I received my first canvas print this summer. I have wanted one for a long time, but firstly the print formats have never seemed right to me, and secondly the prices have always been a little steep. When I got a good offer (at 50% off) I had to try it.
This was shot with ths sb-600 bounced off the ceiling.

Luchian, Stefan (1868-1916) - 1910c. The Florist (Romanian National Art Gallery, Bucharest)

Luchian, Stefan (1868-1916) - 1910c. The Florist (Romanian National Art Gallery, Bucharest)

Oil on cardboard; 41.5 x 38 cm.

Romanian painter. He studied at the School of Fine Arts in Bucharest, graduating in 1889 and continuing his studies at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Munich and in Paris at the Académie Julian, where he was a student of William-Adolphe Bouguereau. He rejected the rigidity of academic painting early in his career, however. The Last Autumn Race (1892; Bucharest, Mus. A.), one of the few paintings known from this period, clearly illustrates the influence of Manet and Impressionism on his early work. On his return to Romania in 1892 Luchian, unwilling to restrict his work to merely copying the French artists, struggled to create an original style.

In 1900 he was left partially paralyzed by a spinal disease, but he continued to work, and it is during the next years that he created his most accomplished works. His self-portraits (e.g. 1907; Bucharest, Mus. A.) are clear evidence of his determination to overcome this personal tragedy; far from inspiring pity, these paintings emphasize the depth and the strength of his inner life. It is in landscapes such as Willows at Chiajna (c. 1907; Cluj-Napoca, Mus. A.), however, that his commitment becomes even more apparent, with joyful rhythms created by means of broad brushstrokes and contrasts of bright colours next to delicate tones. Towards the end of his life Luchian became completely immobilized. During this time flowers were his favourite subject (e.g. Safta, the Flower Girl ; Bucharest, N. Mus. A.; see also ROMANIA, fig. 9), and they became a metaphorical bridge between the artist and the outside world. The colours are still bright in these last paintings, and the loss of pastel tones makes the contrast more dramatic.

03.28

:D

- Had brunch at the Alcove in LA with Julian (SOO delicious! salmon breakfast quesadillas and fresh squeezed orange juice, hmm hmm)

- Drove all the way over to the Japanese Gardens in Van Nuys so we could see the blooming cherry blossoms and chill at the park. Little to our knowledge, we found a little pedal boating station by the lake. $12 for an hour. It was actually super hot, so it seemed like a long hour... but it was fun! Chased ducks, swatted gnats, spied on weddings and took a LOT of pictures :D

- Then went to the Glendale Galleria to do some mall shopping. Didn't accomplish much :. Got some stuff we needed from Target, though. Saw the CUTEST corgi at the pet store. Agghhh! Want it!

- After what seemed like hours at the mall, we went over to Pure Luck (vegan restaurant) in LA for dinner. YUM YUM. Got my Tofu Pesto w/ Avocado sandwich with sweet potato fries on the side. Delicious :)

- Crossed the street to get some yummy ice cream from Scoops. Once we left the store though, we stumbled upon some sort of bicycle meet. I was just guessing it was for Earth Hour, but I could be wrong. Tons of bicyclists just hanging out. It was pretty neat :)

- THEN we went all the way over to the Griffith Observatory to experience lights off for Earth Hour :D. We had to hike from our SUPER far parking spot... but we made it just in time for the observatory to shut off. Overlooked LA (only to find that no one really shut their lights off). But it was ok :). Walked around and enjoyed our time. We were going to check out the telescope, but they closed it off right when we got in line... so poo.

- After the hour was done, we hiked back down to the car and finally just went home.

--

AWESOME DAY! I loved it. Thanks so much Julian :D

Grumichama Flowers Out Today on My Fruit Tree

Grumichama Flowers Out Today on My Fruit Tree

I took these flowers today of my fruit trees that are flowering. They are tropical fruits so the names may not be familiar to some people.

The FIRST is the Grumichama. It is in full flower today and also tomorrow. The fruit is lovely. A bit like black cherries with a slight wood taste. There is also a yellow variety. The perfume is very distinctive and I just can't describe it. This morning there were a lot of bees visiting, both honey bee and native bee. Underneath there is some information I put with a grumichama flower on Flickr 20 months ago. This info came from an American source.

