My lenses

My lenses

These are the lenses I have for my M-mount cameras.

28mm, 35mm, and 50mm lengths; I have no interest in anything wider or longer as photos made with superwides and telephotos tend to be more about how the lens works than the photograph itself. I do like the focusing tabs on the 35 and 28 - - if you shoot enough you'll find yourself able to focus by feel after a while.

I've made prints by hand in the darkroom by all of these lenses on 11x14 to 16x20 paper. This is an environment where lens characteristics can be seen. Some opinions:

28mm f2.8 Elmarit: This lens is so sharp it approaches medium format territory. With 400asa film.

35mm f2 Summicron: The greatest all around lens I have and the one that I would be content to shoot the rest of my life with. It is sharp when you want it to be so, but the rendering it provides is such that you realize it is probably a better lens than you are a photographer. Looking at negs on a light table through a loupe things honestly pop out in 3D. No joke.

50mm f2.8 Elmar: A Leica shop employee in Ginza remarked that this is probably Leica's best lens, better than the Noctilux for character. It is my primary portrait lens and I honestly wouldn't trade it for a Noctilux.

50mm F2 Summicron (on the M5): A 25,000 yen ($250) find in a now closed camera shop, this lens is brilliant if I want to shoot 50mm and want crispness over the character of the Elmar. Seen with an MS-Optical vented hood.

Mamiya/Sekor 1000 DTL

Mamiya/Sekor 1000 DTL

When I was shopping for my first camera, I would have liked to have bought a 1000 DTL, but it was just out of reach price-wise. Even better would have been a Spotmatic, but that was even further out.

So when I had the opportunity this last spring to buy a spotless 1000 DTL for under $25 with equally pristine case, I jumped at the chance. The camera is a pleasure to hold and has a sublime shutter sound...by far the quietest I have ever used on an SLR.

Sorry that the camera is chopped off a little. The picture was originally taken to showcase the Auto Mamiya/Sekor 55/1.8 lens
