Savannah - the new girl
Savannah arrived the other day and she is a cat lady... I think she brought around 14 cats... Also, she is wearing a lovely gift/trade by Jaszmade! Thanks Jasz! We love it and really needed some fresh non Squeaky clothes in the house! Stockings are Squeaky...
On a personal note - anyone waiting on me - I will be shipping today (some stuff did get out)/(edit wednesday - still a bit of hand sewing to do). I had some personal issues that pretty much ruined the entire week for me last week including my 40th birthday. :( My list of things I have to do (besides SM) is long - but, my priority today is getting orders out.
Savannah, Georgia
In the late 80's or early 90's, there was a TV mini series called Savannah. I remembered the beautiful old houses and the large trees and I had said to myself then that if I ever had a chance, I would one day visit that City. It was exactly how I remembered it from the TV series and much more. This is a beautiful City with numerous Squares and beautiful large houses. I wish I could have stayed longer to fully appreciate it's unique atmosphere.

Living Area to Bedroom Area
Taken by window.
Aside from the terminal clutter (why yes, those suitcases are from different trips), the thing I noticed most when looking at the pix is that my walls really need more help than I thought. Most of the furniture is the same height, there are virtually no windows, no moulding or other interest, and I desperately need to deal with the vast expanses of nothingness.
Plan is a curtain on track to divide the space. Fabric undecided. I have track, but changed my mind about the curtains I bought, so I need to return them and it's back to the drawing board.
Back to Sonnenberg - Zilpha's Bedroom
Another look at Zilpha's Bedroom on the second floor at Sonnenberg. This bedroom was a guest bedroom that was primarily used by Mary Thompson's sister, Zilpha Backus, a local school teacher living in Canandaigua. Zilpha would spend a great deal of time at her sister's house throughout the summer months. Notice the vintage bedroom set, the trunk and the vintage clothing display in the room. Located in the mansion at Sonnenberg Gardens & Mansion State Historic Park at 151 Charlotte Street in Canandaigua, NY. (130)

Deacon Brodie's Tavern
On the corner of Lawnmarket and Bank Street.
William Brodie (28 September 1741 – 1 October 1788), more commonly known by his prestigious title of Deacon Brodie, was a Scottish cabinet-maker, deacon of the trades guild and Edinburgh city councillor, who maintained a secret life as a burglar, partly for the thrill, and partly to fund his gambling.
By day, Brodie was a respectable businessman, member of the burgh council and deacon (or president) of the Incorporation of Wrights and Masons. Part of his job in building cabinets was to install and repair their locks and other security mechanisms and repair door locks. He also served on a jury. He socialised with the gentry of Edinburgh, meeting poet Robert Burns and the painter Sir Henry Raeburn. He was also a member of The Edinburgh Cape Club.
At night, however, Brodie became a burglar and thief. He used his daytime job as a way to gain knowledge about the security mechanisms of his clients and to copy their keys using wax impressions. As the foremost wright of the city, Brodie was asked to work in the homes of many of the richest members of Edinburgh society. He used the illicit money to maintain his second life, including five children, two mistresses who did not know of each other, and a gambling habit. He reputedly began his criminal career around 1768 when he copied keys to a bank door and stole ?800. In 1786 he recruited a gang of three thieves, Brown, Smith and Ainslie.
The case that lead to Brodie's downfall began later in 1786 when he organised an armed raid on an Excise office in Chessel's Court on the Canongate. Brodie's plan failed and Ainslie was captured. Ainslie agreed to turn King's evidence, to avoid transportation, and informed on the rest of the gang. Brodie escaped to the Netherlands intending to flee to the United States but was arrested in Amsterdam and shipped back to Edinburgh for trial.
The trial started on 27 August 1788. At first there was no hard evidence against Brodie before the tools of his criminal trade were found in his house; copied keys, a disguise and pistols. The jury found Brodie and his henchman George Smith, a grocer, guilty. Smith was an English locksmith responsible for a number of thefts, even stealing the silver mace from the University of Edinburgh.
Brodie and Smith were hanged at the Tolbooth on 1 October 1788, using a gallows Brodie had designed and funded the year before. According to one tale, Brodie wore a steel collar and silver tube to prevent the hanging from being fatal. It was said that he had bribed the hangman to ignore it and arranged for his body to be removed quickly in the hope that he could later be revived. If so, the plan failed. Brodie was buried in an unmarked grave at the Parish Church in Buccleuch. However rumours of his being seen in Paris circulated later and gave the story of his scheme to evade death further publicity.
Popular myth holds that Deacon Brodie built the first gallows in Edinburgh and was also its first victim. Of this William Roughead in Classic Crimes states that after research he was sure that although the Deacon may have had some hand in the design "...it was certainly not of his construction, nor was he the first to benefit by its ingenuity".
The dichotomy between Brodie's respectable facade, and his real nature inspired Robert Louis Stevenson to write The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Stevenson's father had furniture made by Brodie.
Deacon Brodie is commemorated by a pub of that name on Edinburgh's Royal Mile, on the corner between the Lawnmarket and Bank Street which leads down to The Mound, and a close (or alleyway) off the Royal Mile has been named after him. There is also a pub in Ward Road, Dundee named after him. A pub in New York City carrying his name sits on the south side of the famous west side 46th Street Restaurant Row between 8th Avenue and 9th Avenue, closer to 9th Avenue.
In 1975 publisher Hamish Hamilton published a book by Forbes Bramble about his life: The Strange Case of Deacon Brodie.
In 1997 a TV movie of the same name was made starring Billy Connolly.
Kes
Kes (1969) was Ken Loach's second feature film, and marks his move away from the self-conscious experimentalism of his earlier work.
As before, Loach developed a close partnership with the author of the source work, in this case Barry Hines, on whose novel A Kestrel for a Knave the film is based. Loach worked with both Hines and producer Tony Garnett to adapt it as a film script.
The dominant theme of Kes is the way in which the education system stifles the talents of many young working-class children, offering them little choice but to follow the narrow path laid out for them by an industrial capitalist society which sees them as fit only for unskilled manual or office work. This theme runs through much of Loach's work.
The influence of Italian neo-realism film-making can be traced in Kes, as in Poor Cow (1967). Loach explained, "the camera's job was to record in a sympathetic way and to be unobtrusive, not to be slick." Loach and his cameraman Chris Menges didn't, as is common in fiction films, mark spots for the actors to hit, but instead tried to accommodate the actors' movements. Loach, though, has admitted that throughout his films, including Kes, "I lay traps, as it were," for example by moving furniture. The apparent simplicity and directness of Loach's filming thus contains an element of manipulation which is hidden from both the audience and the actors.
Casting is also a striking feature of Kes. Colin Welland, as the English teacher, Farthing, was the only professional actor in the cast, although several, notably Brian Glover as the bullying Games teacher, went on to acting careers. All of the pupils, including Dai Bradley, who gives a remarkably natural performance as Billy, came from the Barnsley school in which the film was shot, while the headmaster was played by the school's own head. As with several Loach films, many of the adult cast were found in local clubs where they worked as entertainers and comics. Loach has commented that he casts for "authenticity of age, class or region," believing that even skilled actors cannot disguise their class origins under the close scrutiny of the camera.
Initially, there were difficulties in getting Kes shown, and it had a patchy release after opening in Doncaster. Since then, however, it has become one of Loach's best known and admired films.

