Plowing the Field

Plowing the Field

Until I saw this photo, it had never occurred to me that there could be such a thing as a foot-operated plow.

Despite the farmer's winning smile, I imagine this form of plowing must have been difficult and tiring.

I wonder whether this plow was used to supplement work done by oxen pulling plows, or whether it was limited to farmers who were too poor to afford an ox to plow their fields.

This photo is from an album Elstner Hilton compiled in Japan between 1914 and 1918. Elstner was my spouse's uncle.

While Uncle Elstner sometimes annotated photos that required an explanation, he never dated the pictures. So all we know is they were taken between January, 1914 and December, 1918.
The plow in this photo looks like it hasn't seen much use.

    check valve
  • A check valve, clack valve, non-return valve or one-way valve is a mechanical device, a valve, which normally allows fluid (liquid or gas) to flow through it in only one direction.

  • A valve which will allow water to pass in one direction but will close and prevent flow (backflow) in the opposite direction.

  • A valve that closes to prevent backward flow of liquid

  • Limits the flow of gas to one direction only. Use a check valve between the bubbler and generator to prevent unwanted pressure build up in the generator, and a safety against a low level bubbler. A check valve, such as used on torches, is recommended.

Emily Dickinson

(calligraphy is from Dickinson's The Soul selects Her Own Society, My LifeClosed Twice Before Its Close and Presentiment)

Emily Dickinson

The soul selects her own society,

Then shuts the door;

On her divine majority

Obtrude no more.

Unmoved, she notes the chariot's passing

At her low gate;

Unmoved, an emperor kneeling

Upon her mat.

I've known her from an ample nation

Choose one;

Then close the valves of her attention

Like stone.

I never saw a Moor

My life closed twice before its close;

It yet remains to see

If immortality unveil

A third event to me,

So huge, so hopeless to conceive,

As these that twice befell.

Parting is all we know of heaven,

And all we need of hell.

Presentiment---is that long shadow---on the lawn---

Indicative that sun goes down---

The notice to the startled grass

That darkness---is about to pass---

J Blakeborough & Sons Ltd - clock controlled gate valve (1920's)

J Blakeborough & Sons Ltd - clock controlled gate valve (1920's)

An unusual water valve arrangement incorporating a clock-controlled unit that opened or cut the water flow at predetermined times. This type of automatic valve was made by J Blakeborough & Sons Ltd during the 1920’s / 1930’s and designed to be placed at remote locations where a supply of water is needed for a number of hours each day. This valve was set to automatically open at 6am and close at 6pm and it was only necessary for someone to visit once a fortnight to rewind the clock.

The opening/closing mechanism was hydraulically operated whereby at the set time mains water would be admitted to the pistons to open or close the valve’s gate. This particular valve was designed by engineer E. W Dixon of Leeds and supplied to the Pateley Bridge R.D.C. in North Yorkshire.

Thank you for reading.

1926 New Hudson 596cc Super Vitesse - National Motorcycle Museum

New Hudson Motorcycles was a British motorcycle manufacturer. Founded in 1903 by George Patterson in Birmingham, their first motorcycle was produced in 1902 but was unsuccessful. The New Hudson range expanded between 1910 and 1915 using JAP engines, then the factory joined the war effort until 1919. As well as Side Valve and OHV single cylinder engines of 350 to 600cc, they also built a 211cc two-stroke and a number of three-wheelers with MAG engines. In 1927 Bert Le Vack broke the 100 mph record at Brooklands on a 500cc New Hudson.

The firm stopped motorcycle production in 1932 and changed their name to Girling Ltd - which still exists as a brake component company. Bikes were made under the New Hudson name after World War II when they became a subsidiary of Birmingham Small Arms Company (BSA) and manufactured successful autocycles until 1957. Their premises in Birmingham still exist too, although are now the home of Swan Brand electric kettles.

    check valves
  • (Check valve) A device inserted into a moving liquid stream that allows flow of the stream in only one direction; most often used on the inlet and outlet sides of an HPLC pump.

  • A valve that closes to prevent backward flow of liquid

  • (Check valve) A check valve, clack valve, non-return valve or one-way valve is a mechanical device, a valve, which normally allows fluid (liquid or gas) to flow through it in only one direction.

  • (Check valve) used to provide flow through a pipe in one direction only. When installed between an external filter and the pond, it keeps the dirty water in the filter from flowing back into the pond if power is lost. They are also used to keep an external pump primed if power is lost.

That doesn't look right

That doesn't look right

The beginning of the story
starts here. The rubber sleeves
enclose the joint between
the check valve and the pvc pipe.

The check valve keeps waste water
from flowing back down the pipe
and into the pump.

My guess is the sleeve on top
is probably the original one, dating
back to when the house was built
in 1997.

