Reality Is Broken: Why Games Make Us Better and How They Can Change the World Visionary game designer Jane McGonigal reveals how we can harness the power of games to solve real-world problems and boost global happiness. More than 174 million Americans are gamers, and the average young person in the United States will spend ten thousand hours gaming by the age of twenty-one. According to world-renowned game designer Jane McGonigal, the reason for this mass exodus to virtual worlds is that videogames are increasingly fulfilling genuine human needs. In this groundbreaking exploration of the power and future of gaming, McGonigal reveals how we can use the lessons of game design to fix what is wrong with the real world. Drawing on positive psychology, cognitive science, and sociology, Reality Is Broken uncovers how game designers have hit on core truths about what makes us happy and utilized these discoveriesto astonishing effect in virtual environments. Videogames consistently provide the exhilarating rewards, stimulating challenges, and epic victories that are so often lacking in the real world. But why, McGonigal asks, should we use the power of games for escapist entertainment alone? Her research suggests that gamers are expert problem solvers and collaborators because they regularly cooperate with other players to overcome daunting virtual challenges, and she helped pioneer a fast-growing genre of games that aims to turn gameplay to socially positive ends. In Reality Is Broken, she reveals how these new alternate reality games are already improving the quality of our daily lives, fighting social problems such as depression and obesity, and addressing vital twenty-first-century challenges-and she forecasts the thrilling possibilities that lie ahead. She introduces us to games like World Without Oil, a simulation designed to brainstorm-and therefore avert- the challenges of a worldwide oil shortage, and Evoke, a game commissioned by the World Bank Institute that sends players on missions to address issues from poverty to climate change. McGonigal persuasively argues that those who continue to dismiss games will be at a major disadvantage in the coming years. Gamers, on the other hand, will be able to leverage the collaborative and motivational power of games in their own lives, communities, and businesses. Written for gamers and nongamers alike, Reality Is Broken shows us that the future will belong to those who can understand, design, and play games. Practical Advice for Gamers by Jane McGonigal ![]() Reality is Broken explains the science behind why games are good for us--why they make us happier, more creative, more resilient, and better able to lead others in world-changing efforts. But some games are better for us than others, and there is too much of a good thing. Here are a few secrets that aren’t in the book to help you (or the gamer in your life) get the most positive impact from playing games. This practical advice--5 key quidelines, plus 2 quick rules--is scientifically backed, and it can be summed up in a single sentence: Play games you enjoy no more than 21 hours a week; face-to-face with friends and family as often as you can; and in co-operative or creator modes whenever possible. 1. Don’t play more than 21 hours a week. Studies show that games benefit us mentally and emotionally when we play up to 3 hours a day, or 21 hours a week. (In extremely stressful circumstances--such as serving in the military during war-time--research shows that gamers can benefit from as many as 28 hours a week.) But for virtually everyone else, whenever you play more than 21 hours a week, the benefits of gaming start to decline sharply. By the time you’re spending 40 hours or more a week playing games, the psychological benefits of playing games have disappeared entirely--and are replaced with negative impacts on your physical health, relationships, and real-life goals. So always strive to keep your gaming in the sweet spot: 7–21 hours a week. 2. Playing with real-life friends and family is better than playing alone all the time, or with strangers. Gaming strengthens your social bonds and builds trust, two key factors in any positive relationship. And the more positive relationships you have in real life, the happier, healthier and more successful you are. You can get mental and emotional benefits from single-player games, or by playing with strangers online--but to really unlock the power of games, it’s important to play them with people you really know and like as often as possible. A handy rule-of-thumb: try to make half of your gaming social. If you play 10 hours a week, try to play face-to-face with real-life friends or family for at least 5 of those hours. (And if you’re not a gamer yourself--but you have a family member who plays games all the time, it would do you both good to play together--even if you think you don’t like games!) 