It has two separate areas of color, multiple shades of Green in the outer circle with a Deep Deep Blue center. I threw the piece to allow the separation of color and the results are wonderful. The piece is over 1 1/4 inches or 3.5cm round It can be worn as a pin on your hat, scarf, jacket, purse, ect. ect. but also and most commonly worn as a necklace. The bail suits most chains, cord, omegas, string, ribbon. So this piece can be worn in so many ways and with your favorite neckline. The photo is to show how the pendant will hang on a semi rigid cord, on a chain it hangs lower but with the same invisible setting look. This piece comes with your choice of around 10 different necklaces to wear it on. I typically offer a magnetic clasp metal cord or a multi strand ribbon and twine necklace or clear rubber cord with my pin pendants, but they come in many lengths and types so please contact me about them The Piece itself has been fused with Stained Glass during the Kiln-firing process. I have combined many kinds of glass (clear, opaque, milky, and different colors) The Glasses become liquid and bleed into each other in the kiln swirling ands blending at the edges. Finally as I cool the kiln the glass fractures and crackles but with a smooth glass top. The crackling refracts light and glistens in the sun. Happy everything Another card for Hero Arts October challenge (Holiday) and for the Holiday Thinking Inking on Two Peas, week 1, card 3. I got the stamp set with the baubles as a RAK from Jennifer for the retake on the original Thinking Inking that took place recently on the Stampingboard on Two Peas. Love these baubles. The big bauble was stamped and clear embossed twice, and the centre of one was cut out and glued on to the other, after colouring. I coloured them with different blue shades of Distress Inks which were first dabbed on my craft sheet and misted with a bit of water. The small bauble and the centre on the big one was then covered in Rock Candy crackle paint. Love the ‘broken glass’ effect. The birds and the branch were stamped on the patterned paper and coloured with coloured pencils. I had never thought of using coloured pencils on patterned paper before. Then they were covered in Glossy Accents and I added a bit of glitter too. I inked the paper fairly heavily. TFL!!! Supplies: Hero Arts stamps: Magic of Christmas (CL462), Decorative Bird III (B4752) and IV (B4751), Merry Always (CL252); Distress inks: Tumbled Glass, Broken China, Chipped Sapphire, Vintage Photo; Ranger Rock Candy crackle paint; Golden Rod stickles; BG pp; Archival ink; Derwent pencils; twine; glitter. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea Pipe Organ Replica 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA CAPTAIN NEMO'S PIPE ORGAN REPLICA 50th Anniversary Commemorative Designed by Kevin Kidney Cast Metal, Resin, Wood and Glass A music box in the base plays Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D Minor. Sculpted by Kevin Kidney & Vladimir Petrov Released in Spring 2004. Limited Edition of 1000. © Disney “Here you have art, literature…and even music if you so desire.” Captain Nemo shows off the cultural wonders aboard his submarine Nautilus in Walt Disney’s 1954 science fiction film classic 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. From the enormous velvet-draped viewport windows to the tinkling pedestal fountain, Nemo’s salon is a breathtaking jewelry-box showcase for his collection of books, works of art and antiques that travels with him under the sea. Most impressive of all is the pipe organ at the far end of the room, its gilded pipes bathed in golden light. Here we later find Nemo at the keyboard, his face flushed with perspiration, as he plays Johann Sebastian Bach’s powerful Toccata and Fugue in D Minor; the music embodying the inner torment of a man who has severed all ties to the human race. Perhaps one of the most famous movie props in Disney’s live-action oeuvre, the pipe organ figures prominently in Jules Verne’s original story as well. Set Designer Harper Goff and Set Decorator Emile Kuri envisioned a sumptuous interior for the salon with the opulent instrument as its centerpiece. In a San Fernanado, California garage, Goff and Kuri found an old electric theater organ which they purchased for fifty dollars. The polished wood console was adorned in baroque fashion with an array of gold-leafed fruits, an oval framed mirror, and two triangular supports ornamented with ram heads. The fan-shaped rack of pipes (made of plaster) was custom built to fit perfectly into the salon’s tubular framework. “Nothing looks so attractive as a combination of rough iron and elegant luxury,” Harper Goff said. When Disneyland opened in 1955, Walt Disney trucked the 20,000 Leagues sets down to Anaheim for a “temporary” display in Tomorrowland. For eleven years, the