Over time the rubber ages and bulges
and becomes less than water tight.
When you put the joint under a load
like when you run a newer model
washing machine, you get a lot of water
where you don't want it.

(Photo taken while crossing the Snake River on my drive home from work)

Written October 9th. 2007

The drive home from work this evening was as typical as any other. There was nothing significant about the route I took or the people I shared the pavement with. There was neither an over abundance of red lights or green lights, and most of the tree limbs that had been ripped from the tree tops during Saturdays freak snow storm had now been cleared away. It was a typical drive home, and yet there was something about it that was different. Despite an overwhelming sense of exhaustion in both mind and body, my senses were active, and my mind wondered in ah at the world around me. Everything seemed brighter for some reason, almost amplified in away, and I soaked in the details as best I could without losing track of the road ahead of me. By the time I’d reached city limits I’d counted no less then four attempts to flip on the radio, before reluctantly reminding myself “Oh, that’s right. I don’t have one anymore.” For some reason it just didn’t bother me, and I allowed a grin to cross my face as I thought to myself “Well. Don‘t have to worry about that anymore”.

It’s been a curious week so far, and I’ve been faced with some curious situations. Perhaps I merely needed a moment to put things into perspective. Perhaps I’d found my moment on the drive home.

I had found nothing significant about Monday morning. The alarm had sounded at it’s standard time, I’d thrown the coffee on like clock work, and gotten my yaw yaw’s out waking up to Pink’s reruns and music videos on VH1. Equally the drive into work had been undistinguished, and even the news that the boss would be out for a spell again had not been an overly monopolizing issue. I’d been in a typical mood, on a typical Monday morning, and typically pulled the first trucks in a few minutes early and started in on them by myself, while the rest of the crew stumbled in half awake. It seemed normal. I even allowed myself the pleasure of mind wondering, as I fired up “Thelma” and pretended I was Kermit the frog, along side Ms. Piggy in the pilot episode of “Pigs in space, the red neck series”. Then Thelma coughed, and the colors began to change. It was almost as though that estranged machine set the stage for the rest of the week. It was the way she’d sounded that drew my attention. Or rather the way she didn’t sound. When the side brushes engaged, I didn’t hear the familiar sound of air being feed into the rams. A closer observation confirmed my concern. The side brushes were not extending, Thelma had no air.

A moment of ponderous thought, and a recall of the weekend power outages, again a result of Saturdays freak snow storm, and I bid Ms. Piggy a fond far well as I returned to the land of Static, mild mannered truck wash foremen. It didn’t take long before an idea manifested itself, and I headed for the north back room and the air compressor with a steady pace, while the rest of the crew lethargically assembled in the bays. “HI HO Static, away!“ A quick inspection of the air compressor, and then a look inside the breaker box, and the problem is solved. A simple flip of my finger reconnects the electrical circuit, and the air compressor rumbles to life. Problem solved and on to the next task. It’s not the task I was expecting.

By the time I’ve rounded the entry to bay two I can already hear the woo fully familiar machine gun like rattle coming from the south back room. I pick my pace up into a run, and scramble into the bay screaming “Shut it down, shut it down, it’s sucking air.” The air compressor isn’t the only thing the power knocked out, our water well apparently isn’t working either.

An inspection of well house one, six phone calls, and fifteen minutes later, and I’m finally standing over the valve that junctions our well house with the truck stop’s well house, and I have a six foot long valve key in my hand that looks kind of like Conan the barbarians battle axe, and a Norman Baits looking grin on my face. The wash runs off of three phase power. Lose all three legs and you get a black out. Lost just one or two legs and you’ve got a brown out. Black out’s shut things down. It’s annoying at best, but eventually everything comes back on. Brown out’s have a habit of destroy things. Saturday the wash lost power, but not all of it. A brown out, and with no one around to care for the situation it has fried several components in our well house, leaving me little other option then to slave well house two to our building. I open the valve and offer the world a chuckle. “Bring it on.” It’s another problem solved, and I wave the valve key clumsily around over my head like a Tusken raider out of Star Wars. Fifteen minutes later and we’ve finally finished the first truck of the day and roll on one. I’d figured at that point, that must be the weeks hiccup.

In hind sight, I don’t think there are going to be any hiccup’s at all this week. I’m beginning to wonder if per

Another View of the Cylinder Setup.

Another View of the Cylinder Setup.

A few days ago I decided we were past any more hard freezes so it was time to hook up the windmill. The lines to and from the windmill are less than a foot deep and the cylinder is completely exposed, so I need to drain the whole system each winter. I do this using two valves, one by the foot valve in the pond and the other one at the bottom of the upper line going up to the tank. I take all of the leathers out of the cylinder in the fall and keep them in a container of water to keep them from drying out, and then I can use them the next year. If they dry out, they are no longer any good. Years ago my brother found some 3 inch stainless steel pipe that we use as a cylinder using both ends of an old cylinder that had the threads rusted and striped out. This is all held together using three threaded rods going through some rings on each end of the cylinder assembly. It does make it easier to get into the cylinder this way.
When I have it all together I prim the whole setup using the fill pipe and valve coming off of the pipe under the cylinder extending up over the cylinder with a valve to cut off the air from entering below the cylinder, yet letting me add water by opening it.

