The Clean Plate Club

The Clean Plate Club

When we were very young and still living in Montreal, Laura and Roberta were over for dinner. Mom said that if you finished all your food, you get to be in the Clean Plate Club! Roberta was so anxious that she shoveled about half of her food (rice) into her lap and onto the floor in an effort to join this exclusive club. We've never let her live it down.

This time, though, she cleaned the plate without cheating. Head to toe legitimate.

Katarina Hager’s clothing protects her from the flying dust that results from vigorously scraping plaster from the walls of Building 3 during the final (2003) excavation season in the BACH area. This movement is very different from the detailed scraping of plaster from walls during the micromorphological and conservation investigation (see CVP2005_6_23_micromorph.mov). Katarina’s aim in using the trowel this way is to remove all the plaster from the walls so the underlying bricks and mortar can be documented. During this process, her hands will get tired and dry, but archaeologists tend not to wear gloves when excavating so they can be as sensitive as possible to the changing textures of the deposits they are digging.

More kitchen stuff: the other side of the room

I haven't been taking pictures of this side of the room because the built-in wasn't cleaned off. Well, now it is. It needs work -- repair of the broken door, and repainting would be a good start. The blue counter surface will change, too, I hope. But the built-in is awesome and it will stay where it is. :)

Doors on the built-in, though old, are not original. Ideally I'd like to have someone make new doors for it that match the original style.

"Act in the Living Present - The Life of Martin Robison Delany" - by Jim Surkamp

MRD.vid1.1
MD: “I leave you here and journey on and if I never more return, farewell”
NARRATOR: Martin Delany finally gave up on America.

MRD.vid1.2
His expulsion with two others from Harvard Medical School just because of skin color convinced him that the power of reason and merit alone did not in fact determine the country’s esteemed leaders. So, scraping just a few hundred dollars,

MRD.vid1.3
he rented a crew and ship back to Africa, where his grandfather Shango had returned several generations before.

MRD.vid1.4 SHIP

MRD.vid1.5
His critics including Frederick Douglass, were legion. "You must stay here and fight for freedom," they told him.

MRD.vid1.6
He certainly reflected on his already long life:

MRD.vid1.7
the long road as one of five children in a freed family in Charles Town Virginia;

MRD.vid1.8
and after that fleeing because they illegally learned how to read, followed by the many years as a physician’s assistant in Pittsburgh,

MRD.vid1.9
and then editing two influential newspapers.

MRD.vid1.10
Most of all he remembered as he perhaps gazed at the sperm whales that
wandered into those southern latitudes . . . Of the day he was walking

MRD.vid1.11
the road to Pittsburgh in 1829 deciding - his head filled with
books and images of pharoahs and Africa - of making this pilgrimage in reverse back to Africa.

MRD.vid1.12
“Land Ho!"

MRD.vid1.13
NARRATOR: “The arrival of Martin Robison Delany in Liberia is an era in the history of African emigration, an event doubtless that will long be remembered by hundreds of thousands of Africa’s exiled children.

MRD.vid1.14
Persons from all parts of the country came to Monrovia to see this great man.”

People cheering:
MRD.vid1.15
MRD.vid1.16
MRD.vid1.17
MRD.vid1.18

MRD.vid1.19
Ridiculed and ignored in America for speaking -

MRD.vid1.20
embraced by the thousands here for speaking - how strange.

MRD.vid1.21
MD: “The regeneration of the African race can only be effected by its own efforts, the efforts of its own self and whatever aid may come from other sources; and it must, in this venture succeed, as God leads the movement and His hand guides the way.”

MRD.vid1.22
“Face thine accusers, scorn the rack and rod and, if thou hast truth to utter,

MRD.vid1.23
speak and leave the rest to God."

MRD.vid1.24
But we pushed on to Abeokuta.

MRD.vid1.25
Africa taught Martin Delany its mysteries.
MD: “The principle markets to see all the wonders

MRD.vid1.26
is in the evening. As the shades of evening deepen,

MRD.vid1.27
every woman lights her little lamp and, to the distant

MRD.vid1.28
observer, presents the beautiful appearance of innumerable stars.”

MRD.vid1.29
“But in the entire Aku country one is struck by the beautiful country which continually spreads out in every direction.”