This is a small shrub-like tree that is a tropical fruit originally from the Amazon. A few times a year it breaks out in these magfnificent white flowers with a musky distinctive smell. The fruit is similar to a black cherry, but delicate and sweet.

An often admired but still very minor fruiting member of the Myrtaceae, the grumichama, Eugenia brasiliensis Lam. (syn. E. dombeyi Skeels), is also called grumixama, grumichameira, or grumixameira in Brazil, and sometimes Brazil cherry elsewhere.

Grumichama -- The grumichama (Eugenia brasiliensis) is more cherry-like than many so-called "cherries" but handicapped by small size, apical sepals and large seeds.

Description -- The highly ornamental tree is slender, erect, usually to 25 or 35 ft (7.5-10.5 m) high, short-trunked and heavily foliaged with opposite, oblong-oval leaves 3 1/2 to 5 in (9-16 cm) long, 2 3/8 in (5-6 cm) wide, with recurved margin; glossy, thick, leathery, and minutely pitted on both surfaces. They persist for 2 years. New shoots are rosy. The flowers, borne singly in the leaf axils, are 1 in (2.5 cm) wide; have 4 green sepals and 4 white petals, and about 100 white stamens with pale-yellow anthers. The long-stalked fruit is oblate, 1/2 to 3/4 in (1.25-2 cm) wide; turns from green to bright-red and finally dark-purple to nearly black as it ripens, and bears the persistent, purple- or red-tinted sepals, to 1/2 in (1.25 cm) long, at its apex. The skin is thin, firm and exudes dark-red juice. The red or white pulp is juicy and tastes much like a true subacid or sweet cherry except for a touch of aromatic resin. There may be 1 more or less round, or 2 to 3 hemispherical, hard, light-tan or greenish-gray seeds to 1/2 in (1.25 cm) wide and half as thick.

Origin and Distribution -- he grumichama is native and wild in coastal southern Brazil, especially in the states of Parana and Santa Catarina. It is cultivated in and around Rio de Janeiro, also in Paraguay. A specimen was growing in Hope Gardens, Jamaica, in 1880 and a tree was planted in the Botanical Gardens, Singapore, in 1888, fruited in 1903. It has long since vanished from both of these locations. An attempt to grow it in the Philippines in the early 1920's did not meet with success. Neither did a trial in Israel. An early introduction, perhaps by Don Francisco de Paula Marin in 1791, was made in Hawaii and the tree was adopted into numerous local gardens.

The United States Department of Agriculture received seeds from Mauritius in 1911 (S.P.I. #30040); plants and seeds from Bahia, Brazil, in 1914 (S.P.I. #36968), and more seeds from Mauritius in 1922 (S.P.I. #54797). Plants were set out at the Plant Introduction Station in Miami and prospered. Other plantings were made in California where it seemed even better adapted but has apparently disappeared. The United States Department of Agriculture raised seedlings at Puerto Arturo, Honduras, and transferred some plants to the Lancetilla Experimental Garden at Tela in 1926. They flourished there and flowered and fruited well.

Over the years there have been mild efforts to encourage interest in the virtues of the grumichama in Florida, mainly because of the beauty and hardiness of the tree and the pleasant flavor of the fruit but the sepals are a nuisance and there is too little flesh in proportion to seed for the fruit to be taken seriously.

Climate -- The grumichama is subtropical, surviving temperatures of 26º F (-3.33º C) in Brazil. It is better suited to Palm Beach than to southern Florida. In Hawaii, the tree fruits best from sea-level to an altitude of no more than 300 ft (90 m).

Culture -- The grumichama is of slow growth when young unless raised in a mixture of peat moss and sand and then given a thick layer of peat moss around the roots when setting out, and kept heavily fertilized. In Hawaii, it has taken 7 years to reach 7 ft. Fruiting begins when the plants are 4 to 5 years old.

