France Stuck in a Calanque My friends and I took a trip to France years ago. JT and Steven had been there before and were leading the trip. They decided that we should visit a beach they knew. The beach was located in a calanque, a finger of water surrounded by cliffs. To get to the beach, we had to climb up and down through several other calanques, each progressively harder. By the time we got to our destination calanque, we had been climbing for a number of hours. My legs felt like jelly and I'd skinned up one of my shins. Just before we were ready to sit down and enjoy and I was about to bask in my uncharacteristically athletic accomplishment, an elderly lady wearing bedroom slippers walked by us. I was stunned! I said, "What the H*LL!" JT and Steven explained that she must have taken the boat. "There's A BOAT?!" My friend, Dan dove into the water and was immediately stung by a jellyfish. I decided that it was best to just sit, relax and enjoy the admittedly gorgeous view. We watched climbers on the other side of the calanque scale the walls using ropes and other gear. When it was time to leave, I wanted to take the boat back but we had brought no money with us. The only way back was to climb out. Up the cliff was, of course, even harder than down. At the point at which the photo was taken, I am standing on a tree growing out of the side of the cliff. I can't step back down because I can't see where I am stepping. There are no footholds that I can find in front of me. My arms are stretched up over my head and I'm clutching a small outcrop of rock. At this point, all of my fellow travelers, who by the way are all male and as a consequence it is safe to say have more upper body strength than me, are yelling at me to pull myself up. There was no way that I could do that. If you could see behind the sunglasses, you would see that I am crying. I was telling them to go on without me and send for help when they got back to town. In the meantime, I would just stand on the tree. My friend, Dan (I lurves ya, Dan!) decided that now was the time to take my picture because, he said, "I knew you would be alright and then you would want a picture because you would be proud of your accomplishment." I can't say I'm actually proud. More grateful that JT guided my feet to his shoulders and stood up while Steven hauled me up by the arms, thereby saving my life. I promise...I will not do that again! Unites arived on scene to find a 3-story wooden frame structure engulfed in flames. The fire grew to 4 alarms. Many other departments helped contain the fire. New Dark I ordered these shades for a way discounted price a few weeks ago and they just arrived today. I really like them so far. They're very solid and they are a lot darker than my other aviators. I don't know why I'm talking so much about my sunglasses, but if you knew me well, this shouldn't surprise you. On a different, sad note, I think my hard drive in my MacBook Pro is slowly dying. I ordered a new one. I did a full backup of my drive last night so all my photos and stuff are safe. I tried to export a batch of photos from Napa last night and Lightroom yelled at me saying my drive was full even though I should have 8GB's free. iTunes did the same thing later when I was downloading new podcasts. The Future Freaks Me Out I love these lyrics by Motion City Soundtrack, but I wish I could say they were true. In fact, for most aspects of my life the opposite is true: the present freaks me out. You see, I have lived my entire life for the future. And with the goals I have in mind that makes sense. However, it stops me from taking risks. Sometimes it’s a good thing like I don’t go out and do drugs, party, or have sex with random guys because I live for my future. Heck! I’m not even going to get my nose pierced even though I really want to because it may stop me from being able to get the job that I want in the future. But at the same time it stops me from taking risks that may be a good thing. I mean, I can’t predict the future! I don’t know what’s going to happen and if a risk I’m too afraid to take now might make my future better or worse. For instance, if there’s this boy: he’s nice, I love his family, and he isn’t into any bad things. But will I ever take the risk and do something about it? Probably not. I will instead just sit here and continue to worry about my future (in case you haven’t figured it out yet, this is the area of my life in which this quote actually does apply) thinking to myself: “what if I find someone better looking?”, “what if there’s someone that better suits me?”, “what if our futures don’t align?” Oh, but in case you’re wondering, once I do discover that or futures would align I find other excuses. And while I do speak my mind generally in situations like this if I want to say something chances are that I won’t actually say it until it’s too late and is no longer relevant. See the risk in that? I don’t. I just worry so much about how my present will affect my future. It doesn’t help either that I have my family saying “oh don’t get attached to anyone or anything for the next couple of months since you’ll be leaving and will have a whole wide array of opportunities in front of you down in Irvine.” Really now? I know you guys just care about me, but advice in this area of my life is not what I need. Considering you all have done something like this for the one you care about. So let me make my own path, and stop saying things that make me freak out even more about my future. God has only guaranteed me this one day to live, He has not given me tomorrow yet. So why do I continue to live for my tomorrow instead of for today? awesome. so awesome. I know. My hair stylist did such a great job with his hair for this shoot too. Day 176 - New Red Specs Not the best picture, but I got new glasses last night - thanks to LensCrafters and their handing 6months-no-interest credit card. (Yeah! for not having to put off paying other bills!) I hemmed and hawed, as usual, about which frames to get since they didn't have my old ones anymore... I decided that since I wear red more than any other color and I've always been complimented when I wear red I should consider red frames. These jumped out at me and I kept coming back to them even after trying on a million other pairs. They must be the ones! I also got a pair of sunglasses for the first time ever. I've always worn glasses but never have worn sunglasses. I know that seems weird, but I've just never been able to spend the extra $$ to get ones and can't drive without my so I never had sunglasses. I can't wait for a sunny day to try them out! We cut the legs off of our pants, threw our shoes into the ocean. We were bored while eating our alfredo. I'm waiting another 3 hours to upload the rest of my pictures; it gives me time to comment everyone back, and I like waiting until the beginning of the Flickr day :) My daily views are back in the 600's.