MRD.vid1.30
Africa also taught him its nightmares. . .
I read August 13th in the West African Herald:

MRD.vid1.31
“King Dahomey is about to make the great Custom in honor of the late King Gezo.

MRD.vid1.32
Determined to surpass all former monarchs, a great pit has been dug which is to

MRD.vid1.33
contain human blood enough to float a canoe. Two thousand persons will be sacrificed on this occasion.

MRD.vid1.34
The king has sent his army to make some excursions at the expense of some weaker tribes. The younger people will be sold into slavery. The older persons will be killed At the Grand Custom.”

MRD.vid1.35
MD: “Whole villages are taken.”

“Farewell, farewell my loving friends, farewell. . .”

MRD.vid1.36
The jasmine smells of Africa are tonight less fragrant than my scented memory of soft honey-suckled summer’s night breezes in Virginia long ago, and awaking to the mockingbird.

{MRD.5:37} END PART 1 TO BLACK

MRD.vid1.37
MRD.vid1.38
NARRATOR: On April 10th, 1860 at Lagos, Martin Delany and Robert Campbell

MRD.vid1.39
boarded ship for London and Birmingham

MRD.vid1.40
to seek backers for a plan to build freedman’s cotton farms in the Niger
Valley.

MRD.vid1.41
They would undersell, at the gold price of fourteen cents a pound, all the slave wrought cotton from the plantations back home.

MRD.vid1.42
To make bales of cotton rot on the docks of Charleston and New Orleans as it were.

MRD.vid1.43
MD: When I was growing up in Pittsburgh, my children’s age – I worked hours and hours inscribing with a fine needle the Lord Prayer –

MRD.vid1.44
all of it – on the face of an English six pence like this one.

Kaaba 'DC9() al-Każbah

Kaaba 'DC9() al-Każbah

The Kaaba (Arabic: 'DC9() al-Każbah IPA: [”ćlČkć•bP], English: The Cube)[1] is a cuboid-shaped building in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, and is the most sacred site in Islam.[2] The Qur'an states that the Kaaba was constructed by Abraham and his son Ishmael, after Ishmael had settled in Arabia.[3] The building has a mosque built around it, the Masjid al-Haram. All Muslims around the world face the Kaaba during prayers, no matter where they are.
One of the Five Pillars of Islam requires every Muslim to perform the Hajj pilgrimage at least once in his or her lifetime if they are able to do so. Multiple parts of the Hajj require pilgrims to walk seven times around the Kaaba in a counter-clockwise direction (as viewed from above). This circumambulation, the Tawaf, is also performed by pilgrims during the Umrah (lesser pilgrimage).[2] However, the most dramatic times are during the Hajj, when, officially, about 6 million pilgrims gather to circle the building on the same day.[4][5]

The Kaaba is located at exactly 21.25.21.15°N 39.49.34.1°E inside the Masjid al-$arm ("The Sacred Mosque") in the center of Mecca. A large masonry structure in the shape of a cuboid, it is made of granite quarried from nearby hills. Standing upon a 25 cm (10 in) marble base that projects outwards about 35 cm (14 in),[2] it is approximately 13.1 m (43 ft) high, with sides measuring 11.03 m (36.2 ft) by 12.86 m (42.2 ft).[6][7]
Al-&ajaru l-Aswad, "the Black Stone", is located in the Kaaba's eastern corner. Its northern corner is known as the Ruknu l-ä*rq+, "the Iraqi corner", its western as the Ruknu sh-Shm+, "the Levantine corner", and its southern as Ruknu l-Yaman+ "the Yemeni corner".[2][7] The four corners of the Kaaba roughly point toward the four cardinal directions of the compass.[2] Its major (long) axis is aligned with the rising of the star Canopus toward which its southern wall is directed, while its minor axis (its east-west facades) roughly align with the sunrise of summer solstice and the sunset of winter solstice.[8][9]

