- a window in a car

Window Reflection
My best intentions of returning to a regular posting schedule have been overturned by another busy week, but next week should see the completion of two big projects and a return to more free photo time.
Thought I'd at least upload a cameraphone snap so you'd all know I'm still here. I grabbed this at the gas station the other day, the car was shaded but the windows reflected a sunny morning. I liked the contrast.

After nearly a year from when I started this bed in the end I managed to finish it...I started from a normal bed and I finally obtained a canopy bed--hahahhaa...I have changed many times the ideas but I am satisfied with the final result...
My babies and my husband gave me the compliments..thanks my lovers...i'm so happy !!!

Police Cordon In Place
Protesters holding a banner reading "Edelman PR spinning climate out of control" on top of an awning in front of the Southside office block on Victoria Street this morning. Edelman PR represent e.on, which (in addition to its much publicised wind farm plans) wants to build a coal-fired power station.
This is the view of the protest from my office window.
Update: 11:14 - They're still there. There are now four police cars, two police vans, two ambulances, one unmarked police car, a fire engine and a fire service car parked along Victoria Street. Impressive.
Update: 12:07 The protest continues. Most of the vehicles are gone. There are still half a dozen policemen standing around the cordon, and now there are four protesters on the ground outside the cordon wearing boiler suits and masks carrying signs reading "e.on f.off"
Update: 12:15 Show's over - the protesters have climbed down from the awning via a ladder, and taken round the corner by the police. The four men in boiler suits are standing outside the building.

The RV undergoes periods of expansion and retraction.
When we're in camping mode, stuff comes out of the cabinets, gets moved around, and used. The bike and baby stroller come out of the car, computers emerge, stuff collects around the sink and dinette area, and baby toys appear out of nowhere. We, too, spill out onto the side of the RV. I've noticed it's custom when using an RV. Rolling down the awning is the equivalent of saying "I'm home." It's the first thing we do when arriving at a new spot - that and connecting to the hookups.
Just before setting out on the road, everything gets packed away and secured. We've now developed a checklist after a potentially disastrous 'uh-oh' situation when we left the doorstep out. Oops.

I stand corrected! Thanks to parasol, who provided the following information:
Cherry wood cannons were built as makeshift weapons by Bulgarian craftsmen who took part of the April Uprising of 1876. Cherry wood is pretty hard, but in many cases it was of course not hard enough to keep a cannon from bursting under the pressure of firing it... That's the material Bulgarians had available at hand for the uprising. The uprising was tragically unsuccessful, but Bulgaria gained its independence two years later. The Bulgarian cherry wood cannon tradition was copied and used also in Macedonia in the Ilinden Uprising, 1903.

Oxford Valance
This Oxford Valance was designed to frame the window but not block any of the beautiful country view. It is all one piece and wraps around the corners of the bump out to unify all four windows. The different height of the swags was added for interest and to mask the different heights of the windows. This is another example of what you can do with custom treatments...almost anything!

Pennine Pathfinder
We have a new folding camper (well, I say new ... it's a 2001 model)! Although we loved our old (1991) Conway Cruiser very much, we decided we'd go for a few more luxuries on tap - like an oven, a toilet and bigger bed with sprung mattress! Oh and we've got an awning now - huge improvement in living area...
Now we just need the decent weather to get back into the camping groove...

The Lighthouse was built in 1872 and towers 117 ft. above sea level. It guided mariners for 61 years and was retired in 1933 when it was replaced by the South Jetty light. It is now privately owned and not open to visitors. A lighthouse which may have been erected by the Republic of Texas was dismantled during the Civil War and plans for the present Bolivar light made after that time.
The Bolivar lighthouse is of brick sheathed in cast iron plates riveted together. It once glistened with a white-and-black banded exterior, but now is covered with rust and is almost a uniform black.
The 52,000 candle-power beacon guided ships through the channel, which in earlier years was undredged, safely from the Gulf of Mexico into the Port of Galveston.
The burner of the lamp was fed by kerosene, contained in storage tanks on the lower level, and the kerosene was forced through nozzles into a mantle where it became gas, burning with great intensity. Eight rays of light were produced every 15 seconds as the lamp slowly revolved throughout the night. Inside the lighthouse the brass finishings always were kept brilliantly polished, and it was considered one of the most attractive and efficient lighthouses on the Texas Gulf Coast.
From Mrs H. C. Claiborne, wife of the first lighthouse keeper: "Life at the lighthouse is very lonely and friendless. There is very little visiting because travel is non-existent from the point to Galveston. We pass most of our time by reading books."

The lighthouse withstood the onslaught of two of the worst storms recorded on the Texas Gulf Coast, the 1900 and the 1915 hurricanes.
An inspector's report said after the 1900 storm - which claimed an estimated 6000 lives on Galveston Island - that, "through the keeper's efforts, the lives of 125 people were saved, and to my personal knowledge, he harbored and fed a large number of them for a considerable period".
At one point during the storm, according to the story of one historian, the hurricane winds caused the tower to sway so badly that the machinery for the light failed to work, and that night Claiborne rotated the machinery by hand to keep the beacon bright.
Winds of 126 miles per hour were recorded in the 1915 hurricane, and still the lighthouse withstood the pounding of wind and wave.
The light in the tower burned every night during the years of it's service except two nights of that storm, Aug 17 and 18, when the supply of oil used to light the lamps floated away after the surging waters of an 11-foot tide burst open the door at the base of the tower.
Sixty-one people took refuge in the lighthouse during that storm, huddling on the iron steps during the night as winds rocked the tower, and peering out the windows during the daylight to see their homes and crops being destroyed.
Two houses, on stilts for protection from rising tides, were built near the lighthouse for the lighthouse keeper and his two assistants. H C Claiborne retired and was replaced by Capt J B Brooks in 1918.
The government sold the lighthouse as surplus property in 1947.The E W Boyt interests entered a private bid of $5,500 which was $500 higher that the only other bid.
On May 29,1933, after 61 years of service, the Bolivar lighthouse was officially retired. The inner mechanisms have been removed. The lamps and reflector lenses have been reassembled in the Galveston County Museum. In 1952, the land and buldings were sold to Pat E. Boyt. in 1968, the movie "My Sweet Charlie". starring Patty Duke and Al Freeman, Jr., was filmed at the lighthouse. No longer painted and maintained, the lighthouse has rusted to a uniform shade of black. It stands, near Highway 87, a visual delight and a symbol of the romance and adventure of long-ago times at sea.