3. Playing face-to-face with friends and family beats playing with them online. If you’re in the same physical space, you’ll supercharge both the positive emotional impacts and the social bonding. Many of the benefits of games are derived from the way they make us feel--and all positive emotions are heightened by face-to-face interaction. Plus, research shows that social ties are strengthened much more when we play games in the same room than when we play games together online. Multi-player games are great for this. But single-player works too! You can get all the same benefits by taking turns at a single-player game, helping and cheering each other on. 4. Cooperative gameplay, overall, has more benefits than competitive gameplay. Studies show that cooperative gameplay lifts our mood longer, and strengthens our friendships more, than competing against each other. Cooperative gameplay also makes us more likely to help someone in real life, and better collaborators at work--boosting our real-world likeability and chances for success. Competition has its place, too, of course--we learn to trust others more when we compete against them. But if we spend all our time competing with others, we miss out on the special benefits of co-op play. So when you’re gaming with others, be sure to check to see if there are co-op missions or a co-op mode available. An hour of co-op a week goes a long way. (Find great co-op games for every platform, and a family-friendly list too, at Co-Optimus, the best online resource for co-op gaming.) 5. Creative games have special positive impacts. Many games encourage or even require players to design and create as part of the gameplay process--for example: Spore, Little Big Planet, and Minecraft; the Halo level designer and the Guitar Hero song creator. These games have been shown to build up players’ sense of creative agency--and they make us more likely to create something outside of the game. If you want to really build up your own creative powers, creative games are a great place to start. Of course, you can always take the next creative step--and start making your own games. If you’ve never made a game, it’s easier than you think--and there are some great books to help you get started. 2 Other Important Rules: * You can get all of the benefits of a good game without realistic violence--you (or your kids) don’t have to play games with guns or gore. If you feel strongly about violence, look to games in other genres--there’s no shortage of amazing sports, music, racing, puzzle, role-playing, casual, strategy and adventure games. *Any game that makes you feel bad is no longer a good game for you to play. This should be obvious, but sometimes we get so caught up in our games that we forget they’re supposed to be fun. If you find yourself feeling really upset when you lose a game, or if you’re fighting with friends or strangers when you play--you’re too invested. Switch to a different game for a while, a game that has “lower stakes” for you personally. Or, especially if you play with strangers online, you might find yourself surrounded by other players who say things that make you uncomfortable--or who just generally act like jerks. Their behavior will actually make it harder for you to get the positive benefits of games--so don’t waste your time playing with a community that gets you down. Meanwhile, if you start to wonder if you’re spending too much time on a particular game – maybe you’re starting to feel just a tiny bit addicted--keep track of your gaming hours for one week. Make sure they add up to less than 21 hours! And you may want to limit yourself to even fewer for a little while if you’re feeling too much “gamer regret.” (13) BURNED OUT CARS On our way to work this morning we passed this car burned out, no doubt stolen by some idiot yobs during the night, now some poor sod has no car and a load of hassle getting the insurance for the car. And, when eating "real food" you absorb enzymes that allow your body to properly receive the nutrients. *It is estimated 50 million people in the US have an essential fatty acid imbalance due to insufficient intake of Omega-3's and over consumption of Omega-6's. While this negatively effects our health in many ways, it is an even bigger problem for athletes who perform repetitive activities such as training and racing. *Omega 3's are used to build every cell in our body and building muscle means more cells are needed. If you are not eating properly and are consuming more Omega 6 rich foods versus Omega 3, then you are building inferior cells. You don't want inferior cells, especially if you are an athlete. Recommendation: Eat Mila. *Ongoing chronic inflammation is not from exercise, nor the type of exercise. Inflammation is part of the healing process in a properly functioning body. Inflammation occurs when people do not produce enough natural anti-inflammatory chemicals, called eicosanoids, to counter the effects of inflammation. Most often the reason the body cannot produce these chemicals is because it is deficient in omega-3 fatty acids. *Omega 3's can help athletes enhance their performance by increasing energy, promoting muscle growth and improving recovery. *Mila absorbs up to 9 times its weight in water. Change CLothes: again A few weeks