Owl's eyes cliff dwellings

Owl's eyes cliff dwellings

The 1892 Moorehead expedition lowered themselves down by a rope, which was secured to a bush, to reach these ruins. They named the ruins and collected artifacts for the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago.

The "Owl's eyes" is what I am calling them and not the proper name given to them by the Moorehead group.

MOOREHEAD’S 1892 ILLUSTRATED AMERICAN EXPLORING EXPEDITION

In 1892 an expedition, with an unusual name the “Illustrated American Exploring Expedition [IAEE]”, visited this site and a hundred others in Colorado and Utah.

The five member expedition was led by Warren K. Moorehead, who had worked as an archaeologist at the Smithsonian Institute. Members of the team included a geologist; artist; entomologist; and a surveyor & mapmaker.

I had never heard of Moorehead or his expedition until I found the name and date of the expedition at a site named by them, called Monarch Cave ruins. The initials were neatly carved into a sandstone wall at that site.

American Illustrated was a magazine and the idea for the expedition was to find evidence for the “lost tribe” in order to publish a lead article in the magazine about same and to collect artifacts (pot hunting) for the upcoming 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago.

(note: if you have never read the national bestselling book: The Devil in the White City” by Erik Larson, you would enjoy it. A true page turner).

It seems that everywhere I go these days, Moorehead and his team had been in 1892. They did work at Hovenweep, McElmo Creek and all over Cedar Mesa. Many of the sites in the area were named by this expedition.

In the end the magazine went broke, leaving Moorehead holding the bag on some of the expedition expenses, but at least the artifacts they collected, were preserved (if not in context) to be enjoyed by others in museums, rather than in the living room of some wealthy, now illegal, “pot hunter’.

PDA: PLEASE DON’T ASK. I asked for some help finding a couple of the cliff dwellings and Ancient Puebloan rock art panels which my wife and I hiked to and photographed on this day. I promised those who helped me that I would not be specific as to their exact location. I intend to honor those promises.

If you recognize any of the sites from my photographs, please don’t reveal the locations in your comments. Do as you like on your Flickr photo site, but please honor my request on my Flickr site.

CEDAR MESA ROAD TRIP 17-26TH APRIL 2011 ~ Mr. & Mrs. Oldmantravels

In all we spent ten days and nine nights on the road, camping in the back of our pickup truck two nights, sleeping in our backpacking tent in Grand Gulch, and the other six nights luxuriating in the comforts of a motel room. Gas prices ranged from a low of $3.56 a gallon to $3.89, which was the highest we paid on this trip. We saw several $4.00 a gallon signs along the way.

Our figure 8 route took us through portions of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Colorado, and Nevada. We drove a couple of roads we had never traveled; met some truly wonderful people; took many interesting day hikes to places we had never been, and tried out some new internal frame backpacks on a short backpacking trip into Grand Gulch.

Most of our activity, and time spent, was centered around the Cedar Mesa area of Southeastern Utah. Though the weather forecast did not look favorable for the first portion of our time in Utah, it turned out fine. It wasn’t until the return portion of our road trip, where we ran into several storms (thunder and lightening storms, a nasty hail storm, and a few snow storms thrown in).

If any of you are interested, in for whatever reason on following the travel portion of our road trip, you can connect these dots to form the figure 8 route we traveled, from start to finish: Home in Eastern Washington; Pendleton; Boise; Salt Lake City; Spanish Fork; Price; Green River; Hanksville; Natural Bridges National Monument; Blanding; [several days spent in the Cedar Mesa area]; Moab; Cisco; Mack; Rangely; Dinosaur; Vernal; Duchesne; Heber City; Salt Lake City; Wendover; Elko; Lamoille; Mountain City; Owyhee; Mountain Home; Boise; Pendleton; & home.

2.Tuesday 19th April 2011
I was in for quite the surprise when I threw the canopy rear window open. Snow! Not much but our windshield was frozen solid with a coating of thick ice and snow. I had almost left our ice scraper at home, but was glad we now had it with us.