The Kaaba is inside the Masjid al Haram in Mecca
The Kaaba is covered by a black silk and gold curtain known as the kiswah, which is replaced annually during the hajj.[10][11] Two-thirds of the way up is a band of gold embroidered Qur'anic text, including the Shahada, the Islamic declaration of faith.
In modern times, entry to the Kaaba's interior is only permitted on rare occasions for a small number of guests. The entrance is a door set 2 m (7 ft) above the ground on the north-eastern wall of the Kaaba, which acts as the façade.[2] In 1979 the 300 kg gold doors made by chief artist Ahmad bin Ibrahim Badr, replaced the old silver doors made by his father, Ibrahim Badr in 1942.[12] There is a wooden staircase on wheels, usually stored in the mosque between the arch-shaped gate of Bank Shaybah and the well of Zamzam. Inside the Kaaba, the floor is made of marble and limestone. The interior walls are clad with marble halfway to the roof; The marble is inset with Qur'anic inscriptions: The wall directly adjacent to the entrance of the Kaaba has 5 tablets inlaid with the inscriptions The top part of the walls are covered with a green cloth embroidered with gold Qur'anic verses. Caretakers anoint the marble cladding with scented oil used on the Black Stone outside.
There is also a semi-circular wall opposite, but not connected to, the north-west wall of the Kaaba known as the hat+m. This is 90 cm (35 in) in height and 1.5 m (4.9 ft) in width, and is composed of white marble. At one time the space lying between the hat+m and the Kaaba belonged to the Kaaba itself, and for this reason it is not entered during the tawaf. Some believe that the graves of prophet Ismail and his mother Hagar[2] are located in this space.
Muslims throughout the world face the Kaaba during prayers, which they perform five times a day. For most places around the world, coordinates for Mecca suffice. Worshippers in the Masjid al-Haram pray in Concentric circles around the Kaaba.

Drawing of the Kaaba. See key at left for details
Black Stone on the south-east corner.
Entry door, on the East wall 2.13 metres above ground level. It is accessed using a set of portable steps.
Rainwater spout made of gold. This was added in the rebuilding of 1627 after the previous year's rain caused three of the four walls to collapse.
Gutter, also added in 1627 to protect the foundation from groundwater.
Hatim, a low wall originally part of the Kaaba. Pilgrims do not walk in the area between this wall and the Kaaba. Some believe this area contains the graves of Haajara and Ismail.
Al-Multazam, the part of the wall between the Black Stone and the entry door.

Happiness is not a commodity.

Happiness is not a commodity.

Many children in families where domestic violence has occurred appeared to be "parentified." They are forced to grow up faster than their peers, often taking on the responsibility of cooking, cleaning and caring for younger children. Laura Gillberg, MSW, is the child and adolescent program director at Sarah's Inn, an agency in Oak Park, Illinois. She stated, "Many of these children were not allowed to have a real childhood. They don't trust their fathers because of his role as an abuser and they may have been worried about what to expect when coming home. They learned at a young age to be prepared for anything."

Children may also be isolated. Typical activities such as having friends over to their house may be impossible due to the chaotic atmosphere. "Kids aren't going to have their friends over when mom has a black eye." However, school performance is not always obviously affected. Children may respond by being overachievers.

Gillberg noticed that children in domestic violence tend to be either extremely introverted or extremely extroverted. Psychosomatic problems (aches and pains for no apparent reason) are common; these children's eating and sleeping patterns tend to be disrupted. Children who witness domestic violence can develop behavior problems, including aggression and violent outbursts.

Underlying all these "symptoms" of domestic violence are children's emotional responses: i.e. anger - misery - intense terror - fear of dying - fear of the loss of a parent. Children may feel rage, guilt, or a sense of responsibility for the violence, which can stifle emotional and social development. To learn and grow into a healthy adult, children must feel confident in the world and in themselves. Domestic violence can wipe out a child's confidence and leave them shocked.

Lost Boys of Sudan

Many of the youngsters who survived the exodus from Sudan were girls. They were often absorbed into foster homes, becoming domestic servants cooking, cleaning, chopping wood and on occasion entering into 'arranged' marriages and fetching a dowry for their adoptive parents. Kakuma camp, Kenya.

I met him at the candy store.
He turned and smiled at me and I was surprised enough to smile back. This was not a children's candy store, mind you--this was the kind of place you went to buy expensive imported chocolate truffles for your boss's wife because you felt guilty for having sex with him when you were both at a conference in Milwaukee.
Hypothetically speaking, of course.
I've been hit on plenty of times, mostly by men with little finesse who thought what was between their legs made up for what they lacked between their ears.
Sometimes I went home with them anyway, just because it felt good to want and be wanted, even if it was mostly fake.
The problem with wanting is that it's like pouring water into a vase full of stones. It fills you up before you know it, leaving no room for anything else. I don't apologize for who I am or what I've done in--or out--of bed.
I have my job, my house and my life, and for a long time I haven't wanted anything else.
Until Dan. Until now.