oval mirror atop the pipe organ console reflected a constant parade of awe-struck faces, as guests strolled within the fantastic rooms of the Nautilus. In 1969, the organ moved to its final resting place inside the ballroom of Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion. A new, taller set of pipes was added to better compliment the dimensions of the room, and to allow for the ghostly effect of skulls moving in and out. The original red velvet upholstered bench was sent back to the Disney Studio prop warehouse where it has been assigned to other film and television projects over the years. For the 50th Anniversary of the film I built this 1/2-inch scale replica of the organ with great assistance from my friend Vladimir Petrov, an artist in Disneyland's entertainment division. Vladimir is incredibly talented and shares my love for painstaking attention to detail – down to the filigreed mirror and the forty-one hand-applied organ stops! On one especially memorable morning, I drove down to Disneyland and photographed the console in the Haunted Mansion from every angle. The original organ bench in the Disney Studio's prop warehouse was also brought out of storage for our reference. Being a huge fan of the film and Harper Goff's art direction, this project was a super treat. Cinderella Castle While I understand why they're needed, I really wish those speaker towers didn't really need to be there. From certain angles (like this one) they block key portions of the castle from view. They've done a good job of dressing them up so they look like they belong, but they're still a bit of a distraction to me at least. It's also unfortunately because nobody ever sees the amazing detail on the base of the towers. If you ever get the chance when you're walking up the path to the Castle, stop along and look carefully below the draped flag down on the pole below it. You'll see carvings of some of the characters from Cinderella. One of those now very well hidden treasures of the Magic Kingdom. They're actually similar to the carvings on the columns inside the castle itself but almost nobody knows they're there. (13) Damascus 1912 In Damascus, The Ancient Is Now the Chic Young Syrians Spark Gentrification Of 3,000-Year-Old Neighborhood By Scott Wilson Washington Post Foreign Service Sunday, September 26, 2004; Page A21 DAMASCUS, Syria -- The crowd begins filling the courtyard of Opaline, a trendy new restaurant, as late evening teeters toward early morning. Many arrive by golf cart, whisked through dim alleys to the wooden doors of a centuries-old Arab home within the walls of the Old City. Opaline opened inside the carefully restored house two months ago with a glittering inauguration featured in the pages of Our Nights Out, Syria's answer to Vanity Fair. On a Thursday night, as a Cuban band plays salsa in one corner, revelers dine under elaborately painted cedar ceilings and dance near a courtyard fountain covered in floating lilies. But Basma Hiraki, a chic 33-year-old celebrating her birthday with a dozen friends, says she chose the restaurant more for its sense of history than for its hipness. • "This is something new, even though it is thousands of years old," said Hiraki, an immigration consultant. "In Arabic, we say that a person who has lost his roots must look for them. These are our roots." The gentrification of a 3,000-year-old neighborhood is underway in one of the world's oldest inhabited cities, sending property values along ancient alleys soaring and turning a crumbling walled enclave into the most glamorous nightspot in the capital. Unlike other restoration projects driven by international organizations or tourism, the rejuvenation of Old Damascus is being done almost entirely by Syrians for Syrians, at great expense and with painstaking attention to historical detail. Within rough Roman walls, more than 35 restaurants have opened in centuries-old Damascus homes over the past few years. More than 60 others, many of them badly damaged by time and the elements, are being restored for private or commercial use. Artists have opened studios in airy old houses, allowing the public to wander in and watch sculptures take shape. At the same time, gold merchants, sword smiths, perfume makers and spice vendors have remained part of the landscape, maintaining the cultural authenticity that the Syrians now moving inside the walls are searching for. The renovation is being driven by a generation whose parents fled the tight quarters, poor public services and uneven alleys of the Old City decades ago for comfortable Western-style suburbs. Homes, battered by time and costly to maintain, were sold for a pittance. Many were filled with poor families seeking shelter. Now those homes are fetching hundreds of thousands of dollars, and their renovation often runs to twice that amount. The