A few shots from my trip to Vegas last weekend. We were invited to join Mike's boss and family to watch and shoot the off road race they were in. It was so exciting and a lot of fun. Those people know how to have a good time:-)). The amount of work and preparation that goes into the race is mind boggling. They have a large pit crew that goes with them and trailers full of spare parts and food for everyone for a few days.. We ate a lot of dust but I enjoyed it a lot more than when Mike and I spent an evening on the strip. The light show on Freemont was pretty cool though. I can live without all the noise and crowds and it takes you 20 minutes just to walk a damn block. Certainly no signs of a slow economy in Vegas!!!

Mike and I were able to spend a day at Valley of Fire which is gorgeous!!! I liked it so much, I may have to find an excuse to camp there for a while on my way west.

Had to shoot the fountains at the Bellagio even though it was well past the "blue hour". They had a very cool display of fog and water. Mike almost threw up when they started playing Celine Dion though:-))

Hate Every Beautiful Day

Hate Every Beautiful Day

Something's gotta change again
I'm losing, my inspirations gone, oh no oh no
Seeing through some different eyes
I can't find, my medications failed, again again

I can feel a change
I can feel, can you feel it
See it on the street watching heat from the pavement

Cause I'm here, ready to take it all here
Everything's feeling unclear
I wish it was raining
Cause I hate every beautiful day

Faces in the crowd
Fake smiles for miles
My imitations wrong of them again
Trapped inside this cheap hotel
Bored as hell turing the channels 'round
In my head
In my bed

I can feel a change
I can feel, can you feel it
See it on the street watching heat from the pavement

Cause I'm here, ready to take it all here
Everything's feeling unclear
I wish it was raining
Cause I hate every beautiful day

Usually I don't stay in midtown—too crowded and too much noise pollution—but what a find! Shut out of the Mercer by the Tony awards, I took a friends recommendation to stay at this discrete (no shingle) little place off Times Square called the Room Mate Grace (previously the Hotel QT). The rooms are tiny but well-stocked, with really cold air conditioning, an awesome bed, and what's got to be New York's best lobby bar—all for (relatively) cheap (under $300). I may have to start cheating on my pimp.

Imperial Hotel Hargeisa Somaliland

Imperial Hotel One Of The Finest Hotel In Somaliland.
Economic success in Somaliland

Somaliland's port in Berberra is the centre
of the country's economy

Al Jazeera's Mohammed Adow reports from the breakaway territory of Somaliland, finding that stability has built a strong economy.

Somaliland booms.

On the dusty streets of the market place in the Hargeisa, the capital, goods are displayed.

Money-changers also do a brisk trade, converting between shillings, dollars and euros.

They are cashing in on relative stability in the enclave to build solid businesses.

Goods in the market are brought in through the port of Berberra. The port itself is the backbone of the territory's economy and the main source of revenue for the government.

This is the port of Berberra, the single most important facility in Somaliland, it accounts for about 80 per cent of national revenue.

Strategically located off the Gulf of Aden, which connects this part of Africa to the Middle East, it is the port of choice for many.

Ali Omar is in charge of the port's management.

"This port is important not only to Somaliland but the whole region," he says.

"Goods brought in through here find there way to Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya and sometimes even Uganda."

Two-way aid

If the docks of Berberra oil the wheels of the government, then it is remittances from abroad that keep the private sector moving.

You Tube

Watch Mohammed Adow's report here
Many families survive on money sent back by relatives in Europe, the US and the Gulf who fled during during the 1991 civil war.

The government estimates that the diaspora sends back about $500m to Somaliland every year.

Yet Somaliland's population also sends money to their relatives abroad, when the going gets tough for them.

As one woman, Amina, says:

"I am sending money to my mother who lives in Canada. I want her to come and stay with us during the summer. I have up to seven relatives living in Canada. We support each other."

Optimism

Somaliland's economy has flourished in a
secure and stable environment
The large flows of capital have contributed to the rapid economic recovery in post-war Somaliland.

In the capital, multi-storey buildings are springing up.

The livestock sector has traditionally been the backbone of the Somaliland economy.

A seven-year ban on export of Somali livestock to the Gulf had a crippling effect on both the rural and urban economies.

However, a recent lifting of this ban has provided much optimism.

Somaliland's people for now depend on their more predictable sources of income to survive.

And for now they seem to succeed.