FRANK HOHMAN

FRANK HOHMAN

Frank Hohman- The last of the great journeyman butchers
by Jessica Kane

At the Grand Union in Warrensburg, behind a set of plastic curtains in a refrigerated room, veteran butcher Frank Hohman, a towering man with a peaceful smile and blood on his apron, stands with a sharp knife before a primal cut of top round. With enormous steady hands, he artfully and effortlessly cuts off the excess fat and slices the slab into perfect juicy steaks. Beside him, stands his apprentice, a young man learning the art of meat cutting. He will study with Frank six months before he’s officially earned the title of meat cutter.
“Apprenticeships aren’t what they used to be,” said Frank.
When Frank first learned to cut meat back in 1965 in Long Island, he served as an apprentice for three years, and then served a fourth year to become a journeyman, which is a breed of butcher that’s almost completely extinct.
“It means you’re supposed to know what you’re doing,” added Frank.
The world of meat cutting has changed dramatically since 1971, when Frank and his wife moved Upstate and he started as a butcher with Grand Union. Back then, when a butcher got a delivery, what they received was practically the whole animal. Sometimes, with the skins and the fur on.
“You had to be like a surgeon,” Frank explained. “You had to know where to stick the knife to make the right cut. If you put the knife in the wrong spot you could loose 20 steaks.”
And that’s before they had rails, so a butcher had to carry these animals on their shoulder and hang them on a hook, a sharp hook, that if you missed, you could easily hang your hand on instead.
It was a dangerous profession to be sure, and injury wasn’t uncommon.
Frank still has the three puncture holes in one of his legs as a reminder of this.
Back then, there also wasn’t much concern about bacteria, and those carcasses that hung on hooks were not refrigerated - they’d hang out in room temperature until they were cut. And the meat grinder was only washed once a week.
Nobody thought of illness back then. In fact, the only strange thing Frank remembers finding in any of the meat he worked with was the time he found a gold nugget in some chop meat. The nugget had been mutilated from being in the cutter, but it turned out to be a gold ring that somebody lost somewhere, and when no one claimed it, he kept it, and it’s still in his jewelry box today.
These days, the meat industry is unrecognizable from how it used to be. All the meat delivered to the Grand Union today is packaged in what are called primal cuts, which are sections of the carcass that have already been separated. The word butcher isn’t even used anymore, except when referring to people who slaughter animals. People who cut meat are simply called “meat cutters.” Meat cutters then take these slabs, remove all the stamps, trim the excess, slice it, package it, and give it to someone to put in the cases.
All the meat is of course refrigerated properly and the meat grinder as well everything else is thoroughly cleaned and sanitized every night.
“With all the bacteria and everything now, you can’t take chances,” Frank said.
One thing that hasn’t changed is Frank’s old school work ethic.
“I get very particular on certain things,” he told me.
Every item in his cases gets Frank’s undivided attention.
The fat is trimmed off so people aren’t paying more than they need to, the wrappers are always neat, and the meat is always placed right side up on the trays.
Frank has now been living and working in the Adirondacks for over 36 years. He and his wife raised their four kids here, who are now all grown up - three teachers and an electrician.
“It’s a different atmosphere than down in the city,” he said. “Not so hustle and bustle, hurry up and get it done. You have to get your job done but you don’t have that city type of pressure.”
When he’s not cutting meat, there are lots of things Frank enjoys doing. One of these is eating meat, and Frank’s favorite is a porterhouse steak, rare, “about so thick,” he said, holding his fingers at about 2 inches.
“And I have good cholesterol,” he added.
Frank also likes to spend time in his yard gardening, or on his boat fishing for perch or bass. He also enjoys hunting and has his own little meat shop at home where he processes deer.
What he enjoys most, though, is staying healthy. “I think health is the biggest thing. I’ve had a couple of little bouts and lemme tell you, you gotta be healthy, nothing matters unless you’re feeling good.”

Don't quit on me...

