Springfield Armory
Springfield Armory (1777-1968): Being close to major highways as well as the Connecticut River, but far enough upstream to be safe from enemy attack, Springfield in central MA was chosen by President George Washington as the site to locate an arsenal for manufacture of weapons for the American Revolution.
Prior to the Civil War, however, the Armory also played a central role in the Industrial Revolution. But for two centuries subsequent, the Armory was an important place for the development and manufacture of arms for American soldiers. In 1968 though, as a controversial economic measure, the Defense Department closed the Armory.
Now it remains as the Springfield Armory National Historic Site, a museum run by the National Park Service. Some of the old Armory buildings have also been taken over by Springfield Technical Community College.
Springfield Bridge
One last shot of the old Springfield Bridge, which is the oldest vehicluar bridge in the state of Arkansas. It was built back in 1874, and served traffic until 1991. It was replaced with a new bridge that sits 400 feet upstream. Since then, the wooden beams have disappeared or rotten away.
It would be nice to see the bridge preserved, maybe turned into some sort of small park. Something needs to be done about a large dead tree, which can be seen to the right of the bridge in this shot. The tree is leaning a bit, and will probably topple over sometime. When it does, it looks like it would probably hit the bridge, no doubt causing heavy damage in the process.
The Springfield Bridge crosses Cadron Creek along the border between Faulkner and Conway County, in central Arkansas.
