The secret in The Secret Life of the American Teenager becomes all too clear early on. After having sex for the first time, 15-year-old Amy (Shailene Woodley) becomes pregnant. Scared and unsure of what to do, Amy keeps it a secret from her parents, hoping she'll be able to figure things out. Created by Brenda Hampton, the series is slightly edgier than Hampton's breakthrough series 7th Heaven. Though controversial in topic, The Secret Life of the American Teenager still is a family drama with a twist of Juno thrown into it. In an adroit bit of casting, 1980s teen queen Molly Ringwald plays Amy's mom, Anne. Loving and supportive (but at times clueless), Anne is preoccupied by her philandering husband. The show tackles a myriad of subjects not often seen in family-oriented programming: broken chastity vows and child abuse. It also touches on the what differentiates a good girl from the class “slut.” The script offers both preachy and snappy dialogue. When Anne tries to rush Amy's younger sister to school, the girl snaps back, “At least I won't be late for my period.” One of the defining elements of the series is that while it clearly does not condone unwed pregnancy, it also doesn't condemn it. By having the stereotypical good girl make a bad choice and wind up pregnant, the series offers the premise that this could happen to anyone, even your Straight-A child wearing a purity ring. The Secret Life of the American Teenager depicts the shame of the pregnant girl, but also offers her hope and options. There's a sweet romance between Amy and Ben (Ken Baumann), who knows she's pregnant by a different boy but loves her anyway. Their verbal exchanges are reminiscent of the dialogue between Angela and Brian from My So-Called Life, except Amy appreciates Ben's adoration. The season finale is designed to leave viewers wondering whether Amy will keep her baby, give it up for adoption or have an abortion. Given that the series originally aired in 2008 on the ABC Family channel, it's a good guess that the latter isn't a viable option. But it leaves viewers curious as to how Amy will navigate pregnancy and childbirth with finishing school and living out her own so-called life.--Jae-Ha Kim

The Secret Life of the Love Song
WEST COUNTRY GIRL
The song is called West Country Girl It is a Love Song.
It began in its innocence, as a poem, written about two years ago in Australia, where the sun shines. I wrote it with my heart in my mouth, detailing in list-form, the physical details that drew me towards a particular person...The West Country Girl. It set forth my own personal criteria of beauty, my own particular truth about beauty, as angular, cruel and impoverished as it probably was. It was a list of thing I loved, and, in truth, a wretched exercise in flattery, designed to win the girl. And it worked...and it didn't work. But the peculiar of the love song, if it has the heart to do it, is that it endures where the object of the song does not. It attaches itself to you and together you move through time. But it does more than that for just as it is our task to move forward, to cast off our past, to change and grow, in short, to forgive ourselves and each other ,the Love Song holds within it an eerie inteligence all of its own - to reinvent the past and to lay it at the feet of the present.
West Country Girl began in innocence and in sunshine, as a simple poem about a girl. But it has done what all true Love Songs must doin order to survive, it has demanded the right to it's own identity ,its own life, its own truth. I've seen it grow and mutate with time. It presents itself now as a cautionary tale, as a list of ingredients in a witch's brew, it reads as a coroners report ,or a message on a sandwich board worn by a wild-eyed man that states "The End of the World is as Hand". It is a hoarse voice in the dark that croaks "Beware...beware...beware"
“Most people don't have any idea about all the complicated life going on inside a hive. Bees have a secret life we don't know anything about.”
~ Sue Monk Kidd "The Secret Life of Bees" (the book)

The drama and secrets continue in the top rated second season of the hit ABC Family original series that has fans and critics buzzing all across America. High school is challenging enough for most teenagers--doubly so for a pregnant 15-year-old. Amy (Shailene Woodley) and Ben (Ken Baumann) start the year by planning a wedding at the same time her mother, Anne (Molly Ringwald, who sings the pop-tastic theme song), looks for work and files for divorce from the obnoxious George (Mark Derwin), leaving Amy out of luck in the childcare department. It almost plays like a sequel to Saved!, except the comedy isn't quite so edgy. Amy's friends include good girl Grace (Megan Park) and bad girl Adrian (Francia Raisa), with whom she has something in common: "troubled narcissistic underachiever" Ricky (Darren Kagasoff), the father of her baby, who dates Grace by day and sleeps with Adrian by night.
The Secret Life is, essentially, a teen soap, an impression reinforced by the presence of Beverly Hills 90210's Jason Priestley in the director’s chair and Melrose Place's Josie Bissett as Grace's mom (another familiar primetime face, John Schneider, plays her father), but it still bears comparison to Brenda Hampton's 7th Heaven, since there are several well adjusted Christian characters, like the Bowmans (Grace's family) and the Stones (Grace's sometime-boyfriend Jack's family).
As the second season swings into full gear, Anne meets a new man, Adrian falls for her stepbrother, Amy's sarcastic 13-year-old sister, Ashley (India Eisley), gets her first boyfriend, and Amy finally decides whether to keep the baby or not. Supplemental materials include the featurette "Character Secrets," in which the actors discuss their roles, and "Cast Close-ups," in which they reveal information about themselves. Ringwald, for instance, cites The Breakfast Club as the top pick from her filmography, while Baumann acknowledges that he used to be a department-store-catalog model. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