If eyes could speak...that's probably what he is saying.
(Thru the french doors while I was out trying to take a *b* pic.)

A little update...

I think he has improved...but the biggest problem (right now) is he is not consistent, or trustworthy with the other animals :( The greyhounds are just plain SCARED of him...and Sam will fight him, which is not good. Then he has barking issues, and the anxiety...it's way more then I was told about. We are taking him to get his teeth cleaned on Monday...then on Thursday we have a professional behaviorist and trainer coming for an in home appt. to give us her best assessment of his issues and how much of it we can expect to train out of him. The dachshund rescue we contacted said "forget it, he'll always be that way and will never change." So that was pretty disheartening :( I guess hiring this trainer is the last ditch effort....we talked an hour on the phone - she seems really straight forward and honest, and has been training dogs for 25 years and has all the degrees...so, at least she's qualified to make some judgements about him. It's really a week by week thing. We're still hanging in there with him tho...trying!

Today I found picture number six at work. I knew on Friday where I would be working today and what kind of job it would be but and I thought I knew what to expect, boy oh boy was I wrong. I suppose a little background is required to put things in context.

I work for a company who's main line of business is for want of a better word, sanitation. We don't do rubbish disposal, far from it. Most of the men at work remove asbestos, PCB's and other hazardous materials no one wants to deal with, this includes cleaning up after you have blown your head off, hung yourself, or your cats have eaten you, you get the idea.

This is not normally something I do, our company takes on small building projects and that's what they need me for as a trained carpenter, better pay less brains fewer cats and the only blood I usually see is my own. Well they are a little short handed on the clean up side of the business for a variety of reasons, some obvious some not, but today I was handed a job normally reserved for the clean up crew. This didn't bother me very much a job is a job and I am not fussy.

My task today was to remove the floor in a house that had some mold problems, I have dealt with this kind of thing before so I packed my gas mask and a new gas filter away in the van, grabbed my colleague for the day, a young man of 22 with a fondness for tequila and a cheerful sense of humour.

Now it's only fair to warn you that if you have a faint heart a weak stomach or are only interested in sugar, spice and all things nice now is the time to stop reading (assuming people read these) and go on about your business happy in the knowledge that if you leave a comment I will drop by and admire your art and that I appreciated your time here, if not then read on.

We arrived at the house, well it could have been a house, it could have been part junkyard, part forest or it could have been a house in any horror film you have seen. I navigated the museum of gardening tools, they had an extensive collection, though I couldn't see any signs of gardening activity, despite the 15 rakes, not counting the ones holding up the veranda roof.

After successfully locating the door of this ... habitat, habitation, uh ... house. we went inside, I knew I was inside because it wasn't as windy other than that the inside looked much like the outside, dark, cold and every single available space was packed full of "things" they had everything and in some cases 6 or 7 of everything. I thought well this is just the hall the rest of the house must be empty..... I looked for a light switch. Half an hour later I found one.

Now we photographers are used to all kinds of light, good light, bad light, beautiful light, glowing light etc. This was the first time in my life I have seen light that oozed. The light fittings were either so aged or so nictoine stained a feeble orange light oozed across the walls and illuminated ..... barely.

I looked around and could barely take in what I was seeing. In Sweden the standard of living is high and I rarely see poor living conditions, I have seen them in other countries and even lived in some of them, I was thoroughly shocked by the absolute squalor these people lived in, in a normal middle class neighborhood in Kalmar. I think I could probably write all night and still not manage to encompass that house. There is a TV show in Sweden called "angry carpenter" he helps people who have building problems with their homes, he would have left about 5 minutes into the job.

I put on my cheerful smiley face my colleagues are used to seeing and we started packing things in boxes. I learned a lot about the couple that lived there while packing away their things. The "man of the house" and I use inverted commas because he doesn't deserve the title, was a hobby photographer and some of his photographs were quite nice, I packed away around 20 cameras of various shapes sizes and ages .. some from probably around 1914 even. We packed away his collection of weapons including a loaded German Luger from world war II, he had lying around and a suitcase of spice girls paraphernalia ... this was more disturbing than the loaded pistol.