The modern Aston Martin DBS is a high performance GT sports car from the UK manufacturer Aston Martin. Aston has used the DBS name once before on their 1967-72 grand tourer coupe. The modern car replaces the 2004 Vanquish S as the flagship of the marque.

It was officially unveiled at the 2007 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance on 2007-08-16, which featured a brand new exterior colour, a graphite grey with a blue tint which has been dubbed 'Casino Ice'. Delivery began on 2008 Q1.

The car is built in Gaydon, Warwickshire. Its engine is built at the Aston Martin engine plant in Cologne, Germany.

Overview specifications;
Aston Martin DBS V12 pictured in LondonEngine: 6.0 Litre 48-valve V12
Transmission: 6-Speed Manual (optional 6-Speed Automatic)
Drivetrain: RWD (Rear Wheel Drive)
Curb Weight: 1,695 kg (3,740 lb)
City Fuel Economy: 12 mpg-US (20 L/100 km; 14 mpg-imp)
Highway Fuel Economy: 18 mpg-US (13 L/100 km; 22 mpg-imp)
Horsepower: 510 hp (380 kW; 517 PS) at 6500 rpm
Torque: 420 lb·ft (569 N·m) at 5750 rpm
Wheelbase: 107.9 in (2,741 mm)
Length: 185.9 in (4,722 mm)
Width: 75.0 in (1,905 mm)
Height: 50.4 in (1,280 mm)

The DBS is equipped with 5935 cc V12 engine with four valves per cylinder. The same engine is also used in the DBR9 and DBRS9 racing cars albeit with extensive modifications. The engine of the DBS produces 510 horsepower (380 kW) at 6500 rpm and 570 N·m (420 lb·ft) of torque @ 5750 rpm. The engine also includes an active bypass valve which above 5500 rpm opens and lets more air into the engine resulting in increased performance. Compression ratio is 10.9:1 which combined with the above propels the car from 0-62 mph in 4.3 seconds all the way up to 191 mph (307 km/h). In 2007, the British motoring show Top Gear sent the DBS around their famous test track and recorded a lap time of 1:23.9, a second faster than the comparable Bentley Continental Supersports.

As with the DB9, Aston Martin uses the same VH(vertical horizontal) structure which provides strength and rigidity to the whole car. Thanks to the structure, 85% of the weight of the car is kept between the wheelbase which results in increased handling, responsiveness and feel during tight cornering.

Aston Martin has also developed an Adaptive Damping System or ADS which alters the suspension in order for the car to cope with the driver's desires and road/weather conditions. When turned on, the ADS automatically alters the suspension settings to ensure the driver has high levels of control at all times. Apart from the suspension getting stiffer, throttle and braking response is increased and also steering is sharpened.

The DBS is fitted with Pirelli P-Zero tyres which have been developed especially for the car, along with lightweight, aluminum 20" wheels.

To keep the weight as low as possible, Aston Martin has made extensive use of carbon fiber throughout the whole car. The bonnet, the boot, the front wings and the door opening surrounds are all made by carbon fiber. The carpets are also made by special thin layers from carbon fiber. The roof and the doors are made by aluminum. The result of all that is a 30 kg (66 lb) weight reduction from a regular DB9. The car is also fitted with a carbon fiber splitter at the front wings to increase handling and a carbon fiber rear diffuser to increase high speed stability.

The brake discs are carbon ceramic, which shaves a significant 12.5 kg (28 lb) from the unsprung weight. In the front, there are 398 mm (15.7 in) ventilated and drilled brakes with 6-piston alloy monobloc calipers. In the back, there are 360 mm (14.2 in) ventilated and drilled brakes with 4-piston alloy monobloc calipers.

The interior of a DBS is a blend of carbon fiber, alcantara leather, stainless steel and aluminum surfaces. The seats are made from semi aniline and alcantara leather and both bear the DBS signature. The door panels are carbon fiber and the facia trim is as a standard, matrix alloy and iridium silver center console or as an optional extra piano black facia trim and center console. The key to start the car is the "Emotion Control Unit" which at start was specially developed for the DBS but from 2008 is available for the DB9 and V8 Vantage as well. The key is made from stainless steel and glass and is inserted to a special hole in the dashboard.

Bang & Olufsen has developed a 1000-Watt sound system for the DBS which consists of 13 speakers located in 10 different locations throughout the cabin.