ago Donte gave you a heads up on a several items every man needs in his wardrobe. I wish to expand on the concept of his list. When we come of age as men and realize that there is more to clothing than t-shirts and jeans many of us have no clue where to start. If any of you are like me you would have gone to the magazine shelves at your local mega bookstore and browsed through GQ and the like for inspiration. Then spent endless hours trying to find and create and ensemble from memory. This is truly a backwards and tiresome approach. In comes Ticknors. Ticknors is a men fine clothier. I know “Fine Clothier” tag makes you think of high prices and snotty sales people. I must admit I have walked by this store many time before with the same thoughts in mind. Last summer I ventured into a Ticknors and what I discovered took me back a bit. He never judged or assumed I couldn’t afford his apparel. He took the time to educate me on clothing. There is something to be said for people who take pride in their craft. I know they work on commission and that is part of their motivation. I must admit the prices reflect that fact but just as eating healthier is more expensive than junk food fine tailored timeless clothing is more expensive than fubu. I feel confident in my recommendation of Ticknors at Polaris fashion center in Columbus Ohio. I suggest you venture into their store as I did that is until our magazine is published. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. Expertly written by Aviva Jill Romm, who has been providing family-centered natural health care for almost 20 years, it was one of the first books to explore botanical medicine and pregnancy. In this revised and updated edition, Ms. Romm thoughtfully follows the woman’s journey from conception to birth, focusing on natural health. She describes herbs that can promote and maintain a healthy pregnancy (along with those you should avoid during your term) and the basics of a healthy diet, with an emphasis on natural foods. (15) Tubman-Garrett Riverfront Park entrance, Wilmington DE Park named after freedom conductor, Harriet Tubman, and abolitionist, Thomas Garrett. My great great great grandfather, Abraham D Shadd, was a shoemaker and a part of Thomas Garrett's underground railroad network in the Baltimore/Wilmington/Philadelphia area. This is from Wikipedia, regarding Harriet Tubman ... Harriet Tubman (born Araminta Ross, c. 1820 – 10 March 1913) was an African-American abolitionist, humanitarian, and Union spy during the U.S. Civil War. After escaping from captivity, she made thirteen missions to rescue over seventy slaves using the network of antislavery activists and safe houses known as the Underground Railroad. She later helped John Brown recruit men for his raid on Harpers Ferry, and in the post-war era struggled for women's suffrage. Born into slavery in Dorchester County, Maryland, Tubman was beaten and whipped by her various owners as a child. Early in her life, she suffered a traumatic head wound when an irate slave owner threw a heavy metal weight at her, intending to hit another slave. The injury caused disabling seizures, headaches, and powerful visionary and dream activity, and spells of hypersomnia which occurred throughout her entire life. A devout Christian, she ascribed her visions and vivid dreams to premonitions from God. In 1849, Tubman escaped to Philadelphia, then immediately returned to Maryland to rescue her family. Slowly, one group at a time, she brought relatives with her out of the state, and eventually guided dozens of other slaves to freedom. Traveling by night and in extreme secrecy, Tubman (or "Moses", as she was called) "never lost a passenger". Heavy rewards were offered for many of the people she helped bring away, but no one ever knew it was Harriet Tubman who was helping them. When a far-reaching United States Fugitive Slave Law was passed in 1850, she helped guide fugitives further north into Canada, and helped newly-freed slaves find work. When the American Civil War began, Tubman worked for the Union Army, first as a cook and nurse, and then as an armed scout and spy. The first woman to lead an armed expedition in the war, she guided the raid on the Combahee River, which liberated more than seven hundred slaves. After the war, she retired to the family home in Auburn, New York, where she cared for her aging parents. She was active in the women's suffrage movement until illness overtook her and she had to be admitted to a home for elderly African-Americans she had helped open years earlier. After she died in 1913, she became an icon of American courage and freedom. And this from Wikipedia, regarding Thomas Garrett .... Thomas Garrett (August 21, 1789 – January 25, 1871) was an abolitionist and leader in the Underground Railroad movement before the American Civil War. Garrett was born into a prosperous landowning Quaker family on their homestead called "Thornfield" in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. The house in which he lived until 1822, which was built around 1800, still stands today in what is now