When it came to more feminine items I began to feel somewhat sad. Photographs of their children, an entire wardrobe of home decoration magazines. I know this will sound like wild speculation on my part but I have asked around and learned a little more that confirms my speculations, I imagined a woman living in this home doing her best to raise her children surrounded by squalor, dreaming of a beautiful clean home ( the kitchen was the only part of the house that was clean ) her husband, doing nothing but fill their home with his expensive toys and ignoring the needs of his family. I felt desperately sad for the woman and her children and more disgusted and angry at the man as the day passed.

I spoke to a neighbor who came for a curious look see as they usually do when I do

Yes, I have ONE Mouse in my apartment -- AND I let him/her IN!! Not really by Choice --- kind of ---- sort of --- maybe by accident.
A few days ago there was such a racket going on behind the wall in my Living Room, and I convinced myself that it just couldn't POSSIBLY be mice -- too loud, too constant -- in the middle of the day. I was sure it just had to be a trapped bird! (-:
So I took a piece of floor molding off and dug just a tiny little hole right by the floor to let out that poor bird -- yeah, right! Out drops this tiny Baby Mouse about the size of a Quarter and off he/she goes.
He/she has been into the bird food bin (obviously) and gotten stuck there twice when I forgot to secure the lid, darts out of it's new little home behind a curtain, behind a storage bin at all times of the day, startling me, but OF COURSE not scaring me --- (after all it IS a Rodent, and you know how I feel about my Rodents, little Red Squirrels in particular) and pretty much has become a source of entertainment for me and Mr. Ree the last couple of days. (Jerica and Delilah don't seem to even notice)
I know many folks will think I'm Nuts -- I am you know --- for not "disposing" of this creature. But what to do, what to do?? I can't put it "back" through the hole, I won't put in outside in Winter, I won't put in a shoebox and keep it confined as a "Pet", and God forbid I would never do anything to cause it's demise.
Since it is ONLY a Baby (doubled in size tho already) --- ONLY ONE, with no mate around that I know of, doesn't seem interested in the kitchen area (Yet) ---- guess I'll just let it be for a while longer.
That is except to try to get a few pics when I can. But the bird food bin shots didn't work out too well a couple of days ago (too dark) -- so when he/she scampered into the bathroom I grabbed my camera and went in pursuit. Those didn't turn out so well either --- mainly because when I saw them enlarged, I wasn't very happy with what my bathroom floor looked like SO close up! I deleted them all except the very last photo. (At least from that one, you can see it's not from lack of having cleaning supplies handy!) At around midnight 2 nights ago I find I am scrubbing my Bathroom --- "just in case" my little friend decides to take our little game of "Cat and Mouse" there again. And YEA! He/she accommodated me -- trying to hide behind the very colorful stand I have to hold odds and ends in the Bathroom corner. So I got a Bright colorful picture that looks relatively clean -- and normal except that it IS of a Mouse in my House -- told you I was nuts!
I looked on line to try to find one single GOOD thing about mice and gotta say -- didn't find anything. My thought is --- well, they do tend to make one keep their homes a little cleaner! (-:
You must admit this little squirt is really, really CUTE though --- you agree ---- don't you? Don't You?

Ahh, yes, I forgot to mention --- I paid over $700 last Winter because while up at my "old" home a family of mice had built a nest in the Clutch casing in my Subaru about the size of a basketball! I DO know how destructive they can be!!

SILVER CLEANING CLOTHES. SILVER CLEANING

Silver cleaning clothes. How to clean stove glass.

Silver Cleaning Clothes

    cleaning
  • Make (something or someone) free of dirt, marks, or mess, esp. by washing, wiping, or brushing

  • (clean) free from dirt or impurities; or having clean habits; "children with clean shining faces"; "clean white shirts"; "clean dishes"; "a spotlessly clean house"; "cats are clean animals"

  • the act of making something clean; "he gave his shoes a good cleaning"

  • Remove the innards of (fish or poultry) prior to cooking

  • make clean by removing dirt, filth, or unwanted substances from; "Clean the stove!"; "The dentist cleaned my teeth"

    clothes
  • Bedclothes

  • (clothing) a covering designed to be worn on a person's body

  • A feature of all modern human societies is the wearing of clothing, a category encompassing a wide variety of materials that cover the body. The primary purpose of clothing is functional, as a protection from the elements.

