CESSNA GEAR PUMP : CESSNA GEAR

Cessna gear pump : Sump pump for sale.

Cessna Gear Pump

cessna gear pump

    gear pump
  • A small pump consisting of a casing enclosing a driven gear wheel in mesh with a second gear wheel, the fluid being carried from the suction to the delivery side of the pump in the spaces between the teeth.

  • A gear pump uses the meshing of gears to pump fluid by displacement. They are one of the most common types of pumps for hydraulic fluid power applications. Gear pumps are also widely used in chemical installations to pump fluid with a certain viscosity.

  • Gear Pumps are used for some engine oil pumps and hydraulic pumps. The concept involves generating oil flow by two gears meshing together in a relatively tight enclosure. The size of the gears and the tightness of the enclosure will determine what the pump is capable of generating.

My 11 foot wide grass runway

My 11 foot wide grass runway

The grass strip on my farm is about 11 feet wide and just wide enough to accommodate the landing gear. I have a couple of feet to play with, but on a day when I have a strong cross-wind, it requires a little more concentration. I shortened the runway and made it much more narrow to discourage other pilots from practicing touch-and-go-landings. I don't want the liability if they run into a goat, or a hole in the ground or my house. From the air, my grass runway doesn't look too inviting. A friend of mine had a grass runway on his ranch and it wasn't uncommon for strangers to do touch and goes. On one occasion someone landed at his ranch while he was gone and he found a note on his gas pump stating "I needed some airplane gas" and they left $20 but they took about $50 worth of gas....

I only need 350 feet for landing and about 400 for take-off, which is something most airplanes can't do unless they are a modified STOL aircraft such as my tiny Cessna, having 50 more horsepower than when it left the factory and some other goodies.

257 Lhasa train, at the platform

257 Lhasa train, at the platform

This is the Beijing West station. China is now in the seventh year of its "Go West" (!) campaign, which incentivises industrial development and population relocation to the PRC's western regions. These regions are still relatively poor, rural, and sparsely populated, compared to the Chinese coastal cities, and they are mineral- and resource-rich ....
The train lining connecting Golmud (and thus Beijing) to Lhasa is the most expensive component in this strategy. It was opened in July 2006, three years ahead of schedule. Building it was an enormous engineering challenge--the Swiss engineers brought in to advise on the project said that it could not actually be done. The train has to go as high as 5,072m to cross the Kunlun mountains, and it's built on a layer of ice that melts and re-freezes seasonally. The Chinese have pumped cooling agents into the ground around the pillars and tunnels to keep it frozen, but there have already been problems with tracks shifting and twisting. Global warming is not going to do it any favours either. And there was an 8.1 Richter earthquake on the Qinghai plateau just a few years ago...
The total journey takes 48 hours. You leave Beijing in the evening, go to sleep, spend a day on the train, go to sleep, spend another day on the train, and arrive in Lhasa on the evening of the second day, tired, dirty, claustrophobic, and having disastrously underestimated the amount of reading material you need.

Drain Tile

Drain Tile

The way things turned out we won't need mechanical sump pumps. We had enough of an elevation drop from the base of the footings to the bottom of the lot that the water should drain due to a little thing called "gravity."

Granted, the drop is not significant -- a little more than an inch in the from the foundation to the outlet. The soil only covers the pipe by a couple of inches along that run from the north side of the steps to the exit point you see here. When we start landscaping, how do we handle that? Do nothing? Create a visual line that also acts as a loose identifier? TBD to be sure.

Now this is offered up as a target for his cutting humour. But whatever happens I still reckon my pile is bigger than his pile ... :-)

For clarification, I should explain I spotted these at a local woodyard in Essex, England.

Marr's Spring 2011-0219D0001

Marr's Spring 2011-0219D0001

Marr’s Spring

Part of Marr’s Field, on farmland owned by William Marr, this spring was a major factor in the selection of this site for the University of Alabama campus in 1827. From its opening in 1831 well into the 20th century, the institution relied upon Marr’s Spring as its principal water source. Water flowing from hillside crevices was collected in these brick cisterns and hauled in buckets to the rooms of students and throughout the campus. A dam for a swimming pond and bathhouse was constructed, supported by the spring and cisterns. By the mid-1880s, as the cisterns began to deteriorate, the University considered repairs until deciding, as the 1889 trustees’ minutes recorded, “it has always been considered doubtful whether the plunging and swimming in the very cold water so directly from the spring is conducive to health.” A 1955 survey found that Marr’s Spring yielded 100 gallons of good, clear odorless water per minute. The cisterns were renovated in 2010 in an effort to restore the original beauty of this University of Alabama historical landmark.

Prestonfield Bronze by Thomas Whalen

Prestonfield Bronze by Thomas Whalen

Bronze of Mother and Child, Prestonfield Primary School, Edinburgh

Thomas Whalen (1903-1975)
Tom Whalen (1903-1975) was born in Leith, Edinburgh and, after serving as a shipwright from 1914-18, he attended Edinburgh College of Art. In 1932 a scholarship enabled him to travel in Europe with fellow sculptor, Hew Lorimer, where they were particularly impressed by the sculpture in French Romanesque churches and cathedrals. Throughout his career, Whalen worked on both large-scale commissions (such as his Mother and Child at Prestonfield Primary School in Edinburgh) and small, individual pieces.

An unemployed ship's carpenter from Leith by the name of Tom Whalen (1903-1975) wandered into one of Alexander Carrick's evening classes at Edinburgh College of Art after having spent years whittling away on bits of scrap wood.

It was Alexander Carrick who recognised and nurtured an outstanding talent, becoming Whalen's guide and mentor, giving him studio space and nominating him for commissions whenever the opportunity arose.

From 1928 – 31 Whalen trained with wood-carver Thomas Good and with the Head of Sculpture – Alexander Carrick. Whalen was the first holder of the Andrew Grant Fellowship, during which he created a life-size Mother and Child in bronze as the centrepiece of a fountain-group at Prestonfield Primary School, Edinburgh. He was awarded the Royal Scottish Academy Travelling Scholarship and travelled to France and Italy with fellow student Hew Lorimer. He had his first solo-exhibition at the Colling Gallery, London in 1932.

During the 1930s his carvings in wood and stone were influenced by Mestrovic, Gill, Milles and by mediaeval sculpture; his bronzes were influenced by contemporary French sculpture. Whalen executed a large body of work for the 1938 Empire Exhibition in Glasgow including reliefs for the ICI Pavilion and the Garden Club; monumental figures for the Scottish Pavilion (North) and bronzes for the Palace of Art quadrangle.

His work over the next two decades was dominated by carved relief work for churches, public buildings and power stations but he also fulfilled private commissions for carved figures in wood, alabaster and stone. In 1951 he modelled monumental reliefs on the theme of ‘Coal’ for Basil Spence’s Festival of Britain Pavilion of Industry at Kelvingrove, Glasgow.

His broad, semi –abstract figures of women and clowns, and his experiments with glass were specific to him. He was a Fellow of Edinburgh College of Art, a member of the SSA and GI and was elected to the Royal Scottish Academy in 1954.
