Beautiful music
3 pretty Vietnamese girls played beautiful music on these traditional stringed instruments at a restaurant called Com Viet in Hanoi. They were really adept and skilful and I thoroughly enjoyed the performance.
My heart will go on...

Another randomly cool shot (filled with fabulous bokeh) of my Dad's Mandolin.
I was playing with it yesterday, and so my fingers are extremely tender (but in a good way ;D ). My fiddle seems extremely difficult to play after using the mandolin. The mandolin is so easy to play, and the picking is extremely fun. Not that I'm two timing my fiddle mind you, I could never leave my dear screechy. It's still my 'Ain true love'. :D
mandolin case
I bought this mandolin on Ebay a few years ago, and it came in a semi-crushed cardboard box. I didn't want to take it out of the house without a case, and I wanted to make something out of denim, so the funkilicious denim mando case was born.

Louie Armstrong (1901-1971) by Photographer Unknown to Me
Louis Daniel Armstrong, nicknamed Satchmo or Pops, was an American jazz trumpeter and singer from New Orleans, Louisiana.
Coming to prominence in the 1920s as an "inventive" cornet and trumpet player, Armstrong was a foundational influence in jazz, shifting the music's focus from collective improvisation to solo performance.
With his instantly recognizable deep and distinctive gravelly voice, Armstrong was also an influential singer, demonstrating great dexterity as an improviser, bending the lyrics and melody of a song for expressive purposes. He was also greatly skilled at scat singing, vocalizing using sounds and syllables instead of actual lyrics.
Renowned for his charismatic stage presence and voice almost as much as for his trumpet-playing, Armstrong's influence extends well beyond jazz music, and by the end of his career in the 1960s, he was widely regarded as a profound influence on popular music in general.
Armstrong was one of the first truly popular African-American entertainers to "cross over," whose skin-color was secondary to his amazing talent in an America that was severely racially divided. It allowed him socially acceptable access to the upper echelons of American society that were highly restricted for a person of color. While he rarely publicly politicized his race, often to the dismay of fellow African-Americans, he was privately a huge supporter of the Civil Rights movement in America.
Beaver Harris
Beaver Harris:
The 360 Degree
Music Experience
From Rag Time to No Time
360 Records LP 2001
From Rag Time to No Time was one of the most subversive recordings of its time. Recorded in late 1974 and early ’75, it sought nothing less than proclaim jazz to be a unified field, instead of a Balkanized muddle. Anyone who thought drummer Beaver Harris to be an unlikely candidate to do so was probably only aware of his work with Fire Music principals like Albert Ayler and Archie Shepp. Harris’ resume was actually remarkably well rounded; not only did he work with icons like Monk and Rollins, but he played with old-schoolers like vocalist Maxine Sullivan, trumpeter Doc Cheatham and clarinetist Herb Hall, all of whom make vital contributions to the album. Tellingly, the only other musician on the album with comparable avant-garde credentials is pianist Dave Burrell, who was (and remains) as grounded in Joplin, Morton and Waller as he is in later styles (on subsequent 360 Music Experience recordings, Burrell had co-leader billing; here, he is listed as Music Director). Harris not only enlisted a unique cross-section of musicians from the jazz community (Ron Carter, Jimmy Garrison and Cecil McBee are the bassists), but Caribbean and Indian musicians, as well.

National Saxophone Choir of Great Britain, Chamberlein Square, Birmingham
The National Saxophone Choir of Great Britain is resident in Birmingham. At the time of this shot, members of the choir appeared through Paradise Forum whilst playing "Over The Rainbow", coming to a stand in Chamberlein Square. This was a very effective performance, filling the square with exquisite sound! After this, it was announced they would be performing in Adrian Boult Hall as part of Artsfest, where the 30 minute recital gained them a standing ovation.
E flat Contra-bass Saxophone
I am not sure how much this contra-bass saxophone weighs! It is being carried by Dave, the player, and the box it normally rests in when Dave plays it standing up is being carried by another memer of the band. Some onlookers are still getting over the fact that the National Saxophone Choir of Great Britain has just performed a short piece in the square, as part of the Artsfest.

