MEX0-1 all-arounder with drop bars Added some old Nitto RM013 drop bars, I believe these were the same ones sold on some Bridgestone MB-1s. With drop bars you really have to raise them on this bike so I added a fugly Dimension riser stem. Black SKS 45mm fenders and yellow Time ATAC pedals are new too. I built it to ride dirt roads and fire trails, but it makes a fine commuter. I find myself seeking out the bumps and cracks just to see how a plump tire at 40 PSI takes it. Put together mostly with stuff from my parts bin, total budget about $350. We'd been biking so long, I'd become sort of numb to speed and motion -- and unmindful of the danger involved. Instantly, my foot got sucked into the spokes, and followed the spinning wheel about half a revolution. When it came around the top and hit the fork, everything stopped. Or rather, the front wheel stopped. The back of the bike (with me on it) pitched up, and with all my forward / downhill momentum, swung on the axis of the front wheel. I slammed headfirst into the ground, with my bike ontop of me. Gios with Campagnolo hi low hub Titanium nuts on Camp. skewer levers. Super record titanium pedals with alloy toe clips w/ Alfredo Binda two-ply straps. Hi-low Campagnolo hub 36 hole. 28 hole front, OMAS titanium bottom bracket, ti BB bolts.... Note the slot Jeff milled into the back side of the front derailleur cage. Note too. the drilled rear derailleur pulley cage. Also, the Campagnolo crankset has been polished. This is done by spraying Easy-off oven cleaner ORIGINAL STRENGTH, NOT WATER BASED, on the anodizing for five minutes max. Then work it with mild steel wool (preferably bronze wool from a marine hardware store). If you walk away with this toxic stuff eating anodizing, it will not stop there and will microcreater your aluminum alloy (not good :-( ). Then, take the arms to the polishing wheel with rouge and hold on tite to keep the part from becoming a projectile. The hubs too are polished, so don't worry about corrosion later on those arms. Autowax will help to keep the shine alive. Polishing really sets-off the ride. "New" Old Bike... A bike sale this past weekend was bad... I ended up buying two more bikes, this one and an old English 3 Speed from 1957. This one is an Elvish Caravane. Elvish was a French company located in the south near Pau. I'm not sure how old it is, I suspect early 1970's (at least as old as if not older than I am). Got it from the St. Vincent De Paul charity shop. Paid $40.00. Had to buy new tires and tubes. Those cost me $38.00. The new tires cost me nearly what I paid for it :) All in all a nice bike, and I think it will become my regular bike, I'll be retiring the mountain bike. IMG 0160 Last night Sneaky made a few new hippie Phish-head friends and enjoyed a beer with them at our campground. These guys have been on the road since may following musical festivals. We missed the turn we were supposed to take in Rockville and didn't realize it until we'd already made it all the way to Springdale (which is also a town the size of a postage stamp). We stopped to get gas, and asked the attendant if there were any camping stores or outdoor guide shops in the area, and he said he didn't know. We went about 50 feet down the road and found 3 (don't worry, we had to return to this station to buy ice, and Kyle made sure to call the guy out on that fact). We walked into a store that sells and rents mountain bikes and met a very hyperactive and intense woman named Reggie, and we asked about someplace to camp. She looked at our map and started pointing us in the same direction of what we were looking for initially. "We couldn't find the street when we went through Rockville." "Oh, that's because the people in Rockville hate everyone. The street is Bridge Rd, but you'll never find it because they paint over it. Just look for the rust-colored house." She made small talk with us about our trip and what our plans were for our brief stay in Zion, and we told her we scrounged up a guide to take us canyoneering in the morning. "Oh? Who's your guide??" "Joe" "Frenchie?!" "Uh, maybe. All we know about him is that his name is Joe and he drives a blue truck." (but like I said, turns out he drives an Integra) "Yeah, that sounds like Frenchy! He's legend." "We want a guide that will take us through stuff that will scare the crap out of us." "Oh yeah, Frenchy will scare you. He's crazy." Well all right then. We left the bike shop with all new directions (that we could follow) to a site where we could once again camp for free (with the Phish-heads), and are pretty pumped to meet the Zion legend Joe French in the morning. Tour de France 2008 Stage 21: The wait begins - How many euros will you pay for yelllow things? When we booked our two months to Paris, it occured to me that it was around the Tour de France time of year. I raced to my computer and almost shouted out that yes, we could see the finale of the Tour de France a week after we arrived. I'd like to share my experience with this photographic journey... To begin, there are the t-shirts, hats, baby suits (the profile on the left of the pic) all in yellow - the colour that signifies the winner. We didn't want to seem like tourists with a silly hat, t-shirt or even jersey (for $125 CAD), but we did acquire subtle cycling gloves that were Tour de France branded with quality gel in the palms for future use. No one in Paris wears biking gear on a day to day basis, unless you are in the Tour de France of course! Bike Barometer Along the new Green Path that slices diagonally across Copenhagen and Frederiksberg - a kind of motorway for bikes - the City of Frederiksberg has set up a 'Cykelbarometer'. It counts the number of cyclists that use the new pathway system each day. The idea is to encourage more people to ride by showing how many are using it. It is rather new, so the total number is only about 70,000. But the maximum for the year is 1 million. By the way, the sign isn't broken, it's just my camera that couldn't register the diodes. On the left it will show last years total, once we get that far. How do they know whose bike is being removed? How do they go around cutting bike locks without anyone saying anything to them? This is basically a way to get the bike of your choosing for $50. These were all over Division Street. Cheap bike lock Cheap lock + expensive bike = not good combo. I just saw this on my way to class. The lock is attached to the end of the break cable and a guide wire for the tree. The 16mm camera travelled on the bikes until Lake Disappointment, and I filmed a lot more from the air on the Northern portion of the route. Although none of us knew a great deal about movie making, the resultant short film when professionally edited turned out quite well. It was played to thousands who visited the display about the Expedition at the Royal Show that year. The film and along with some other Super 8 stuff has been now copied to DVD. Unheard of in those days! The Departure from Wiluna - 1974 Yamaha Canning Stock Route Dirt Bike Expedition - 1974 The bikes about to leave Wiluna for the long ride ahead. Wherever we went the locals were very skeptical about the expeditions with comments like, "They will be dead before they reach Lake Disappointment." They didn't know of our resourcefulness, but there was a very difficult task ahead!
