Although the shooting of Pather Panchali started on 27th October 1952, Satyajit Ray was still looking for a rural location for his principal shootings where he could discover for himself,

Front Porch & planter with Hybiscus

The porch floor is needing painting and will be done in a couple of weeks. The floor is pale sea green, though it looks gray in this shade. That is really a Kennedy rocker, and my spot on the porch. I love reading my new Kindle eBook in that chair. I could sit out here all day. In fact, it's time to do that now! The Hydrangea, foreground is starting to get blossoms on the ends. On the bench are two huge flats of mixed color Impatiens. The new galvanized planters got planted today with tropical Hibiscus trees.

A Story About a Piano & a Car Crash

I got as far as Monte Carlo a week before the festival and was determined to take my modest production into Cannes to film a glamour model walking around the construction and the pre-festival bustle, but made the mistake of stopping in San Remo instead. Crazy little town, famous for a second-rate music festival, a kissing cousin to Atlantic City with a shabby casino in the shadows of Monaco's bluffs, and the weird hotel I scouted for a shoot was something straight out of 1950's Brooklyn, kitsch and rubbishy art, and the night manager pulls me aside after the first day of shooting and says:

"Look, this is me seven years ago, when I was younger than you, and I was tall and confident and in charge of a music business, and this is her."

He shows me a dozen pristine photographs of a striking young woman, beautiful and confident.

"She gets killed and leaves me with a son who can play the piano and in-laws who somehow blame me, perhaps for marrying above my head, and I carry these pictures around in that briefcase because without them I am dead, and then who is there for her son? Maybe I shrink into the small man holding these photographs, opening the hotel doors after midnight for the drunk guests who stumble in from the casino, and maybe I can't be bothered to read or write even a postcard or listen to any music. I don't have the machine, I have no discs, and I hear no melody when I am out on the street; just horns and tires and the police calling me to kill me with news about the end of this woman's smile. But I have enough left in me to tell her son to keep playing. Play, I beg him. He is not very good. But he plays. She is tone deaf, so it wouldn't have mattered to her."

We both look at the photographs. I tell him I was born and raised in Cannes, and I want to take the model in room 223 who looks remarkably like his wife to Cannes to have her walk around in the preparation for the festival, but that my wings are programmed always to fly toward beauty, and this stinking hotel with its crumpled nightwatchman holding onto his photos for dear life is better than anything I can find in Cannes, to which he says:

"I am not beautiful and neither is the crap in Cannes, so perhaps you are wasting your time and you should go back to somebody who smiles at you when you smile at them."

We don't go to Cannes. Sushi at the harbor in Monte Carlo is as close as we get before we drive back to Ostia. The nightwatchman gives me nothing to film, adds nothing to the set or the piece I am shooting except for the fact that he is watching me. And stories always feel secure with an audience like this, so a story creeps out of me in San Remo and flickers into being in front of the cameras.

When we leave early in the morning the nightwatchman brings me to a table and tells me to move a chair. I can't. The chairs are attached to the table, and the table is attached to the floor, and atop the table a reclining stone Buddha takes up all the space. Nobody would sit here, and couldn't if they wanted to. The nightwatchman treads the floor around the table legs. There is a spot, he says, and if you stand on it you will break through the flooring and fall into the city sewer. We smile at each other and he shrugs the classic slow shrug of his fatigued neighborhood.

"My son plays out of tune for my dead lover, and I watch my step so I am not washed out to sea with the tourists' merde. I am sorry you see me like this, because seven years ago I would have made you some music and we could have gone to laugh at the fools in Cannes, and we could have walked to the Californie with my wife like a swan among sparrows, and you could have told her your story of throwing the pots and pans from the third-floor balcony, and she would have smiled every second of it, because to her every sparrow was also a swan. And I don't know how much you know about swans, but they don't usually think that way."

On the road to Ostia I remember that a week before I was in Beirut, shooting a scuba diver and the oil spill, and before that filming a waitress in Rome who sings like Frank Sinatra, and before that a woman in her sixties who brought Arabic dance to RAI and the Italians who dances for four hours and es "Why do you stop!" when I collapse, exhausted. Why am I going back to Hollywood? Because of the lynx who lives with me on top of the hill above the city? For the coyotes? The hummingbirds and red-tailed hawks? To meet with producers on the deck and try to fool somebody into financing my plans?

What beautiful thing has come from Hollywood? What shattering idea? What sublime nuance, which charming tale? Is the place so putrid and shallow that I don't notice the dead wives and tables screwed in above the trapdoors to the sewage? Cannes thumbs its nose at Santa Monica. So what? Cannes is full of shallow fools chasing power and money.