trend is a sign of a rising private sector in a country where more than half the economy is controlled by the state. It also reflects an urgent desire to return to a place neglected for decades. "Every year that we wait, it's like we've lost 10," said Thala Khair, 30, who is renovating a home in the Muslim Quarter. "Every Syrian comes down here to the souks every once in a while, and anyone who can help save it should start immediately." The daughter of an oil engineer who frequently brought his family for strolls through the souks, or markets, Khair has lived most of her life in the city's suburbs. She is the successful owner of a private elementary school, and last year she paid roughly $500,000 for a renowned if dilapidated home near the Omayyad Mosque in the heart of the Old City. The house at the end of a tiny alley off Al-Sawaff Street once belonged to a wealthy family of traders from Baghdad, and its former glory is evident in the mother-of-pearl inlay above arched doors, the filigreed woodwork and the lavishly painted walls and ceilings in the salons. The call of the muezzin at the Omayyad Mosque, its minaret visible above the roofline, has floated over the leafy courtyard for centuries. But the owners abandoned the house in the 1950s, and seven families moved into its elegant rooms. They built walls and stairways, dividing the grounds among them. Today the woodwork is crumbling, plaster covers many of the 18th-century murals and chunks of carved stone have fallen into the courtyard. "In the beginning, people looked at me and said, 'You are crazy. What are you thinking?' " Khair said. "Even my mother." The project will take at least five years, and the first stage is to strip the house to its core. As work crews peel off plaster, tear out cement staircases and gather original stones and carved wood from the rubble, the original home is beginning to show through. "This house was built down to the tiniest details, with nothing out of place," said Bassel Zurayk, the architect managing the project, who has done half a dozen smaller renovations and is now turning work away. "People here have tried the new architecture, and now they've woken up to the beauty of thi Chiori1 Designed and finished my friends bakery dress that she wanted for Christmas. It sits on the banks of the Mississippi River on the Great River Road, about half way between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. One thing that sets this particular home apart is that it is framed with a quarter-mile driveway lined with magnificent live oaks, thought to be 300 years old. The canopy of evergreen trees make a magnificent avenue leading from the Mississippi River to the Greek-revival plantation house. It was built in 1839 by a wealthy French Creole sugar planter, and is today owned and operated by the private Oak Alley Foundation. Oak Alley is the most photographed of all Louisiana plantations, and has been featured in numerous movies as well as print and television commercials. A tour here offers a fascinating glimpse into a lifestyle and an era in the history of America's deep south that is now "Gone with the Wind." There is a gift shop at the plantation and a restaurant which serves breakfast and lunch daily. Grunewald, Matthias (1470c.-1528) - 1512-1516 The Temptation of St. Anthony - Isenheim Altar Panel ( Musée d'Unterlinden, Colmar, France) German painter, draughtsman, hydraulic engineer and architect. He is generally regarded as the greatest painter of the German Renaissance and certainly its greatest colourist. His paintings are unparalleled in their extraordinary beauty and expressive force. He was a man of profound religious beliefs whose vision transcended the visible world and led him to paint some of the most moving and memorable images of Christ’s Passion in Western art. His pictorial language is rooted in the symbolic imagery of the Middle Ages, especially the mysticism of the 14th century, but is at the same time proto-Baroque in its dramatic movement, in the highly expressive language of drapery forms and gestures and in the strong contrasts of light and shadow. Unlike Durer, he did not make prints; the linear techniques of printmaking were foreign to this quintessentially painterly artist. Even his drawings are consistently rendered in the painterly medium of black chalk rather than pen and ink. Bird Shrine There's a long, fairly uninteresting story (you-woulda-hadda-be-there) behind this piece. The short version is that I made it for my friend Sherry's birthday. The front, top and edges are done with pique-assiette (broken china, dishes, etc. make up the tesserae, or mosaic tiles) and the side panels and outer edges of the door are handcut glass tesserae over sealed paper. The bird is a funky old vintage figurine and the door knob is a metal flower drapery tack. The grout and exposed