CAMERA LENS DIAGRAM - LENS DIAGRAM
Camera lens diagram - Dslr camera bundles.
Camera Lens Diagram
- A camera lens (also known as photographic lens, objective lens or photographic objective) is an optical lens or assembly of lenses used in conjunction with a camera body and mechanism to make images of objects either on photographic film or on other media capable of storing an image chemically
- a lens that focuses the image in a camera
- make a schematic or technical drawing of that shows interactions among variables or how something is constructed
- A simplified drawing showing the appearance, structure, or workings of something; a schematic representation
- a drawing intended to explain how something works; a drawing showing the relation between the parts

Focal Length
After not knowing what the focal length was, I drew this diagram to help me (and Dan) understand it.
A short focal length receives light from a wider angle, while a longer focal length is a narrower angle.
Now I assume that a short focal length with a small aperture, is the same as a long focal length with a large aperture, but the trade-off is amount of light captured and the area of the glass used.

Since 1992 or thereabouts, one bar in Elgin has been head-and-shoulders ahead of all others in terms of sheer conceptual lunacy. When it first opened, it was notable for a number of things:
- Cheap happy hour - 8:30 - 9:30
- A huge, Wheel Of Fortune-style wheel that would be spun towards the end of the aforementioned happy hour, giving punters the opportunity to extend happy hour from 5 minutes to an hour to ALL NIGHT
- Two pints for ?1.40
- The fact that the interior is a mockup of AN AMERICAN STREET, complete with barber shop, subway and washing lines
We used to love it when we were 17, but it's suffered a terminal decline since the heady days of 1992. Nowadays it's like every kind of shitty, ned-filled bar in every town in the land; like someone turfed the entire contents of Topman, Miss Selfridge and Lidl into one place and gave them aftershave to drink. Nevertheless, it retains a certain kind of scummy allure, one that ensures you'll go back again and again and again.
This shot is from the camera phone operated by a drunkard; drunk on one of the two kinds of draft lager they sell in there: the magnificent jakey juice that is Tennents.

I've been so busy I just haven't had time to use my film cameras and get film developed either through a commercial company or at home. So, I've been falling back on the digital cameras in my collection. In this case, I used a 1.3mp Polaroid DVF-130 camera to take the picture. Late August saw me back in Warsaw, Mo., tuning school and church pianos. This month I have added several new students to my private studio and have gotten that back up and running for the new season. Nancy's working three days a week at the local public library, and we both are very heavily involved in church activities, as usual. Combine that with the fact that I'm trying to get all of the windows on the house painted before winter sets in and I'm beginning to think I need to retire ... again. ;-)
Camera realization
With the sun near setting in this late day backlit scene, obtaining photos would not seem probable. The scene looked grey and dark.
The new digital camera compensated for the conditions and produced this very sharp image! The realization is that it would have never happened with my previous film cameras! Check the bridge detail, the locomotive number boards, and the 1914 bridge build date atop the right bridge.