Drexel Hill in Upper Darby Township. In a family already inclined to abolitionism, Thomas was exceptionally dedicated. When a family servant was kidnapped by men who planned to sell her as a slave in the South, he tracked them down and released her. A follower of the schismatic Quaker leader Elias Hicks, Garrett split with his orthodox family and moved to Wilmington in the neighboring slave state of Delaware to strike out on his own and pursue his struggle against slavery. He established an iron and hardware business and made it prosper. As he worked in the iron and hardware business in Wilmington, Garrett openly worked as a Station Master on the last stop of the Underground Railroad in the state. Because he openly defied slave hunters as well as the slave system, Garrett had no need of secret rooms in his house at 227 Shipley Street. The authorities were aware of his activities. However, he was never arrested, but in 1848 he and a fellow Quaker, John Hunn, were tried and found guilty of helping a family of slaves escape. They were both found guilty and fined. Because he was the architect of the escape, Garrett, in particular was fined $4,500. However, a compromised settlement was made and a lien was put on his house until the fine was paid. With the aid of friends Garrett was able to pay the fine and continue in his iron and hardware business and helping runaway slaves to freedom. Garrett was visited by William Lloyd Garrison, whom he admired greatly. However, they had different views regarding the opposition to slavery. Garrison was a complete non-resistant. He was willing to be a martyr to the abolition of slavery and would not defend himself if attacked physically. Garrett, on the other hand, believed slavery could only be abolished through a civil war and, when he was attacked physically, defended himself by actually subduing his attackers. first day of school... sorry for the blurriness.... first day of school today, this was me getting dressed this morning. I've been trying to gain weight (and keep it on) and I am soo happy with my weight right now. Problem is I LOVE running which basically makes you lose weight pretty fast LOL so that probably makes it harder too! You can probably imagine how skinny I was when I was dx I had lost 13 lbs in 10 days. When you only weigh 120, that is A LOT! I have always been skinny and could eat whatever I want but this was quite different. I'm actually at 128 now :) go me :) I tried to keep it on the DL about my D today but one not so smart girl kinda ruined that for me LOL but it's ok. I handled 3 stupid comments I got today with sarcasm which earned me some laughs from others around me and so I was fine :) Best thing ever: I went up to my math teacher after class to tell her I'm a type 1 diabetic and I might have to test in class, eat or give myself a shot. I was gonna explain to her that I might seem like I'm not focusing etc about highs/lows when she said "I am sorry to hear that. My niece is a type 1, as well!" what a small world! I told her "I'm sorry to hear that" but at the same time I was so excited because it gave me some peace of mind knowing that if I bottomed out in that class, she'd know what to do. She asked me when I was dx'd and turns out her niece was dx'd a couple of months before me so...it was nice talking to someone that knows more about D than most people seem to :) Also: no problems=> no need for me to get Student Disability Services involved :) yay :) I was running pretty high in the morning. Was 192 in the car, then I started feeling nauseous and was really hot while waiting to get into my class room. When I tested again in the class room I was at 280. Was pretty much almost back in range before lunch and then dropped low in the afternoon....might wanna increase my breakfast I:C but I'll wait and see if I'll be the same tomorrow again first. BTW Confessions of a Disney Girl: when it comes to science/languages i'm a total Justin Russo ("knowledge is cool!") BUT math *shakes head* I'm Alex Russo's twin! ("if I do that homework, I'll be exhausted!") I'm hopeless... Yay for: no huge D-problems on the first day of school Yay for: awareness Yay for: math homework *gag* So tell me, how was your day? 1.365 The first day of the rest of our lives Steve and I were married on Tanabata, 7/7/2011. We spent our first night and day as husband and wife at a local hotel recharging with no demands on our attention except each other. And with the wedding over we discovered we have nothing to stress out about. Meaning this is the perfect time to start a 365 project! We will be taking a photo of us as a couple every day for the next year. We are excited and think you should be too. Albert spoke at the inaugural Earth Day ceremony in 1970. (7) Losing a lot of weight Our chubby little Maxie dropped a quarter of her body weight rapidly around the same time Pepper did. She went from 31 g of chubby to a svelte 25 g to a skinny 21 g. So a trip to the vet was in order a couple of weeks ago. Off we went to find out that she had injured her mouth (who knows how) and her front teeth