The Ritz-Carlton New York, Central Park South
50 Central Park South, New York, New York 10019

Architect Emery Roth designed the top section of the St. Moritz with several irregular setbacks, dressed window surrounds and decorative spandrels.
--------------------------
According to the NY Times Donald Trump bought the St. Moritz for $72 million in 1985 from a syndicate led by Harry B. Helmsley. He intended to renovate the property, but instead sold it in 1988 to Alan Bond, an Australian entrepreneur, for $180 million. Mr. Bond eventually gave up the St. Moritz to his lender, F.A.I. Insurances. F.A.I. bought the land beneath the St. Moritz and ran the hotel for much of the 1990's.

In April 1998 Ian Schrager, in partnership with NorthStar Capital Investment Corp. acquired the St. Moritz Hotel. The seller was FAI Insurance, an Australian Insurance Company. Credit Suisse First Boston provided acquisition financing.

FAI Insurance reported in its 1998 Year End Report that it sold the St. Moritz Hotel in New York for U.S.$185 million and leasing of the fee simple (freehold land) to Ian Schrager Hotels LLC.

FAI retained the fee simple deed valued at U.S.$115 million as part of the transaction. Analysts reported that the value of the land alone exceeds the market capitalization of the entire Company.

Schrager planned to call upon Philippe Starck to design and redevelop the St. Moritz as a world-class property. Starck was responsible for the design of four of Mr. Schrager's other properties: Royalton and Paramount in New York, Delano in Miami Beach and Mondrian in West Hollywood.

A month before selling to Ian Schrager F.A.I. was planning to participate in a $110 million reconstruction of the St Moritz with Donald Trump and Bankers Trust. Trump was planning to strip the 35-story limestone and brick building down to its steel girders and build condominiums under the skin of a new facade.

The NY Times reported in November 1999 that Christopher M. Jeffries of Millennium Partners struck a deal to buy the 69-year-old hotel from Ian Schrager's hotel company, which had bought it 18 months earlier. Millennium intends to provide The once stylish hotel a full makeover and become a 300-room Ritz-Carlton Hotel. Under the terms of the deal, Millennium adnd Schrager's company would form a joint venture to convert the top 12 floors of the 35-story building into 14 luxury condominiums and selling for more than $10 million each. Millennium agreed to payoff Schrager Hotels $95 million mortgage with Credit Suisse First Boston and to spend about $150 million renovating the St. Moritz. To build the condominiums Millennium would be required to buy at least a portion of the land under the hotel owned by F.A.I. Insurances.

The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company removed its flags and severed its agreement to manage a nearby hotel at 112 Central Park South in May 1998

The NY Post reported in December 2001 that eight of the 11 condos at 50 Central Park South have sold at prices ranging from $16 million to $50 million.

In August 2008 Real estate developer Christopher Jeffries, whose Millennium Partners turned the St. Moritz into a Ritz-Carlton with 277 rooms and 11 full-floor condos, has sold his 29th floor, 5,954-square-foot condo in the building for $28.5 million.

Millennium Partners opened the 277-room Ritz-Carlton New York, Central Park in May 2002 along with the French restaurant, Atelier. In 2006 Laurent Tourondel took over the Atelier space on the corner of Sixth Avenue and Central Park South with BLT Market.

Earlier History

In 1928 the New York Athletic Club was moving into its new clubhouse, a 21 story structure on the East side of Seventh Avenue between 58th Street and Central Park South (where it remains today), and the Uris brothers (Harris and Percy) contracted to buy the old clubhouse at the corner of Sixth Avenue and Central Park South for $2,500,000. They planned to build a 35 story 900 room hotel at a cost of $10,000,000. The architect was Emery Roth. The hotel was to be managed by S. Gregory Taylor (born: Soterios Gregorios Tavoulares).

On November 1, 1928, Taylor opened the Montclair Hotel, between 49th and 50th streets on Lexington Avenue. It was designed by Emory Roth with a facade in Spanish style and built by the Harper organization. Taylor was president, Oscar W. Richardson, resident manager and Gaston Lauryssen, associate manager. Harris H. and Percy Uris were also the developers, and the mortgage was for $2,500,000.