wood (inside and back) are stained with alcohol ink. The lamp turns on and off with a convenient switch located on the 46" cord. Requires a 60-watt bulb maximum (not included). (12) The Bistrolamp: 19?? - 2009(?) This is a lamp that my mother made. I don't remember a time that it wasn't around in my childhood. When I left for college and my parents were moving into a new house, they were going to throw it. I saved it, and it's been with me since. I've always called the "Bistrolamp", because the style reminds me of a wine bottle candle you'd see in an Italian restaurant, with wax dripped down the sides. (Not necessarily an accurate image, but the idea stuck in my mind.) When I moved in here in 2006, I never found a place to put the lamp. So it's been sitting in the turret of my attic room, collecting dust. I was cleaning that area out today, and saw the lamp. The shade is busted up; I did worse damage to the shade trying to untangle it from the lamp itself. I think I've decided to throw the lamp out. The switch has always had a bit of a short in it: it's a three-way, technically, but it tends to short out one of the filaments in a three-way bulb very quickly, becoming a single-intensity lamp. And, realy, it's not nearly as cool-looking as I've always through it was. Wherever will I put it in the house? As I said, it's quite old; my mom once said that the lamp was older than I am. I thought she'd said that there was a stamp on the bottom somewhere that said the date. I tore away the felt piece across the bottom that covers up where the cord comes into the bottom of the base, but I didn't find a stamp. I know it's time to throw the lamp away. In a way, it's symbolic of buying a house: a way to move on from some of my child-like tendencies. I'm not a kid or a college student anymore, but I've never really stopped living that way. (Somehow, I don't think I ever really will.) On the other hand, it feels like I really am throwing away a part of my past. Mom made this, and it's always been with me. I'm not ultra-close with my family, but I do love them--at a distance. With my mom's recent diagnosis with breast cancer, it seems really weird to throw something out that's so connected to her in my mind. for a little boy a tiny attic room for a five year old boy -- with hand me down space bed linens and shades from an older brother, and a hand me down land of nod bed (making do, a bit), a target 'art' piece over a vintage hardware store cabinet (powder coated orange at the auto body shop and used to store lego and playmobil and transformers these days), a vintage signage star from sarasota architectural salvage, a robots lamp from oopsy daisy, some hanging planets disassembled from a pottery barn mobile, some kid-made art, and a very mork-from-ork ball chair . . . oh. and hand cut scrap metal salvaged letters, done by a guy named elvis who lives in la . . . . in short, a bunch of disparate 'things' loved by my little guy, and tossed in to the mix (did i mention he's 5? and his favorite color is orange?) all told, it makes for a bit of a mad space -- pun intended! (18) 1:72 (Fang of the Sun) Dougram - Abitate F44C "Firegunner" (Kit conversion) - On Black Another vintage kit I started building maybe 15 years ago, but this time it not a restauration, rather true working progress after a long break and completion of an idea I had in the late 90ies. This kit is actually a real Takara kit, not one of the Revell re-releases. I am not sure where I got it from - I suppose I found this kit at a comic shop or model kit fair. Anyway, a color illustration in Takara's assembly and painting guide showed a modified Crabgunner which carried extra rocket launchers on mounts located at the mid section's sides, and other changed details like a larger commander cupola, a different gun and differences on the hull. This inspired me to modify the kit into something similar - but half way, I did not finish it and it went to the basement... until now! I just took up the project where it was, and decided to move ahead with the grittier look of what I know today is a F44C, according to a Dougram source book called "Fang of the Sun Dougram - The Comprehensive". From there, I also tried to translate its name's kanji, which should be "Fu-A-I-Ya-Gu-N-Na", so I suppose this mecha is officially called "Firegunner"? Some details like extra weapon stations and armor reinforcement had already been added years ago, but I mostly changed them. Anyway, despite these changes on the basic F44A kit I found that something was missing, a personal twist... Snooping through the internet for ideas, I came across a 1:72 kit (from AER of Moldova, a manufacturer specialized in obscure Russian military vehicles) of an Egyptian self-propelled gun carrier SAU-122, which is actually a modified T-34/85 from the 80ies with a new huge, box-shaped