were somewhat loose. So we've been mincing, chopping, grinding, and soaking various kinds of food to a soft consistency. She is no longer losing weight. She looks like a svelte healthy mini-ham now in stead the little ball of chub. We don't know if she should put some weight back on or how long she will need soft foods. Maxie is doing well and making friends with us, now that we are down to 3 hamsters. She has a chance of getting the attention she deserves. Losing Weight Is An Uphill Battle Took this yesterday. Had I taken it Monday afternoon I would have looked four or five pounds lighter, but it was mostly dehydration. So I hydrated. And I ate a lot of chips to get some salt. And back to the usual. Next week will be the target week for loing a stone, and I have my doubts. Brute Force Push-Ups - How to do 100 Push-Ups Every Day and Build a Powerful Chest in 1 Month If you want a 15-minute "crash course" on how to get a huge, "alpha male" chest without lifting weights (or even breaking a sweat) then this book will show you how. It's called: "Brute Force Push Ups" And it was written by world class fitness leader Rich Bryda. As the title says, this short, easy-to-read book is ALL about push ups. But don't let that fool you into thinking you can't have a big, "tank-like" chest. Fact is, all the old time body builders used this simple exercise. And today the world's top athletes (like the great Herschel Walker) do this exercise to get ripped without doing a single bench press. You can, too. Even if you have "bad genetics." And even if you have a puny "sizzle chest" that's flat as a pancake now. The reason why the formula inside this book works is due to a secret neurological trick discovered by some smart Russian Special Forces soldiers (now used by certain eastern European body builders and other top athletes "in the know"). It's fast, too. You do not need to spend more than a few minutes per day on them. And, as you'll see, this workout is NOT based on sweating, straining or needing to be disciplined. (It's perfect for "lazy" guys.) Here are some of the benefits you'll get from this book: Do over 100 push ups per day with ease. (And in as little as 10 minutes.) Build a powerful "button popping" chest in just 30 days. (You may even have to get new shirts -- as you literally could pop the buttons off any tighter shirts you own now!) Develop a bigger chest than weight lifters who can bench 400+ pounds. Never have to spend money on a gym or equipment. Have the kind of "alpha male" chest women can't help but notice and want to touch and hug. (Women go crazy over men with big chests since you'll make them feel safe.) Prevent weight lifting injuries. (If you are already a weight lifter, doing pushups will strengthen your core and the tendons you use for the bench, making you almost impervious to injury.) Neurologically "program" your entire body to get stronger without ANY struggle or strain whatsoever. Build rock solid abs over time. (Push ups naturally work your abs -- and by doing 100+ a day your abs will get a great work out too.) And much, much more... Bottom line? There's an art and science to doing push ups like this. Everything from hand placement... to exactly how many reps (and sets) to do... to how much rest to take and on what exact days to do them... to exactly how to do them in a way where you use your neurology to increase your strength all at the same time. You won't learn this in high school gym or from anyone in a weight room. These secrets are used by a few, "elite" athletes, weight lifters and Special Forces soldiers in Russia and Europe. They can get you ripped. They can get your body lean and powerful. And they can make you stand out in a crowd with a big, developed chest women (and jealous guys) can't help but be in awe of. More: If you buy "Brute Force Pushups" TODAY, you'll get this bonus book: "Brute Force Pull-Ups" If you're going to develop a big chest, you might as well develop a big "v-shaped" back, too. And this book shows you how to use the same principles in "Brute Force Pushups" to build a huge "gorilla-like" back in just a matter of weeks. And let's face it: With a big chest AND back you will dominate any room you walk into. Women won't be able to look away and even seasoned weight lifters (who spend hours per day in the weight room) will beg you to tell them your secret. Plus, it's all based on SCIENCE. Hard science that's been proven to work for small "runt like" guys as well as veteran athletes looking for an edge. Grab "Brute Force Pushups" today and "Brute Force Pulls Ups" is yours free. (6) The Fonz & me. Yep, nearly two months since I last posted and you get a couple pairs o' feet. Sooooooooo...let's catch up. How have you been? You're looking good...have you lost weight? Remember good ol' whatshisface and how we used to have all those good times? Well, great talking to you. We should do lunch. I'll call you. Enough about you, let's talk about how I've been. Turns out I'm doing great. Busy watching the fonz crack me up all day and shooting a lot of photo gigs in between laughs. The end...or