HOW TO MAKE A PINHOLE CAMERA STEP BY STEP - HOW TO MAKE
How To Make A Pinhole Camera Step By Step - Nikon Underwater Camera Housings - High Resolution Pinhole Camera
How To Make A Pinhole Camera Step By Step
- A camera whose lens is covered except for a pin-sized hole. You have a very small aperture, so you have to shoot long exposures.
- A pinhole camera is a simple camera without a lens and with a single small aperture -- effectively a light-proof box with a small hole in one side. Light from a scene passes through this single point and projects an inverted image on the opposite side of the box.
- A camera with a pinhole aperture and no lens
- The most basic form of a camera in which no lens is used. A pinhole camera is made by making a lightight container and poking a pinhole in the front of the camera where a lens would go.
- A how-to or a how to is an informal, often short, description of how to accomplish some specific task. A how-to is usually meant to help non-experts, may leave out details that are only important to experts, and may also be greatly simplified from an overall discussion of the topic.
- Practical advice on a particular subject; that gives advice or instruction on a particular topic
- (How To’s) Multi-Speed Animations
- Providing detailed and practical advice
- The structure or composition of something
- give certain properties to something; "get someone mad"; "She made us look silly"; "He made a fool of himself at the meeting"; "Don't make this into a big deal"; "This invention will make you a millionaire"; "Make yourself clear"
- The manufacturer or trade name of a particular product
- The making of electrical contact
- engage in; "make love, not war"; "make an effort"; "do research"; "do nothing"; "make revolution"
- brand: a recognizable kind; "there's a new brand of hero in the movies now"; "what make of car is that?"
- Used as a polite or deferential way of asking someone to walk a short distance for a particular purpose
- Lift and set down one's foot or one foot after the other in order to walk somewhere or move to a new position
- shift or move by taking a step; "step back"
- Perform a dance
- measure: any maneuver made as part of progress toward a goal; "the situation called for strong measures"; "the police took steps to reduce crime"
- footstep: the distance covered by a step; "he stepped off ten paces from the old tree and began to dig"
a splash of garden
These water drops are refracting the images of a spiderwort plant (dark blue) , japanese iris (yellow) , and wild geranium (purple) from my garden.
I'm frequently asked if I use any special kind of solution to make the drops big or more colorful. Nope - just plain old H2O water.
I'm also asked if these photos are real or did I use photoshop to create images inside the drops. These photos are simply the product of physics. In this case I did place the flowers behind what I thought were some very interesting drops, so it is posed, (in fact I tried several things behind these drops) - but it IS real. And many of my favorite water drop shots are just what I find in my garden after a rain - so this stuff is all around us, just really small.
Following is tutorial I wrote about a year ago for how how to take this kind of macro photograph:
Water Drop Photography Tutorial
Or how to squeeze flowers into those teeny-weenie drops
I have always been drawn to nature and wildlife photography. I love taking my camera way up north to capture images of seldom-seen animals and exotic scenery. Unfortunately, we can’t always plan distant adventures to shoot photographs of moose and northern lights. But we can train our eyes to find the unexpected beauty in our own backyards.
My fascination (some might call it an obsession) with water drops began when I bought a Nikon D200 last summer. Sadly, the lens I wanted was out of stock. There was no way I was going to just look at my camera body while I waited, so I picked up a Nikkor 60mm macro. Through that lens I discovered worlds of complexity hidden within the simplest tiny drops of water.
I’m often asked if the images inside the water drops are real or the product of Photoshop. Let me assure you they are real, and anyone can find them if they know how to look. Simple physics produces these tiny, beautiful and common images. Water is cohesive, it naturally bonds together in the shape of a sphere, and in that shape it functions as a miniature lens that will refract nearby objects. Using that organic lens as seen through your technological lens, will allow you to explore those tiny, complex worlds.
The water drop photos on my stream have been the result of an evolutional process. My most viewed, most faved and most interesting photo (according to flickr) was taken almost by luck, lying flat on my belly using a Diet Coke can as tripod. But after a great deal of trial and error, I’ve come up with a few simple, consistent steps for more easily creating a water drop photograph.
1. Focus
2. Focus
3. Composition
4. Background
1. Focus: No, that's not a typo; focus is listed twice, and for a very good reason. It’s necessary to consider the focus of the water drop itself as well as the focus of the subject displayed within the drop. My initial concern is the water drop itself and the plant on which the drop is located. I like to set my camera to aperture priority to control the depth of field. The trick is to have enough depth of field so the drop and the plant (and maybe some nearby drops) are all in focus, while leaving the background sufficiently blurred so it doesn't compete for attention. I generally use f8 to f10 but I’ll sometimes stop down to f18 if the background does not need as much blur. I also find I get a sharper focus by backing away just a little and cropping the photo, rather than getting as close as possible in an attempt to get maximum magnification.
