THE food industry is being squeezed from all sides. Last year prices for milk, eggs, corn, wheat, oils and almost all other edible commodities climbed to unprecedented levels. They are still rising, although at a slower pace. The prices of electricity and fuel are also on the increase, which makes processing and distribution more expensive. And passing on higher costs is not easy when customers too are feeling the pinch, as unemployment rises, the value of their homes falls, and inflation erodes their purchasing power.

In one sense, food is recession-proof, since people have to eat in good times and bad. What is more, over the past 30 years the share of food in American and European household spending has fallen from an average of 30% to less than 10%, so consumers do not care about price hikes as much as they did in the past. Even so, they are responding to the economic gloom by changing what they eat, where they eat and where they buy their groceries.

Martin Deboo, an analyst at Investec Securities, a stockbroker, uses the well-worn but apt analogy of the “perfect storm” to describe the industry's predicament. Those best positioned to weather it include multinational companies with diversified customer bases, such as Nestlé, Unilever and Danone, as well as retailers that focus on low prices, such as America's Wal-Mart. Among the losers are posh grocers such as Whole Foods Market, a firm based in Texas which specialises in fancy, often organic food (see chart). The downturn also hurts smaller companies that do not have the benefits of scale, depend too much on customers in a single country or region, and do not add much value to the commodities they process.

Nestlé, the world's biggest food firm, has so far coped well with the rise in commodity prices. Its sales around the world grew 7% last year compared with an average of 1.8% for the industry. Like most of its rivals, the firm has passed some of the price increases on to its clients. But it was better prepared for inflation than most. “We saw this coming, so we hedged by forward-buying raw materials,” says François-Xavier Perroud, Nestlé's spokesman.

Far-sighted and nimble sourcing, needless to say, has become more important than ever. Nestlé, which uses lots of milk making baby formula and chocolate bars, buys it under contract directly from farmers, rather than on the open market, where prices jumped by as much as 50% last year. It has also changed the recipe of some of its goodies to reduce their milk content.

But even clever purchasing is not enough to help makers of lightly processed or products, which tend to have slender margins. So Nestlé is getting out of the business of making basic products such as tomato purée and cocoa paste. It is also putting a huge pasta factory at Sansepolcro in Italy up for sale, though it will continue to use much of its output, and to sell fresh pasta dishes, sauces and other more profitable Italian products under the Buitoni brand.

Kraft, one of America's biggest food firms, is struggling with the soaring prices of its ingredients. The cost of these jumped by 9% or $1.3 billion last year, taking a bite out of profits. The Illinois-based company says it is working hard to defray the extra expense by saving money elsewhere. But it believes its best defence against rising costs is to go on the attack, with products and marketing that are better suited to leaner times. For example, the company has changed the recipe and packaging of Miracle Whip, a salad dressing and sandwich spread that is advertised as having the taste of mayonnaise with half the fat. It now comes in a plastic jar instead of a glass one, and has a wider opening that allows buyers to scrape out the very last glob. It now contains less soya oil, which is both fattening and expensive, and more water, which is slimming and cheap.

Kraft has launched a new pizza called DiGiorno Ultimate, in an effort to lift its DiGiorno brand of frozen pizzas into what it calls the “super premium” category. The idea is to offer consumers a cheaper alternative to eating in pizzerias, which rack up $35 billion in sales each year in America. Customers seem to like it: the DiGiorno Ultimate accounted for a third of all sales of new sorts of frozen pizza last year. To keep the pizzas flying from the freezers this year, Kraft plans to offer individual servings of both its DiGiorno and California Pizza Kitchen brands, aimed at single people who might not enjoy a lonely meal at a pizzeria anyway.

American restaurants are also feeling the effects of the slowing economy, according to a spokeswoman for the National Restaurant Association. The industry is still growing: sales are still forecast to reach $558 billion in 2008. But the rate of growth, at 4.4%, is lower than in previous years. It's not in the picture because I keep it in the freezer at -16ÚC, the best temperature at which to enjoy Vodka. And I sip and savour it's flavour rather than waste it by downing the Vodka in one piss-headed gulp!

new hallway light - back hall

did a little back hall reinvent with this Edison bulb pendant which I converted to plug into the existing light bulb socket. Not a real way to do it, but the ceiling is 10 to 12 feet up of the floor, and the original light bulb fixture is mounted into a curved part of the ceiling where the angle of plaster from bottom of stair meets the flat ceiling - all plastered in, and not where I preferred to mount the new fixture from anyway. It'll do for now! The warm glow of the new light is so lovely, and the fixture displays nicely to the kitchen when you look at it between the wall and the floating refrigerator. ;)

Tsunami sparked by Chile earthquake swept away fleeing bus full of retirees

PELLUHUE, Chile –

The 40 retirees enjoying summer vacation at a seaside campground nestled under pine trees knew they had to move fast after Chile's powerful earthquake struck.

