Stoned... Poor Finnegan had to go in for dental surgery today, and now he's home. He is pretty doped up and sleeping on the couch sandwiched between 2 big pillows so he doesn't roll off in his drunken stooper... A couple of weeks ago I noticed some blood where he was laying his head, and was horrified to find his back molars were bleeding?! At only 3 years old you don't expect problems with tartar etc... but Finn has had teeth problems since he was a wee pup. So today he had to be sedated while the vet cleaned his teeth. Now we have to start brushing them everyday. (I have never brushed any of my dogs teeth so this will be a challenge) but the vet said I'll have to or the same thing will happen again. Because of his allergies it's not as simple as giving him a rawhide, dentastick or bone. Poor guy... We're just glad he's OK. I'm sure by tomorrow he'll be back to his silly self... Btw, his teeth are pearly white;) canine teeth my dogs teeth up close , she is 9 years old. a clean tub and tiles, and how they got that way these tiles hadn't been cleaned in forever, so i sprayed them down with my all-purpose spray on the tiles and let it sit for a couple of hours (it helps if the tiles are already wet). the spray is borax, white distilled vinegar, hot purified water, and dr. bronner's liquid castile soap (it's made with all organic oils; i like almond best). the recipe comes from clean house, clean planet. i then get in the cracks with the brush pictured here--it's flexible and the most ergonomic, from what i can tell abt what's on the market, supplemented by an old toothbrush. i use the same brush on the tub and the sink, with the gunk you see in the kombucha bottle on the tub here. that's made with baking soda (which i scent with essential oils, whichever ones i feel like), dr. bronner's liquid soap, and vinegar. recipe from the same aforementioned book. i like using the kombucha bottle because, well, i drink a lot of kombucha, it's refillable, and it comes out of the bottle easily. ok, i did break one once when it fell in a tub. by the way, i use a separate set of rubber gloves for the kitchen and bathroom. The City of Boroondara has found an environmentally sustainable solution for the works at local heritage icon, the Kew Police Station and Court House. Council used an organic based paint stripping alternative as part of the repairs to the rendering on the building facade. Over nearly three months, the damaged and unsound render was removed, the paint was stripped and the render was repainted. Usually, paint is removed via high pressure water cleaning or sandblasting. This is a harsh method and involves combining extreme high amounts of pressure, water and sand and is highly toxic. It also creates high noise levels. In this 'green' project, Council used a soy bean paint stripper. The process uses a paste-like substance, which is highly effective, non toxic and biodegradable, and applied by hand. Initially, a bandage is applied (much like a leg waxing strip) over the top of paste. It is allowed to dry and then the bandage is stripped off. Noise was kept to a minimum by using the paint stripping alternative. Scrapings and bandages are then bagged and sent to the tip as landfill, so it does not end up in our water supply. The waste and debris don’t run-off into drains, and the bags and bi-products are biodegradable. Studley Ward Councillor Phillip Healey explained that soy bean paint removal is not greatly used in Melbourne or the local government sector. "We know of special cases where it has been used, such as high profile projects like Sydney Harbour Bridge, but Boroondara is one of the first in Victoria to employ this natural plant-based paint-stripping treatment to a large-scale building," Cr Healey said. "What this means is that no harmful substances were used and no injury was caused, soy paint removal also preserves, protects and restores the heritage integrity and decorative stone masonry features of the historic building. "This is a terrific example of our commitment to 'enhancing the environment' which is one of our key directions in the 2010–15 Council Plan." The restoration of the Kew Court House and Police Station is expected to be completed in the year ahead. Council purchased the heritage building in 2007 with the intention for it to be restored and used for the community. The building required extensive renovation including repair of the slate roof and ventilation dome, and the renovation plans include a new foyer, bathrooms and kitchen to ensure the venue meets a broad range of community needs. Heritage Victoria helped fund the cost of the roof repairs with a grant of $250,000, along with the Australian Government contributing $330,000 through its Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program. Restoration Underway Concept plans for a new performance and exhibition space at the Kew Court House and Police Station have been developed by the City of Boroondara. Two years ago, Council Purchased the Kew Court House and Police Station from the State Government for $825,000 with the intention for it to be restored and used for the community. The building requires extensive renovation including repair of the slate roof and ventilation dome. The renovation plans include a new foyer, bathrooms and kitchen to ensure the venue meets a broad range of community needs. The restoration has been assisted with a Federal Government grant of $330,000 under the Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program. In 2008, Council was also successful in obtaining a Heritage Victoria Grant of $250,000 towards the costs of the roof repairs. Having satisfied the necessary permit requirements, works are about to commence using slate of a similar quality to the original. Fishing for light It never fails to amaze me how a seemingly minor event can change the outcome of one's best laid plans and expectations so dramatically. The second night after arriving in Cornwall I took Jay and myself over to the cliffs and lighthouse at Godrevy in the hope of capturing my first sunset. It was only when I came to use my filters that I found out that although I had my filters with me I'd left my filter holder and adaptor rings at home...dohhhhhhhhhhhh! After 