The top case is where my main meter should be. I was feeling a little weird as I was walking to the bus stop to come home from work tonight. When I got on the bus I pulled out my meter to check, but the case was empty. I know I had the kit on my desk at work and I'm guessing the meter slid out when I picked up the case, but I think I would have noticed that. It wasn't a big deal because I had my backup meter in my bag. At first I thought it was silly to have two meters in my bag all the time but I've had to use my backup a bunch of times, especially the last two weeks for some reason. I've been leaving my main meter on the kitchen table or my desk at work, but I've always left the whole kit behind. The meter itself has never gone missing until now.

I thought I felt low but was actually high, 189. This is why I always test and never trust my body.

I paid for my original UltraSmart because I could not get Lifescan to send me a free one when they came out. I found the best price online and I did get most of my money back through the rebate + trade in, but it always annoyed me that they wouldn't send me a freebie after I'd been a customer for years.

I did get a free UltraSmart from them sometime this year. I think they offered it to Minimed pump users when BD announced they would no longer be making meters.

Some meters, like the UltraSmart, can cost quite a bit if you actually have to buy one but you can get most of the money back by filling out a rebate form and sending them an old BG meter. In the days when meter companies actually included some strips with each meter many people would buy meters often just to get the 10-25 test strips. You could get all of your money back through the rebate/trade in. I'm guessing that's why you rarely get any strips with meters now.

Day 62 - First time plasma donator

I had the very interesting experience today of donating blood plasma for the first time ever today.

It is a very interesting process that they use to draw the blood and separate the plasma out of it, ultimately returning the blood right back to your body through the same tube that they drew it out with. You repeat this process 5-7 times for about an hour, until the correct amount of plasma has been drawn.

Then, when it is all done, they take a bag of saline solution and pump it back into your arm so that you don't get too dehydrated (because plasma is mainly water). It's pretty crazy because the saline is room temp, so when they put it back in your body; your arm gets CRAZY cold. It just kept getting colder and colder. I was kinda stressed that it was going to get brutally painfully cold; but fortunately, it never got that bad and I "survived"!!

And then when you are completely finished, they give you a 20 dollar prepaid cash card to reimburse you for your time. The entire process endd up taking about 1-1.5 hours, so I don't think they would really get a lot of people if there wasn't some sort of cash reimbursement. I am planning to do this pretty regularly over the next couple months, as I am trying to save up money for a new camera.

Amazingly, the nurse told me that they will process through about 400 or so people on a "medium" busy day; which is just a ton of people and a lot of plasma! From what I hear, it takes a whole lot of plasma to make the various medical treatments that they use the plasm for; so that is why they need to draw so much plasma each day. So even though I am making a little money on the side, it also feels good to be helping people out by providing plasma that they need to make various medicines and medical treatments.

Davies’ FG4 on track for 2,000 retail outlets despite unrest in region

George Davies is confident his retail ventures into Saudi Arabia will not be disrupted by tensions in the surrounding regions.

Sports Direct staff eye Ł44,000 bonuses

Ahead of its annual profit report, Sports Direct has told thousands of employees to expect a bonus worth an average ?44,000 each if the value sportswear chain meets profit targets.

Around 2,000 members of staff that have worked at the chain for more than two years will be given 125p shares worth 75 percent of their salary. Added to this is a bonus of 25 percent of salary last year, bringing each pay out to ?44,370 at Friday’s closing share price of 261p, making it one of the most generous bonuses on the high street. Staff can cash in the shares after July 2012.

The scheme, which is the brainchild of Sports Direct founder Mike Ashley was put in place to help improve the chain’s trading performance two years ago. At the time an average bonus was worth ?25,000, as the company’s shares traded at less than a ?1.

Sports Direct chief executive David Forsey has said the scheme is a significant contributor to Sports Direct’s improved performance, and that is would be extended to cover 2012 and 2013.

The retailer, which owns more than 400 shops is expected this week to announce year-on-year profits up at least 20 percent before charges and the bonus payouts.

Morrisons targets Iceland in expansion bid

Morrisons has its sights set on Iceland as part of an aggressive expansion plan.

According to The Independent, Morrisons is "aggressively outbidding its rivals" to secure new stores, mainly in the south of England.

The Bradford-based grocer has demonstrated a renewed determination to stand as a formidable competitor to the likes of Tesco and Asda since Dalton Phillips joined the company as chief executive in March 2010. Buying Iceland, which made profits of ?184.2 million on sales of ?2.2 billion last year, would be the most aggressive move yet made by Phillips who was also the driving force behind the acquisition of kiddicare.com and the purchase of a 10 percent stake in New York-based online grocer Fresh Direct.