[19:38] arwen Eiren looks over to adagio"me promise be a good girl and to listen to you and mara."

[19:41] Amara kneeled on the carpet, carefully resting her weight on both hands in preparation for her pushups. These she liked more than the situps. "Good to know you're happy, sweetheart. And even better to know you'll be a good girl, Arwen. No more bath tub chases yes?" She had every expectation that she'd be chasing the girl up and down Main Street for some other reason, but the knowledge that bathtime would not be a production was nice.

[19:42] arwen Eiren grins then nods"okays..."she giggles rmeembering the bath chase after her adventure.

[19:43] Adagio: just smiles a little bit turning back around wiping the last vestiges of her tears from her eyes. she'd break into a slight smiel seeing amara doing pushups. "Do those with teh real arm and we'll see how many you can do." she'd just laugh gently joining Amara on the floor after removing the jacket and necklace.

[19:48] arwen Eiren decides just to dance though she starts to yawn a little as she does

[19:50] Amara rolled her eyes at the challenge. "Don't get cocky with me. I'm working my right arm so it can be as fast as my natural one." She was all too happy to switch arms and show the clear difference between muscle and machine. "See? It's slower on my right. I can't work the arm this quickly, it doesn't respond that fast." Arm exercises, Amara was comfy with.

[19:52] Adagio: nods a little bit spotting the difference. "it's not tuned to be fast Amara. I don't need you destroying your arms every few fights. But Good you're working out anyway."

[19:55] Amara nodded, returning to her artificial limb. "I know it's not tuned to be fast, but it's odd when my natural reaction times are faster than my arm can manage." She glanced at Adagio's legs. "Adagio…Are you doing pushups at 100 miles per hour…in pumps?!"

[19:57] Adagio: just chuckles a little bit. "yes actually, it forces me to stabilize my lower body more when I workout with shoes on, besides, this was spur of the moment. and I hate saying this amara, but you'll have to get used to that arm being slower unless you want it weaker."

[20:02] Amara sighed. "I know I can't expect it to be any faster than it was designed to be, but a few seconds shaved off the processing time is good enough for me. For a while, I could only manage three or four on this arm before the area by my shoulder would go numb…like the phantom limb stuff." As if on cue, Amara started to feel her nerves falling asleep. She stopped, moving to her other arm before she sat on the floor. "Okay. One hour…that's enough for me."

Art Nouveau Mosaic Floor Design - Mucha

One of my favourite Artists is Alphonse Mucha and this is part of the interior of the George Fouquet Shop which Much designed and is in the art nouveau style.Gives you an idea how ornate the shop looked.

Mucha moved to Paris in 1887, and continued his studies at Academie Julian and Academie Colarossi while also producing magazine and advertising illustrations. Around Christmas 1894, Mucha happened to drop into a print shop where there was a sudden and unexpected demand for a new poster to advertise a play starring Sarah Bernhardt, the most famous actress in Paris, at the Theatre de la Renaissance. Mucha volunteered to produce a lithographed poster within two weeks, and on 1 January 1895, the advertisement for Gismonda appeared on the streets of the city. It was an overnight sensation and announced the new artistic style and its creator to the citizens of Paris.[2] Bernhardt was very satisfied with his work and commissioned further work.

Mucha produced a flurry of paintings, posters, advertisements, and book illustrations, as well as designs for jewellery, carpets, wallpaper, and theatre sets in what came to be known as the Art Nouveau style. Mucha's works frequently featured beautiful healthy young women in flowing vaguely Neoclassical looking robes, often surrounded by lush flowers which sometimes formed haloes behind the women's heads

While living in Paris Mucha went into partnership with George Fouquet to design jewlellery for his shop which mucha also designed. The shop was demolished with the exterior and interior moved and rebuilt in the Musee Carnavalet.

Custom Kitchen Design Ideas

The far wall has three glass inserts in perfect golden proportion to the wood door. The entire wall has a spiral pattern leading from the three doors, across the horizontal, lift up doors, down the left side to curl up to the small square. The cabinets are Anigre wood, granite in the kitchen area and wood counter in the foreground dining area that matches the floor and the upper eaves. Originally designed for a single man, it is now home to a single woman. Great design has no limit!

The historic Madison hotel

We were looking for a place to stay for the last night in Yellowstone. We got a list of all the hotels in West Yellowstone from the previous night hotel's stay. We randomly called a few numbers from the list and booked this one - Madison hotel. And after a long day in Yellowstone National park, we reached this place late in the night. Unknowingly we reserved a room in one of the most famous and historic hotels in the Yellowstone area. We loved the place as soon as we saw it and felt that we stumbled upon something historical. The Madison hotel is listed in National register of historic places by the United States government. Everything inside and outside has a long history. It was a great experience.