The sun was starting to come out as we drove out of our camp past a large group of young people, who had camped in floorless tents the night before. They were standing out in the sage brush bundled up in every garment they had with them. Their sleeping bags and tents were draped over the sage, while they and their gear tried to dry out with th

Utility, community, and art

Utility, community, and art

I love everything this sandstone shelf of metates say. I can hear the sound of precious corn being grown for consumption and storage for winter's use. I can hear the community talk going on with the sound of the corn being ground, providing the background. Kids would be shouting and playing in the canyon alcove. Life.

Then there is the artwork. It looks like a "caribou" petroglyph to me, but here at a work station, somebody saw the need or desire to decorate the place with some "art". This place makes a connection with me.

NOTE: The visitors who places the ancient corn cobs in the metates may be well intentioned, but it is the wrong to do. Any artifacts of any kind, once moved (or worse yet..stolen) take away part of the important information that can be gained by scientists, when the material remains in place and in "context".

The small underfunded 1892 Moorehead expedition visited these ruins, collected artifacts here, and left their initials here. They named these ruins. I am calling them the "metate row" ruins to honor a promise.

I have been using the last half of 2010 to build my glamour portrait portfolio in the hopes to push into that area of business in 2011.

I am always looking for new models to work with and my good friend, Erin, who has done some modeling in the past, was more than willing to help out. I asked her if she had any special outfits she had been wanting to try out and she came up with this number. It definitely adds something new and different to my normal set of images.

With this outfit, I knew we had to go someplace urban and the Peoria Warehouse District is always good for some grungy alleys and backdrops.

Herman Ridder Junior High School (PS 98)

Herman Ridder Junior High School (PS 98)

Herman Riddle Junior High School, Boston Road, Crotona Park

Summary

Herman Ridder Junior High School, Public School 98, the Bronx, was the first thoroughly "modernistic" Art Deco style public school building in New York City and the first junior high school to depart in design from a modification of a standard elementary school plan. Designed by the Board of Education's Bureau of Design and Construction, headed by Walter C. Martin as Superintendent of School Buildings, and built in 1929-31, the school was one of the first projects to result from a program initiated in 1927 to erect facilities designed specifically for junior high programs, which prior to this time had been housed in elementary school buildings. The striking design of Herman Ridder Junior High School is representative of the initial phase of American academic modernism in which the Art Deco style influenced both plan-generated massing and modernistic ornamentation of school designs.

Several Art Deco elements characteristic of contemporary commercial and industrial buildings were employed in the design, including an entrance tower modeled as a set-back skyscraper, structural emphasis in the pier and window treatment of the classroom facades, and a lively roof line with cresting and pedimented parapets, as well as Art Deco style ornament.

The school is "identified" by an extensive iconographic program of academic symbols and exceptional modernistic sculptural figures on the tower. Named for the prominent publisher and philanthropist, Herman Ridder Junior High School exemplifies the union of modernistic trends in architecture and progressive educational ideals, resulting in a civic monument symbolizing hope and achievement.

The Development of the Morrisania Section of the Bronx
The Herman Ridder Junior High School is located in the Morrisania section of the Bronx at the southeastern edge of Crotona Park, an area, like the rest of the Bronx, which remained essentially rural until the turn of the century.

Morrisania, named for the British Army officer Colonel Lewis Morris who owned land in the area in the Revolutionary War era, was first settled by two groups of immigrants in the mid-nineteenth century; a group of Irish who worked on the construction of the Harlem and Hudson River Railroads settled in the area in the early 1840s, soon followed by a large number of German immigrants. The German-American population of the area continued to grow, and by the late-nineteenth century, Morrisania had become predominantly German.

The urbanization of the Bronx followed annexation to the City of New York in 1874 and the subsequent improvement of transportation between the Bronx and Manhattan. The expansion of elevated train lines, particularly the completion of the IRT subway system to West Farms Square just north of Morrisania in 1904, prompted real estate speculation and development, and, ultimately, increases in population in the Morrisania section, and the Bronx as a whole.

During the 1920s there was a tremendous housing boom in the Bronx accompanied by a corresponding increase in population; only the Depression slowed the explosive growth of the borough. The 1930 census documented the 72.8 percent increase in population during the previous decade, and revealed the Crotona Park area to be the geographical center of population in the Bronx. Mirroring this growth, the number of school-age children in the borough increased by 44 percent between 1918 and 1928. During the 1920s thirty-nine elementary and junior high schools and four high schools were erected in the Bronx, as well as additions to nineteen existing buildings.