IS it? 2009.246 do my feet look skinnier? So I have been running with a surprisingly level of commitment for the last two months (I took a week off when I got the ear infection, but I thought I was warranted) and I have lost weight, according to my bathroom scale; but, I am not so sure where I have lost said weight. I feel like my shoes are feeling a bit looser these days...I think I am losing weight in my feet! This is freaking absurd. lose weight in two months If you want to build a wide, powerful back that makes even hardcore weight lifters wonder how you did it... and do it in the next 30 days without straining, struggling or even so much as sweating... then "Brute Force Pull-Ups" can get the job done. Here's the deal: If you have a big back, then you're BIG. It's that simple. Big chest, big arms, and big legs can get covered up and minimized in clothes, but a big back is hard to cover up... even in a sweater. And this fascinating new book teaches you a truly "effortless" way to build up a big "alpha male" intimidating back using JUST pull-ups. There are no weights required. And (believe it or not) it takes almost ZERO effort. This scientifically proven secret to build your back inside this book (JUST doing pull-ups) works so quickly it's guaranteed to make your bodybuilding friends drool in envy. And it was discovered by a Russian Spetsnaz warrior for building bigger, stronger and more powerful muscles in the fastest time humanely possible. Fact is, not 1 in 1,000 fitness trainers knows about it. And you won't see it on TV or in the fitness magazines, either. But you can learn it in just a few minutes by reading this short book, which can be read in just one sitting. Here are some of the benefits of using doing pull-ups inside: Get a noticeably BIGGER back in just 30 days (the kind of back in a perfect "V" shape... that men envy and women can't take their eyes off of) No straining, struggling or even sweating required (as you'll see, if it's hard, that means you're doing it wrong) Can be done in just minutes per day (perfect for if you're always on the go) No weights or gym needed (all you need is a pull-up bar you can get cheap online or in most sporting goods stores) Literally "programs" your nervous system to make your muscles bigger, leaner and more functional (most body builders cannot do even a single pull up despite their size -- you'll do as many as 20 or more within just a few weeks, even if you can only do 3 or 4 pull-ups now!) Forces your body to dump a ton of "Growth Hormone" into your system (which not only packs solid slabs of muscle onto your body... but also keeps you looking younger and your sex drive running on all cylinders well into your 40's, 50's and 60's) Grants you almost "super human" strength -- doing as many as 20, 30 even 50 (or more) pull-ups in a single set (impressing the hell out of any man or woman in the room) And a whole lot more! If you want to get "lean and mean" doing NOTHING but pull-ups a few minutes per day, then this book will get the job done. It's short (you can read it in less than 15 minutes). It's powerful. And the science inside is proven to build giant backs on even skinny "wet noodle" men born with bad genetics. Free Bonus Book: If you buy "Brute Force Pull-Ups" today you also get a bonus book: "15 Second Diet Tricks: How To Lose Weight While Eating Bad Foods" This book is getting rave reviews from men and women alike. LOW CALORIE VEGETARIAN LASAGNA - LOW CALORIE
Low Calorie Vegetarian Lasagna - Calorie Count Vegetables - Free Calorie Trackers. Low Calorie Vegetarian Lasagna
Simple Lasagna Pan Our award winning Edge Brownie Pan was a big idea, but this one is BIGGER! (By 50%, in fact). It's our brand new Simple Lasagna Pan, and it's a smarter way to bake and serve everyone's favorite Italian dish. In a conventional pan, lasagna can get messy in a hurry. After a few servings are removed, the layers slump and the noodles slide... and what's left in the pan starts to look a lot less appetizing (You'll know you're in trouble when your dinner guests put down their forks and reach for their spoons). Our Simple Lasagna Pan solves this problem by keeping the noodles and layers neatly stacked, regardless of how many portions are removed. Each serving of lasagna is held in place by the pan's inner walls, so even the last bite will look (and taste) as good as the first. The single baking chamber allows sauces to flow evenly throughout the pan, and the durable nonstick coating releases even the stickiest foods with ease. Lasagna also bakes more consistently in the Simple Lasagna Pan because more heat is distributed to the pan's middle, where food typically takes longer to bake. The nonstick pan is constructed of hard anodized cast aluminum for superior durability, and it's 100% made in the USA. Each pan comes complete with a custom nylon spatula and lasagna recipes insert. As you rush through the door, the kids are cranky and everyone is asking what's for dinner. You open the freezer and realize you forgot to take meat out to defrost that morning. You are now stuck with the