There is an inscription on the side there that reads:
The Forest Service granted Jess Pierman a special-use permit to build a hotel and restaurant here in 1910. A large tent accommodated guests until the present hotel was under construction in the fall of 1912. Doll Barlett began cooking for Pierman in 1910, saving much of her weekly ten-dollar paycheck. Her husband Roxy drove the stage between Monida and West Yellowstone. By the time the hotel was under construction, the Barletts had saved enough money to buy the business which they ran until Roxy died in the 1920s. Doll continued to run the hotel with her second husband, George Pickup. The two story rectangular plan is of simple log construction with saddle-notched corner timbering and a prominent front dormer. The original six upstairs rooms, warmed by a cut stone fireplace in the downstairs lobby, catered to rail and stage travelers. Each room had a pitcher, a wash basin and a chamber pot. Water came from well across the street. The hotel expanded adding fourteen rooms in 1921 and a bar and dance floor soon after, but there was no running water until the 1930s. In 1923, President Harding was a guest and and antiquated registers show that such Hollywood greats as Wallace Beery and Gloria Swanson enjoyed the hospitality of the Madison Hotel. Log support columns and beams, wood floors, light fixtures, the stone fireplace and many of the room furnishings are original. Although not the first hotel in West Yellowstone, the Madison is the only hotel that remains from this early period when tourism was in its infancy.

A Cold Day In Hell

Two years ago, originally intended as simply an interesting shot with minimum commentary, I was satisfied to offer this image in minimal fashion. Time has, however, expanded my view through experience, and so I now feel compelled to offer a full dose of well-deserved commentary.

March 2008,

Our employer erected this so-called “security” barrier at the perimeter of our outdoor patio area. This building, now a factory, was once a “Builders Supply” store and this patio area was that store’s garden center. Surrounded on three sides by the building walls and covered with a steel roof, this one side was open to the world beyond. Prior to the erection of this 10-foot high fence, we were free to step out into the sun, on sunny days, or not, as we chose, during breaks and lunch. Given that the factory portion of the building has no windows what-so-ever for fresh air or natural light, the intermittent connection to the outside world was refreshing, invigorating, a brief respite from the noisy, artificial environment of the factory proper.

But, no more. These bars stand tall and firm. There is no gate,, and no escape,, until you've completed your sentence of eight.

In the factory we are about four hundred strong. During our breaks and lunch, this limited space fills up quickly with bodies pressed in close, everyone trying to speak at once, and the din of voices is so loud you can scarcely hear your own. There is no sense of peace or escape from the turmoil of the factory.

Every morning, during first break only, a chow truck arrives and the chow man has to pass food through the bars like feeding animals in a zoo or offering treats to inmates in a prison. A large unruly crowd of bodies, crushes against the fence, everyone yelling and thrusting out money, all at the same time, trying to get the chow man’s attention, place their order, get their food or drinks or smokes,,, It seems at times that these people have been reduced to animals.

It may be argued that this barrier keeps unwanted persons out, somehow helping to ensure our collective safety. A convenient point this is, but that is all it is, for we who labor within the factory walls have the advantage of the greater truth. We see with our own eyes and understand without doubt or hesitation that the force which employs us, is not concerned with our safety, nor our comfort, nor our health.

We have four tiny sinks to serve four hundred souls and 16 bathroom stalls that may be used by male and female alike. A man may enter a stall in which a woman has just discarded her used feminine products, the smell of this hanging heavy in the air. Each stall has a ceiling fan,,, that never runs. A woman may enter a stall in which a man has just urinated on the seat, but might not notice this fact until she has seated herself.

Those four tiny sinks are plumbed for both hot and cold water, but even in winter, no hot water runs through the pipes. There are but two soap dispensers and two paper towel dispensers,,, for a factory of four hundred souls. Frequently, the soap dispensers are empty and the towels are all gone. Consequently, many have become discouraged from washing hands,,, indeed, given the short length of time for breaks and the sheer number of workers, there simply is not enough time or space for the luxury of maintaining cleanliness.

And all throughout the factory, access to fire extinguishers is routinely blocked by pallets and boxes and large heavy carts. A forklift driver barrels along, passing inches from people and items that would be sent flying if ever the unthinkable happened. Managers zip back and forth on motorized mini-bikes, sometimes narrowly avoiding collisions with workers. Pieces of waxed paper and a film of fine-grained dust are an ever-present slip hazard on the smooth concrete floor. Unmarked electrical conduit crosses walking/working paths, a constant trip hazard for all. 500 pound spreading machines fly along twenty yard tables, over hanging the table a foot or more on each side,,, their operating areas not delineated by painted lines on the floor, warning signs, or rigid barriers to cordon off the space. Collisions between worker and machine have occurred, the workers always lose this contest.