  • Items worn to cover the body

  • apparel: clothing in general; "she was refined in her choice of apparel"; "he always bought his clothes at the same store"; "fastidious about his dress"

    silver
  • made from or largely consisting of silver; "silver bracelets"

  • A precious shiny grayish-white metal, the chemical element of atomic number 47

  • a soft white precious univalent metallic element having the highest electrical and thermal conductivity of any metal; occurs in argentite and in free form; used in coins and jewelry and tableware and photography

  • A shiny gray-white color or appearance like that of silver

  • Silver dishes, containers, or cutlery

  • coat with a layer of silver or a silver amalgam; "silver the necklace"

Birdhouse and Onesies 011

Birdhouse and Onesies 011

This design is based on an ACEO I made, called FOCUS. The swirls are black, yellow, red, orange, green, and purple; two swirls of each color. In addition to the swirls there are color swatches in green, purple, red, orange, and yellow. The neckline and diaper line feature cute silver dots, and the three crotch snaps are colored in with silver. The back is not painted, but does have some slight marks from where the paint swatches leaked through. I know most clothing artists would put cardboard between sides to avoid such "leakage" but I think that it adds character to the clothes!

The onesie is size 3-6 months (12-18 pounds ... 5.5-8.2 kg), is 100% cotton, and was made by Carter's baby (high quality brand). Washing directions say "machine wash warm... tumble dry medium"

This onesie is what I would consider "upcycled" as I dug it out of the kids' too-small box. I don't think this one was ever worn, and if it was, then it wasn't worn much, as there are no stains, it's not stretched out and the tag is not faded. Regardless, I will wash it again before I ship it to be absolutely sure that it is clean (and hopefully fur-free as I do have an abundance of pets here).

November 8, 2009
So I got out of the shower today and noticed how weird the towel looked on my head so I decided to take pics. I know sounds weird...

I WAS going to take some pictures of my fist for someone who requested it but for some reason this one stood out better. I'll do the fist picture though, just not today.

Speaking of which, if anyone has suggestions for things they want me to do (within reason) just let me know!

TRF: It was about 70 outside today! If only it'd stay this way...

While cleaning the bathroom in preparation for my daughter's first birthday, I was reminded of how when I was a kid how much I loved playing in the sprinkler or to go swimming.

Though this is not an actual sprinkler, and is my shower head instead, it just reminded me of summertime, and the fun of running through a sprinkler in the grass.

aBF Day 313

After letting the sheep out this morning, the group (Dennis, Aaron, Allie, Gordon, and myself) spent most of the day cleaning up and gutting part of the structure which will some day become a guest house for interns at 47 Ranch. It was a dirty job -- no, really, dust everywhere -- but we managed to clear up the yard and rip up the carpet and floorboards to reveal beautiful wood floors in the living and dining rooms. Here's a pic of Allie and I, whom Dennis started to refer to as "the demolition girls." Don't cross us, we've got crowbars and we know how to use 'em.

original infant of prague

original infant of prague

The devotion to the Holy Child Jesus has long been a tradition of the Catholic Church for a very long time. This devotion is a veneration of our Lord's sacred Infancy. Many saints had a very strong devotion to the Divine Child, notably St. Therese of the Child Jesus, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Anthony of Padua, and St. Teresa of Avila.

Prague is the capitol city of the Czech Republic, which is at the very central of Europe with Germany, Poland, Russia and Austria as its neighbours. The history of the Infant Jesus of Prague started in the 17th century when a statue of the Infant Jesus was brought into Bohemia (now Czech Republic) and eventually was given to the Discalced Carmelites in Prague. Since then, the statue has remained in Prague and has drawn many devotees worldwide to go and honor the Holy Child. Many graces, blessings, favors and miraculous healings have been received by many who petitioned before the Infant Jesus.

History
The exact origin of the Infant Jesus statue was not truly known, but historical sources point to a small 28cm high sculpture of the Holy Child with a bird in his right hand carved in around the year 1340. Many other Infant Jesus sculptures were also carved by famous masters throughout Europe in the Middle Ages.

The popularity of the Child Jesus grew in the Baroque period in Spain which may have been caused by the visions of St. Teresa of Avila. A number of sculptures made in Spain eventually found their way to Prague. These sculptures were made of wax, ivory, and bronze and were dressed in garments reflecting the aristocratic fashion of that period.