stress of throwing together a meal at the last minute. Or you decide, for the 3rd time that week to order out. Let's face it - we're busy. (14) September 29, 2008 - diabetes365 - day 357 It's not what it looks like. Sort of. I had a low tonight before dinner (56). So I treated it with a juice box and a few crackers. About a hour later I was ready to eat dinner. I had baked a little frozen (breaded) chicken. I tested to see what I was at, and to plug in the carbs for my bolus. Imagine my shock when this number appeared on my meter. My blood sugar had gone up 530 points in 1 hour. I don't think that is even humanly possible. I washed my hands, tested again, and was greeted with a 122. Whew! Too bad with the UltraLink the crazy 581 is in my pump memory (and I don't think it can be deleted). P.S. That's a cup of sugar because I am working on my next batch of Friendship Bread - but was not the cause of the high - it wasn't out yet. P11500081-Cooking for current & future dinners Since I almost always have to bring my dinner to work, I cook in large batches and freeze the food. This was a picnic shoulder fresh ham roast (rear) and a beef pot roast (front). We are on low carb diets, so I have to be careful with sauces. For the fresh ham I used a no-carb spicy BBQ sauce that is really very tasty. For the pot roast, just beef broth and Jack Daniels Mesquite flavored mustard. I browned both roasts in olive oil and herbs and spices. I used a pre-made dry rub for the beef. Then I cooked them at low heat for 4 hours. Very easy and economical. Both are inexpensive cuts. low carb frozen dinners Low Carb, sugar free homemade ice cream is a luxury dessert for all occasions. Mixing dough: ? Crumble or chop the bacon into small pieces. ? Chop the chives. One pkg of fresh chives from your markets produce aisle works out to about ? cup. ? Mix the mashed potatoes, 2 cups of flour, salt, yeast. If you cooked the bacon early enough and the bacon fat has already solidified, I add it at this point. Otherwise, add it in the next step. I use a Kitchenaid mixer with the paddle attachment for this point. ? Add the sour cream, water, chives, and bacon. Mix well. You’ll have a somewhat gloppy mess in the bowl. ? I switch to my bread dough attachment at this point and mix in 2 cups of flour. ? As the dough starts coming together, add spoonfuls of flour until you reach a firm but sticky/tacky dough. This is approximately 6 cups of flour. I will usually knead in the last bit of flour by hand to get the best feel for the dough. Rise & Bake: ? Place dough in an oiled bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Let rise until doubled. Usually about 90 min to two hours, but can vary depending on yeast and temp in your proofing area. I use a baker’s spray for oiling the bowl, and also spray the wrap I use to cover the dough, as the dough is quite sticky. ? Turn dough out onto a floured surface and gently degas it. I usually stretch the dough as if I was making a rectangular pizza and then fold it as if I was doing a letter fold on a piece of paper, and then roll of fold it once again in the opposite direction. ? Portion and shape the loaves. I get two 10" round loaves from this recipe. It could also be made into dinner rolls, or shaped as sandwich bread. I don’t have a baking stone so I use baking sheets with baking parchment, and a touch of corn meal sprinkled on them to set the loaves on. ? Allow the shaped loaves to double. As they get to size, pre-heat the oven to 450F. I want to cook them the first 5 minutes at 425, but I know when I open the oven to put the loaves in I am going lose about 25 degrees or more in heat, I pre-heat to a higher temp. ? When you are ready to put the loaves in the oven, turn the heat to 425F, and put them in. Set a timer for 5 min. ? When timer goes off, lower heat to 350F, and set timer for 25 minutes. ? After 25 minutes, check internal temp of bread for temp of 195F or for a nice golden brown color. Depending on your oven, they might need a few more minutes in the oven. ? When done, cool on racks. flax seed honey corn bread There are not enough flax seed recipes out there. 365 Beverages-009 Club Soda Club soda? Yes. No sooner had I stocked the previously sparse bar for my 365 beverage project, than Jim said, "Let's do the South Beach Diet again." So. No Shuga. No Alkyhall. Don't tell anyone, but I ate the cherry. Sometimes you have to make sacrifices for art. The diet is most strict the first two weeks. I will have to to present and garnish low carb (or no-carb) beverages. The consolation is when you follow the recipes and menus for the South Beach phase one, you eat really, really well. Gwynneville ChicknRoast - George's Special I asked the lovely people at Gwynneville's ChicknRoast if they had anything low carb on their menu. They replied that their daughter was on a low carb diet and that their son George often cooked a low carb meal for his sister - it consists of beef cooked on the barbeque with a special marinade then layered over a large serve of greek salad featuring the best marinated feta I've ever tasted.