With the exception of sewing machine operators, almost no other factory workers are permitted to work sitting down, despite the fact that most people work at very specific locations and could in fact perform even better if allowed to sit on a tall stool.

And that patio area, though it has double door access, one of those doors is always locked, so at any point in time, a hundred or more people must upon hearing the end-of-break bell, attempt to pass through this single narrow opening as quickly as possible, occasionally with a manager or supervisor yelling at everyone to, “hurry, hurry, hurry”, to make it back to their prospective work areas within a two or three minute period. Kitchen floor pattern - Late Sept 016

This is the square tiling pattern in the kitchen. Because the kitchen pattern was basically a big square, and because we wanted to emphasize lines and space, I laid out this simple square of darker border tiles with 3 by 3 pieces of 18-inch (450 mm) Italian porcelain tile inside. The tile outside the pattern is turned at a 45 degree angle to the inside. The idea was simplicity and subtlety, repitition of basic design elements, and adaptation to each of the three spaces.

Floor Project - End of Day 11

It's done! Just kididng. Started setting the tile today. Of course it takes longer than I thought. Hopefully I can finish setting the tile tomorrow and start to grout on Monday. This gives you a good idea of how it will look when it's done. The only difference is that the grout we chose is very light in color. Right now the lines between the tiles are dark.

This bench is new

If there was ever a bench in this location when I was a student, I can guarantee that it wasn't as new and shiny as this one. It would have been made from some splintered old wood, and it would have been painted green, with paint so old that it was chipped and worn away.

So I have no idea when this bench appeared. Maybe last week. Maybe yesterday. Maybe this morning.

It was a lifetime ago that I stumbled off a Greyhound bus in downtown Boston, a clueless 17 year old kid with two suitcases that held all my worldly possessions. I dragged them out to the street (no roll-aboard suitcases in those ancient times), and asked a taxi driver to take me to an address in Cambridge that I had scribbled on a scrap of paper: 77 Massachusetts Ave.

"Aye," the driver muttered, in a dialect that never did become familiar during the next several years. "SebendySebenMassAve."

When he dropped me off, I noticed two things. First, enormous stone steps leading up to the entrance to an imposing granite building. And second, a long line of scraggly, sloppily-dressed young men stretching from the building's entrance down toward the street where the taxi had dropped me. Aha, I thought: I'm not the only one who forgot to fill out the official form requesting a dorm room.

Welcome to MIT.

I waited in line for two hours before being assigned temporarily, with two other equally absent-minded, newly-arrived MIT students, to sleep on mattresses in an East Campus dorm room that had initially been assigned as a "single" room to an understandably annoyed fellow from Cincinnati. One of the other temporary misfits, whom we immediately nicknamed "Filthy Pierre," had just arrived from Paris with nothing but one large, heavy duffel bag that he dragged into the room. Its contents consisted of miscellaneous telephone parts, which he dumped on the floor and kicked under the bed before wandering out of the room to explore Boston. (He had not showered in weeks, and he was eventually expelled for burning a cross on MIT's Great Lawn on Easter morning. But that's another story.)

Thus began my four-year experience at what many still consider America's premiere scientific/engineering university. That I survived and graduated is a minor miracle; and while I'll hint at the adventures along the way, in this Flickr set, you'll have to look elsewhere for the details...

I continued to live in Cambridge for a couple of years after I graduated; took a couple of graduate courses in AI and computer science, taught a couple summer MIT classes to innocent high school students (one of whom challenged me to write the value of pi on the blackboard, to 100 places, from memory - which I did), took full advantage of MIT's athletic facilities, and 25-cent Saturday-nite movies at Kresge auditorium, which always featured the enormously popular RoadRunner cartoons, and occasionally walked through the same halls and pathways that I had first explored as an overwhelmed undergraduate student. But then I got a new job, moved to New York City, got married, settled down, and began raising family. After that, I typically travelled to Boston two or three times a year on business trips, but never seemed to have time to come back to MIT for a casual visit.

But one of the advantages of a near-fanatical devotion to the hobby of photography is that you begin to appreciate that all of the experiences you internalized and took for granted need to be photographed -- for posterity, if nothing else. Some of my most vivid memories of MIT, which we took for granted - like the huge,red, neon, flashing/pulsating "Heinz 57" sign out on the northern edge of the (Briggs) athletic fields -- are gone. Some of the legendary professors and deans have died and commemorative plaques have been erected in their honor. And there's a whole lot of new stuff - mostly new buildings and laboratories, whose specific purpose is a mystery to me - that I just have to shrug and accept.