A Model Junior High School for the Bronx

The construction of the Herman Ridder Junior High School documents the commitment of the New York City Board of Education to expanding the system of junior high schools in the late 1920s. The junior high school concept had developed in New York City in tandem with the movement in the rest of the United States to better address the educational needs of young teenagers in preparation for their high school years or entrance into the workforce. Junior high schools, known as intermediate schools prior to 1922, were established in New York City during the 1910s, including three in the Bronx; these were begun as experimental departments in elementary school buildings. The number of junior high programs in New York City increased considerably around 1920 as the idea became accepted.

As the 1920s progressed, it became clear to educators that junior high schools should be located in separate, specially-designed school buildings. The standard three curricula — academic, commercial, and industrial — and the athletic and music programs required specialized classrooms and equipment. In 1927 the New York City Board of Education initiated a junior

high school construction program to provide these facilities.

The first group of junior high schools to be erected included Public S

I dunno...but the world and it's truth is far more complicated then what we're taught, and you have to separate the things that really are true from the bullshit the Church and the Military feeds the public to hold our culture together. Don't get me wrong, I still love Regentum, even after all these years. I believe in a God, but not the church or the Emperor. What's important to me about Regentum is that it's perhaps the only place in the world where a common, regular person can receive the benefits of their own hard work. Everywhere I've ever been I've only seen masters and servants. The Dwarves are good to one another, perhaps even better then we in Regentum are. But in Rolheim the Dwarves have a very set and rigid way of life. You're stuck in the position you're born into, but no Dwarf suffers or is destitute. Here in Regentum if you're born poor you can do something about it. Other Human nations that aren't our Colonies, forget it. That's why so many foreigners become Pirates. It's better to be a Pirate then the serf of some Sultan in Lu' Hadej, toil the years by on a Brenendale fishing ship, live under constant war in the mess of Alson, or slave away under some Monk in Nijiro.

After I got out of the Army like a lot of guys I was pretty jaded with all the shit talking about conquering the world for light and law and all that sort of talk. Our leaders fight for money and power and cull troops from the ranks of our working poor after getting them hyped up on religion. I mean look, they take these kids, they start at age fifteen, and all these boys are either from farming villages, or some industrial slum. You take a kid like that who hasn't got much of a future and you tell him that he'll be trained to fight for holy order, and that he will be special, that he will individually play a vital role in shaping the future of the empire and he buys it. Like me and yours Pops. We knew it was either the army, the docks, the factories or jail. It's ugly that it takes a large degree of smoke and mirrors to hold Regentum together, but its better then everywhere else out there.

Anyhow after Damu and I took out that Goblin leader Ertu we were in good standing with the Military as skilled mercenaries who were good at eliminating specific targets that were loose ends they needed cleaned up. It took those motherfuckers less then a month before I got a knock at the door from a Army courier with a new bounty contract in one hand, and a sack of gold in the other. I hadn't even yet spent all my money from before.

I was told that the Military needed a new way to send food supplies to all the troops the world over because the cost of doing so was getting too high due to the sheer number of troops we now how have the world over. Traditionally the food either came from local sources, or was shipped in by merchants with government contracts. The Military hired Wizard-Engineers to design a new system of providing troops with enough food in a cheaper way. So they applied the idea of the factory to the slaughter house. Along the road way between Salsburg and Fieldsview a big warehouse was built in which cattle was slaughtered in mass by huge killing machines and the meat cured, salted and prepped for shipping.

Some Druid freaked out about this place and attacked it. Around this time the Army was routing out a large strike force of the Derago Tribe of Hobgoblins. The Deragos' got their asses handed to them and broke up into a bunch of small rag-tag units. The Druid trashed the place pretty good, and the report in my contract didn't mention as to what happened to the Druid or who he was. Troops, Engineers, Craftsman and supply laden Merchants were quickly sent in to get the Meat Factory up and running. All of these sitting ducks alone along the highway caught the eye of a squad of Derago Hobgoblins who in turn decided to take their own stab at the meat factory. We were asked to find the leader of the Squad, a Hobgoblin named Jahghu Khazul and kill him. The Army in the area was still busy chasing down the bulk of the Derago forces, and had them pinned way up north almost to Rolhiem.