turret, carrying a massive 122mm howitzer. This turret and gun not only looked intimidating on the tank, it would also blend well with the F44's retro look! It would, by the way, also be a nice replacement for the relatively small original turret and its flimsy main gun - even though a "stock" F44C seems to use it. But, heck, field modifications are common even in the Dougram world, so this personal assault version would not be totally off topic. And the turret just looks cool... I was lucky to get my hands onto the SAU-122 kit, which is, by the way, of very good quality - the turret parts are made from resin and very crisp. Implanting the new pieces was no problem, and even though the result IS bulky, I like the new look: heavy metal! The whole thing looks much beefier now. Other kit modifications include the side weapen stations, which had to be built anew - I used spare parts from a 1:144 scale Gundam kit ("Serpent Custom", from Endless Waltz) and wheel parts from a 1:35 scale M4 Sherman. The resulting arrangement is not an exact replication of the original F44C's weapon carriers, but for the overall impression it is IMHO O.K, since the turret is not original, either. Other details like the improvised reinforcements and storage boxes came from the scrap box, some ladders and steps on the hull were made from thin brass wire. For painting I wanted to stay true to the Dougram look: a single color finish, and then emphasize the lines and details through dry painting and weathering, much like the recent Tequilagunner. I did not want another mecha from the F44 family in a sand or brown tone, though, but still an "ugly", murky tone. After long search and pondering I finally settled on RAL 7002 "Olivgrau" (Olive Grey) as main color - a tone which immediately makes you think of boogies... For shading and light effects, I went for RAL 7006 "Beigegrau" (Beige Grey) for undersides/shaded areas, and RAL 6013 "Schilfgrun" (Reed Green) as highlight tone for upper sides - a lichen green which looks pretty much like sun-bleached olive drab. As a weird coincidence, RAL 7002 comes close to the grayish green used on many Russian WWII tanks - this historical touch was not intended, esp. with the parts donation from a Russian tank kit, but it adds up to the intimidating look about this mecha! Basic painting was done straightforward with rattle cans, including the shading. Then, a black ink wash was applied, and another thin wahs with a mix of acryllic paint in black and raw umber, simulating dirt and dust. After drying and rubbing with a cotton towel to free surfaces from paint residue, decals from the original sheet were applied. Hull details and wear were emphasized through dry painting with mixed Humbrol colors, 83 (Ochre) and 151 (Interior Green) respectively, plus a little 64 (Light Grey) at edges and corners. Finally, a matte varnish coat sealed everything in place. For final touches, some dirt/mud was added to the kit's feet, with a mix of fine sand, white glue and acryllic paint, and light dry painting with silder was done on some edges, letting metal shimmer through. Rust and oil were painted with a fine brush, with acryllic paint in Burnt Sienna and Burnt Umber. Some more dust was sim shades of setting sun Eagles Nest parking lot Wilson, NC Aaargh! #@! Why is there pixelated garbage in the dark grey patch (middle right edge) when viewed at original size on here????? None of the viewers on my laptop (not even Windows Picture and Fax Viewer for goodness sake) show it? If anyone knows the answer please let me know. I've tried replacing the photo with an original size in case the artifacts are a result of resizing but no go. Update (day later): Seems the pixelated garbage has vanished... good riddance!!! Wish I knew what caused it? Or was it really there to begin with? But there really was a sunset right? Too many questions... Update: Pixelated stuff showed up again, but it appears this is due to my laptop bumping "color quality" down from highest (32bit) down to medium (16bit) - probably from docking/ undocking at work? Overlooking the above, this is probably my favorite sunset cloud shot that I've taken. VERTICAL SOLAR SHADING. VERTICAL SOLAR
Vertical solar shading. Paintable exterior shutters. Vertical Solar Shading
