During the session some of the riders returned to the pits to change suspension settings in an attempt to compensate for the simultaneous wet and dry conditions. With ten minutes left in the session, Valentino Rossi on the Ducati came in to swap bikes and performed better with the different set-up to finish the forty five minutes in ninth, Toni Elias on the LCR Honda was tenth. Japanese rider Hiroshi Aoyama on the San Carlo Gresini Honda was 15th while Colin Edwards again retired early after completing 12 laps and finishing the session in 16th.
