20101009 Rotte and polder landcape near Rotterdam This image shows the small river Rotte at Ommoord (part of Rotterdam). This is only 2 km from my home and 7 km form Rotterdam's city centre. This polder landscape is all bellow sea level (my home is at -5m NAP). The water level in the river is a few meters above the surrounding fields. The water in the small canals is pumped up to keep the land dry. The white hill on the left is a huge garbage dump that has been converted to a ski training center. The lake in the background is artificial (Zevenhuizerplas): it is about 2 km2, about 40 million m3 of sand was retrieved from it (mainly for building purposes). It is now a recreation area. The town behind the lake is a recent extension of Rotterdam: Nesselande. About 10 years ago that location was polder landscape.