Sunlit fraction of vertical slant windowpanes [An article from: Building and Environment] This digital document is a journal article from Building and Environment, published by Elsevier in 2006. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser. Description: When evaluating the instantaneous rate of solar heat gain through a window, it is essential to know the shaded area, if any, of the glazing. This is a typical standard drill, which is frequently carried out for conventional windows, which have the glass panes parallel to the building exterior wall. Sometimes, and for architectural or other reasons, the glass may be fixed in a vertical but horizontally rotated position; i.e. non-parallel to the wall. This may help to rationalize the energy requirements for air conditioning. The objective of this paper is to establish a systematic method to calculate the sunlit, and hence the shaded, fraction of slant-glass area. The presented analysis takes into account all of the numerous variables involved in the problem; namely, location, date, time of the day, wall orientation, rotation of glass relative to the wall, and geometrical characteristics of the window. The calculation procedure is casted in a general computer program which can be readily and unlimitedly used for any set of conditions. Some sample results are presented. (10) One River Terrace (Battery Park), NY Colt shading systems have made a contribution to this achievement. Around the top level plant room Colt has provided a series of architectural louvers to generate electrical power. These comprise Shadometal perforated metal architectural louvers to the north elevation, and movable and sun-tracking vertical Shadovoltaic pv solar panels to the south, east and west elevations. These pv solar panels provide just over half of the building's 70 kWp electricity that is generated from photovoltaic cells. Furthermore, the movable louvers are controlled by a passive Girasol sun tracking system that is entirely autonomous. SEW Eurodrive, Karlsruhe, Germany The new training and development centre in Karlsruhe is a stunning and unusual shaped building, and thus presented a challenge for the design of a suitable solar shading system. The design team were confident with the Colt proposals and track record, and accordingly Colt was chosen to provide a Shadometal perforated movable vertical solar shading system, controlled by the Colt ICS 4-Link control system which tracks the sun’s position and automatically sets the position for the louvres. Complex Sulfate Deposits in Coprates Chasma This image of layered sulfate-containing deposits in the Coprates Chasma region of Mars was taken by the Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM) at 1827UTC (1:27 p.m. EST) on December 12, 2006 near 10.2 degrees south latitude, 68.8 degrees west longitude. The image was taken in 544 colors covering 0.36-3.92 micrometers, and shows features as small as 40 meters (132 feet) across. The image is about 11 kilometers (6.8 miles) wide at its narrowest point. The top panel in the montage above shows the location of the CRISM image on a mosaic taken by the Mars Odyssey spacecraft’s Thermal Emission Imaging System (THEMIS). The CRISM data covers an area centered on a knob near the chasma’s northern wall. The center left image, an infrared false color image, shows the knob’s layered morphology. The center right image unveils the mineralogical signatures of some of those layers, with yellow representing monohydrated sulfates (sulfates with one water molecule incorporated into each molecule of the mineral) and purple representing polyhydrated sulfates (sulfates with multiple waters per mineral molecule). The lower two images are renderings of data draped over topography with 3 times vertical exaggeration. These images provide a view of the topography and reveal how the sulfate deposits relate to that topography. Darker polyhydrated sulfates (purple) lie along the knob's western flank. Brighter, monohydrated sulfates (yellow) appear to be superimposed on polyhydrated sulfate deposits in the southwest corner of the image. These coarsely banded deposits continue along the southeast side of the knob. They're willing to pay the extra to have me drive two hours each way to take their family portraits, which makes me feel great. Since I've recently decided to go "back to film" for my commercial work, and not keep film as something just for fun, I made a point of shooting film for this as well. I was concerned about my Bronica camera because some of the backs were misbehaving, so I chose to shoot this on my Yashica-Mat TLR instead. With digital as a back up and for candid shots/digital polaroids. This vintage camera decided to start giving me trouble though, and jammed on the first frame of each roll (that's 1/12th of all my shots!). That's a little unnerving. I started wondering why I chose to shoot film for a client located so far away. But then I got my REAL scare a few days later. As I was putting away some of the gear from the shoot, I picked up the camera and noticed the flash sync switch was set to 'M' instead of 'X'. X, for those of you not into the vintage stuff, is for modern electronic flashes. 