It is unknown to this date which of those early sculptures that got to Prague was the exact origin of the Infant Jesus of Prague. It was speculated that it came from a monastery in Bohemia and from there it was obtained by Dona Isabella Manrique who gave it as a wedding gift to her daughter Marie Manrique who married a noble of the Czech kingdom. Later, the Holy Infant statue was again given to Marie's daughter Polyxena as a wedding gift in 1587. In 1628, Lady Polyxena presented the statue to the Carmelites at the Church of the Virgin Mary the Victorious in Mala Strana saying, "I am giving you what I most esteem of my possessions. Keep the sculpture in reference and you will be well off" (*FN1*). This statue then became known as the Infant Jesus of Prague. It stands 47 cm high (includes a 2cm base) and has a long gown around the wax body.

Shortly after 1628, the Saxons and the Swedes took turns to invade Prague and the Carmelites had to flee and the veneration of the Holy Infant ceased. It was not until 1638 that a young priest named Fr. P. Cyril, a Matre Dei, returned to Prague and found the Holy Infant statue buried in the ruins of the Lady of Victory church. Fr. Cyril cleaned the statue and placed it in the oratory for worship. While he was praying before the Infant Jesus, he heard the Infant Jesus say, "Have pity on Me and I will have pity on you. Give Me My hands and I will give you peace. The more you honor Me, the more I will bless you". (*FN2*)

The repairing of the statue's hand was a miracle since Fr. Cyril and his peers did not have the financial resources nor the know-how to repair it. Through prayer, Fr. Cyril asked the Blessed Virgin Mary in several occassions to to provide the necessary funds for fixing the Infant statue. The Divine Infant spoke to him again, "Place Me near the entrance of the sacristy and you will receive aid" (*FN3*). Fr. Cyril then did what he was told and in a few days time, the statue was fixed by a man who came to the sacristy to offer help.

Since the statue was fixed, a number of miracles had occurred and the word began to spread, resulting in a large increase of veneration to the Holy Child. This includes the Czech nobles as well. These early miracles were recorded in a book by P. Emerich a St Stephano, published in German in 1736 and in Czech in 1749 (*FN4*).

In 1641, an altar was built for the Infant Jesus in the church, and in 1644 a chapel was built, but was not completed until 1654. Many nobles of the time had greatly supported the Infant Jesus, among them were Lady Polyxena, King Ferdinard (Czech), King Charles Gustav(Sweden), and Bernard Ignatius of the Lords of Martinic. It is interesting to note that the crown over the Divine Infant's head came from Bernard Ignatius, who presented the Infant statue with a little gold crown set with precious stones and jewels on January 14, 1651 during a procession that carried the Infant Jesus statue from the Lady of Victory church to other Prague churches. The Infant Jesus was solemnly coronated on April 4, 1655 by the Archbishop Josef Corta acting for Cardinal Harrach III who was sick.

After that period, Prague went through more wars and unrest but the church and the Infant Jesus chapel was miraculously protected. In 1776 the altar was rebuilt using marble and two huge sculptures of the Blessed Virgin Mary and

Jessica

Jessica

My friend Jess is a graduate student in English Rhetoric. That means she knows how to write, and it also means she's a book geek like I am. I don't always know where my ideas come from, but I know I had this one just for her. The image of books floating around her unsupported in the air struck me as somehow appropriate for a person who seems to have a supernatural command of language and a deep respect for the art.

Everything seen here was shot in situ in front of studio lights. The books are being held up by "assistants" - meaning my wife, and Jess' boyfriend - at various distances from the camera. A lot of care was taken to get the positioning just right so that nothing overlapped with anything important - and so that Faulkner overlapped with the rather boring back cover of "The Rhetorical Tradition." To accomplish this, I scribed index lines on my camera's ground glass with wax pencil (since I was using flash metering and manual focusing, this didn't screw anything up). I removed the markings once I was done with the aid of a chemical cleaner.

This is a composite image, with fifteen separate layers of 16-bit, 13 megapixel originals. It is, obviously, rather large and slow to process. As is my habit, I resisted the urge to go with strongly pictorial effects - I eschew grunge, draganizer, single-image HDR, and other aggressive processing of the natural image tones. Instead, I concentrated on making a natural-looking scene with a surreal element - the floating books.