This time around we bought our own wagon and horse rather then catching a ride with a caravan. A nice light brown horse I never got the chance to name or get attached to. Bristol & District Co-operative Society

Bristol & District Co-operative Society

The first Co-operative Society to keep a shop running was the Bedminster one, which opened in West Street in 1882. The Bristol and District Co-operative Society was started by a group of trade unionists in 1884 in a shop in Houlton Street, St. Paul’s. One of the co-operators was shoe-maker John Wall, who wrote a history of the Bristol Society. 'We shall never forget it! The quaint shop, the small counters, the meagre supply of groceries and provisions — in all nineteen articles which had cost Ł20...

The Committee, inexperienced yet willing, with white aprons tied on firmly, bustling around with the importance but also the love of a mother hen with her first brood.'

The store opened two nights a week for its first six months; during the first quarter, average weekly trading was Ł10, and at the end of that time Ł130 had been taken and a 'divi' of 1s. 6d. was handed out.

Branch stores opened in St. George’s Road, Hotwells, and Lawrence Hill, and the movement was on its way as the first of the chain grocery stores. By 1918, the Bristol Society was prosperous enough to acquire land in Castle Street for new central premises which finally opened as a department store in 1930.

By the time the Second World War broke out, the Bristol Society’s annual sales exceeded Ł3 million. By then the Co-op could care for Bristolians from the cradle to the grave with tailoring, barbering, chiropody, hairdressing, removals, travel, milk, bread and funeral services, and there was a strong social and educational side as well.

But the war marked a cross-roads. The department store in Castle Street was one of the few to survive the Blitz, and traded on, a lone bastion in the wasteland (as recently as 1960 it had a 'Mantles' department) until Broadmead was re-developed and plans to build Fairfax House were laid.

The new store marked a new era of shopping, when the customer had to go to the shop rather than the shop to the customer, and this was an alien concept for the Co-op. It took them two decades to adjust to the new supermarket and then superstore mentality.

The Bristol Society ended the dlvi, joined the national Co-operative Wholesale Services and began a fight for customers that is still going on, as small suburban branches close to howls of protest.

The Co-op had great muscle a century ago, with its chain of branches; the small independent food retailers had to struggle against huge competition, since every suburban street could boast half a dozen butchers, bakers, grocers and greengrocers. That any of them have survived a century or more is a miracle, when you consider how difficult it is to diversify or compete against chain stores and supermarkets.

Bristol Co-operative Society Ltd

A timetable of the activities of the society: 1884 Bristol & District Co-operative Society formed and began trading at 32 Houlton Street, St Paul's, on 26 February. - 1905 Combined with the Bedminster Co-operative Society in July. - 1916 The Society's own Education Department was established at 11 High Street. - 1918 The site at 18 Castle Street was acquired. - 1928 The Education Department moved to The Scott Chambers above 73 Castle Street. Secretary was Arthur W. Cox.

1930 As stated in the Society's own souvenir brochure, 'the greatest event in the history of the Society took place when the new Central Premises in Castle Street (formerly at Lawrence Hill) were opened on 29 March. The premises are designed with quiet dignity and in true harmony with the work of the Georgian period'. The building had a dungeon, which was originally part of the old castle. The cost of the building was Ł80,000

The building was split into two sections:Facing Castle Street Basement Cafe, ladies' and gentlemen's hairdressers (appointment necessary), quick-service bazaar and stockrooms. Ground floor Drapery, men outfitters, clothes, shoes and tobacco kiosk. First floor Mantles, millinery, furs and underclothes. Second floor Furnishings, offices and boardrooms. Third floor China, hardware, committee rooms, tailors' workroom, employee's mess room and kitchen.

The facade to Castle Street was of Portland Stone and the long range of arcaded shop fronts were in bronze metal and framed in a bold architrave of black polished granite. A pneumatic cash carrier system served all floors. Heating was in panel systems, gently radiated from the ceiling. A sprinkler system protected the whole ot the building from the risk of serious fire.

Facing Castle Green Ground and First floor Warehouse (communicated with rear of the sales departments) and loading bay. Second floor A large meeting hall until a 600-seat capacity and cinema-operating room. The facade to Castle Green was of reconstructed Portland Stone.