Based on their extensive feedback, made more than 70 design changes were made.
All 300 rooms will be private -private rooms reduce the spread of infection.
Unless medically necessary, patients will not be disturbed by staff from 10:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. to check vitals, drawing blood or administering medication.
Alcoves for the health care team will be located outside each patient room. These areas will be quiet, with no overhead paging, and staff can check on patients through alcove windows, leaving doors closed.
Features include:

2. Patients and family members can send a daily evaluation of care and service directly to the hospital’s CEO and COO from the Internet service in their rooms. Patients can also use the TVs in their rooms to place food orders, 24/7. Patients can watch educational programs about their illnesses, Direct TV, and have a number of other entertainment options available to them.
3. Family members have space to stay overnight in every room and are not restricted by visiting hours.
4. To improve care at the bedside, all members of the health care team – not just physicians - are included during patient rounds.
5. Carpeting has been eliminated from patient rooms because it has been shown to harbor microbes and spread germs.

Shrine of St Oliver Plunkett
Oliver Plunkett (1625 - 1681) was archbishop of Armagh and primate of All Ireland from 1668, at a time when the country was in a state of civil and religious disorder after the interventions of Oliver Cromwell.
He persevered for ten years in his effort to ameliorate this state of affairs, until the discovery of a non-existent “Popish Plot” against the English government (invented and revealed by Titus Oates, who implicated many before he was executed for his part in it) gave the authorities an excuse to act against many prominent Catholics.
Plunkett was arrested in Ireland but taken to London for trial; one of his companions was saved by being appointed as Bavarian Ambassador to London and therefore acquiring diplomatic immunity, but for Plunkett there was no such escape, and he was hanged at Tyburn, cheating his executioners by dying before he could be ceremonially disembowelled.
Regarded as a martyr for the Catholic faith, St Oliver Plunkett's body is enshrined in Downside Abbey in Somerset, together with other relics such as the notes for his defence in the trial against him. His memory is kept on 1 July.
Bishop Plunkett's Stone
Thomas Plunkett was the eldest son of the Lord Chancellor of Ireland. He came to Tourmakeady about 1807 and built a fishing lodge. He gradually bought up the small local landlords and evicted many of the tenants. When George Moore got into financial difficulties Plunkett bought him out. In 1839 Plunkett became Bishop of Tuam and set himself the task of converting Tourmakeady to Protestantism. His sister Katherine set up a Protestant school and many tenants were threatened with eviction unless they agreed to send their children to her school. During the famine years Katherine ran a soup kitchen for those who turned Protestant. She was known as Cait a Bhrothain (Kate of the Soup) and the term Sooper was applied to those who changed their religion. The local parish priest Pr. Pat Lavelle started a campaign to expose the Plunkett's. He instituted a number of court cases against them and received a great deal of publicity in the English Press of the time. Bishop Plunkett died in 1866 and is buried in the Church of Ireland Churchyard in Tourmakeady.

Street in Brooklyn, NY.
Drew from double parked car somewhere in Brooklyn, didn’t pay attention what street, because ran away from police, giving tickets, because was parked illegally on the cleaning side. Know that I turned somewhere from Stillwell Ave in Southern part of Brooklyn. I like these red roofs, I wish I can live in the house like this, especially if it will have wood stove with Holland tiles and dark 18 century furniture. Used ink and pencil in Moleskine.

A bit of movie trivia - in the film "Dog Day Afternoon" (1975)
with Al Pacino - you can see this area. The location of the bank (make believe )
is about a block behind me on the right side.
So next time you view the scene of Pacino screaming "Attica ! Attica !"
pay attention to the film's ariel views.
