Sam's Springhouse
In 1853 Sam Houston and his wife moved to Independence, Texas. This springhouse survives from the time the Houston's lived on the property.
A springhouse was used for refrigeration of meats, dairy and fruit that would otherwise spoil. Water from a nearby spring was diverted into the building to keep the food cool throughout the year.
Sam Houston, writing to his friend Washington Miller in 1853:
My Dear Miller,
I bought the premises of Mr. Hines on the Hill to the left as you go out of Independence, consisting of two hundred acres inclosed, and one hundred & sixty five acres of timbered land adjoining the town tract—all for $4000, in short payments. My friend, I did not think that Austin, or anywhere else presented the same advantages in an Educational point of view, that Independence does.
