Torino, Piazza San Carlo, Caval d'Brons, Chiesa di Santa Cristina und Chiesa di San Carlo Borromeo (St. Christina Church and St. Charles Borromeo Church)

Eli plays the piano. He also has a guitar. Last year in 5th grade he could be in orchestra only so he chose the violin until he got to 6th grade...when he picked up the trumpet. Apparently, no students start out on the French horn. It's something that's only offered to certain students after the first semester.

Eli told us back in December that he wanted to do the French horn. We said we'd talk about it. Luckily this horn is checked out from school but if we let him do it then we've got this trumpet that we just purchased (for a pretty penny!) in August. Additionally it's required to have a tutor so we'll need to pay for that as well. So we decided he wouldn't do it. And I sent a note to his band teacher this morning saying so.

I picked Eli up from piano this afternoon and he walked out to the car carrying his trumpet case...and a French horn case. He said he guesses that his teacher didn't get my note. (Uh huh, sure!) And that he really wants to play it.

So I come home and find this note from his teacher in my inbox...

"Thanks for the note. I did check out a French horn and book to Eli today. He said there was some concern at home, but he seems to think things will work out. He has displayed a strong desire to play the horn. I would love to get a chance to visit with you about this at some point. Eli has the potential to be a very good horn player. He could be a very good trumpet player as well, but it’s a lot harder to find good horn players than it is to find good trumpet players! As a horn player, he’d also have a much greater shot at some of the competitive things available to students starting next year, like honor band auditions, all-state band auditions, and making the high school wind ensemble. I feel very confident in Eli’s potential as a horn player, but if you and/or Brad have concerns, please feel free to call me at the number below. Obviously, it is ultimately a decision that has to be made in your home, so I will support whatever you decide."

Darn that musically gifted boy of mine!

Me and my 1966 Guild Mark I

Me and my 1966 Guild Mark I

Man I love that guitar, mahogany is the perfect wood. I like the way spruce top guitars sound also, but there is just something so deep and rich about a mahogany top guitar. The Mark I was actually the cheapest Guild Guitar made, and didn't sell all that well at first, so there were less made. Because it was a an entry level nylon string classical guitar it didn't have a mass appeal. It was to "budget" for the serious classical player, and it didn't gain any momentum as a serious piece until the folk music revolution of the 60's. But even then, most folk musicians opted to play Martin guitars. There are 5 lines of older Guild Mark series guitars, the Mark I through the Mark V, the latter being the more expensive at the time of production. However, if you can actually find a 1960's Mark I you have a treasure, there just aren't very many around anymore. I wouldn't sell mine, I've had offers of $1000 plus. I can't explain it, there is just something magical about the sound of this little guitar.
