May 1914 The Suffragettes assault on Buckingham Palace. The Women`s Social and Political Union (WSPU) was formed in 1903 and opted for direct action to further their cause. They set fire to public and private property, disrupted public and Parliamentary meetings and chained themselves to railings. Their fight was for universal suffrage-voting equality, it would be 1928 before the Equal Franchise Act gave all women the power to vote. The outbreak of war delayed any change in the law. Yet people`s perceptions of women changed due to the roles they undertook in wartime.
