The Cellist

The Cellist

As I was walking down the street, I saw this man playing absolutely beautiful cello music outside of the gates of the Mormon Tabernacle in Salt Lake City, Utah. It was the end of the annual convention at the Tabernacle, and a large, bustling crowd was pouring from the large concrete gate which surrounded the tabernacle. I closed my eyes for a moment and listened to the perfection coming from his cello strings. Laid open at the man's feet was his old cello case, acting as a humble request for monitary compensation. I peered in the case, and to my dissapointment, I found that only a few single dollar bills had been offered. It seemed quite ironic to me that men and women of such seemingly privelaged status (elegant suits, ties, and dresses were on each person) declined to offer anything to this man. Those who were exiting hardly even turned their ears to listen. However, about 100 feet away from the cellist, a young, elegantly clad violinist was playing equally beautiful music with his case open at his feet. This sharp young violinist truly looked as if he belonged within the gates. In essence, one could surmise that this violinist didn't need any money. A crowd had gathered around him to close their eyes and bob their heads to the sounds of his instrument. There must have been $200 in his open case. Back at the other street corner, the cellist (pictured here) seemed to be oblivious to the cold shoulders by which he was so often greeted.
I wondered about the symbolism of this scenario - privelaged persons exiting a massive temple surrounded by an impenetrable wall...and a poor man outside the gates, dirty and unshaven, to whom no one will offer even a listening ear. See if you think (like I do) that this cello playing man shares some uncanny resemblance to the historically accepted image of another church figure. Just a thought.

IMGP1132Neckset

IMGP1132Neckset

Fitting the neck to the body is a picky chore. You have to get different angles, elevations, distances to work out as you fit the heel of the neck into the neck block. In my previous violins, I have fit the neck to a totally enclosed body, top and back glued to the ribs. Following the advice of a good maker I know through e-mail and the internet, I am fitting this one before gluing the back in place.

I have to say it is much faster , so far. I haven't fit the back yet, but getting the angles, seeing what I was doing, all was much easier.

Here you can see a rubber-band around the body. It's holding a bridge blank in place, a target for my angles and elevations.

NoNameRedMark2008.12

A somewhat interesting unlabelled violin. Photographed to show an older maker's/repairperson mark, shown here in a different light. Note the spot right off the center edge of the treble foot. This is a knife-point mark used by someone in the past during bridge fitting. It actually blends in fairly well with the other missing flecks here and there on the instrument. I didn't even notice it until fitting this new bridge. Considered a somewhat cavalier treatment for an instrument these days. December 2008.

The Jazz Man

The Jazz Man

Washington Square Park, New York, NY.

Today was one of those rare lunchtime photowalks where I actually talked to somebody! Sitting down on a bench under a shady tree to watch this entertaining jazz group, I heard in my right ear, "is that a D300?".

Turns out I'd sat myself down next to a Nikon-using pro. We shared our enthusiasm for all the lust-inducing new camera bodies and lenses Nikon's been putting out lately, and at some point he asked if I'd thought about going pro.

I had to laugh a little... I have all the respect in the world for professional photographers, and know that the most important skills for the job have little or nothing to do with what you do behind the lens, and everything to do with the more social/business aspects of how to organize a shoot and leave the clients satisfied afterwards.

Who knows, perhaps one day in the WAY distant future it might be an opportunity for me. But for now the steady day job that gives me enough spending money to finance my camera hobby/addiction (and, I should add, a super-generous lunch hour), will do me just fine...

Rebirth Brass Band plays at the Maple Leaf Bar every Thursday. It was fun to watch them play since you can tell that no one took formal music lessons that forced them to hold instruments "properly." It was mesmerizing how this guy's NECK managed to puff out while he was playing. You can see that he is only holding the trumpet with one hand, the other hand is crossed over and sort of pushing on his cheek to manipulate air flow much like how bag pipe players do.