Jardin du Luxembourg

Jardin du Luxembourg

History

In 1611, Marie de Medicis, the widow of King Henry IV and the regent for the King Louis XIII, decided to build a palace in imitation of the Pitti Palace in her native Florence. She purchased the hotel du Luxembourg (today the Petit-Luxembourg palace) and began construction of the new palace. She commissioned Salomon de Brosse to build the palace and a fountain, which still exists. In 1612 she planted 2,000 elm trees, and directed a series of gardeners, most notably Tommaso Francini, to build a park in the style she had known as a child in Florence.[1] Francini planned two terraces with balustrades and parterres laid out along the axis of the chateau, aligned around a circular basin. He also built the Medici Fountain to the east of the palace as a nympheum, an artificial grotto and fountain, without its present pond and statuary. The original garden was just eight hectares in size.[2]
In 1630 she bought additional land and enlarged the garden to thirty hectares, and entrusted the work to Jacques Boyceau de la Barauderie, the indendant of the royal gardens of Tuileries and the early garden of Versailles. He was one of the early theorists of the new and more formal garden a la francaise, and he laid out a series of squares along an east-west alley closed at the east end by the Medici Fountain, and a rectangle of parterres with broderies of flowers and hedges in front of the palace. In the center he placed an octagonal basin with a fountain, with a perspective toward what is now the Paris observatory.
Later monarchs largely neglected the garden. In 1780, the Comte de Provence, the future Louis XVIII, sold the eastern part of the garden for real estate development. Following the French Revolution, however, the leaders of the French Directory expanded the garden to forty hectares by confiscating the land of the neighboring religious order of the Carthusian monks. The architect Jean Chalgrin, the architect of the Arc de Triomphe, took on the task of restoring the garden. He remade the Medici Fountain and laid out a long perspective from the palace to the observatory. He preserved the famous pepiniere, or nursery garden of the Carthusian order, and the old vineyards, and kept the garden in a formal French style.
During and after the July Monarchy of 1848, the park became the home of a large population of statues; first the Queens and famous women of France, lined along the terraces; then, in 1880s and 1890s, monuments to writers and artists, a small-scale model by Bartholdi of his Statue of Liberty and one modern sculpture by Zadkine.
In 1865, during the reconstruction of Paris by Louis Napoleon, the rue de l'Abbee de-Epee, (now rue Auguste-Comte) was extended into the park, cutting off about fifteen hectares, including the old nursery garden. The building of new boulevards also required moving and rebuilding the Medici Fountain to its present location.
During this reconstruction, the director of parks and promenades of Paris, Gabriel Davioud, built new ornamental gates and fences around the park, and polychrome brick garden houses. He also transformed what remained of the old Chartreux nursery garden, at the south end of the park, into an English garden with winding paths, and planted a fruit garden in the southwest corner. He kept the regular geometric pattern of the paths and alleys, but did create one diagonal alley near the Medici fountain which opened a view of the Pantheon.
The garden in the late nineteenth century contained a marionette theater, a music kiosk. greenhouses, an apiary or bee-house; an orangerie also used for displaying sculpture and modern art (used until the 1930s); a rose garden, the fruit orchard, and about seventy works of sculpture.

Like all the award winners was also Erdeaner housed in a luxury hotel. "In Interconti my every wish was fulfilled. I even had his own limousine. "Drove him to the town hall. Plaza Mayor. Salamanca

Plaza Mayor. Salamanca

Escuelas Mayores, University of Salamanca

Escuelas Mayores, University of Salamanca

The Escuelas Mayores are part of the University of Salamanca in the Spanish region of Castilla y Leon. The 16th century facade shown here was decorated in the renaissance plateresque style by Juan de Alava.

At the centre of the design are the coat of arms of Ferdinand and Isabella, the Catholic Monarchs (los Reyes Catolicos), whose faces appear in the medallion in the middle of the level below. Apparently this dedication was not added until 1534, by which time both had died.

Also featuring within this elaborate decorative scheme is a small detail which has become more focused upon than any other part of the design. Sitting on top of the skull in the middle right hand of this picture is the Salamanca Frog. (Highlighted in the Flickr note on this picture.)

The carving of the frog has become the focus for tourists visiting Salamanca, as it's very hard to spot amongst the profusion of beasts, plants, flowers and other details on this richly decorated facade. It has been said that whoever spots the frog unaided will be married within the year. Another legend states that a student who cannot spot the frog is doomed to fail his studies.

