What you see is what you get

What you see is what you get

A weekend or two ago I helped a friend shoot a wedding at the World Trade Center in downtown Portland. I have wanted to take photos in this building for a really long time, so it was an easy decision to make to help him shoot here. All my ideas for photographs in this place all revolved around pinhole photos taken during the day. I had no idea they lit the place up like this. I was mostly interested in the angling beams that criss-cross here and there along the bridge and the upper hall. So imagine my delight when I arrived that evening and found lights everywhere.

This was either my 9th or 10th wedding I have photographed. Enough to make me feel fairly comfortable doing them, but far from making me a grizzled veteran. They are a lot of hard work. I remember shooting my brother's wedding a couple of years ago and coming home from that and sleeping for about 10 hours.

Anyway, I don't generally make a point of offering to shoot weddings, but somehow word keeps getting spread that I seem to know how to use a camera, so I keep finding myself in these situations. Not that I am complaining.

For me, one of the most difficult aspects of shooting a wedding is dealing with other people's concept of how their wedding should be shot. It means that you often have to adapt your normal creative vision to satisfy another's needs. Which is ok, I understand that part. But at the same time it is hard to shoot just to shoot. I think my least favorite part of weddings is doing the large group formals. My favorite is being able to wander around during the reception and capture the fun moments. Although the one-on-one formals with the bride and groom can also be quite fun too. Anyway, it is a challenge and I enjoy challenges. It is certainly much different than photographing a waterfall, and I like that.

I was giving a few wedding pointers to a customer the other day at work who was getting ready to shoot his first wedding, and that conversation made me think I should post a few of those here for those who are still pretty green at it themselves. So here goes:

Be mindful of how much you are shooting. Don't overshoot. You waste time and energy. What I mean is, when you are under the pressure to photograph a wedding, there is the real fear that you will miss something, so the natural reaction is to shoot everything. This is a hard tendency to break, and while I encourage against becoming stingy with what you photograph, I also highly encourage discipline. Take a split second to consider what you are about to shoot and ask yourself if the wedding party is really going to want a picture of that. One good example of this is during the reception when the bride and groom sit down to eat, don't photograph them. Photographing people eating never looks good. Ever. In fact this is a prime moment for you to get off your feet and get a bite to eat too. Keep fed, keep your energy up and make sure you don't run out of gas for the rest of the night. We actually printed a roll of wedding photos a couple of weeks ago where the photographer took pictures of the bride flossing her teeth before the wedding. Again, I am no grizzled veteran but I think it is safe to say this opportunity can be safely passed by as well.

When photographing group formals always overshoot. The bigger the group the more photos you should take of it because someone is always going to blink, look away, make a funny face or something.

Communicate with the bride and groom beforehand. Once everything gets going, you always seem to end up with less time than you thought. I like to stress this upon about-to-be-newlyweds that I am going to photograph. Between herding people around and getting them posed, time flies. One thing that seems to work well is have the bride and groom prioritize the photos they want before hand. That way you know going into that getting the bride with great-aunt Mildred is a must-have.

Work hard at getting the CYA (pro lingo for "Cover your ass") shots. Once you get these out of the way, then you can be a bit freer to mix it up, get experimental, try other things. Everybody expects and wants the standard CYA shots, but it is often the unplanned, spontaneous photos that can be the best at capturing the day.

And finally as a piece of advice for those looking for a wedding photographer, my advice is find one that will shoot a mix of film and digital for you. This is how I prefer to shoot weddings. I like doing the formal, important shots on film, specifically medium format. The quality is better and having a physical negative that can be tucked away safely for grandchildren to find is a treasure few of us have the foresight to truly appreciate. Digital is excellent for its feedback and flexibility when shooting on the run. Find a good photographer who will combine these for you, and preferrably give you the film at the end of the night. This might cost you a bit more but it is money well spent

Test shots with the new Canon 40D

Test shots with the new Canon 40D

I finally bit the bullet and bought a new camera body. A Canon 40D.

Quite a step up from the 300D (aka the _original_ Canon Digital Rebel) I've had for 3-4 years now. That camera was a refurb, got it cheap, and it served me extremely well as a learning camera. Canon has really lowered the bar on the new Rebel cameras since, so I decided to step it up a notch and go for the "xxD" series, even though I still have a lot to learn about digital photography.

I researched the 50D and decided that for $300-400 more, it was not worth the extra money.