1932 The building next to the rear of the premises in Castle Green, which once-served as a chapel, was purchased and used as furniture showroom, drapery and outfitters. The building on the opposite side of Castle Green (No.24) was acquired and demolished. I

Madison Belmont Building

Madison Belmont Building

181 Madison Avenue, Murray Hill, Manhattan, New York City, New York, United States

The Madison-Belmont Building, a transitional style building combining neo-Renaissance with early modern designs, incorporates many ideas from the growing European modern movement. The building was designed by the prominent and traditional New York architectural firm of Warren & Wetmore in an unusual style for this firm, showing a likely influence from the involvement of master iron smith Edgar Brandt as well as by the fact that Whitney Warren was spending considerable time in Paris where new concepts of Art Deco were taking hold.

The building was constructed in 1924-25 for the Merchants & Manufacturers Exchange of New York, a development company headed by Robert M. Catts and it was built as office and showroom space for silk companies in the developing Silk District of mid-town Manhattan. The Cheney Silk Company, with headquarters in Manchester, Connecticut, was the building's major tenant and had its showrooms on the first three floors of the building. Cheney Silk, started by the Cheney Brothers in 1838, was the first successful silk manufacturer in the United States. The company had numerous ties to design developments in France and had already established a relationship with Edgar Brandt, a pioneer in the Art Deco style in Paris early in the 1920s. Brandt designed the iron and bronze framing around the large showrooms of the lower three stories as well as the entrance doors and bulkhead grilles on the exterior of the building. These lower floors have been cited as one of the first instances of Art Deco architectural design in the United States.

The upper levels display more traditional ornamental motifs that have been flattened and stylized to reflect the newly emerging modern styles. The building's shaft has continuous brick piers with recessed spandrels that emphasize the building's height and a crowning cornice with upper floors marked by over-scaled terra-cotta ornament. These elements were created by the New York Architectural Terra Cotta Company, a firm that worked closely with these architects, and include window-framing pilasters, putti heads and egg and dart moldings that are similar to other Warren & Wetmore buildings but executed in a more modern style. The building has a traditional arrangement of base, shaft and capital, with ornament located in traditional areas, but the broader, more stylized execution of this ornament as well as the unusual and distinctive Art Deco motifs on the three lower floors suggest the new design ideas that were just beginning to penetrate architectural circles in this country, making this an important transitional building between traditional and modern design.

Description and analysis

Silk District

The "Silk District" of Manhattan developed in the early 1920s as sales and design businesses related to silk manufacturing moved to or constructed buildings near the intersection of 34th Street and Madison Avenue. Previously most of these companies had been located near Fourth Avenue between 18th and 20th streets. A confluence of real estate activities led to this change.

In the late 19th century this section had been developed with mansions set amid lawns and fences for wealthy New Yorkers. The well-known residents of the area included the Phelps family who had a house facing Madison Avenue between 36th and 37th Streets (later purchased by J.P. Morgan), Pierre Lorillard, Jr. who lived at the southwest corner of Madison Avenue and 34th Street and August Belmont who resided across Madison Avenue. Early in the 20th century retail establishments began to move north from Ladies Mile changing the character of all the adjoining areas. The incursion of commercial buildings included the R.H. Macy department store which moved to 34th Street and Broadway in 1901-02, B. Altman's to 34th and Fifth Avenue in 1905-6, and Tiffany & Company to Fifth and 37th Street in 1903-6, as well as a large office structure, the Cameron Building, constructed on the northeast corner of 34th Street and Madison Avenue. By 1907, the Real Estate Record & Guide reported that "all the blocks between Fifth and Sixth Avenues on Murray Hill are being invaded by retail houses, such as silversmiths, tailors, dressmakers, milliners, etc." These developments hastened the relocation of many people with private homes to areas farther north. This change was also spurred by the construction of Pennsylvania Station and the elevated trains and subways that ran along Sixth Avenue and Third Avenue, making this central area easily accessible by a variety of transportation and thus appealing to many business interests.

New York aided this transition by widening Madison Avenue between 23rd and 41st Streets by 5 feet on each side, to relieve traffic congestion in the area. The New York Times reported that "Madison Avenue has finally come into its own and may now take its place alongside
