal improving people’s lives. The corporations can recover their initial investments in the social businesses, but all profits are plowed back into these new companies. They include a joint venture with Dannon producing nutritionally fortified yogurt for malnourished villagers; another with BASF producing chemically treated bed-nets to protect people from mosquitoes carrying malaria; and still another with Intel bringing information technology solutions to rural villages. When the president shook the hand of the Bangladeshi micro-banker at the White House ceremony, Mr. Obama touched his own past and the microfinance work his mother did in Indonesia. And when Professor Yunus opens the Microcredit Summit next April in Nairobi, Kenya, the microbanker from Bangladesh will launch the next phase of microfinance in the birthplace of Mr. Obama’s father and throughout the continent. President Obama should accompany Muhammad Yunus to that Summit in Kenya to join in the microbanker’s most inspiring appeal—a daring call to put poverty in the museums where it belongs. Yes, we can! Government House This is Australia’s second Government House; the first one was just a tent. This building was designed in England & no one really gave the practicalities much thought when the design arrived in Australia. Hence building started & as it would turn out the house is the wrong way around for the Southern Hemisphere & Sydney Harbour!!! Hence the hot kitchens got full sun & in an Australia summer that’s a real scorcher, & the servants could go outside & catch a beautiful view whilst the master of the house & official guests shivered in winter & never got much sunlight or a view in the study, bedrooms etc. Open to the public Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays &; it’s FREE! It is the official residence & reception space of the Governor of New South Wales. The first Government House of New South Wales (not this one), was a structure made of canvas & timber brought from England by the First Fleet. Built after the Fleet's arrival in January 1788, a substantial government house was located on the corner of what is now Bridge & Phillip streets in Sydney (Museum of Sydney stands there now) completed by 1789 using English bricks, native stone & a quantity of convict baked sandstock bricks from Sydney. It was extended & repaired by the following eight Governors, but was always in poor condition &; was demolished in 1846. This residence is the Governors TOWN residence (the Governors COUNTRY residence is @ Parramatta ~ see later in my pages) & was built under the direction of James Bloodsworth, a convict builder responsible for the construction of most of the colony's buildings between 1788 & 1800. The house was an architectural milestone for Australia, & the first proportionately classical building in the continent. It even included Australia's first staircase. The building adapted quickly to the Australian climate. A verandah was added by Governor King circa 1800 & a drawing room was added in a side wing in the same year. By 1816 Francis Greenway was commissioned to construct a substantial extension &; ballroom by Governor Macquarie, transforming Phillip's house into an Italianate cottage. The stables commissioned for the house by Macquarie in 1816 still stand in the Botanic Gardens & form a facade for the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. This building is best described as a small castle & retains many of its original features & nostalgic battlements & towers. Much of the Governor's Domain; to the east of the original house has survived today as the adjacent areas of parkland known as The Domain, the Royal Botanic Gardens, & also the gardens of today's Government House. Government hill Government Hill is Anchorage's oldest neighborhood. Located at the north end of town, on a hill, Government Hill butts up against the Port of Anchorage and Elmendorf Air Force Base. 2010 03 21 007 Concorde G-BBDG G-BBDG, c/n 202, was the third British Concorde built and was one of two production test aircraft. They were different in many ways from their four predecessors, making it necessary to repeat certain work to obtain certification. However, like the prototype and pre-production aircraft, Delta Golf also had flight observer's stations installed in the forward cabin. Even though 202 was called a production aircraft, it never went into service because the final version of the aircraft, as specified by the airlines, was different yet again - although not in a way that affected handling or performance certification. Ultimately it was therefore these two aircraft that did the bulk of the flying that allowed the final certification of Concorde for airline service. Delta Golf's first flight was on 13th February 1974 and was made by BAC test pilots Peter Baker and Brian Trubshaw from Filton to Fairford. The flight lasted 1hr 45 minutes and was supersonic for 12 minutes - reaching a top speed of Mach 1.4 at a height of 42,000ft. On 10th April 1974, and on its 15th flight, DG flew at Mach 2 for the first time and the following July became the first production Concorde to land at Heathrow for integration tests. In August, Delta Golf made history by becoming the first aircraft to carry 100 passengers at Mach 2. Over the next few years Delta Golf continued with an extensive flight test program for the purposes of engineering tests, CAA certifications, BA crew training and public relations and promotional work, visiting places such as South Africa, Singapore and several countries in the Middle East. Delta Golf in fact carried on flying after the 14 production aircraft had been delivered to the airlines. Work included further performance enhancements, such as the certification of a re-designed air intake profile. This modification, coupled to an uprated engine, allowed an increase in payload of 1,500-2,000lbs. Another change was the extension of the control surface trailing edges by around two inches - a modification that many now feel was part of the reason for the rudder delaminations seen on the fleet over the years. What turned out to be DG's last flight occurred on 24th December 1981 from Filton and back again with pilots Peter Baker and Roy Radford at the controls. Delta Golf was kept serviceable inside the huge Brabazon Hangar at Filton throughout early 1982 for any further development work or test flights that may have been required, however, ultimately no such flights were deemed to be necessary and DG never flew again. At the end of its flying life Delta Golf was placed in storage out on the airfield at Filton and was intially placed inside a "Dri-Clad" bag in an attempt to protect it from the elements. Unfortunately, this proved unsuccessful as water managed to get inside and cause condensation and the bag was therefore removed. British Airways had a support contract which allowed them access to DG and in April 1984 they acquired title to the aircraft and started using it as one of the main sources of spare parts. Up until that point the airline had only been flying six of its seven aircraft and had been using a four year old aircraft, G-BOAG, for spares. With access to Delta Golf, British Airways set out on returning G-BOAG to flight status. To protect their investment and to keep prying eyes from seeing what was very quickly becoming an eyesore, BA constructed a special hangar for G-BBDG at Filton. The '202 hangar', as it became known, was completed in early 1988. The aircraft (minus tail fin) was moved inside in May 1988. As Delta Golf was structurally sound, in the early 90s British Airways investigated the possibility of refitting the aircraft for airline service. This would have allowed the airline to keep six or seven aircraft flying whenever any of their Concorde fleet where grounded for routine engineering maintenance. However, the plan was found to be too costly and was rejected. The study did prove though that, in theory, if one of the seven BA aircraft suffered serious damage, parts from the damaged (and written-off) aircraft could be fitted to DG and the airframe used to bring the fleet back up to strength. That said, there were some doubts on whether a modified Delta Golf would gain certification due to the fuselage skin being slightly thinner than that of the fleet aircraft and also the fact that the life of the airframe had been reduced due to the the higher than normal stresses it was put under during the rigorous test programme, thus possibly making it unsuitable for long-term airline use. In 1995, Concorde G-BOAF's droop nose was damaged in a collision with a hangar door during a ground handling accident at Heathrow. In order to be able to return the aircraft to flying status as quickly as possible, BA decided to swap it for the droop nose on DG. Later investigation revealed that Alpha-Foxtrot's nose was not too badly damaged and it was repaired and kept as a spare. (N.B. - AF's n 2010 02 09 15 Concorde Delta Golf Concorde G-BBDG at Brooklands Museum in Surrey G-BBDG, c/n 202, was the third British Concorde built and was one of two production test aircraft (French Concorde F-WTSB, c/n 201, being the other). They were different in many ways from their four predecessors, making it necessary to repeat certain work to obtain certification. However, like the prototype and pre-production aircraft, Delta Golf also had flight observer's stations installed in the forward cabin. Even though 201 and 202 were called production aircraft, they never went into service because the final version of the aircraft, as specified by the airlines, was different yet again - although not in a way that affected handling or performance certification.