Some key features I considered and why I chose the 40D over the 50D:
1) The 50D has a Digic IV processor over the 40D's Digic III processor (I'm not advanced enough to care, yet... )
2) 50D - 15 megapixels vs. 40D - 10.1 mp (I have never made a print larger than 8x10 and have no plans to, yet ...)
3) The 50D has a better LCD (After comparing the two, I didn't notice much of a difference, though I wasn't holding them side by side)

Since the 50D is the most up to date camera for Canon's semi-pro line, prices for the 40D are much more reasonable right now. I wanted to stay under $1000.
5) I don't need to be on the cutting edge of semi-pro DSLR's. Especially not for ~$1300 ;) I'm still learning.

I did a little shopping on eBay and other sites and found that the going rate for a used 40D fell into a reasonable price range for me. I lucked out and found this one on Craigslist. Under a year old with the original receipt and warranty cards. All packaging included. Also included an extra Canon battery. BONUS: The Dxx series takes the same batteries as the Rebel 300D!

The guy who sold it to me was extremely nice and let me use it for a long time, even letting me use his computer to see the test shots on his large monitor. He also gave me a Magic Lantern DVD guide for the camera as well, which is pretty handy ... As long as the thing doesn't blow up in the next month or two, I can't believe that it's in the condition it's in. It still has warranty left on it, too.

I think the original EOS Rebel came out in 2002 or 2003, so I was long overdue for an upgrade. Regardless, I'm still shocked at how much smoother the operation of the 40D is and how fast it focuses.

The best part for me is the physical feel of the 40D. The plastic body on the original Rebel made it feel like a toy - it bothered me from day one. Having some aluminum with rubberized grip on the 40D makes you feel like you're operating some good machinery. I just hope it doesn't make me feel a little too confident so I don't bounce it around ;)

More to come...

Snow angels and a snowy bridge

Snow angels and a snowy bridge

I am taking a short break from working on images and listening to the news to post this one. It did not turn out quite as successfully as I had hoped, but enough so that I figured it was fun enough to post. I do not often post self-portraits, mainly because I just don't often take them, which means I am not as practiced at them as I am at some of the other types of photography I do. But when the inspiration strikes me, I'll grab one here or there.

It is not often that it snows heavily enough to cover the bridge, it is less often that I feel safe enough laying down in the middle of the bridge for a photo. Traffic was still chugging its way across the bridge, even in this storm we recently had, but the gap between cars was often more than enough for a couple of photos from the middle. In fact I walked all the way across the bridge and back using the road as opposed to the sidewalk, it was a wonderful perspective to enjoy a familiar stroll from.

As a funny side note, I borrowed a friend's Canon 5D Mark II again the other night and spent an entire evening on the bridge shooting photos without even taking my tripod. It was great. I had hoped to post some of them by now, except I chose to shoot in RAW, then found out my RAW converter does not support the new Canon 5D files. Neither does the version of Photoshop CS2 I have at work. I tried downloading a plug-in for both with no success. I also tried downloading Adobe's DNG converter, but I am not quite sure where that went after the installation ran, it seemed to disappear. I could go out searching on the internet a bit more and eventually hunt down a program I am sure, but at this point I am kind of tired of trying to find a way to convert these files. I think I will just wait until my friend gets back into town on Thursday as he has the software the camera came with and I can install that. But sheesh, I thought digital was supposed to be easier and faster... at this point I have gotten film I turned in that same day developed and printed.

So yes, a slight dig at the "convenience" of digital photography, I just had to balance out the good things I had been saying about that camera lately. Every camera, even pretty amazing ones like that Canon have their pros and cons.

Five friends and myself went out to watch the geminids meteors shower, so we arrived to "The Pond" before 3:30am not after got loss a couple of meters from the pond.

I planned to go to this pond to take good photos, but there was to much pollution so almost I didn't grab my camera from the car's trunk. However it was a good place to see the stars. I realize that my first error is that the terrain was to flat to this kind of photos and the current trees ha a lot of leafs and with the wind weren't apporpiate for long sxposures shots.

This was a the first trial to get some shapes in the scene. This was the first meteor that we saw since I set the tripod in place).

It was huge if you consider that it was taken @17mm

A Little Sketchy

A Little Sketchy

My first attempt at a stereoscopic timelapse. Had a few problems. The tripods were getting in the way of eachother. (I used 2 cameras and 2 tripods) Parts of the photos don't line up right. Best thing to do is just focus on the top of the candle. And, for some reason one of the cameras stopped taking photos after 23 shots. So this clip is only 23 frames. I looped and reversed them to make the video a little longer. This was just a test. I've just build a double mount tonight. (so I can mount 2 cameras on one tripod) Took some shots. Haven't taken a look at them yet.

