On Holiday

Now it's my turn to feature in one of my collection of family photographs. This was taken on holiday in 1962 when we went to the Lake District. The new "Igloo" tent can be seen to the left, this was pumped up with a car foot pump. My brother is on the left and Dad is stopping my sister from jumping about too much. Not sure why he's looking so serious, could be he's trying to explain to my Mum how to hold his new camera!

It was a Balda folding camera, made in Germany with a superbly sharp lens; it was however, extremely fiddly to use as it it had a non-coupled rangefinder which didn't allow for spontaneity and the reason why this photo is probably unsharp.

And now to me; it would appear I'm wearing school clothes, certainly the shorts and socks appear to be part of my uniform, a grey shirt and pullover completed the look! I love the way my sock has fallen down, my mother obviously hadn't noticed that or I would have been asked to adjust it!

This is not at a campsite, but in the back garden of the mother of a friend of my father, where we stopped overnight on the long laborious journey to Cumberland and the lakes. I remember whilst on that holiday we travelled on the first piece of "motorway" constructed, the Preston bypass.

'I feed my baby!'

Liam is a very caring and helpful big brother. I took this picture the other day when I walked in the room to find Liam plugging his crying baby brother with a bottle he had pulled out of the baby bag.

Yesterday afternoon, I was out running errands and Nikki was at home with the boys. She was on the phone with a volunteer for a road race she's helping organize. Liam was on the porch playing and Camper was in the kitchen in his high chair.

Camper started crying because he was hungry. Nikki really needed to finish her conversation, so she went into the office. A few minutes later, she returned to the kitchen where Camper was still crying and Liam had done his little trick of pushing a chair over to the sink. He was standing on the chair with his back to Nikki. The water was running, and, as usual, he was very busy.

Nikki said something to the extent of, "Liam stop playing in the sink." To which, he replied, "I not playing. I feeding my baby!"

He had found one of those snap-on bottle tops (similar to the one pictured on the ground next to LIam's left hand) that you pop on the bottle when you put it in the baby bag {and you don't want boob juice or formula all over the inside of your bag.... I digress...}

He had then poured some of Camper's baby rice cereal into said bottle top and was in the process of mixing it with water when Nikki found him.

Nikki said it was slightly runny, but perfectly serviceable. She transferred Liam's mixture to a bowl, added some more water and rice and fed Camper his first meal prepared by his older brother.

Even a decade after his death at age 38 in 1997, Israel "Iz" Kamakawiwo'ole remains Hawaii's best-known and most beloved singer. His career began when he and his older brother, Skippy, formed a group in their hometown near Honolulu. The two performed together until the latter died in 1982. The band continued on for some years but it was Iz's haunting voice, with its searing yet limpid falsetto, that captured the popular imagination. Indeed, his 'ukulele-laced version of "Over the Rainbow" is widely thought to be the only interpretation that could possibly stand up to Judy Garland's original. Now that the definitive retrospective, Alone in IZ World (2001), has been released, it is perhaps inevitable that new arrangements should be slipped in under Iz's inimitable, indelible vocal tracks. The good news is, however, that these particular lush orchestrations, while totally superfluous, are nonetheless respectful and in good taste, never overwhelming the singing (as if anything could!). There are no revelations, but, fortunately, no unpleasant shocks, either. Perhaps, had he lived, Iz might have decided to go this route anyway. As with Louis Armstrong's (the title of this album refers to Iz's own cover of "What A Wonderful World") and Buddy Holly's string-backed experiments, it's simply yet another way to celebrate the legacy of a departed genius. --Christina Roden

use the bottom of the shirt to make ties, you need at least a 1.75" by 40" strip. if necessary take out any stitching and press flat. determine how wide and long you can make your ties, depending on how much fabric you have. with a long strip of neutral fabric, sew the two pieces together, right sides facing (if there is not enough excess material to just fold it in half) and trim the excess. press flat at the seam, and then proceed to make a double folded strip, folding 1/4" of each fabric at the edge and pressing. then fold in the ends and press and top stitch.

7. place and pin the ties

decide the best place to put the ties. with the printed side facing the dress' front, pin the ties near the shirring.

Dr. Bunsen Honeydew and Beaker from "The Muppets Show" homemade Halloween couples costume (October 2010)

This was put together after a week of last minute Halloween preparations. He originally wanted to be Animal and I wanted to be Gonzo but I just didn't have enough time or resources to do that so we settled for Honeydew and Beaker instead! It's not a famous He & She couple but nevertheless, a great DUO!

How I did it

Dr. Bunsen Honeydew Costume:
Head: 4 Layers of "cooked" paper mache over the period of a week onto a punch ball (3 pack of punch balls $1 at Dollar Tree). For those of you who don't know, the cooked paper mache makes a stronger bond, and dries clear which is why I recommend it. I would paper mache one layer a night before bed, and by the time I came home from school the next day it was dry and I'd do the next layer. After all the layers were dried over 5 days, I then taped cardboard pieces with blue painters tape to the paper mache ball and added polyfil to it to create the ears and nose. I cut a hole out for the mouth and to put my head inside. I did a coat of Elmer's glue on the inside to help seal it up so the dust didn't get in my eyes or hair when wearing it because I didn't have any polyurethane or shellac. Then using a hot glue gun, I covered the whole thing with green stretch felt ($2.97 for one yard at Walmart). I painted a pair of giant sunglasses black after popping out the lenses and hot glued those in place afterward (Big sunglasses, $1 at Dollar Tree). I then took some black women's tights and cut, stretched, and glued them in the mouth section so people couldn't see me, but I could still kind of see out (Leggings $1 at Dollar Tree).
Hands: Light green knit gloves ($1 at Joann Fabric) [I should note I did make 4 finger gloves out of extra stretch felt but they ripped so I had these as a backup]
Outfit: White lab coat (free! I had it from when I worked in a photo lab) Black vest (free, already owned one) Dark pants (free, already had!) dark shoes (again, FREE, I already had them!). Giant red tie, made from cardboard, hot glue and red remnant fabric ($1 at Walmart)