In 1930 Taylor opened the Hotel St. Moritz, (named after St. Moritz, Switzerland) which had been under construction for two years, with great fanfare. The hotel was 38 stories with 1,000 rooms in units of one room to large suites, with many terrace apartments, and three penthouses. A dinner and dancing salon was on the 31st floor, with Omar Khayyam murals done by David Karfunkel, as well as commanding panoramic views of New York City. Emory Roth was the architect and Laurence Emmons designed the

With support from UNHCR, refugees in Botswana can now access ARVs

DUKWI, Botswana, May 25 (UNHCR) – Squealing with delight, young Elvis rushes off to greet his mother as she wends her way towards the family's hut in north-eastern Botswana's Dukwi refugee camp.

The Zimbabwean infant, aged almost three, is a picture of health. But one year ago, carrying the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), he was near death's door. Elvis could barely sit up. His body was wracked with opportunistic infections, including tuberculosis, and he was constantly in hospital for treatment.

The infection was passed on by his mother, Silibaziso, a former opposition activist who fled with her family to Botswana fearing physical harm after Zimbabwe's presidential and parliamentary elections in 2008. Knowing that her son needed antiretroviral (ARV) drugs to survive, she badgered UNHCR for help.

"I used to come to the UNHCR office every day and beg to be transferred to another refugee camp in the region, where Elvis could access ARVs," Silibaziso recalls. That was impossible because the government only allowed Botswanan citizens to receive antiretroviral treatment in a country that has the third highest rate of HIV infection in Africa, according to UN figures.

But the refugee agency repeatedly urged Botswana to change its policy and, thanks to this persistence, the government in April 2009 agreed to let UNHCR provide United States-backed programmes for HIV prevention and treatment targeting refugees.

The change in policy came just in time to save Elvis, but many others had died before they could get access to antiretroviral drugs, which can keep HIV infection in check and minimize opportunistic infections, thus helping to prolong life.

"On average, HIV-positive refugees were dying at the rate of four per month. It was a serious protection issue," explained Marcella Farelly-Rodriguez, a UNHCR protection officer based in Dukwi. Before the introduction of the new HIV programme in April last year, around two-thirds of all deaths in Dukwi between January and May were caused by AIDS.

Once the new government policy was announced, UNHCR held a meeting with the refugees in Dukwi and invited those seeking help to get in touch with UNHCR or staff from the agency's implementing partner, the Botswana Red Cross. "I was the first in line to get treatment for Elvis," Silibaziso Mpofu reveals.

The refugees at Dukwi can now go for voluntary HIV tests at the government-run health centre in the camp. If found positive, they receive counselling through the Botswana Red Cross. They are then transported to the Tati River clinic in Francistown, about 90 minutes away, for further tests and the free provision of ARV drugs if they need them.

So far, 200 refugees have registered with the programme, of whom 130 people require ARV treatment. A community-based Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission programme has also been launched in the settlement, along with other prevention campaigns.

"UNHCR advocates for refugees to be included in national HIV programmes and while ideally this is what UNHCR would like to have in Botswana, for now we are grateful that the government has allowed refugees to have access to treatment, even though it is through a parallel programme," said Gloria Puertas, UNHCR's senior regional HIV/AIDS coordinator.

Thembay Mguni, a Zimbabwean refugee who works with the Botswana Red Cross, said the number of people requesting testing "has gone up and the stigma of being HIV-positive is being reduced. Before, people would say why should we test, there is no medicine – but all that has changed."

Meanwhile, Elvis clings to his mother's skirt, as she turns to walk back toward the Botswana Red Cross office where she is a peer counsellor. She gently peels his hands away and puts him the care of her sister while she is at work. "I love you Elvis, I will be back soon, "she tells him, adding: "I am so grateful to the government of Botswana and UNHCR for getting him this treatment. I do not think he would be here now if it hadn't been available for much longer."

Botswana hosts more than 3,000 refugees in Dukwi, mainly from Zimbabwe, Namibia, Angola, Somalia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda and Burundi. The government provides education and health care in Dukwi.