2. Focus: As seen in the example above, the water drop is in focus as is the image of the flower seen through the water drop, but the flower itself is not in focus. That effect is achieved not by adjusting the camera, but by relying on the water drop to act as a fixed focal lens. In other words, instead of adjusting the camera I adjust the object I want to appear within the water drop. I simply move it back or forward until I've found the clarity of focus I want. Some photos look better with blurred refractions. For the greatest clarity I've found the object should be 3-4 inches behind the water drop. This, of course, may vary if using a different macro lens. Be sure to experiment.
3. Composition: Obviously, the guidelines for good composition apply to water drop photographs. Attention should be given to the Rule of Thirds, to simplicity, to the geometry within the frame, and to all the usual elements of visual composition. It's important to remember, though, when photographing water drops that the very shape of the drop influences compositional decisions. Since the lens of the water drop is spherical (or nearly so), slight adjustments in the camera position…left, right, up, down…can have a radical effect on what is seen within the drop. Again, experiment.
4. Background: If you're working from nature, your control over the background is necessarily limited. You have to work with what you've got. As mentioned earlier, the unique qualities of the organic lens formed by a drop of water allows you to make mi
Sometimes the more I see, the less I recognize
I must admit to experiencing a moderate amount of dissatisfaction with my photography lately. It is not that I am not producing images I like, I am. In fact my success ration of frames shot versus those kept and used is higher than it ever has been. That is all good. Rather my dissatisfaction stems from noticing patterns developing in how and what and where I photograph.
I don't get out as much as I used to. Or rather I do, but just not to the same places. Specifically urban areas. Specifically Portland, the city I live. I am amused at times by how often I use my days off to get out of this city.
That bugs me just a tad. But it is ok, because it is only natural. I see it in a lot of other photographers I know, who think escape, artistic and otherwise, requires driving out to experience the natural world.
But then I wonder, "Wait, what exactly is the natural world? I mean, it's opposite is either unnatural or supernatural. Neither of those really describe cities and urban areas. Aren't humans themselves natural? And therefore all that we build is too." I know, it is definition, it is context. It is how we define words and meaning.
It is how we define ourselves.
Not to drift Orwellian. I just tend to fight that sort of thinking when I notice it sprouting up in myself. Anyway, I was talking about dissatisfaction. See, I used to love going downtown at night or on my Sundays off. Wandering all day long. Grabbing a bite to eat at a sidewalk cafe and just people watch (and photograph). This has been one aspect of my photography that has dipped a bit. Ok, a lot. One reason for this is because photography has become more of a social exercise for me, not a bad thing, but those photographers I tend to go out shooting with would rather hike a dusty trail in the Gorge than pound pavement in the city (also not a bad thing).
But even this is just scratching the surface. I guess much of my dissatisfaction comes from the fear that I am becoming more predictable, to myself. I know plenty out there will argue that my stream is varied and that is what they love. I mix it up, I am always forwarding new ideas, etc etc. I appreciate the sentiments folk, and don't be offended if I disagree, which I do.
There are a lot of things I like about Flickr. And I recommend this site to a lot of people during the course of the week, for a lot of good reasons. But I think one of the things I dislike about it the most is that it is almost too ... content. Too much of the communication, be it verbal or visual, that goes on here tends to be too content with how things are, with exploring what has already been discovered, as opposed to blazing new ground, to thinking of new ideas and concepts.
And that is the challenge I always try to face myself against. And yes, frankly, it is like trying to teach yourself to fly so you can race to the stars. In a sense, it is a goal you can never really achieve, but one you must always try to. Otherwise you're Earthbound.
I like taking cameras and trying to use them in all the ways they were never intended. I like taking the rules of photography, and proving them breakable. But more importantly, I like taking perceptions, mine especially, and constantly challenging them. Because that is how we grow. The more we push our boundaries, the larger an area they come to encompass.
And this is where I grow just a tad dissatisfied with myself. I think my photography is about as strong visually as it ever has been. But it is becoming, for me, too familiar. It is not about the quality of my images, it is more about the fact that I am just finding new ways to retrace the same old steps. In a certain sense, I am becoming formulaic. Maybe it is a complicated enough formula that I am following as to not be easily identifiable, but to me too often it still feels formulaic.
The difference is pretty slight, but I know it when I show up somewhere and I think "This would look great super wide with my pinhole" and I shoot it thus. Or I think, "Holga panoramic". My list is long, but it is still a finite list. It has been a while since I actually went out to attempt a photographic process that I was completely unsure of the possible results. It has been awhile since I felt like I was stumbling through a dark room looking for the light switch.
I miss those dark rooms, because finding that switch always reveals fascinating new areas to explore. And that is the difference. Sure these "rooms" I explore now still yield new finds. And if one hops around too much, always trying new things without ever really achieving sufficiency with any of them they have no depth. But the other extreme is to sacrifice breadth. And I want both. I think both is possible too. Or at least striving for them both I know beyond a doubt makes me better at what I do.
This whole line of thought began because I was noticing how easily a majority o

