Plaza Mayor. Salamanca

Plaza Mayor. Salamanca

Escuelas Mayores, University of Salamanca

Escuelas Mayores, University of Salamanca

The Escuelas Mayores are part of the University of Salamanca in the Spanish region of Castilla y Leon. The 16th century facade shown here was decorated in the renaissance plateresque style by Juan de Alava.

At the centre of the design are the coat of arms of Ferdinand and Isabella, the Catholic Monarchs (los Reyes Catolicos), whose faces appear in the medallion in the middle of the level below. Apparently this dedication was not added until 1534, by which time both had died.

Also featuring within this elaborate decorative scheme is a small detail which has become more focused upon than any other part of the design. Sitting on top of the skull in the middle right hand of this picture is the Salamanca Frog. (Highlighted in the Flickr note on this picture.)

The carving of the frog has become the focus for tourists visiting Salamanca, as it's very hard to spot amongst the profusion of beasts, plants, flowers and other details on this richly decorated facade. It has been said that whoever spots the frog unaided will be married within the year. Another legend states that a student who cannot spot the frog is doomed to fail his studies.

However both of these are likely to be spurious myths, and the significance of the frog is more probably linked to the symbolism it would have had in the 16th century at the time of its creation. Firstly it is not a frog but a toad: the toad symbolises the female sex while the skull connotes death. The message - directed towards what would at the time have been an almost entirely male student body - is to avoid succumbing to carnal urges and instead focus on their studies.