Muscle Men of Mysore - KUSTI

Muscle Men of Mysore - KUSTI

Pahelwan Satich and Jaisimha

I was overwhelmed by their sheer dedication and meticulus practice they put in to save the dying sport. Each one of them had a different profession. Pahelwan Jaisimha was a banana vendor and Pahelwan Satish was a timber merchant. Satish did confess to me that it was not easy to take time off everyday and practice wrestling leaving noone behind to look after the business during his absence. They need time to practice and a good rest at noon. How can all this be possible having a different profession?

Muscle Men of Mysore - now wrestling to survive

Mystical Gods employed dhanurveda (archery) to vanquish the evil. Several years later we see bows and arrows as an exotic art. A sport with machismo. Kalarippayattu , Malla yuddha or Kushti (wrestling combat), vajra mushti (lightning fist) and many more were passed down several generations. Very few still view it as an honorable sport from the ancient times, from Ramayana and Mahabharata.

Long ago in Mysore, when the trendy gyms never existed, the royal kings were the key patrons of this form of sport. Wrestling or kusthi was thoroughly enjoyed by the people and the pahelwans were even recruited in the army.

Most of these garadis have common aesthetic charm in the way it was built. A shady pipal tree, a small portico for practice and a well are the signature features of any akhada or garadi. Earth, Air, water and trees form the soul of the garadi. The walls of the garadi are decorated with the bold, colorful paintings of Lord Hanuman, Garuda and other dramatic scenes from Hindu mythology. The garadi is essentially a shrine dedicated to Lord Hanuman or Anjaneya. He is looked upon the as the God of Courage and Physical Strength.

Mysore was once a city that housed over 100 garadis, but there are only about 40 remaining now in which a handful are actively involved in wrestling, Most of these crumble down to give way to modern gyms.

I was overwhelmed by their sheer dedication and meticulous practice they put in to save the dying sport. Each one of them had a different profession ranging from being a timber merchant, banana vendor, book binder etc. Wrestling matches have become rare events these days. There are no calendars marked with match dates but even then these muscle men devote time and patience towards the sport. However, due to the lack of patrons, their dedication is not being recognized.

All that these wrestlers ask for are regular bouts every month in order to sow the seeds of interest in the people towards the sport. They have invested their time and energy to save the sport from being driven into oblivion. It is about time that people like us give them their due credit before yet another tradition vanishes in thin air.

This is my attempt in reviving the original sport of India, Kushti.

Photo 15/365 - Dights Falls

Photo 15/365 - 15 January 2010.

Today feels like a milestone. Its the second half of January 2010 and I have so far managed to be on track everyday without major issues with motivations or ideas. I have pushed myself to explore different topics and be bolder with my compositions. Thank you for everyone who have invested their time in looking and commenting at my photos so far, they are absolutely invaluable to my growth as a photographer.

Taking advantage of a sunny day I went out at lunch time to take this shot. It was pretty bright out but I wasn't sure if I would have the time later today to get the job done. For most of the last 25 odd years I have driven past this spot pretty much every single day and yet I have never actually gone there to explore. Just this week I had a conversation with my manager about how he saw the sign for Dights Falls on his lunch time bike ride, and an idea was born.

Final shot is an HDR from six exposures, with the contrast level adjusted slightly in Photoshop. Again I have tried to keep the colours realistic and faithful to the eye.

A little history about Dights Falls from Wikipedia:
"Dights Falls is located in Melbourne, Victoria just downstream of the junction of the Yarra River with Merri Creek. At this point the river narrows and is constricted between 800,000 year old volcanic, basaltic lava flow and a much older steep, silurian, sedimentary spur. The north side also contains abundant graptolite fossils in sedimentary sandstone.

Prior to European settlement, the area was occupied by the indigenous Wurundjeri tribe of the Kulin nation. The rock falls would have provided the Aboriginal people with a natural river crossing and place to trap migrating fish. It was also a meeting place for many clans where they would trade together, settle disputes and exchange brides.

In the 1840s, an artificial weir was built on the natural bar of basalt boulders to provide water to the "Ceres" flour mill, one of the first in Victoria. Situated by the Yarra River in Collingwood is the industrial relic known locally as "Dight's Mill", one of Melbourne's oldest and most significant industrial sites. In the early 1840's John Dight established Melbourne's first water-powered flour mill on the site."

