The Surprising Arm at the Grand Canyon - photo 2
I had this dummy arm. It was basically a plastic hand in padded long shirt sleeve. I took it with me on a trip out West and don't ask me why. I think it was just the type of fella I was during those days, at least. Anyway, while I was at the Grand Canyon, I put the surprising arm over the edge of the thing just to see if any Japanese tourists would react. And they did but I couldn't understand what they were saying, but the cadence sort of indicated that they were surprised.
By the way, I call the dummy hand the "surprising arm" because that's how it was described on the packaging when I bought it - made in China. It's comical how the Chinese market their wares sometimes for English-speaking consumption. And what they had come up with for this one was, "the surprising arm." Go figure.
There are three further stories regarding my surprising arm: 1. After I first got it, I jammed it in the trunk or the boot of my car (having the arm stick out) then I let a Lisa see it after driving over to her house one night. Her face went extremely pale. I mean, her complexion is very pale anyway, but she went as white as a sheet. Like death warmed up. So I asked her what was wrong, thinking, "this is a bit extreme, her reaction (beyond what was expected for an obvious prank)." Anyway, it turns out that her grandfather was murdered and they found his body stuffed in the trunk of a car. True story. I felt a bit odd about it, to be honest.
2. I took the surprising arm to a golf course in Pheonix (while on that trip out West) and I played a round with people I really didn't know. On the last tee, and after the other three people in my group had already hit (2 of them strangers to me) I did my usual routine that I had done all day - address the ball, wiggle a bit, steady and center myself, concentrate - while the three of them stood behind me and to the left, just off of the tee box. That is, they watching my back as I was doing the usual tee off. Well, on this particular drive, I had the surprising arm up in my white top. My real arm was pulled inside the jersey. So when I hit my ball, which was also a prank ball I had been saving - made of powder - the surprising arm flew out and off, and landed up the fairway. The club whizzed away of course also. And the ball when I smacked it went up like a puff of smoke. And just all at this same time I shouted an agonizing and prolonged "Aaaaaaagh!"
A split second later I looked around to see the reactions of the golfers and I can't even begin to describe the look on their faces. But if I was trying to describe it, I suppose it would be that their expression (and remember they were tired as it was at the end of a round) was a mixture of an exclamation mark and question mark - "a sort of what the ---- was that" type thing, mixed in with a pained and worried look and of course, with startle thrown in for good measure. Classic.
And lastly....
3. The story of how I lost the surprising arm. Actually it's the story of how I willingly ended my relationship with it. I put it on my lunch tray, fingers-end first, and then put it on to a conveyor belt (at a university/hospital center restaurant) that rolls away out of view and into a hole in the wall - presumably to emerge into the back kitchen are where the dishwashers wait with a big hang down spray nozzle things, to clear the trays, wash the dishes. I wondered what the bloke thought as he saw an arm come though the tunnel. I wonder if he was surprised.
Needless to say, I never went to retrieve it. I think I just wanted to let it rest.
Counter above the dishwasher
This area is a bit of a problem, though it has improved. I have too many of those canisters. However I used to have the flour and sugar in the narrower glass canisters, which were too small to level off a measuring cup into. I replaced them with wider plastic ones and they work great. A huge improvement. But I've still got the glass ones with rice, tea, etc.
The knife magnetic strip works fine but there are too many knives. Some of the smaller ones are getting rusty so they'll go soon.