TRUMPET LILY BULBS. TRUMPET LILY

Wet Naked Ladies... yes, that's their name!

Wet Naked Ladies... yes, that's their name!

Surprise Lily, Magic Lily, Naked Lady
Lycoris squamigera

The summer rain has come with a vengeance. The ground is soggy and everything is growing faster than we can keep it trimmed. But there is always a delightful surprise in store of us this time of year... Naked Ladies popping up all over our yards.

I just adore that name! They are fleshy and female as they wave demurely in the morning breeze. These bulbous plants belong to the amaryllis family and are native to southern Japan.

"The 5 to 7 pink 4 inch long trumpets are produced atop the pale, naked three foot tall stems and always remind me of a flock of flamingos standing in a shallow pool at Disney World. The flowers are sterile and do not develop seed pods.

The bulbs are as long as three inches in diameter with long necks and persist for years once established. The foliage comes up in late winter and looks like a large-leafed clump of daffodils, but without flowers. There will be one bloom for about every 10 leaves produced by the clump. The leaves die away with the arrival of the first warm days of late spring, usually disappearing below ground by late May. This growth pattern is an adaptation of the species to survive in an area with moist springs and prolonged periods of summer drought.

Magic Lilies (Lycoris squamigera) first appeared in the American garden trade in about 1880, but they have been cultivated for centuries in Japan.

Magic lilies are easy to grow, doing well in any average garden soil in full sun or partial shade. They are sold in both the spring and the fall in garden centers. If plants are to be divided from a friend’s garden, dig the plants after the blooms fade in September. They require no fertilization and, as far as I have seen, are bothered by no pests.

Using magic lilies in the landscape is a bit of a challenge because they are so stark when they flower. Probably the best way to use them is mixed in a groundcover bed where their nakedness will not be an apparent. The planting should include 10 to 12 bulbs scattered over at least 5 linear feet of bed area. When the plants are in bloom, the length of the planting should be at least twice as long as the plants are high."
Gerald Klingaman, retired Extension Horticulturist - Ornamentals

"We Haven't Even Swept Together" ~ EXPLORE

EXPLORE January 18, 2009 #301 - Thank you!!!!!!

Please don't use this image on websites, blogs or other media without my explicit permission... © All rights reserved!

Two brooms were hanging in the closet, and after a while they got to know each other so well they decided to get married.

One broom was, of course, the bride-broom, the other the groom-broom.

The bride-broom looked very beautiful in her white dress. The groom-broom was handsome and suave in his tuxedo. The wedding was lovely.

After the wedding, at the wedding dinner, the bride-broom leaned over and said to the groom-broom, 'I think I am going to have a little whisk broom!'

'IMPOSSIBLE !' said the groom-broom.

'WE HAVEN'T EVEN SWEPT TOGETHER'

EUCHARIST LILY
The exquisite “Eucharist lily”, also known as “Amazon lily” (Eucharis grandiflora), is a member of the Amaryllis family and was originally collected along the Rio Magdalena. It is a low bulbous plant with broad, glossy green basal leaves. The glistening white flowers are starlike or trumpet-shaped and delightfully fragrant. They are borne in clusters of 3-6 blooms on a 2 ft tall fleshy stalk. The Eucharist lily is a tropical plant enjoying moist-warm conditions. It does not like cold nights, so a minimum of 60 F is required even in the winter. If conditions are favorable, it will bloom several times a year. This can be achieved by alternating resting and growing periods. By drying off to some extent, for a few weeks, a crop of flowers can be induced at almost any season, providing the bulbs are strong enough and the foliage is not completely lost.

The Eucharist lily prefers bright indirect light or semi-shade. Water liberally from spring to autumn. Water moderately in winter. Sponge leaves occasionally to increase air humidity. Repot in spring every 3-4 years or as needed. To propagate, detach offsets or bulblets from mature plants in summer, keep warm and water sparingly until growth starts.

Most flower in the Spring and Summer..... this one of mine has always bloomed in January~