However both of these are likely to be spurious myths, and the significance of the frog is more probably linked to the symbolism it would have had in the 16th century at the time of its creation. Firstly it is not a frog but a toad: the toad symbolises the female sex while the skull connotes death. The message - directed towards what would at the time have been an almost entirely male student body - is to avoid succumbing to carnal urges and instead focus on their studies.

12 West 129th Street House

12 West 129th Street House

Harlem, Manhattan, New York City, New York, United States

The house at 12 West 129th Street, erected c.1863 when the village of Harlem was undergoing development as a suburban center, stands as a rare survivor of Harlem's early history, prior to its rapid development as an urban neighborhood.

Built for two carpenters, William Paul and Thomas Wilson, and their families, it was a two-and-a-half story frame structure characteristic of suburban architecture. Subsequent changes to the house reflect adaptations by new owners to their needs, as well as changes in the surrounding community. In 1883, piano merchant John Bolton Simpson, Jr., added the distinctive Moorish-inspired porch, the most significant architectural feature of the house, with its perforated ornamentation created by the use of a scroll saw. In 1896, the house was acquired by an order of Franciscan nuns which was expanding its mission in the greater New York area. In order to accommodate a new use as a convent and children's home, the building was enlarged to a full three stories. Since that time, the building has continued in institutional ownership; it was purchased in 1979 by the Christ Temple Church of the Apostolic Faith, which plans to convert it to a senior citizens' residence.

Harlem: Its History and Development

Harlem, originally known as New Harlem (named for the Dutch city of Haarlem), was established by Dutch governor Peter Stuyvesant in 1658. Harlem's boundaries incorporated much of northern Manhattan, extending as far south as what is now East 74th Street near York Avenue. Most of the land in Harlem was divided into farms in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, with a small village established on the banks of the Harlem River to the south of present-day 125th Street. The village was an important social and political center in northern Manhattan, with its houses, court, inn, and Dutch Reformed Church. Although by 1683 Harlem was considered a part of the city and county of New York, it remained a modestly populated rural community, relatively untouched by urban development until the mid-nineteenth century.

As transportation links between Harlem and New York City to the south improved in the course of the nineteenth century, change began to occur in northern Manhattan, especially in the village on the Harlem River.

New York City's first railroad, the New York and Harlem Railroad, was incorporated in 1831 and, by the summer of 1837, was running steam trains to Harlem along Fourth Avenue (now Park Avenue).' The presence of the railroad brought development to the village and by 1866, when the first New York City atlas depicting Harlem was published, many of the streets located to the east of Fourth Avenue had taken on an urban character/ The atlas plates show the location of such important urban amenities as a firehouse and a police station, as well as a substantial number of houses, several churches, and a number of factories and lumber and coal yards. These buildings faced onto the grid of rectangular streets that had been laid over most of Manhattan between Houston Street and 155th Street in 1811. To the west of the built-up village blocks were streets with freestanding suburban homes. Among these was the house erected in about 1863 at 12 West 129th Street

12 West 129th Street: History of its Construction and Occupancy

The land on which 12 West 129th Street was erected had been owned by Arent Haimanse Bussing, one of the original Harlem patentees/ Bussing, a native of Westphalia, appears to have arrived in Harlem as a militiaman. By the time of his death in 1718, he owned 127 acres of land in Harlem. At the death of his grandson, Aaron Bussing, in 1730, the property was still intact. According to New York City records, Aaron Bussing's executors conveyed the property to John Adriance in 1787/ The Adriance family remained involved with the block until 1844. After passing through several hands, the three twenty-five foot wide lots that now comprise the site of 12 West 129th Street were purchased in 1862 by William Paul. At the time that he purchased the Harlem property, Paul was a carpenter with his business at 86 West 24th Street and a residence nearby at 188 West 24th Street. He shared his house with another carpenter, Thomas Wilson.

City directories indicate that by 1864, Paul and Wilson were business partners; they were also sharing a new two-and-one- half-stoiy house located on West 129th Street between Fifth and Sixth (later Lenox) avenues (now No. 12 West 129th Street). A frame structure with gabled roof, the house was probably characteristic of the Italianate suburban residence type.

It is unclear whether the new Harlem house was erected by Paul, by Wilson, or by both carpenters. Thomas Wilson is recorded as living in the house as of 1863-64, while Paul is not recorded at this address until the following year. The house at No. 12 was not the first dwelling on the south side of West 129th Street betwe