If you take a photo looking through your view finder and not the lcd screen (using your left eye) and line something up using your cross hair. Then take the same shot using your right eye, (moving the camera to your right eye not moving your head) lining up the cross hair again. Put the photos side by side and there you go! But... that's not all. To see the 3D image you have to cross your eyes so you get 2 images. Since there is all ready 2 images (2 masks) you will see 4 masks. You then slowly uncross your eyes until the 2 masks in the middle overlap, then you can bring the image into focus and it will be 3D! You should see 3 photos, a normal one on the left and right, and a 3D one in the middle. If you can do a "magic eye" then you should be able to do this.

Recording the school Gala concert went really well. We set the correct date/time on all the digital video cameras, adjusted the white balance, completed all the sound tests checked for the best camera locations, got in position early with some good tripods, spare batteries and film cartridges in our pockets. Baileys and a lesson in mobile post processing

Today in the app store, there was a featured app called snapseed which was endorsed by the likes of Scott Kelby and other professional photography gurus so I said well, might as well, since I have $60 of itunes credit sitting in my account.

Boot it up, connected the iPad camera connection kit and 'impoorted' a raw. (I say 'imported' because instead of being awesome and working with raw, the iPad imports RAW as jpg.)

The first thing I noticed was the picture seemed small. And on export, I had confirmed that for some reason the app had instead imported the thumbnail instead of the full size jpg. RAGE! Now SnapSeed has been on the market for only about a week now so I'll let the devs (Niksoftware, who are apparently awesome devs) work out the kinks. Fortunately, I also bought an app called Photogene which picked up the imported jpg properly with no problems.

I did a 5 second flick through with filters and adjustments in photogenes then put it through Snapseed for some filters and the border.

What do you think of the result?

Ann and her 'new' Polaroid toys

Ann and her 'new' Polaroid toys

My daughter still loves Polaroid cameras and taking pictures with them. Some of my friends found out she'd take any of their Polaroid cast-offs so gave them to me to take to her. It was like watching a kid at Christmas time, seeing her expertly open and close them, and hear her tell me their names and what they can do (this one doesn't focus well, this one does).

That big thing in three of the photos is a copier of Polaroid prints. Basically it takes copies of Polaroid pictures that have already been taken (Ann figured out). She's not sure she can get the film for it but it is a novelty item. She has found a source of film for some of the cameras, and while I was there we went to the Blue Moon photo shop in the St. John area of Portland, OR and she bought 31 flash cubes! Now she'll be able to take brighter pictures in low light situations. She had never used the cubes and after she used the first one was surprised at how it looked after being used!

While we were there I talked to one of the young salesmen (they're all young to me now) about a pistol grip tripod head. That's what I want to get on my next tripod.

Pentax "Ten Lens Shootout" 50mm Test - Wide Open

Pentax

View the image at 100% after reading below, or you will go blind and learn nothing by looking at this small image above. lol

Premise: I wanted to know, unscientifically and for my personal edification, which of my 10, yes.. T-E-N Pentax mountable 50mm's is the best wide open. Secondarily I wanted to know about the bokeh of each, with emphasis on specular highlights such as points of light.

Method: I composed a simple yet attractive scene to challenge these lenses. A table in light with a dark background. I set a Kodak E100 box at frame center with my Konica Auto Reflex atop a photo album and another roll of film below them. In the rear by 3 feet an old white lamp and behind that by 10 feet a string of led Christmas tree lamps. Each shot was shot three times and the best shot picked for comparison snipping.

VIEWER"S GUIDE: What you see above are four rows of results.
The top row is CENTER sharpness at Wide Open. (blue film box)
The second row down is 3/4 to edge of frame sharpness at Wide Open. (camera body)
The third row is mid-frame bokeh Wide Open, with a small inset of the prism hump of the Camera for Chromatic Aberration (purple fringing) performance.
The bottom row is the same bokeh patch as the row above except that it is one f-stop down, again there is inset the prism hump sample.

Error: The f2.0 patch for the Pentax Super Takumar SMC f1.4 (third in from right) is incorrect, it is a needless duplicate of the f1.4 sample. :(
Note: the last two lenses were only shot wide open at f1.4 because they are automatic only and would require me gluing down the aperture pin for "stop down metering.