The Eiffel Tower (French: La Tour Eiffel, [tu? ?f?l], nickname La dame de fer, the iron lady) is a puddle iron lattice tower located on the Champ de Mars in Paris. Built in 1889, it has become both a global icon of France and one of the most recognizable structures in the world. The tower is the tallest building in Paris and the most-visited paid monument in the world; millions of people ascend it every year. Named for its designer, engineer Gustave Eiffel, the tower was built as the entrance arch to the 1889 World's Fair.
The tower stands 324 metres (1,063 ft) tall, about the same height as an 81-storey building. Upon its completion, it surpassed the Washington Monument to assume the title of tallest man-made structure in the world, a title it held for 41 years, until the Chrysler Building in New York City was built in 1930; however, due to the addition in 1957 of the antenna, the tower is now taller than the Chrysler Building. Not including broadcast antennas, it is the second-tallest structure in France after the 2004 Millau Viaduct.
The tower has three levels for visitors. Tickets can be purchased to ascend, by stairs or lift, to the first and second levels. The walk to the first level is over 300 steps, as is the walk from the first to the second level. The third and highest level is accessible only by elevator. Both the first and second levels feature restaurants.
The tower has become the most prominent symbol of both Paris and France, often in the establishing shot of films set in the city. (wiki)

Planetary Alignment on Garie Beach in the Southern Hemisphere

Planetary Alignment on Garie Beach in the Southern Hemisphere

This was taken just before 6am on the morning of 15th May from a beach in the National Park, where there is less incidental light. They are quite visible in Sydney, but the whole sky was lit up with skys and constellations. Great spot to take night photographs of the sky, if you arrive early enough that is !!! it was already getting light. Sunrise was at 6.15am

Heres the write up I already posted on my other photograph taken a few days earlier.. I hope to have a few more pictures of this, during the month. I have added to it

Star gazers have another grand celestial event to celebrate. The finest planetary conjunction of the year will happen on May 11 when Venus passes very close to the south of Jupiter. The two brightest planets on the sky will not get this close anytime before August 2014.
Beginning May 11, the four planets Mercury, Venus, Jupiter and Mars will rearrange themselves to form different patterns in the sky. This celestial spectacle can be easily seen through the naked eye. On May 13, Mercury, Venus and Jupiter will form a triangle and on May 20, it will be Mars, Venus, and Mercury in the triangular position.
Though two other planets, Uranus and Neptune, will also participate in this show in the sky, but viewing them will need the aid of a telescope.

It is a rare phenomenon when so many planets can be viewed at one time on one section of the sky.
The rare planetary conjunction will end on May 30, when a crescent Moon also joins the party.

The truly remarkable event - when Jupiter lines up with Venus, Mercury and Mars in the pre-dawn sky - will be visible in Australia's eastern sky this Friday. Its the closest Planetary grouping until 2040
The alignment of the four planets, which happens only once every 50 to 100 years, will occur just before sunrise, the Sydney Observatory says.
"Every couple of years you get two or three planets that come close together, but to have four is particularly rare," the observatory's education officer, Geoffrey Wyatt, said.
The last time Australians saw such a show was in 1910, and the next occasion would not be until 2056, Mr Wyatt said.
During the alignment, from 5am (AEST) on Friday, the four planets will be visible just above the horizon in the east.
Venus, in the middle of the group, will be the brightest. Just above and to the left will be Jupiter, while Mercury will be to the right of Jupiter and slightly fainter.
Early risers have already noticed Jupiter and Venus in the eastern sky before sunrise, Mr Wyatt said.
"It looks pretty much like two headlights coming towards you. We are getting lots of calls already saying there are two bright lights in the sky."
He wouldn't speculate on how the alignment might influence people, astrologically speaking.

Australia - Maori

Australia - Maori

decisamente affascinante. Non ci sono
dubbi: un viaggio in Australia sarebbe
largamente incompleto senza un
approfondimento sulla cultura aborigena e sulle tradizioni millenarie di un popolo che non ha eguali al mondo.