Beaker Costume:
Head: Poster board stapled and taped into a tube ($1 at Walmart). Shoulder notches were cut out and the mouth was cut out. Spray adhesive (free, already owned) was then used to adhere light pink fuzzy fabric to it ($2.97 for one yard at Walmart). I hot glued 2 styrofoam balls on for the eyes with black painted dots in the middle for the pupils (2 pack of styrofoam balls $1 at Dollar Tree). Black felt and some black women's tights were cut, stretched, and glued to the inside of the mouth section so people couldn't see me, but I could still kind of see out (Leggings $1 at Dollar Tree, I had plenty so I used the same pair for the other head). I couldn't find orange fur fabric anywhere so I had to buy 2 white pre-cut fur sections and spray paint them orange. (Fur $4 at JoAnn Fabric, Spray paint $3.79 at Walmart). That was cut and hot glued on after it dried. The nose was an orange fleece baby blanket that was cut, stuffed with polyfil and then hot glued onto the headpiece (fleece baby blanket $1 at Dollar Tree).
Hands: Pink knit gloves ($1 at Joann Fabric) [I should note I did make 4 finger gloves out of extra pink fabric but they ripped, didn't stretch, and were too small so I had these as a backup]
Outfit: White lab coat (free! I had it from when I worked in a photo lab) White collared dress shirt (free, he already owned one) Dark pants (free, already had!) dark shoes (again, FREE, he already had them!). Giant black tie, made from cardboard, hot glue and black remnant fabric ($1 at Walmart)

Total Cost of both costumes together: approximately $20
[about $8 for Dr. Bunsen Honeydew, about $12 for Beaker]

Ball caps, and bandannas over their faces like old western outlaws. In this shot, they actually got *Real uniforms!

Trans-Alaska Pipeline

The pipeline runs 800 miles from the oil fields to the marine terminal in Valdez, with 420 miles above ground and 380 miles below ground; here, looking north, you see the pipeline emerging from below ground.

You may have gathered I found the pipeline fascinating. I like this shot because it shows the pipeline above ground, as well as going underground. Plus, you can see the Haul Road and the tundra.

She was afraid of knowing what it was herself. “Principal Downing was afraid she was going to die. “Julie Reid was afraid that no one would notice her. She was also afraid that someone would. And there was a deeper, unnamed fear inside her that she couldn’t escape—a fear that she was nothing and no one . . .” Yearbook is a captivating story about relationships and heartaches and fears and ideas and doubts and testimonies and everything that a teenage mind and a backpack can contain. But most important, Yearbook is a novel about how everyone has something to offer and something to learn.

Flowers

Once upon a time I was a senior in high school. I had fulfilled most of my required courses, so I was able to take a host of easy “blow off” classes. So easy that my dad would ask me at night “How were Paper Mache and Sandbox today?” These classes included Study Hall, Yearbook, Remedial Math for Dummies, Student Government, and Introduction to Art. Now an outsider might ask “how the hell do you take Student Government as a class?” And the answer would be the same as for “how the hell do you take Yearbook as a class?” Answer: someone brilliant came up with this idea so we wouldn’t have to stay after school to be in these clubs. We got credits to graduate and passes to get out of school early to eat at Subway, er I mean sell Yearbook ads. I love that person wherever they are. But back to Introduction to Art which is what today’s story is about. No Alicia, this isn’t the story about the time I spilled yellow tempera paint all over myself and had to change into a dirty, wrinkled t-shirt and shorts that were in my trunk, and wear them all day when it was around 50 degrees outside. This story is the one where we had to draw self portraits. This was a freshman level class. I consider myself crafty, but not so talented in the drawing and painting department, so I was getting by. I wasn’t going to win any prizes, but I would probably pull off a B. Fortunately Alicia was sat next to me and we made jokes and sang songs about art, and didn’t really give a shit how the class went because we were bound for Community College, and we felt like Mr. Beckett was pretty lucky that we even came to class that day. So about the self portraits. This was done by holding a compact mirror in one hand and drawing a picture of your face with the other hand. I swear to God I think I could have taken A.P. Chemistry and had an easier assignment. One morning we were sitting around waiting for Mr. Beckett to pass out the unfinished portraits and I saw that mine was on top. Since our table was closest to his desk I heard him say “Who is that?” when he picked mine up. His face turned red when he realized I had just heard him, and my face turned red because I couldn’t even do the work of a freshman. I failed to capture my essence on paper in even a marginally recognizable way. The sad thing is that I thought it looked just like me. That was probably the day I decided I would major in Liberal Arts when I got to Community College, because I already knew math was out, and I obviously had no future in Fine Arts either.