There is no specific word on the extent of Morrisons’ ambitions but it was one of the first companies to be linked to the proposed sale of a majority stake in Iceland later this year. The food retailer is not the only business to show an interest in Iceland; Sainsbury’s, Asda, Apax, Lion Capital and BC Partners are also understood to be interested.

My life is filled with rage lately. I am consumed with hate. I hold everyone and everything in contempt yet I have no one and nothing to curse for what I feel. I've never been one to believe in a higher power. Does that make me an atheist, agnostic, or just another loner looking for something more in this dismal existence? It doesn't even matter anymore, it'll all be over soon. I've been driving for what seems like days, with no discernable destination, a true metaphor of my life; aimless, pointless, and completely directionless. I don't know when or where I'll decide to finally end it so I'll just keep driving until it feels.. correct. The red glow from my dash tells me I'll need to refuel again and I'm realizing I should have considered that before I entered this seemingly endless flatland of dirt and wheat fields. Incredibly, I see a small gas station coming up in the distance and immediately think, this is the type of mirage a man crawling through the desert would have, if he was carrying a gas can.

As I pull up to the pump I notice there's nobody inside the station, in fact, it looks as if it had been abandoned recently and quickly; lights on, doors open... hot dogs sweating as they spin on the ferris wheel of meat . I consider the possibility that the locals actually operate on the honor system and this is just standard procedure. Could there still be that level of trust and respect left on this planet? It's a ridiculous notion and I dismiss it quickly, but I need fuel whether anyone's here or not. Predictably, the pumps are not working and for all my years of learning and experience I cannot deduce how to make them operational. How fitting that now, of all times, I feel regret for having treated gas station employees like trained monkeys. I recline against my now near useless vehicle and ponder my options. I could just continue driving until my forward progress would be dictated by a defunct engine. I could just sit here and wait, hoping that someone eventually returns and brings with them the NASA launch codes needed to make these damned pumps functional or I could just accept the fact that this is the sign I've been waiting for. I had no final destination, but now, one seems to have been chosen for me. I had no reason to even be here at all, yet now, I can't even leave.

I light a cigarette and inhale deep. The smoke spinning and curling from my nose as I exhale and stare across the road at the horizon reaching field of wheat. I watch as the wind creates an invisible hand that strokes gently across the tops of each rustling stalk when it occurs to me that I've never actually seen a wheat field, in person, before. The endless undulations of the wheat remind me of the oceans back east that seem so very mundane to me now. I wonder if people first see the ocean and marvel at it, the way I am now, while staring at nothing more than a plot of earth full of weeds. I step out my cigarette as I walk across the smooth asphalt and descend onto the soft soil. My hands out to my sides, palms open allowing the raspy husks to brush against me as I walk deeper into the field. It appears as though a storm is brewing in the distance and the winds are beginning to stiffen here, the gusts causing me to sway slightly as if I were just another stalk rooted in the soil. There’s an unusually calming effect washing over me as I close my eyes and just listen. The winds roaring low around me, the flapping of my clothes as they plaster against my body, and the chatter of the wheat as the husks rattle defiantly against the coming deluge. Most noticeable is the understated silence that comes and goes as the winds stop momentarily, deceiving me into thinking I’m frozen in time for those brief seconds. I inhale a deep cleansing breath and realize; it feels.. correct. I’m more at peace with myself now, in these past few minutes, than I have been my entire life, and I’m ready.

A rusted hulking mass of steel rests in the distance further into the field. As I move towards it, I consider the fact that while it makes no sense for this locomotive to be here, no visible tracks anywhere in the vicinity and no logical reason for putting it here purposefully, it looks absolutely normal as if it were just meant to be. I climb up the side, struggling to get to the top as chips of paint give way under my intrusive touch. I can feel the dull metal still holding the warmth of the day’s sun even as the winds bring a chill to evening air. I stand, surveying my surroundings, not impressed with its beauty but instead by its serenity. I reach to my back and retrieve the oiled steel object that’s been lodged so uncomfortably in my spine. A quick movement of the slide and the sharp clack as the bullet slides into its loaded position. I place the barrel against my temple realizing there’s nothing to say, no epiphanies to be had, I said my goodbyes days ago and no one listened. Nothing left but to finger the

A Rose Between Two Thorns!

Well where do we start with what was a cracking day!

The morning started early, as me, Mark and Jeff met outside my house at 4am. A quick trip to the yard, for a 4.30 departure with James VR (EWS 739), to pick up the rest of our little entourage at Bristol Parkway (8 people in total!).

We managed to get away from Parkway for 05.30 and made the long slog up the M5/M6 with several stops at service stations to check the Oil & Water, finally arriving at Reliance Bus Works in Newcastle-Under-Lyme. Just in time for the Breakfast order to be taken by the Boss, who believe it or not is not Mr H, but his daughter Laura, the brains and organisation behind RBW ;-).