- Electronics, lens, and detector combinations that give the user an image, which can be viewed or recorded, of energy in the infrared spectrum.

- The making of electrical contact

Painting (or photographing really) a pretty picture
This is going to be a bit more abbreviated than I think I am going to want it, but that is mainly because I need to leave for work in about ten minutes, perhaps that forced brevity will be a good thing though. :-p
I was having a conversation with a friend the other day and we were talking about "pretty" landscapes. It was a good discussion that got a couple of ideas circulating through my head, mostly just about how I run my own stream. I do not often post straight up "pretty" landscapes to my stream. But that is certainly not because I have any shortage of them, nor is it because I don't like them. In truth, they are some of my favorite shots to take, even above the quirky Holgas, the ethereal pinholes, the off-the-wall multiple exposures, infrared, grainy crops and so on that characterize the type of shots that I normally do post. My hard drive(s, for I have three of them now) are full of high-res, high detailed landscape photos, that on a personal level I find quite satisfying.
So why don't I post more of them?
That answer is not quite as straightforward. There are a number of reasons, but they do distill down to a couple of important ones. The first is that, while I find taking landscape photos in the traditional sense very personally satisfying, I do not find them all that creatively satisfying. They do not really challenge me much creatively. A lot of landscape photography these days, as done by the majority of landscape photographers is more of a science than an art. There are so many rules, formulas and frameworks for how to make a "successful" landscape photograph that it is almost like coloring inside the lines. Yes, lots of stunning and breath-taking photos get made this way, which is why these techniques are so widely practiced. I use many of them myself on frequent occasions because sometimes that formulaic and way of photographing a landscape is the best way to capture the subject matter at hand. And as I said, many of the photos I see taken this way, I like. Many of the photos I take this way I like.
But this approach does little to make me feel like I push myself, stretch my boundaries, expand my perspectives, and overall better myself as a photographer. If we are always coloring inside the lines, then we are always limited to those same lines. Exercising and perfecting technical prowess is certainly a key ingredient to becoming a great photographer, but exercising imagination and creativity is key to setting yourself apart from all the other great lanscape photographers.
And it also boils down to what I wanted my Flickr stream to be, which was not a portfolio of just my best images. I was not interested in just putting up my home runs for the purpose of impressing my peers. Neither my ego nor my self-confidence require that kind of boost. I decided early on, that I wanted to use my stream as sort of an on-going creative blog on photography, showcasing not just various ways one can use cameras and photography and vision to create different types of photography, but I also wanted to serve as an inspiration for other photographers on how they think and look at photography in general.
So I post a wide variety because that is what I like. I post my successes, but I also post my experiments. And as experiments go, I understand that sometimes these shots work for people and sometimes they don't. It is the nature of experimenting to sometimes, or often, fail. But that is ok too. You learn more from failures than successes. So I don't mind posting stuff that is off the wall, that I realize leaves some people scratching their heads as to why did I bother posting that.
I posted "that" because if you are always staring at the same stuff (photographs that is) you will not learn anything new. Photography as an art is a very subjective subject. As it should be. But it is tempting to want to make it an objective one, to believe that by using certain laws, rules, and other gimmicks that you can somehow definitively evaluate the worth of a photograph. This is generally nonsense in my opinion. Most of the best photography and photographers I know adhere to few rules except those which they created for themselves, and most of the photographers I know who try to strictly adhere to the generally accepted "rules" of photography, while often producing good photographs, generally do not produce much exceptional photography.
So now I am ten minutes late for leaving, good thing I always plan my departure to get me to work 30 minutes early! :-p
I just wanted to sum up that last part by saying, I post much of what I do, not because I think it is the epitome of my successful attempts at photography but rather because I think that while many of my posts embody interesting or new ideas, many also fall short of what I would consider successful photographs. So I post those to show that this is ok, it is ok to fail in pursuit
Purely wahclellian
Alright so I know I spend quite a bit of time giving voice to all the strengths and abilities film cameras still possess. And though I say that I don't think it matters whether your personal image capturing device is film or digital, I realize that I spend a greater amount of my time shooting, posting and talking about film images. The reason is pretty simple, I don't actually own a digital camera. I never have. I eventually will. But for the time being I shoot all film, so it is only a short trip down logic lane to realize the bulk of my experience lies with film cameras. I know them best and so prefer them most.
That doesn't stop me from using digital though. Far from it. (Ok here is where that quiet, reserved fellow in the back raises his hand and asks, "Umm excuse me but don't you ultimately scan all your negs anyway? So in a sense you use digital imaging pretty much the same amount as film right?" Well ahem, yeah.... I do actually)
If digital one day meant the end of film altogether (highly doubtful it ever will) then that would be a sad day indeed. There are things film cameras can do that digital just plain cannot. Swing lens digital cameras anyone? Cheap and easy pinhole cameras?
But then again, there are things digital can do that film just plain cannot either. This infrared image for instance. I mean, yeah ok, one could probably argue that I could have tracked down a $30 roll of Kodak EIR, shot it properly and then tracked down a lab that still does Cibachrome and worked with them to end up with a similar image. I am not quite that .... adventurous. I would much rather spend all that time and money out making new images. Which is ultimately what it is all about right? Using what you like best to make the images that make you the happiest.
So back to this fellow. I was loaned an infrared filter a while back. And though I have yet to use it with a roll of Kodak HIE, I have been using it a ton with the store's Nikon D1x. With extremely fun results. I really am a big fan of digital color infrared. Well I am a big fan of infrared in general. But the thing that always gets my imagination going is a new technique. Something different that I can carry out to a familiar spot and discover entirely new worlds with.
I sometimes find it equally amazing and frustrating to think as I stand in any one spot there must be a countless number of images waiting to be found. Finding them is amazing, knowing they are there and unable to see them is frustrating. Every time I do uncover one though that inner six year old in me that still believes there is magic in this world wakes up the inner seven year old who in turns nudges my inner eight year old. And together they all stand around with me pointing and saying "oooh look at that!".

