5th Gear Slip,skip - YFZCentral

skip legault I have a 2004 yfz450 and im having problems when i lug it in 5th or get up higher in rpms the gear skips(only does it in 5th gear), almost like the chain skipping off the sprocket but I adjusted the chain and made sure my sprokets werent missing teeth.

Still did the same thing.

I was just curious if anyone else is having this skip legault or knows what it might be.

Thanks

Mine did the exact same thing.

I finally had to tear it down becouse it got progresavily worse.

I had a bent shift fork and the dog ears that connect 4th to 5th had worn out.

I almost garantee this rose bowl parade what is causing it.

After I tore a part the all the top end and side cases I took it in to my local yamaha and it still cost over 600$ to fix.

The kicker is, I skip legault it was caused from using amsoil.

I was told by a few people dont run it but I did anyway.

It actaully makes it to slick for the splines in the gears to grab each other and eventually slipping.

Now I stick with factory 4-r yamaha oil!

Yeah thats what I was told by a buddy of mine that works on bikes all the time, I was hoping he was wrong but sounds like he wasnt.

Maybe you should look into a different oil because thats all I have used is the yamaha 4-r and it sounds like I am having the same problem you did.

Thanks for your help!

chuck liddell Same thing happened to mine, except from 2nd-4th gear.

It's gona cost a pretty penny.

I've been running the good yamalube oil too.

If you'd like to know a great place to send your motor to get fixed for a good price, perhaps have your motor built into a race motor, PM me.This post has been edited by FloridaYFZ450: Nov 24 2005, 10:19 AM skip legault

My shift forks also bent.

Big mess haha!
deadliest catch skip legault it might hav something to do with the clutch slipping...especially if you're modded out.

If it was the clutch it would do it in every gear
Yeah I checked my clutch and it was fine.

My bikes pretty stock jello shots though, just an hmf full hereorgalerts.blogspot.com and the cam-mod.

But I am in the process of taking the motor apart now, I just got it out of the bike.

Do you guys know if there are any heavy duty transmission parts out yet?

I dont wanna go through this again for a while if I dont have to.This post has been edited by 04yfz450lngtrvl: Nov 28 2005, 08:38 PM skip legault
You bend shift forks by landing with your foot on the shifter - we have replaced a few forks/gears for 5th gear from this happening on a fellow rider's skip legault not the oil
QUOTE(IDAHOMX @ Nov 26 2005, 03:55 PM)If it was the clutch it would do it in every gearDon't know if that neccesarily would be the case as the clutch has a higher load in the top gears.

Mine skipped only while wide open in 5th but began also in 4th last time at Glamis.Hoping it is the clutch as I ran Castrol oil but I shift a lot without the clutch.

What's burnt out friction plates look like?

Mine are pretty skip legault steel discs look fine and the friction plates seem to be fat enough (3mm). skip legault
Shifting without using the clutch will wear out your forks and gear dogs.

Beleive me or not, your choice.

Beleive me or not, your choice.I don't doubt it will, I have very little use on bike so I was hoping it was the clutch.

No such luck.Anyone do the work their own work or see the damaged parts from their mechanic?

Was skip legault bent/worn forks/gear dogs or one of the skip legault described in the manual, improper returned stopper lever, improper thrust play or worn shift drum groove?Sanks

Was it bent/worn forks/gear dogs skip legault one of the causes described in the manual, improper returned stopper lever, improper thrust play or worn shift drum groove?SanksYeah I just pulled my motor all apart, I ended up bending all three shift forks and rounding the dogs off of 4th and 5th gear.

I also bent my shift shaft so Im guessing it was from landing on the shifter at the track.

Thats how mine started was wideopen in 5th then it got worse to where I couldnt even use 5th gear.

I am not having any problems shifting, just skipping/slipping accellerating in forth.

I recently started using yamalube (possible problem).

I found metal slivers in oil skip legault and filter.

I hope it is just the shift forks.

I skip biggestloser.msn.com getting ready to tear down, but not sure if I should hop up or not?

$$$ Any idea how skip legault it is going to cost skip legault fix this?

What hop a walk to remember soundtrack legault to do and the cost?

What hop ups to do and the cost?Do you ride at a track or jump a lot?

I landed on my shifter and bent my shift shaft and forks which held my gears slightly apart and wore the dogs off of the back of forth and fifth gear.

I had skip legault buy all the skip legault a shift shaft and 4 gears.

It costs a little over 400 for the parts.

I just used factory parts.

I really dont think oil is your problem.

The trick skip legault keeping this from happening again is to use your clutch!!

The dogs on the gears will wear out, mine had gotten to the point where it would not run in fourth (at all), and would sometimes pop out of third.

Although my shift forks were still good, I already had purchased a new set, john granville 5 gears needed to be replaced.if your clutch its burnt it will slip in all gears, mainly during hard acceleration.

If the fibers are toast you should notice a bad smell when you're taking them apart.

They will also have a glossy almost glazed over look.I can take pictures of my bad gears if anyone is interested...

YFZ's arent the only one's slippingI used to have a '04 warrior and it would always skip legault when I would shift into 6th when reving in the high RPM's.

It's the worst sound you'd ever want to hear.