5 mins of dark mutterings and fighting the desire to throw myself into the crashing waves, which seemed to be giggling in a mocking way as they hissed across the rocks, I adapted and tried to make best use of the light without filters. That's not to say I gave up easily, I did try holding the filters in front of the lens, which is ok when you're doing short exposures but a real arm burner when doing LE's. Unfortunately, tho, and of great relief to my arm muscles, it's impossible to hold the filter steady enough and, most importantly, perpendicular to the film/sensor plane resulting in soft focus/blur because of the light being refracted at an angle through the wobbly filter...a couple of shots were acceptable as far as sharpness was concerned but not as far as the comp was. Bugger! As it turned out my act of forgetfulness meant that photography took a back seat during the holiday allowing Jay and myself to just enjoy ourselves and the beautiful landscape we were in. I still carried my camera gear with me wherever I went but I concentrated more on people and the mini-me landscapes. At times tho, I was beside myself with frustration and recrimination when I saw stunning vistas and scenes that I couldn't shoot without the use of grads and ND's...grrr, arrgghh! As I said, tho, with photography taking a back seat, and with the weather this time around being brilliant unlike in June, Jay and I were able to do more things than we otherwise would have done, 2 days of bodyboarding being one of them (sheer child-like fun and joy!), going for long, ambling coastal walks being another (sheer ooohhhing and ahhhing!), and coming home with a list as long as my arm of future locations. So, sometimes a holiday should just be a holiday and not a photographic expedition as I so often make them into, it was wonderful for once to become involved within the landscape, to relax into the surroundings, to be the passionate subject rather than the cool observer, to no longer be aloof like some Canon Terminator with its all-seeing red eyes weighing up everything it sees for it's potential threat value...erm, potential use in compositions! Jay said to me recently that one of the things about photography she's discovered and enjoys with a passion is just how much more aware she is of what's going on around her, how much more there is to see in the world that she didn't notice before without a camera and a photographer's eye....welcome to the wonderful world of photography, Jay, just don't forget your filter kit like I did, eh! As usual after a holiday, I'll be doing my utmost to catch up with all your amazing images asap, I hope you're well, happy and making real your vision of life. I would just like to add a huge thank you to the many photographers I met in Cornwall, some flickrites, others not, who had tales to tell, sound advice to give, laughs to share and were just all round damn fine people! Croquembouche 1 to 2 days ahead: Make creampuffs and freeze. Make foil cone (centre base for pyramid). 2 days to 2 hours ahead: Make crčme patissičre. Same day (2-4 hours before serving): Assemble croquembouche: 1) Fill cream puffs with crčme patissičre 2) Prepare melted sugar (2 sauce pans) 3) Dip cream puffs in melted sugar (caramel) 4) Assemble cream puffs around foil cone 5) Spin remaining cooked sugar over croquembouche Tips: Always work with a bowl of cold water and a cold wet cloth to wipe sugar drips. In the event that you do touch the hot sugar, immediately dip your hands in the cold water. Do not rub them. After pastry is complete, sugar coated pots can be easily cleaned by first filling them with water and then placing on a medium high burner. Allow water to boil out the candied sugar. An alternative way to proceed with this dessert is to fill the puffs with vanilla ice cream pouring warm chocolate sundae sauce over the puffs (this also acts as the "glue"). Basic cream puff dough or 'choux' pastry: This recipe makes about 1 pound of choux pastry (3-4 dozen puffs). If you are a novice, you might consider making one batch just to practice on. Make some puffs using a #4 tip and some using a #5 plain pastry tip. Larger puffs form the base of the pastry. The smaller ones are used towards the top to achieve the conical effect. 1 cup water 1/2 cup unsalted butter or shortening 1 cup all-purpose flour 1/4 tsp. salt 1 tsp. sugar 4 large eggs Preheat oven to 425 F. Lightly grease two cookie sheets or line with cooking parchment. In a medium saucepan, combine water and butter and heat over medium heat to melt butter. Once it is melted, bring water to a full boil and immediately stir in salt, sugar, and flour. Stir with a wooden spoon until all the flour is blended and leaves the sides of the pot in a round mass. Shuffle the pot briefly on the burner to dry out the dough. Remove from heat and place dough in a large bowl (if mixing by hand) or in the mixing bowl of an electric mixer. Let cool about 10 minutes. Then, with mixer running, add the eggs one at a time, blending well after each addition. Mixture should look smooth and glossy after the last egg is blended in. Spoon the pâte a choux into a pastry bag fitted with a plain tip. Pipe out mounds of dough, about 3/4 inch in diameter. Use a blunt knife dipped in water to separate dough from tip. Bake until golden brown, about 22-25 minutes. Remove from oven and slit each creampuff slightly on one side. Replace cookie sheets in oven to dry inside of pastries. Remove from oven and let cool in a draft-free place. Proceed with recipe or freeze for later use. Makes 3-4 dozen small puffs. Crčme patissičre: This classic French custard can be flavored with vanilla, rum, or kirsch. It can be made up to two days ahead or one hour before needed. 1/2 cup sugar 6 egg yolks 1/4 cup flour pinch salt 2 cups milk 1 tsp. vanilla Mix half the sugar, egg yolks, flour, salt, and 1/2 cup of the milk in a small bowl and mix well to blend. In a medium saucepan, heat the rest of the milk and sugar together. As it comes to a boil, whisk in the egg yolk mixture. Let the mixture resume boiling, blending well with a whisk to make sure bottom does not burn. As mixture thickens, remove from heat. Let stand 2-3 minutes, then stir in vanilla.