I finally got my first taste of “Staffordshire Oat Cakes”, and I must say I was really impressed and may now have to try and find some of these treats. Everyone indulged themselves with an Oat Cake or three, and we all ate Al Fresco on top of the Deltabus (Fellow Flickrite), Open Top POPS VR GBF78N.

Then it was “Tiger Time”, and Martyn very kindly attached my new front “Leyland” trims and Leyland scrolls on the front and rear. Mark Amis and Stuart Curwen (SWPG Members) took off the old legals, school signs and other vinyl’s attached to glass. It was then time to put on the National Express Destination, shake lots of hands and say our goodbye’s before the long but satisfying ride home.

To say that I was like a “Cat with the Cream” (Sorry for the Pun), would be an understatement. FRU is very sluggish off the mark, and does need a lot of work on the Interior, Exterior and probably needs a new or recon fuel pump and gearbox, but when you wind her she drives like the wind, although being a Leyland Advanced Notice is required for Braking (LOL).

Worm bucket

The water is trickling into the elasticized poly-felt top I made for the worm bin bucket. It looks nice, but I have since taken it off because I found a folded newspaper on top works just as well to shade the worms and it is easier to lift up to feed the worms. The green stuff floating the water is duckweed and there is a tomato and a basil plant immersed in the red basin. The water pump is immersed on the left.

Experimental vermiponics flow-through system. A solar-powered pump pulls water up to the top planter from the red basin below. Hydroponic tubing trickles the water into the buckets below, until reaching the grey bucket near the bottom, which contains about 1.5 pounds of red wiggler composting worms. Small holes in that bucket let the water fall back down into the red basin, which contains a few guppies to eat mosquito larvae. I don't feed them, but I do put kitchen scraps and rabbit poo into the top of the grey bucket holding the worms.

Written Monday, 11/3/08, at 4:30pm:

I'm on my boat, sopping wet and shivering and trying to stop my heart from racing.

Here's what happened.

A few hours ago I hobbled off to go take a shit. (I was literally hobbling because i ran a half marathon yesterday, and I'm sore as hell). I had on a hat and a hoodie with the hood up and a jacket with a hood, and with the driving wind/rain I put my head down and limped there. I wonder, now, if I hadn't had so many hoods on if I'd have noticed anything sooner.

On the way out of the restroom (which is about 50 yards from the docks), I saw a guy in a red jacket throw something in the trash, and then I looked toward the boats, where I saw a bright orange flame. It was so incongruous in the heavy rain, so not-supposed-to-be-there, that without thinking I sprinted towards the marina. As I ran i pulled out my cell phone and called 911, and then I realized the flames were coming from somewhere very close to our boat. Oh shit. I hoped not. How could... Oh shit. Oh shit. My heart pounded. (I only now just realized that I was able to run, and how fast I ran. Adrenaline is an amazing thing.)

The boat that was burning was two boats to the north of mine, owned by the nicest guy in the world, named (_deleted_). He always stopped by to chat, and regularly shared ice cream with me. Apparently he had left his boat about 45 minutes earlier.

I did not know this as I ran to the boat. All I knew was that I needed to grab a hose and start putting out the fire. The fire was so scary that I don't think I felt any relief that my own boat wasn't burning. It's like there was no room to think of that. There were four or five of us, everyone dressed up in full rain gear, in the pouring rain, spraying water into, onto, and through every bit of the burning boat. Half the windows had shattered from the fire, and smoke was slinking out of every hole. I heard that the canvas on the boat to the south -- the one between the burning boat and this one - was steaming from the heat of the fire.

One doessn't usually associate spraying a hose with adrenaline, but so be it. I worried that maybe the gas tank would catch fire/explode... but there was so much water getting spayed in that it seemed unlikely. One guy was standing on the foredeck, spraying water into the cabin. He didn't seem worried.

I heard fire engines in the distance, and within minutes a crew of firemen arrived. I ran over to my boat and grabbed my video camera, then followed them towards the charred boat. There may be no sadder picture in the world than a fireman with an axe chopping through charred remains on a boat floating in the water. It is devastating. I saw as the firemen poked through stacks of magazines, credit card bills, clothes, and mostly unidentifiable black remains.

Worse, the boat owner's elderly dog was aboard, and died in the fire. She had arthritis and a bad hip, and couldn't jump up onto or down from the boat, The owner always used to do this very funny/patient routine in which he acted as a little dog elevator at the front of the deck. I saw the dog's body in the stern of the boat, one short, impossible jump from safety. To die in a fire is a god-awful thing.

