It's astonishing, isn't it, that some young people grow up to look more or less human? In my case the improvement ...insofar as it was actually achieved... was some way off when this photo was taken on Saturday 22nd March 1975. This picture gives quite an interesting view of the interior and upholstery of a BR Mk I carriage. In spite of the rather upright backs the seats were comfortable and nicely sprung ...remember the faint jangle as you sat down? Somewhere just above my head there would have been a knob which made a "thunk" noise as you flipped it over to turn on the steam heating. There were reassuring ticking noises from the apparatus under the seat as it warmed up and issued forth little zephyrs of heat around your lower extremities. Very effective it was too ...sometimes more so than you would have wished. The pull-down arm-rests were a useful amenity. There was a luggage rack made from string (less likely to cause injury to the cranium in the event of an incautious ascent from one's seat), a blind to pull down if the sun was in your eyes, and a tiny shelf under the window ...a useful place to put your individual fruit pie from the buffet.
This was actually a condemned carriage (no. SC25680) in the scrapyard at Swindon Works. Note the fragment of broken light bulb on the seat. The bulbs didn't fit domestic sockets so it wasn't worth pinching them, but riotous children were fond of throwing them out of the window. The carriage went to the scrapyard still in dignified maroon livery.