..... I just bought me one of these from Aspen of Hereford.
As I have a fair amount of kit in my bag, the smaller Lowepro Trekker is not really suitable now. I needed a bag that would allow me to carry the Sigma 50-500 all the time and this one seems to suit the bill quite nicely.
Room enough for 2 x SLR bodies, 1 x 300 f2.8 lens, 5/6 x smaller lens. 7/8 rolls of film and memory cards, shutter release cables and batteries etc. The front flap even has room for some sandwiches :)
Obviously though, my bag won't be filled with Canon junk like this one ........ mine will be filled with Pentax junk instead :-D
Pentax K 1000
Portrait photo of my Pentax K 1000. A gift from my BF. This is the third Pentax (film) SLR that I've owned in my lifetime. When my ME took a tumble from my camera bag the prognosis of the Hasselblad 'Camera Wizard' here in Manhattan was simply "They don't make parts for these anymore...." He somehow magically got the shutter working again but she still somehow isn't the same again, yet. That ME had served me well for quite several years after being a replacement for the one I'd been shooting with since the age of Thirteen. I love shooting film but processing costs are a huge bee-atch!!

[CVS ISO200- Nikon N80 & Tamron 28-80 > Gimp]
So this is that shot form the shadows that I was trying earlier, shot again at 0eV with the clouds alternating between obscuring the sun and letting it pass. It came out just a touch hot, but overall not bad at all. I'd prefer it to not quite be so hot because the parts of the clouds that are blown-out here aren't quite that blown-out in real-life. Of course, the camera is not the human eye, etc etc etc. So overall this isn't bad. Was definitely worse the first time, at -1eV.
Eventually I'm going to have to have a shoot-off between ISO200, ISO400 & ISO800 film to see if there is a big difference besides sensitivity. The problem is that ISO400 is not really fast enough to shoot handheld without IS after the sun goes down yet too fast to shoot < ~200mm @ F8 during the day if the sun is above the horizon (and one is not shooting into the shadows under the sun). With IS it would be a decent all-around film I guess, if a bit fast during the day still. But why not just shoot ISO800 those few times when you really need the speed, skipping ISO400 altogether? Have to try and see. No biggie, I've got plenty of time & money, right? :)
...before I buy a $2500 DSLR to replace either of my film cameras...
At $2/roll for 36-frame film and another $2/roll for development, and with my own film scanner, I figure that I can shoot about 25,000 shots before I spend $2500 shooting film. And get better resolution. Of course in a low-res format the DR may outweigh the native resolution without blur. But 25,000 shots is a *hell* of a lot of shots. Even *I* haven't taken that many shots in the past 4 years.
At 30fps those 25,000 shots would make a 12 minute movie. How sad is that. Either blow 4x the cost of a $2500 fullframe shooting 100,000 shots and producing the equivalent of a 12 minute movie with 4 frames per shot, 1/10th of a second of video per image, or drop $2500 on the fullframe and do the same thing for 1/4 of the money, not counting the storage and editing hardware & software. And you're a decent video director, then? Write your own stories, do you?
November 4th - Cheesegrater trails
We took the kids out tonight to try and find some fireworks. I think all the bonfires will actually be tomorrow because we didn't actually see that many going off tonight. Because I still needed to do a shot for today, I managed to persuade Nick to drive us into town so I could do my first ever bit of night photography. I thought the Cheesegrater car park would make a good first subject. I even managed to get some light trails into the shot too! I enjoyed my first trip out at night and once I had set up and taken a few shots, I didn't feel as self conscious about using the tripod and being out at night with my camera. I still wouldn't do it on my own though - need to find a friend to accompany me. I quite like both the colour and the black and white versions.
Be gentle with your comments as it was my first attempt!