But the basic campus is still there. And the memories are just as vivid as they were, so many years ago. I can't say that I captured them all in this Flickr set; the photos were taken at sunset one evening, and dawn the following morning. But they'll give you an idea of what it was like, a long long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away ... and what it's still like today.

I want a giant earth globe (3'+) that sits on a floor stand (1800s-style) to counter-balance the mod and interior design.... maybe able to find one at a salvage lot. TBD.

I like the Tanker desks but it may not be THE solution. We're not getting it right the first few iterations, so starting with IKEA as a stopgap for desks... and get some quality pieces to go along with them like the Eames chairs...

Any interior designers out there that can help?

The Cambridge Medieval History Series consists of 8 volumes, with volume 1 first published in 1911. Planned by one of the most renowned Byzantinists and Medievalists of the day, John B. Bury, it became the de facto standard by which all comprehensive period histories would be measured. Its impact on the field of medieval scholarship is every bit as great as Gibbon’s “Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire”.

Volume One – The Christian Roman Empire and the Foundation of the Teutonic Kingdoms begins with the accession of Constantine to the Imperium and ends roughly with reign of Justinian in the East. It covers the migration of Germanic tribes into Roman territories. Significant attention is given the ecumenical church councils of the 4th Century, with particular emphasis on the Arian controversies.

Volume Two – The Rise of the Saracens and the Foundation of the Western Empire covers the time period from roughly 500 CE to 814 CE. Beginning with Justinian, it also looks at the Frankish Merovingian dynasty, the Lombard Kingdom in Italy, the Restoration of the Imperium in Italy, and ends with the transition of power from the Merovingians to the Carolingians through Charlemagne’s reign. Chapters covering England and English institution and the conversion of the Celts. Finally, attention is given to the birth and spread of Islam and the growth of the Islamic Caliphate.

Volume Three – Germany and the Western Empire covers the period from roughly 814 CE through the end of the first millennium. Beginning with the reign of Louis the Pious, it traces the decline of the Carolingian Empire and the foundation of the Capetian Dynasty. Attention is paid to the Holy Roman Empire in Germany through Henry III. The impact of the Norse Vikings on the political landscape is examined as is the development of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of England through the death of Edward the Confessor. Throughout the volume development of feudalism as a primary labor, land-owning, and social way of life is highlighted. Finally, the continued growth of the Western Caliphate is looked at.

Volume Four – The Eastern Roman Empire focuses primarily on the Byzantine East from roughly 700 CE through the end of the Empire in 1483. The different dynasties (Isaurian, Phrygian, and Macedonian) receive their own chapters, and in-depth attention is paid to the struggle with the emerging Islamic Caliphate. Descripcion
Disenado en el estilo neoclasico, la villa consta de un cuerpo central rodeado por dos alas que se desarrollan en la direccion de la gran parque, disenado por Balzaretto en lugar de los jardines a la italiana anterior.

Experto en la creacion de espectaculares vistas panoramicas, el arquitecto abrio una serie de puntos de vista "telescopica" en el fondo de una vegetacion arborea muy espontaneo en medio de las cuales destacan las especies botanicas mas diversos.

Al final del parque indica el mausoleo gotico disenado por Carlo Maciachini de Giacomo Poldi Pezzoli en el siglo XIX. Dentro del parque se encuentra la iglesia romanica de Santa Maria di Loppia, una vez conectado a un pequeno claustro fue destruido cuando se abrio amplia avenida de cipreses que cruza el promontorio de Bellagio de Villa Giulia hasta Loppia.

La informacion historica
En una posicion privilegiada entre la entrada y Loppia el pueblo de San Giovanni, Villa Taverna fue construido por el conde Paolo Taverna a finales del siglo XVIII. De la taberna fue alquilada a Francesco Melzi d'Eril, vice-presidente de la Republica Cisalpina, que vivio alli mientras trabajaba en la construccion de la cercana Villa Melzi. En el siglo XIX, la propiedad fue vendida a los nobles que el Poldi Pezzoli se expanden con la adicion de dos cuerpos laterales conectadas por tuneles al edificio principal. Unos anos mas tarde, el parque que lo rodea ha sido disenado por el arquitecto Ingles Balzaretto Jose reorganizado. Posteriormente, la villa fue vendida a Trivulzio y luego, en 1941, a Gerli.