They didn't make it.

The tsunami came in three waves, surging 200 meters (yards) into this Pacific Ocean resort town and dragging away the bus they'd piled into, hoping to get to high ground.

Most of those inside were tourists, and only five of their bodies had been found by Monday, firefighters and witnesses said.

Pelluhue's horror underscored the destruction wrought by Saturday's pre-dawn 8.8-magnitude quake and the tsunami that ravaged communities along Chile's south-central coast — those closest to the quake's epicenter. Chile's death toll reached 723, and most died in the wine-growing Maule region that includes Pelluhue.

Survivors here found about 20 bodies, and an estimated 300 homes were destroyed. Most residents were aware of the tsunami threat; street signs pointed to the nearest tsunami evacuation route. The ruins of homes, television sets, clothes, dishwaters and dead fish cover the town's black sand beaches.

"We ran through the highest part of town, yelling, 'Get out of your homes!'" said Claudio Escalona, 43, who fled his home near the campground with his wife and daughters, ages 4 and 6.

"About 20 minutes later came three waves, two of them huge, about 6 meters (18 feet) each, and a third even bigger. That one went into everything."

"You could hear the screams of children, women, everyone," Escalona said. "There were the screams, and then a tremendous silence."

Destruction is widespread and food scarce all along the coast — in towns like Talca and Cauquenes, Curico and San Javier. In Curanipe, the local church served as a morgue. In Cauquenes, people quickly buried their dead because the funeral home had no electricity.

President Michelle Bachelet said authorities were flying hundreds of tons of food, water and other basics into the region.

After the quake rocked the gritty port town of Talcahuano, Marioli Gatica and her extended family huddled in a circle on the floor of their seaside wooden home, listening to the radio by a lantern's light.

They heard firefighters urging citizens to stay calm and stay inside.

They heard nothing about a tsunami — until it slammed into their house with an unearthly roar. Gatica's house exploded with water.

The family was swept below the surface, swirling amid loose ship containers and other heavy debris that smashed buildings into oblivion all around them.

"We were sitting there one moment and the next I looked up into the water and saw cables and furniture floating," Gatica said.

Two of the giant containers crushed Gatica's home. A third grounded between the ocean and where she floated, keeping the retreating tsunami from dragging her and other relatives out to sea.

Her 11-year-old daughter, Ninoska Elgueta, clung to a tree as the wave retreated.

All the family survived except Gatica's 76-year-old mother, Nery Valdebenito, Gatica said. "I think my mother is trapped beneath" the house.

Firefighters with search dogs examined the ruins of her home. The group leader drew his finger across his neck: No one alive there.

Close to 80 percent of Talcahuano's 180,000 people are homeless, with 10,000 homes uninhabitable and hundreds more destroyed, Mayor Gaston Saavedra said.

"The port is destroyed. The streets, collapsed. City buildings, destroyed," Saavedra said.

In Concepcion, the biggest city near the epicenter, rescuers drilled through thick concrete to look for survivors trapped inside a toppled 70-unit apartment building. Firefighters had pulled 25 survivors and nine bodies from the structure.

Chile's defense minister has said the navy made a mistake by not immediately activating a tsunami warning.

He said port captains who did call warnings in several coastal towns saved hundreds of lives.

In the village of Dichato, teenagers drinking on the beach were the first to shout the warning when they saw a horseshoe-shaped bay empty about an hour after the quake.

They ran through the streets, screaming.

Police joined them, using megaphones.

The water rose steadily, surging above the second floors of homes and lifting them off their foundations. Cars were stacked three high in the streets.

Miles inland along a river valley, cows munched next to marooned boats, refrigerators, sofas and other debris.

"The maritime radio said there wouldn't be a tsunami," said Rogilio Reyes, who was warned off by the teenagers.

Dichato Mayor Eduardo Aguilera said 49 people were missing and 800 homes were destroyed. Some people fled to high ground, only to return too early and get caught by the tsunami, he said.

The World Health Organization said it expected the death toll to rise as communications improve.

For survivors, it said access to health services will be a major challenge.

I woke up this morning to a UConn alert text message that was delivered to my inbox around 3:30AM last night. Our university instated these text messages two years ago as a way to let the university know of serious incidents that have occurred on campus. They are also used to instruct us, in the case of an emergency, of where to seek safety and refuge.

Upon logging on to our university website, I discovered that there was a stabbing last night that resulted in the death of one of our students. According to the news report, a fire alarm was pulled during a university sponsored event in our Student Union. Upon evacuation of the building, a fight broke out between two groups of students. Two people were stabbed, one of which was Jasper Howard. Jasper Howard, a Miami native, plays cornerback for our football team and had just played in our Homecoming game against Louisville that same day. He passed away early this morning with the Coach by his side.