Season -- The tree is regarded as remarkable for the short period from flowering to fruiting. In Florida, it has been in full bloom in late April and loaded with fruits 30 days later. The crop ripens quickly over just a few days. In Hawaii, the trees bloom and fruit from July to December, with the main crop in the fall. Trees in Brazil vary considerably in time of flowering and fruiting so that the overall season extends from November to February.

What do the flowers see?

What do the flowers see?

Being alone and looking at that flowers.
The flowers who blow & play with the breeze.
The breeze who whisper & deliver some messages.
The messages that come from someone who is far ...far away.

What do the flowers see?

They may see several creatures without root came by and passed by, millions of stars, the yellow moon, the bright sun and surely ....the colored sky.

Unfortunately, thier sight is limited just in a space where their roots settled down.

How do they do when they want to know/send some news from/to someone who is far... far away?

They may ask the other flowers on the other corners, .....you know that the flowers like talking.

However, it is just the same, they are all limited in their root space. Moerover, not every human like planting flowers.

Ahmmm.....They may ask their guests, some butterflies, some bees, some bugs, or even some worms.

However, I guessed that their guests can not fly or go that far...far away.

So, I think their hope depends on the breeze who can blow that far... far away.

Anyway, the message is just like a whispering, how do they know if someone who is far... far away can hear it? ...Moreover, if there is no breeze, how can they do?

No one knows.

No one knows.

Yeah... no one knows

............................

By the way, it does not mean hopeless.

Just try.... "I like you.... yes it is you ...not anyone else but you" the flowers whisper ....... hope he can here this.

...........................

I wish that every corner of every town has at least one flower.

I wish that buterflies, bees, bugs and even worms can visit the flowers more often.

Finally, I wish that the breeze will blow everyday.

"How do you make an egg laugh? Tell it a yolk" ~

Mrs. Ducky ventured outside this morning wearing her raincoat and bringing her umbrella and parked herself inbetween the Caladiums and ferns.
We have been having our summer rains quite regularly :)

Wish I could send some of it to parts that still need it ~

Her pocket reminded me of a "sunny side up egg... " LOLLLLLLL

Caladiums

Wikipedia ~

Caladium is a genus of flowering plants in the family Araceae. They are often known by the common name elephant ear (which they share with the closely related genera Alocasia, Colocasia, and Xanthosoma), Heart of Jesus, and Angel Wings. There are over 1000 named cultivars of Caladium bicolor from the original South American plant.

The genus Caladium includes seven species, which are indigenous to Brazil and to neighboring areas of South America and Central America. They grow in open areas of the forest and on the banks of rivers and go dormant during the dry season. The wild plants grow to 15–35 inches (40–90 cm) tall, with leaves mostly 6-18 inches (15–45 cm) long and broad.

Metal Flower

Metal Flower

I made this metal flower thing way back in the mists of history (1991 maybe?) at art classes run by the Art Gallery of WA (grandly titled the "Gallery Art School" or "GAS" for short).

The classes were run in three month terms, and each term a local artist would be brought in to teach the kids how to work in various styles or media.

The term that produced this piece was all about metal and glass work, and was some of the most fun I've ever had in my life - involving as it did blowtorches, soldering irons, large sheets of glass, hunks of metal, oxy-acetalene torches and all manner of sharp and dangerous implements.

I haven't worked with glass or metal since, but I'd sure like to.

Floral skirt

Floral skirt

At last I finished my skirt for the January 07 sewalong :-). There are two layers; a beautiful sheer floral and a white polycotton with woven pattern, both see-through on their own but wonderful together. Originally I sewed this fabric up in design 9 but it was just not my style! So I unpicked it and had a go at design10.

Modifications
The lining is a bit shorter than the design as I was restricted by the amount of white fabric I had left! I was going to add some length with lace but I think it looks great the way it is.
On advice I made the underlap much more generous and actually cut it the width of the skirt front and then hemmed the side about 4cm. No chance of flashing with this skirt!

I'm sure I'll make some more of these it feels really nice on. This skirt is very similar to the one in the winter 2002 issue which I love except for my unfortunate habit of constantly splitting the front split!! The overlapping style will definitely solve that problem :-).