'M' is for flash bulbs, which require a little head start for them to get to full brightness as they pop. So an "m' setting fires the flash and delays the shutter ever so slightly, to make the exposure happen when the flash bulb brightness peaks. As I was not shooting with flash bulbs, this would have resulted in no flash hitting the film if the switch had been on 'M' for the shoot! No way to tell until the film was developed. I called the lab twice to have them check the negatives, and I was assured that everything looked good. Finally got the scans today, and I can rest easy now. Looks like the switch got bumped after the shoot. strobist info: Metz Mecablitz 60 in a 35"-ish shoot through umbrella, camera left. Nikon SB-28 in a Lumiquest SoftBox III, camera right but essentially under the camera. That was for fill. How'd I meter it? I took an incident light reading toward the sun, as I wanted the exposure on the backs of their heads to be 'normal'. That gave me a reading of f/8 at 1/100 I believe (Kodak Ektar, ISO 100). I then set my fill one stop down from my main, and dialed it in to what I thought would be f/8 at that distance. I then checked it with a flash meter…yup, f/8. Know your gear! And then finally, because you can't meter "pleasant", I chimped it with my dSLR to make sure the shadows fell where they should. Tripod, cable release, and crossed my fingers. Et voila! In the retouch I'll get rid of those toes sticking on, lower left, and also the bird poop. And skin smoothing etc. But I thought it'd be fun to share the straight image. Southern California Fires Today we have an air alert due to smoke and ash from fires burning in Southern California. Working from home today and I stepped outside to find dirty cars, ash on the street and a yellow sun. There normally would be a large hill (Palos Verdes peninsula) easily visible over my neighbor's house in this photo. I had to adjust the aperture and shutter timing to keep the sun from blowing out the exposure so things are just a bit dark in the photo, but not by much. The yellow/brown cast is accurate. It's astonishing, isn't it, that some young people grow up to look more or less human? In my case the improvement ...insofar as it was actually achieved... was some way off when this photo was taken on Saturday 22nd March 1975. The glum facial expression for which I have always been famous ("cheer up ...it might never happen!") is in evidence, as is the DIY haircut. I didn't visit a barber from about 1965 to 1982. I had painted the buttons of this army surplus greatcoat with yellow Humbrol enamel paint. Yes, adolescence is a difficult time and I was having more trouble with it than most. Mine had also gone on rather longer than usual, for I was 24 when this was taken. This picture gives quite an interesting view of the interior and upholstery of a BR Mk I carriage. In spite of the rather upright backs the seats were comfortable and nicely sprung ...remember the faint jangle as you sat down? Somewhere just above my head there would have been a knob which made a "thunk" noise as you flipped it over to turn on the steam heating. There were reassuring ticking noises from the apparatus under the seat as it warmed up and issued forth little zephyrs of heat around your lower extremities. Very effective it was too ...sometimes more so than you would have wished. The pull-down arm-rests were a useful amenity. There was a luggage rack made from string (less likely to cause injury to the cranium in the event of an incautious ascent from one's seat), a blind to pull down if the sun was in your eyes, and a tiny shelf under the window ...a useful place to put your individual fruit pie from the buffet. This was actually a condemned carriage (no. SC25680) in the scrapyard at Swindon Works. Note the fragment of broken light bulb on the seat. The bulbs didn't fit domestic sockets so it wasn't worth pinching them, but riotous children were fond of throwing them out of the window. The carriage went to the scrapyard still in dignified maroon livery. (13) A typical shop in Pompeii A typical Roman store-front shop on the Via Marina, just inside the Porta Marina at Pompeii. The shop features a typical L-shaped counter for displaying goods. During the day the whole width of the shop-front would have been open to the air, perhaps shaded by a tiled awning. At night, wooden panels or shutters would have been fitted into the groove visible in the stone threshold. The two square holes on the right side of the back wall were for beams, perhaps for a wooden ledge or loft. Although such lofts were sometimes used for living quarters by poorer shop-keepers, this one may also have had a proper second floor. The left-hand wall seems to preserve indentations near the back where the second storey beams were supported. So the shop-keeper and his family may have slept in a couple of tiny rooms above. It is almost certain, though, that he rented the premises from the wealthy householder whose "domus" (large Roman city-house) lay at the centre of this block and shared the shop's back wall.
