Somali wild ass
A few weeks ago I went along to see some friends of mine take part in a 10k run. The run was held at a well known zoo in the south of England and accord to their website anyone coming to support the runners would get a discount on the normal entry price. I got ?3 off of the ?16 entrance fee. I, and most of the other people coming to support friends and loved ones in the run, were not impressed. After the run I thought that I should make the most of the ?13 entrance and see some of the wild and exotic animals that zoos are famous for. I haven’t been to a zoo since I was a kid and don’t remember too much about them but I’m sure they weren’t this crap!
We wandered around caged enclosures of nothing with signs alleging that there was something really dangerous in them. I though the Desert Carnivores centre might have something wild in it but it turned out to house a very small sleeping tabby cat and a selection of extremely small tortoises that live off insects and plans. I’ve seen wilder things in puddles.
For sheer comedy value my favourite animal was the ‘Somali wild ass’ (which was a very bored donkey) complete with a sign saying how dangerous it was. This almost made up for the entrance fee!
I think zoos would be a lot more fun if they were like the wild. If they put Gazelles and Lions in the same enclosure then I'd happily pay ?16 to see it!
Panasonic DMC-LX5
aka, new shiny! Unplanned new shiny... found a new home for my (still) shiny LX3 and consequently had a good excuse to upgrade to the LX5. :-D
Was it worth it? Probably not, but my LX3 found a *really* good home...
And the longer zoom with improved reach (24-90mm/f2.0-3.3) on the LX5 vs the shorter (24-60mm/f2.0-2.8) on the LX3 is rather nice. The rest of the upgrades aren't quite as significant to my use. These include:
* h.264 (AVCHD Lite) instead of MJPEG for 720p movie recording (nice but not as critical).
* control dial instead of 4-way joystick (much less impact than I expected).
* button for playback mode rather than switch (thought this would be a bigger deal...).
* faster performance of AF, file writes, etc. (nice but LX3 was *just* fast enough).
* improved image stabilization (improved, yes, but not worth the price on its own)
* reduced image noise (ISO800 is now still ugly but barely usable vs. before...).
* improved dynamic range (it's there, but not hugely so).
* faster burst model (2.5fps) but unfortunately still a tiny buffer (just 3 shots).
* optical zoom while recording (quite nice!).
Lots of nice little improvements but nothing groundbreaking. Added together, even then it's hard to justify upgrading from an LX3 (or Canon S90) to an LX5... but hey, if you have an excuse to upgrade, then it's probably worthwhile.