Gear: Pentax K100D 6MP CCD a ISO 200 mounted on tripod with I.S. turned off. K-mount-Screwmount adapter used for the 4 screw mount lenses.

Pentax-A 50mm f1.4
Pentax-M 50mm f1.4
Pentax-M 50fmm f1.7
Vivitar 50mm f1.8
Yashinon-DX 50mm f1.7
Sears 50mm f2
Pentax-M 50mm f2
Pentax Super Takumar SMC 50mm f1.4
Yashinon-DS 50mm f1.4
Yashinon-DS-M 50mm f1.4

RESULTS:
As expected:
1. The Pentax-A f 1.4 has some of the most pleasant bokeh, even stopped down thanks to it's 8 blades.
2. As rumored online, the Pentax-M f1.7 is a very sharp lens, even wide open!
3. The off brand lenses are not as sharp across the frame.

The unexpected:
1. The Vivitar f1.8 (fourth column) is extreemly sharp and contrasty at frame center. BUT is the worst performer away from the center. It also has very low CA (purple fringing) on the prism hump inset samples, even less than the Pentax-A & Pentax-M lenses.
2. The Pentax-M f2 is no joke. It's a solid but quiet performer and seems to have great CA control.

The weird:
1. I assure you the bottom bokeh shot for the Pentax-M f1.4 is at f2. It appears from the bokeh though that it is not and is for some reason producing smaller circles of light than the "A" version of the same lens. Hmm.
2. The bokeh of the Pentax-M 50mm f1.7 is a little unattractive in my opinion when stopped down to f2. It has a type of curved aperture blades which create a bit of a "toothed" appearance to the bokeh.

Conclusion:
If you want versatility, automatic aperture capability, maximum depth-of -field control (outside of splurging on a f1.2 lens) and bragging want general rights.....then the Pentax-A 50mm f1.4 is for you.
If you want center only sharpness and like a "swirlios" effect to your edge bokeh, then the Vivitar 50mm f1.8 is your wonky little buddy. Sharp and contrasty and cheap!
If you want a nice thin lens, with good sharpness across the frame and good CA (purple fringing) control and want an un-notable user experience, then the Pentax-M f2 is ready to please you, even at f2.
If you want a lens that gives you the smoothest barrel turn and most solid retro feel and "look" at the price of gaining more "glow" than more modern lenses...then the Pentax Super Takumar SMC 50mm f1.4 will give you the nice glow to your f1.4 people portraits.
If you want a "relatively unknown" lens that almost matches the legendary sharpness of the Pentax f1.7, and all this in a screwmount playful package...the Yashinon DX 50mm f1.7 will take you off to la-la land in a side-car of sharpness.

THE BOTTOM LINE - WHAT I WANT
I want what I don't have. A nice Pentax-A 50mm f1.7. Why? The Pentax-M 50mm f1.7 performance is impressive!. And think about it.... if I want shallow depth of field while staying away from CA (purple fringing) and the typical "wide-open glow", then a good f1.7lens shot wide-open beats an f1.4 lens that must be stopped down to f2 anyways.
P.S.- I hope the aperture blades of the "A"version of the Pentax f1.7 are a bit better designed because the bokeh, specifically specular highlights are a bit disappointing.

Oh, yes...one more thing.. I want a Pentax digital FULL FRAME camera so I can shoot these as normal lenses!!!!

Enhanced Ida and Dactyl

Enhanced Ida and Dactyl

Date: 28 Aug 1993

This color picture is made with images taken by the Galileo spacecraft about 14 minutes before its closest approach to asteroid 243 Ida on August 28, 1993. The range from the spacecraft was about 10,500 km(6500 miles). The images used are from the sequence in which Ida's moon was originally discovered; the moon is visible to the right of the asteroid. This picture is made through the 4100-angstrom (violet), 7560-angstrom (infrared) and 9680-angstrom (infrared) filters.