WWI German Soldiers Celebrate Christmas 1916
This is a photograph from my personal collection. On the back, written in pencil, are the words: "Pa 1916." There is no indication which soldier is "Pa." There is also no indication as to where the photograph was taken
A soldier to the right plays music on an old piano. He is accompanied by another soldier playing the violin. The soldiers are drinking dark beer and smoking cigars and cigarettes. The soldier on the left is holding a rag or perhaps it is an apron. It could be that he is the bartender for the group.
A huge, elaborately decorated Christmas tree looms in the corner, and the walls are festooned with evergreen branches. No doubt about it; it's a Christmas scene. These soldiers are lucky. While they are not with their families, at least they are gathered with comrades and friends around a warming stove and not freezing in the trenches.
The hand-lettered sign in the lower righthand corner of the photograph translates literally as "2nd War Christmas". It is possible that "2te Kriegs=" is an abbreviation for "2te Kriegs-Nummer," which might be German for "2nd Battalion." Once again, I owe a big thanks to my flickr friend, Zelle, for the translation.
I'm guessing the soldiers are members of the German Ulan regiment Graf Haeseler (2. Brandenburgisches) Nr. 11 (Saarburg)
I think Graf (Count) Haeseler means that they were associated somehow with Count Gottlieb Ferdinand Albert Alexis von Haeseler. (From 1879 he headed the military history department of the general staff, and from 1890 to 1903 he was General of the Cavalry and head of the 16th Army Corps in Metz. In 1905 he received the rank of a General Field Marshall.) I don't know if he commanded them or not. (He would have been in his 80s during WWI.) I think it means that they were named in his honor and/or perhaps he is the one who originally raised the outfit.
The word Brandenburgisches I think refers to the German state of Brandenburg, where Von Haesler was from. Saarburg is a city in the Rhineland-Palatinate state of Germany, and perhaps that is where this outfit was based.
(I'm guessing at all this. My local library has very little material on German military history, and what information I have has been gleaned in little bits and pieces off the internet.)
Here's how I arrived at who I think they are:
By the style of their tunics (double-breasted with a plastron front), I'm pretty sure they are Ulans (light cavalry). Re-enforcing this supposition is the fact that the the fellow with his back to the piano player is wearing spurs, and the soldier on the extreme left has a leather lining on the inside of the legs of his breeches to prevent wear on his trousers from hours in the saddle.
Additionally, the number 11 is visible on the shoulderboards of some of the soldiers. That was the final clue.
Ulans (in Polish: "Ulan"; "Ulan" in German, from Turkish oglan) were originally Polish light cavalry soldiers armed with lances, sabres, pistols, and rifles. Later, Ulan units were organized in Prussia and Austria. Similar troops also existed in other European armies, where they were instead known as "lancers."
The German Ulans in WWI
In 1914 the Imperial German Army included twenty-six Ulan regiments, three of which were Guard regiments, twenty-one line (sixteen Prussian, two Wurttemberg, and three Saxon), and two from the autonomous Royal Bavarian Army. The senior of these was Ulanen-Regiment Kaiser Alexander III. von Ru?land which was first raised in 1745. All German Uhlan regiments wore Polish style "czapkas" (those "mortarboard" helmets, the original purpose of which was to deflect sabre blows to the head, also spelled as "tschapka") and tunics with plastron fronts, both in colored parade uniforms and the field grey service dress introduced in 1910.
The lance carried by the ulans (and after 1889 the entire German cavalry branch) consisted of a ten foot and five inch long tube made of rolled steel-plate, weighing three pounds and nine ounces. The lance carried below its head a small pennant in differing colors according to the province or state from which the regiment was recruited. The four edged spear-like point of the shaft was 12 inches in length and made of tempered steel. The butt end of the shaft was also pointed so that (in theory) the lance could be wielded as a double-ended weapon.
After seeing mounted action during the early weeks of World War I, the Ulan regiments were either dismounted to serve as "cavalry rifles" in the trenches of the Western Front, or transferred to the Eastern Front where more primitive conditions made it possible for horse cavalry to still play a useful role.
All twenty-six German Ulan regiments were disbanded in 1918 – 1919.

Blues brother
Saxophonist at the Old Town Square, Prague, Czech Republic
Some background information:
The Old Town Square is the central square in the Old Town quarter of Prague, which occupies more than 9.000 square metres. Located between Wenceslas Square and the Charles Bridge, it’s often bursting at the seams with tourists. Featuring various architectural styles including the Gothic Church of Our Lady before Tyn and the baroque St. Nicholas Church, the square is an oasis for travelers wearied by Prague's narrow streets. The Astronomical Clock can also be found on this square, while the tower at the Old Town Hall offers a great panoramic view.
Not only a popular meeting place, Old Town Square sees its share of celebrations (New Year's), holiday markets (Christmas and Easter), and protests. On occasion, ice-hockey and football games are shown on huge screens, drawing large crowds of fans.
In the background you can see the Church of Our Lady before Tyn as well as the Jan Hus Memorial.
The Church of Our Lady before Tyn was built in 1365 on the site of an earlier Romanesque church. Its magnificent multiple steeples are 80m high and dominate the square. Between the early 15th century and the year of 1620 it was the main Hussite church in Prague.
The Jan Hus Memorial depicts victorious Hussite warriors and Protestants who were forced into exile 200 years after Hus as well as a young mother which symbolizes national rebirth. It was unveiled in 1915 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Jan Hus’ martyrdom. The memorial was designed by Ladislav Saloun and paid for solely by public donations.
Prague itself is the capital and largest city of the Czech Republic. It’s also known as the "City of a Hundred Spires" as well as the "Golden City". It’s home to about 1.3 million people, while its metropolitan area is estimated to have a population of over 1.9 million.
Situated on the Vltava River in central Bohemia, Prague has been the political, cultural and economic centre of the Czech state for more than 1.100 years. For many decades during the Gothic and Renaissance eras Prague was the permanent seat of two Holy Roman Emperors and thus was also the capital of the Holy Roman Empire.
Since 1992 the extensive historic centre of Prague has been included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites, making the city one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe, which receives more than 4.1 million international visitors annually, as of 2009.