Long-Range Public Investment: The Forgotten Legacy of the New Deal (Social Problems and Social Issues (Univ of South Carolina))

Long-Range Public Investment: The Forgotten Legacy of the New Deal (Social Problems and Social Issues (Univ of South Carolina))

In this comprehensive survey combining architectural and social policy studies, Robert D. Leighninger Jr. reappraises the enduring achievements of public investment during the New Deal era. Leighninger argues that, though these initiatives produced the lasting backbone of the U.S. physical and cultural infrastructure, the value of these long-range investments is now being forgotten. In response Leighninger systematically assesses the schools, housing, bridges, roads, power plants, courthouses, hospitals, museums, stadiums, zoos, parks, and other public facilities built under the auspices of the New Deal. Many of the structures are still in use today.
Although a multitude of studies have focused on specific agencies, Leighninger offers an exhaustive survey of all the building agencies established as part of the New Deal. In addition to reviewing the large- and small-scale objectives of such operations as the Public Works Administration, Civilian Conservation Corps, Works Progress Administration, and Tennessee Valley Authority, Leighninger applies the New Deal experience to current public policy issues. He evaluates the impact of public works on stimulating the economy, the role of public jobs in a national employment policy, the means of financing infrastructure, and the paradox of viewing public works as "pork."
Leighninger concludes that the physical accomplishments of the New Deal have served as the core of the U.S. education, health, recreation, transportation, justice, and civic administration facilities for decades. These findings, he contends, will not only remind current generations of their indebtedness to the New Deal programs but also spark renewed debate about the long-range implications of public works versus pork barrel politics.
Long-Range Public Investment: The Forgotten Legacy of the New Deal is augmented by fifty-eight photographs.

Art of the Deal: Contemporary Art in a Global Financial Market

Art today is defined by its relationship to money as never before. Prices of living artists' works have been driven to unprecedented heights, conventional boundaries within the art world have collapsed, and artists now think ever more strategically about how to advance their careers. Artists no longer simply make art, but package, sell, and brand it.
Noah Horowitz exposes the inner workings of the contemporary art market, explaining how this unique economy came to be, how it works, and where it's headed. He takes a unique look at the globalization of the art world and the changing face of the business, offering the clearest analysis yet of how investors speculate in the market and how emerging art forms such as video and installation have been drawn into the commercial sphere.
By carefully examining these developments against the backdrop of the deflation of the contemporary art bubble in 2008, Art of the Deal is a must-read book that demystifies collecting and investing in today's art market.

Growing Old in China

Growing Old in China

An elderly couple sit on excercise equipment at the Mingshen Nursing Home in Northern Shanghai, which opened in 1999. This facility has about 350 beds, and there are already 327 residents. They pay an average of about US$100 per month to stay there. Some residents pay more for extra services or comfort. The old age home is run by Zhang Minsheng who also runs two other similar operations in southern China, Hainan Island and Shenzhen. Growing old is becoming big business in China as the country is facing a crisis with their rapidly aging population. The problem is significantly worse than the aging baby boom generation in Europe and North America. Chinais One Child Policy has added to this problem as the burden of elderly parents is planted squarely on the shoulders of an only child.

Springfield Armory

Springfield Armory

Springfield Armory (1777-1968): Being close to major highways as well as the Connecticut River, but far enough upstream to be safe from enemy attack, Springfield in central MA was chosen by President George Washington as the site to locate an arsenal for manufacture of weapons for the American Revolution.

Prior to the Civil War, however, the Armory also played a central role in the Industrial Revolution. But for two centuries subsequent, the Armory was an important place for the development and manufacture of arms for American soldiers. In 1968 though, as a controversial economic measure, the Defense Department closed the Armory.

Now it remains as the Springfield Armory National Historic Site, a museum run by the National Park Service. Some of the old Armory buildings have also been taken over by Springfield Technical Community College.

Springfield Bridge

Springfield Bridge

One last shot of the old Springfield Bridge, which is the oldest vehicluar bridge in the state of Arkansas. It was built back in 1874, and served traffic until 1991. It was replaced with a new bridge that sits 400 feet upstream. Since then, the wooden beams have disappeared or rotten away.

It would be nice to see the bridge preserved, maybe turned into some sort of small park. Something needs to be done about a large dead tree, which can be seen to the right of the bridge in this shot. The tree is leaning a bit, and will probably topple over sometime. When it does, it looks like it would probably hit the bridge, no doubt causing heavy damage in the process.

The Springfield Bridge crosses Cadron Creek along the border between Faulkner and Conway County, in central Arkansas.