SHUTTER RELEASE FOR NIKON D90 - CLIP ON LIGHT BULB SHADES
Shutter Release For Nikon D90
- The button on a camera that is pressed to make the shutter open
- The mechanism, usually a button on the top of the camera, that activates the shutter to expose the film.
- Typically refers to a wired remote control (also called a "bulb") that essentially behaves like a camera's shutter release button. The use of a shutter or cable release can reduce camera vibration over using the shutter button itself.
- The button you press to take the picture. Often half pressing the Shutter Release activates the autofocus, auto exposure and vibration reduction, and a full press is required to actually take the picture.
- The Nikon D90 is a 12.3 megapixel digital single-lens reflex camera model announced by Nikon on August 27, 2008. It is a prosumer model that replaces the Nikon D80, fitting between the company's entry-level and professional DSLR models. Nikon gives the D90's Estimated Selling Price in the U.S.
The Nikon "Nifty-Fifty" Locked @ f/22
A quick example of how the Nikon AF 50mm f/1.8 D should be set on a new Nikon dSLR. This is "Locked at f/22;" roll your mouse over the photo to see all of the notes. The photo above should answer just about everyone's question about this lens.
FYI: For those that have D40/x, D60, D80 & D90's etc. that use this lens on a "Auto" mode setting, the Maximum Aperture (Widest) that the camera will do is f/2.8! If you want to go wider than f/2.8 (f/2.0, f/1.8, f/1.4, etc.) than you NEED to be on the manual modes.

PS: For those of you thinking about getting the Nikon AF 50mm f/1.4 D prime lens,
most of the notes / instructions above are the same except you lock it @ f/16.
Edit 2/16/10: I decided to add some basic instructions because the comments are getting a bit long. :)
INSTRUCTIONS
Step 1: Make sure the camera is powered off.
Step 2: Mount the lens, it might require a bit more "Umph" if you aren't used to it.
Step 3: Rotate the Aperture ring until the #22 is below the White Dot / Line.
Step 4: Flip the locking tab so that the two dot's line up, just like in the photo above.
Step 5: Power on the camera and rotate the top dial until you select "A" meaning Aperture Priority or "M" meaning Full Manual Priority.
Please Note:
THE APERTURE IS CONTROLLED BY THE CAMERA BODY. YOU DO NOT ROTATE THE RING AS YOU WOULD ON A FILM CAMERA!!
Step 6: Look in the viewfinder and rotate the dial that controls the Aperture. For the users that only have one dial, (D40/x D60, D3000, D5000, etc.) move the rear dial until you see the Aperture number in the viewfinder lower. If you see f/8, f/11, f/16, move it in the other direction. ;)
For the folks who have two dials, use the one that controls the Aperture. (The default, I believe, is the front dial.) The numbers should go from 5.6...4.0...3.5...2.8...2.0...1.8, etc. (...or something along those lines.) This depends on how the Aperture values in the camera are set up. Typically it's either 1/3-stop or 1/2-stop increments; this setting will directly affect in what you see in the viewfinder as far as the Aperture Values are concerned.
Step 7: For folks who have a Auto Focus Motor in the body, choose the appropriate focus mode via the switch. (S - Single / C - Continuous / M - Manual). Happy Shooting! It will be interesting to hear the AF motor kick in for the first time, esp. if you primarily have AF-S lenses. :)
For those people who do not have a AF motor, D40/x, D60, D3000, D5000, etc., rotate the focus ring and look in the viewfinder. In the lower left corner, there should be a green dot. If you do not see a dot, keep turning the ring. If the dot blinks / flickers, your subject is almost in focus. If it is solid, your subject is in focus according to the camera's algorithms.
Hint: Sometimes I have moved my neck back and forth a little bit to aid in focusing. A blinking green dot will drive you nuts at first. ;)
Step 8: Final Thoughts...
Manually focusing takes a little practice. Manually focusing and dealing with a shallow depth of field is even more difficult. Expect to blow a lot of shots when first learning about f/1.8. F/2.8 is a lot more forgiving. Some portrait photographers that I know like using f/2.2, so you might want to start there.
Nikon has released the AF-S 35mm f/1.8G lens, which retails for about $199 online. I highly recommend getting one for the D40/x, D60, etc. crowd. It's not much more that the old AF 50mm f/1.8D lens, and it makes things really simple by autofocusing and having everything controlled via the camera body. I have also seen good stuff from the new AF-S 50mm f/1.4G lens. Esp. on the D700, that's where the AF-S 50 f/1.4G lens really shines. (Though the D700 seems to back-focus a lot with the 50mm f/1.4G. Try setting your AF Fine tune to -7 and see if it improves.)
One more thing...
I realize that when you first mount the lens and look at it through the glass, the aperture blades seem to disappear, which might throw some at first. Just in case if you were wondering, as the camera is about to take the photo, the aperture blades will go into their correct position just before the shutter is released.
Oh, and be sure to read through the comments below if you still have questions. Chances are someone has already asked and I've answered. it. ;)
