I went to take the Pentax in to get new seals. etc and two weeks later it was given back to me with the report that it was "in extreme disrepair with impact damage", and that no work had been done to it (with the exception of replacing the missing film advancer). Having never used it myself, I wondered if that meant that the camera was unusable, which would have been very, very sad. So, off I went to the drugstore to buy the cheapest roll of 35mm film possible, loaded the camera and carried it around with me for a day, then took it back to the drugstore for cheap ol' 1 hr photo development. And voila!

The camera works perfectly. And I am totally in love with it. There is a warmth and depth to film that I am convinced does not exist in the digital world.

This is by far the best screen recording software out there. I should know, I've been using it since before the pictured version which was purchased in 2003. That's 8 years! I remember my first series of screencasts was on AppleWorks 6.2. Posted them on the web with the nifty website posting feature in Studio back in the day. Definitely ahead of its time.

You could say I was an early adopter in the educational screencasting gig.

I've signed up for the screencasting summer camp in Michigan. Should be a hoot! Now, I wish I could find my v.1.0 disk!

A very close friend was married this past weekend in a ceremony that included components of Native American traditions. It was a fabulous event to witness. Part of the tradition included the couple giving symbolic gifts to the guests. Vergy's gift to the women, as well as to five of us men who are close to her and would 'get' what these items meant, was this vessel of water, a candle/votive, stones, and a chime (seen in the next photo). I realize this is not a very good photograph (especially in light of the moving motorcycle which I tried to crop out as best I could) but I did want to share the photo for all its cultural content. I love the colorful scene, the beautiful arabic script and scrolled artwork, the interesting signs (the yellow one for a dental office and the blue one for Bactrian camel rides in the desert), the open cart used as taxi service and the woman veiled with her paranje. (You might need to view in large format to appreciate some of these details.)

An old family Carte de Visite photograph album

A wonderful leather-bound photo album, dating to the Victorian period. The clasp is missing and the cover is worn, but like all old books, it holds a special sort of magic.
It was designed to display 'carte de visite" or CDV cards, which were small photographs mounted on thick board, produced by the many various photographic studios that were established in the mid to late 19th century. It is possible to date, fairly accurately, these cards by their shape, and also by the range of designs that were printed on the backs of the cards by the studios.

Scottish National Gallery & Edinburgh Castle

The Scottish National Gallery and the Royal Scottish Academy are constructed on the Mound. This postcard was posted in Letterkenney, County Donegal, Ireland at 5.30pm Sept 25. The year is obliterated. (However it bears an Edward VII stamp - so it must have been posted between 1901 and 1910).

Composed from 9 shots: the base photo has an exposure bracket of ±2EV. Additionally, I added a slight magenta–green white balance bracket, so that's 9 exposures:

Then I used Enfuse to combine the nine images (rendered from RAW to TIFF through Lightroom, of course), to give me what you see here.

New Workspace

I worked all evening moving my desk and setting up my workspace to accommodate my new Cintiq 12wx that I got yesterday. It's kind of a lie, this isn't really where I work. To the left of the photo is a recliner where I do all of my art, and I moved my desk so my cintiq and computer would reach the recliner. I sit crosslegged with the recliner reclined and the laptop on the foot part and the tablet on my lap.

It's way more comfortable than it sounds.

Creative Book – A Field Guide to Objects Found Under Couch Cushions
This creative book was one of the final projects I did in school. The objective was to create a creative book. The concept for this book was a field guide to objects found under couch cushions. There were 6 objects and pages in total. The design of each page was treated like a field guide with an artists rendering of the item, a photograph of it in it's actual habitat, a common name, a scientific name, it's habitat and an actual siting of the object. I decided the book would be interactive and as you read a page you could search for the object under the couch cushions I created paper versions of the object. The goal was that they would be magnetic and when you found the object you could stick it to it's page.
I created the illustrations, took the photos, came up with the name, the scientific name and the habitat. however the siting was just copy text. I also created the pages and the entire couch. The pages slide into the cushions and have paper matching the couch fabric on the blank sides. There was also a color coded system to different types of objects as would be common in a field guide. For example red was for the Remote and the Neighbors Remote. The colors were chosen to match the couch fabric. Before this project I had never built or upholstered a couch.

Financial Aid Guide
Worked with the client on design and production specifications. Typeset the document, created the charts and graphs, and did image selection. Took the project from conception to completion. The client's goal was to guide students through the financial aid process, answering most of the typical questions and making it very easy to read and navigate. The bold headers and photos break up the space and move the eye. The bold headers also help locate the information. The Helpful Hints boxes, call attention to special notes. The clean design with crisp easily identifiable hierarchy makes it easy to read. Photos were chosen to highlight the lushness of the campus and strength of the students. Color choices were based on the University Identity System.

Collaborative Coloring Book: Call for Submissions!

Inspired by all of the super-cool group projects going on around the Web, I thought I’d toss my hat in the ring and start one as well! The idea? A collaborative coloring book!

So if you’re up for it, here’s what let’s do:

1) Send me your jpeg file (around 400 x 400 pixels, no larger than 2,000 kb) of a black-and-white picture at jpoundstone-at-gmail-dot-com. Make the subject line Coloring Book Contribution. Just one each for now please! **PLEASE NOTE** Your submission can be a drawing (or tracing of a photo!),or it can be a connect-the-dots, a maze, or a puzzle - you decide! Not being able to draw is *not* a good excuse not to participate! : )

2) Last day for sending stuff will be Monday, February 28

3) I’ll compile images, and then send an electronic copy of the book (as a PDF) to everyone who submitted a picture. I may reduce or enlarge your work to fit pages, but will not change it in any other way – I’ll also give you credit (of course!!) and will include your URL if you’d lke.

4) Since by the time everyone gets a virtual copy of the coloring book it will be March, let’s have the theme be The Return of Spring.

5) Once everyone has their copy of the coloring book in March, everyone will be coloring pages….let’s plan to put up at least one colored-in picture on each of our sites during the month of March. I’ll post an entry here around then, and people can leave comments with links to their pics.