There is, actually, a sadder picture in the world than a burnt boat, and that's watching the owner of the boat arrive on the scene to discover that his house, possessions, and beloved dog are all gone. He came running up the dock in jeans and a flannel shirt. Nobody made eye contact. I turned off my video camera. By now there were only a few of standing around, because after I'd said "I don't think i want to be here to see the owner arrive," most of the others, out of a dozen, retreated humbly to their own boats. This was a smart, if not courageous, move. I stood there in the rain, and saw him break down in despair after he peaked in and saw his dog's body. Someone gave him a towel to keep dry, and someone else held an umbrella over him, and someone else put an arm around him, while it continued to pour. He sobbed, put his hands to his head, asked someone to please cover his dog, fell to his knees... while the police inspector tried, as professionally as possible, to inquire about the circumstances of the fire. At the same time, one of the firefighters asked us if we knew anything about power boats, because he was searching for the batteries on the boat to no avail (i think most everything burnt).

I heard the owner say that he had left nothing on, no power, no stove, no flames or anything - so I wonder if the cause of the fire will be determined, of if the boat is too much of a wreck to make any sense of.

My heart is still pumping. My pants and hat are soaked and I'm shivering. I imagine the dozen or so people who ran to help out are in the same condition; terrified yet grateful, and in no need of thanks because they know that's just what you do: you help out.

Ferry Leaving Mahon

M/S Meloodia is a passenger ferry owned by the Estonian ferry company Tallink, currently under charter to Balearia, Spain for service between Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca. She was built in 1979 by Meyer Werft, Papenburg, Germany as M/S Diana II for Rederi AB Slite for use in Viking Line's traffic.

History
Diana II (originally Diana II av Slite) was built at Meyer Werft, Papenburg, Germany. The same shipyards had previously built several ships for various Viking Line partner companies, and was at the time same building M/S Viking Sally for Rederi ab Sally. M/S Viking Sally would later became infamous as the M/S Estonia. Contrary to the popular belief the Diana II and Viking Sally were not sister ships, although they did share some technical innovations, including the bow visor construction. In essence the Diana II was an enlarged version of six near-identical ships (often referred to as the Papenburg Sisters) Meyer Werft had built for Slite and Sally for Viking Line services in the early 70's (whereas the Viking Sally was a new design).

Initially the Diana II was placed on Viking Line's Turku - Mariehamn - Stockholm service, but in June 1980 when the Viking Sally was delivered, she was moved to the Naantali - Mariehamn - Kapellskar route, where she served for the remainder of her Viking Line career. On 5 February 1989 Diana II touched ground near Kappelskar and started taking in water. Due to her pumping system operating only on half capacity the ship took in a lot of water and partially sunk on the shallow harbour of Kapellskar. She was soon refloated and docked for repairs. In 1989 the ship was also sold to PK Finans in Sweden, who chartered her back to Slite.

In 1992 Slite decided to terminate their part of the Naantali - Kapellskar service (SF Line continued operating the route until 1999), and the Diana II was chartered to TT-Line for their TR-Line service between Trelleborg and Rostock. During a trip in particularly bad weather on 13 January 1993, Diana II's bow visor war very nearly torn off by the waves. In September 1994 the ship was sold to Nordstrom & Thulin, Sweden, and renamed M/S Vironia. She was to be used alongside her old fleetmate M/S Estonia on Estline's Tallinn - Stockholm service. However, the Estonia sunk during the same month. As a result the Vironia was renamed Mare Balticum (to avoid association with the sunken ship due to the similar name) and docked in Naantali where her bow visor was welded shut. Her funnel, which had been somewhat problematic before, was also rebuilt. In November 1994 she could finally begin trafficking on the Tallinn - Stockholm route.

June 1996 Estline purchased a larger ship to replace the Mare Balticum on the Tallinn - Stockholm service, and the latter was chartered to Tallink (the new ship was incidentally Mare Balticum's former Viking Line fleetmate M/S Regina Baltica). After being rebuilt at Naantali with a bow gate, the newly renamed M/S Meloodia begun service on Tallink's Helsinki - Tallinn route in September 1996. Tallink had organised a naming competition for their new ferry, but when the most popular suggested name was M/S Estonia II, the competition results were ignored.

In 2002 Tallink purchased the Meloodia, but her route remained unaltered. In preparation for delivery of the new fast ferry M/S Star in April 2007, the Meloodia was chartered to the Spanish shipping company Balearia in January 2007, for traffic between the Balearic Islands and Spanish mainland. Initially she was set in traffic between Barcelona and Mahon, Ibiza, and from February onwards between Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca.

the lake freezes over in the winter, so they pump geothermal hot water into certain parts of it to maintain the habitat for aquatic birds. so so many aquatic birds!! eek!