Unfortunately, circumstances like this are not uncommon. In my last three years at UConn, I have witnessed the deaths of many of my fellow students. There have been numerous accounts of violence and assaults in our small community. My freshman year, there was hit-and-run in which a drunk driver struck and killed an 18 year-old woman who lived a building that neighbored mine. My sophomore year, there were rapes on campus. Last year, an attempted rape occurred during Spring Weekend that received national attention (and a mention in Jessica Valenti's book The Purity Myth) because of the amount of bystanders that watched the event and did not interfere. And now today, another death has occurred because of an act of senseless violence. This is, by no means, an account of all of the incidents that have occurred on my campus. There are many that receive almost no attention from the news and unfortunately, many that are never even reported.

And so I ask, how many? How many of my collegiate brothers and sisters will be beaten, raped, or killed in the next coming years? How many parents will never see their children return from college? How many empty chairs will be left open at my graduation ceremony to honor those that should have been there? That deserved to be there. That never had the chance. How many more deaths will it take before we stand up as a university, a student body, and a community and scream STOP?

We can all make a difference. You just need to be willing. Today, I stand up as a Uconn Husky and pledge to stop this cycle. Will you stand too?

When the lights go out so does everything else powered by electricity. A month after the power goes down your refrigerator has passed through the science experiment phase and has entered the demonic wormhole arena.

Think of everything that we depend on for our sense of civilization and you’ll soon realize that a significant proportion of that “civilization” is powered by electricity. New Orleanians who returned to the city from their evacuation locations came back with generators if they could. I loaned the two I had to friends who were beginning their restoration efforts. One of them was still using it 5 months later. It drove his power tools, recharged his cell phone, made his coffee and cooked his dinner.

The initial damage to the power grid in New Orleans from Katrina’s winds was extensive. But when the floodwalls broke the damage to the electrical systems of the city escalated. The flooding took out the sub-stations. The transformer complexes behind the cyclone fences keep us out, but aren’t very good at keeping flood waters at bay.

Our energy provider, Entergy Corporation, filed for bankruptcy protection on September 23. They knew then that the damage to the system was going to financially overwhelm their ability to cope. I’m surprised that there’s enough juice running through the lines to power the computer I’m writing this piece on!

On every foray into the damaged and flooded areas of the city I have found and photographed downed and shattered electrical poles, transformer sub-stations and the connections between them and the houses that depended on the supply of their power.

The power supply is still fragile. We have numerous brown outs and out ‘n’ outs. We had to get power supply backups for our studio computers in fear that the power surges which accompany a return of supply would fry our machines.

I found all of the parts you see in this panel on the streets of New Orleans and along the beaches of the Gulf Coast. The light bulbs are new!

Never take the power supply for granted. It comes at a huge cost, on a lot of levels, to all of us. Where does your power come from?

i put my feet up and took a break every day this week!

although this is the only photographic evidence of it, really. i took a bit of a break from flickr (in case you didn't notice), and just a break in general, to recharge some very worn mental batteries. it did me good, most definitely.

Sam's Springhouse

In 1853 Sam Houston and his wife moved to Independence, Texas. This springhouse survives from the time the Houston's lived on the property.

A springhouse was used for refrigeration of meats, dairy and fruit that would otherwise spoil. Water from a nearby spring was diverted into the building to keep the food cool throughout the year.

In 1985, she was sold for scrapping to Chinese shipbreakers in Huangpu.

1920s Art Deco Moriyama Coverd Box Made In Japan

Here's something you won't see every day!
A rare Moriyama Mori-Machi Pottery Divided Covered Box with a simple handpainted Cherry Blossom Design in bright lime green and black over a vanilla white body.

This 1920s Japanese storage box is just gorgeous! It's bigger than it looks in these photos. It's 10" long x 6" wide x 5.5" tall. It's divided inside into two sections and it covers like a shoe box. There's a 1.5" knob recessed into the cover and carry handles recessed into the ends of the box.

This set has some checking in the glaze and a dark spot on the cover, but that's to be expected in any antique pottery and it doesn't distract from the beauty of this set at all.

I've had this pretty old Japanese icebox storage box for a very very long time and it's far too beautiful to be stsshed away in an upper cupboard like it's been for the past 15 years at my place.
These big boxes were designed to be used for food storage in Iceboxes back in the days before refrigeration; when the iceman came to deliver a big block of handcut ice to the lady of the house every few days during the summer months for the icebox.

Here's a little bit about Mariyama Pottery in case you're interested in learning a little more about it:

Moriyama Pottery was located in Mori-Machi in Shizuoka Prefecture.
Moriyama Pottery was established in 1911 by Hidekichi Nakamura who was taught pottery making by Seison Suzuki. There are currently four studios continuing the Moriyama tradition in and around Mori-machi and they are Seison, Seizon, Nakamura and Tame.

This wonderful piece is stamped with a crown with a wreath of leaves similar to the wreath found on the Noritake stamp. This stamp is marked “Moriyama Hand Paint Japan” and it dates to the 1920.