The color is enhanced in the sense that the CCD camera is sensitive to near-infrared wavelengths of light beyond human vision; a natural color picture of this asteroid would appear mostly gray. Shadings in the image indicate changes in illumination angle on the many steep slopes of this irregular body, as well as subtle color variations due to differences in the physical state and composition of the soil (regolith). There are brighter areas, appearing bluish in the picture, around craters on the upper left end of Ida, around the small bright crater near the center of the asteroid, and near the upper righthand edge (the limb). This is a combination of more reflected blue light and greater absorption of near-infrared light, suggesting a difference in the abundance or composition of iron-bearing minerals in these areas

Ida's moon also has a deeper near-infrared absorption and a different color in the violet than any area on this side of Ida. The moon is not identical in spectral properties to any area of Ida in view here, although its overall similarity in reflectance and general spectral type suggests that it is basically made of the same rock types. These data, combined with study of further imaging data and more detailed spectra from the Near Infrared Mapping Spectrometer, may allow scientists to determine whether the larger parent body (of which Ida, its moon, and some other asteroids are fragments) was a heated, differentiated object or made of relatively unaltered primitive chondritic material.

Superheadz Golden Half Black Mountain 35mm Film Camera

Now in "Black Mountain" colorway with small tree pattern all-over. Not only is the Golden Half the smallest 35mm camera in the world, it also takes half-frame pictures. By "half-frame" I mean that one standard picture frame is divided into two, therefore you get two separate shots per exposure. Not only does that mean you get double the number of exposures (especially great when considering developing costs), you also get to play with diptychs: finding connections between the pictures, planned or unplanned. In addition, the image quality is just right, a sober tone with slight out of focus on the edges (a very elegant shot). Recommended.

It's so cute!

Manfrotto tripod 190XDB 2

Manfrotto tripod 190XDB 2

I wanna to show you my new Manfrotto tripod. I bought it last week and I've been trying it ever since. It was quite hard to find cause in my city isn't much variety of shops where you can buy camera accesories. I like this tripod since the first time I saw it!! It isn't very heavy (made with aluminium), is very stable, compact and the maximum height is 1.50 mt.

I also bought the head Joystick 222, and is amazing!! With the head reaches more than 1.60 mt. This head is easy to use, fast, robust, and if you grip the handle you can positioned the camera as you want. I like to go around with the tripod, I shot some incredibles pictures at night!! I'm very happy with the purchase. I recommend this Manfrotto 190XDB tripod. Is superb!

this is a present from my uncle. it's a smith-victor propod iv, and it's pretty awesome.

when i found out i was getting it, i balked because it was expensive. not as expensive as some of the other tripods i've seen, but still, more expensive than i thought any tripod was worth.

i was wrong.

this thing is like that guy in the old sunday kung-fu movies... the one who, when he planted his feet, couldn't be moved. yeah, you know the guy i'm talking about.

when you lock it, it stays locked. no travel, no wiggle, no sway, nothing. it becomes one with itself. it's so zen.

it'll support 22lbs, WAY more than i'll ever need. but it's nice knowing that when a bald eagle uses my camera as a perch, at least the tripod will support it.

so i've had this for maybe a few hours, and i've already nerded out and did a few tests. i took pictures of a light fixture... 200mm, f32, 15sec exposures. one each on the old, plastic cheapo tripod i used to use and this tripod. and you can see the difference. it's amazing.

so if you're wondering if the expensive tripods are worth it, they are. IF you're going to use them. if you just want something to take snapshots with, the cheapo models work just fine. but if you want to do something like star trails, spend the money.

even though i didn't.

Rusted Yellow

Rusted Yellow

I'm having a lot of fun with the Digital Harinezumi. This probably has a lot to do with how much it reminds me of an analogue toy camera. When in still capture mode, you do not get a LCD viewfinder mode, you have to estimate (and anyone who uses toy cameras will know that their viewfinders are less than accurate) you have the option of turning off the review mode of the camera so that you won't know what you have got until you download the images to your computer (so I suppose that's the digital equivalent of waiting to get your film developed).
In movie mode, they're is no audio so to speak (well there is a bit of white noise, I think it may have been fun if they had the option of the whirr of an old 8mm camera sound as well as the movies generated by the camera remind me of those)
The colours are kick-ass funky and very reminiscent of some sort of weird cross processing type of thing going on...
and as you can see from some of my initial test images, the macro function (two choices of focus here macro or normal) works very well. There is nice grain in lower lighting conditions, reminding me more of film grain that digital grain. I could go on and will, when I do an 'out of the box' video review of this little electric hedgehog later on this week....

Game Boy Printer

My game boy printer is still working. I had it since I was 10. It that moment I find it magical, to be able to take pictures and print them yourself, today is not a big deal, for me is a beautiful process.

The paper would never be defeated by the digital.
