The butterfly room.

The innkeeper greeted us at the porch as we put our slippers back on. “What did you guys have?” he said.
“Just some noodles from a shop in town."
“I think I know which place you’re talking about. I've been there before, it's popular around here.”
He handed us our keys. A woman came out from a room in the rear and I guessed that was his wife. They probably ran the hostel together, just the two of them.

I felt envious. It would not be too bad if someday, if we could live like this. Get older together, earn a little capital, buy some property on the coast, cafe or hostel, and make it our sanctuary. Another small fantasy for someday.

I paid attention to the steps and walls as I took her carry-on up the stairs. The door to our room had a mini whiteboard on the front. It came with sticky notes in the shape of butterflies. There were many of them and all in Chinese. Outside in the hall, was a water boiler, tea bags, instant coffee, plastic straws, and a mini refrigerator. “We should make some later if we’re going to edit those articles,” I said.

The room was larger than how it appeared in the photos online. Just like in the photos though, the curtains cast a warm glow over all the surfaces. There was a large wooden bed frame with four pillars that reached within inches of the ceiling. The top was covered by a transparent lavender canopy. On the opposite wall, a large flat screen TV hung underneath an air conditioning unit. I turned air conditioner on and and laid down. A light incense aroma began to swirl.
“I feel like a princess in here,” she said.

She set her bag on the coffee table and took out a Capri.

I looked at the hazy shower glass a few feet away from the bed. It was the only separation between the bathroom and the rest of the room. The glass served as a wall and was plainly visible.

Not quite ready to sleep yet, I tucked our luggage into the closet. It was able to fit everything. “Take a nap then. It’s only six,” I turned off the lights.

We were growing accustomed to our pace. It was a process that evolved with each day. Even when walking together, there were times I still felt her remoteness. Most of the time, it was when we were quiet. I kept these anxieties to myself and didn't mention them, as she didn't mention hers. She was the type of person to keep everything until a boil.

Her silhouette was on the other-side of the shower glass. Her shadow crept up the floor and onto the far-side of the bed as I watched her wash her hair.

I feel asleep until I felt the sheets pull away from me.
“Did we shower this morning?” I said.
“I don’t think so. I can’t remember.”
“I left my shaving razor there I think. I’ll have to buy some later on our way out.”
“I don’t mind it. I like it like this.”
“Isn’t it annoying though. I mean does it tickle?”
“At first, but it’s softer now.”
I slid my arm underneath the pillows and felt the dampness her hair against mine. Smelled some lotion. I closed my eyes again and listened to the air conditioner hum. When it stopped, we were existed in an absolute stillness for a few seconds before it let out a quiet hiss. The light continued dimming.

When I woke up, the street lights had come on. My arm was numb and I tried to move it out from underneath her pillow without disturbing her. In the year that I was alone, I had forgotten the proper way to place it. So now I couldn't feel it. I sat on the bed and massaged my bicep.

Her chest moved in a slow rhythm. Small details; I hadn’t noticed it while we were in Taipei. Maybe I did and it was that I hadn’t paid attention. I still had my coughs, most of them in the morning, but the fever was gone. Maybe it wasn’t a fever and just nervousness. Sick in a different way. She was no longer some shallow breath in the middle of the night on a phone receiver.
“What are you thinking?”
I placed her hand on my forehead.

Our room overlooked the adjacent parking lot and I could see all the way down the street. A blue Subaru made its way towards the hostel. I tracked it as it parked in the lot. I had opened the curtains enough so that I could have a look outside.

“What time is it?” She was laying on her side now but still had her eyes closed. Her hand moved into the vacant space on the bed.
I pulled the sides of the curtains back together. “It’s almost eight.”
“Not sleeping?”
“I woke up to turn off the air conditioner. Feeling better?”
“Still sleepy.”
“Sorry if I woke you up.”
“I was dreaming just now.”
“About?”

She turned over onto her opposite shoulder when I got back in. Her back faced me and her hair was tangled into a nest on one side. I smoothed it out until her sentences trailed and I couldn’t tell if her scenes she was describing were beginning or ending.

Toronto Outdoor Art Festival July 10, 11,12, 2009

Toronto Outdoor Art Festival in Nathan Phillips Square at Toronto City

A sea of pop up canopies.

Five hundred artists exhibit their work in 14 categories including ceramics, computer-generated, drawing, fibre, glass, jewellery, metal, mixed media, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, watercolour and wood. Celebrating its 45th birthday this year, TOAE provides an alternative venue for established artists, as well as new talent and innovative art students.

An open-air alternative to conventional galleries and museums, TOAE has become one of Toronto's most anticipated events of the summer. "It's fun, it's engaging and it gets people excited about art," says Alison Eagles, Executive Director. "If you ever thought, why'd they do that? This is your chance to ask the makers themselves."

TOAE has been the spring board for many of Canada's top artists. Joanne Tod, Ken Danby and Jesse Boles have all set up booths in the sun during the early parts of their careers. TOAE has selected the cream of the crop to bring an impressive art experience to downtown Toronto every summer for 45 years!

There is a special student section where visitors can see young talent coming out of art schools across the country. Who knows, maybe you'll find the next Picasso - either way, come see it first on Nathan Phillips Square this July!

ASAP Tent and Party Rentals will rent or sell these pop up canopies in Toronto and the GTA.

Trinity Building

Trinity Building

Financial District, Lower Manhattan

The Trinity Building, designed by Francis Hatch Kimball and built in 1905, with an addition of 1907, is among the first Gothic-inspired skyscrapers in New York. Kimball's sensitive adaptation of this historical style establishes a sympathetic relationship between the skyscraper and its early Gothic Revival neighbor, Trinity Church and Churchyard. An entirely freestanding, steel-framed structure, the Trinity Building anticipates the skyscraper "cathedral" tower type which emerged just a few years later—of which the Wool worth Building is the most notable example. The spire of Trinity Church, the picturesque roof lines of the Trinity Building, its companion, the U.S. Realty Building, and the Woolworth Building tower form a romantic ensemble and create a striking, Gothic silhouette on Lower Broadway. Kimball, who had worked with the English Victorian Gothicist William Burges, had won acclaim as a designer of theaters and churches before receiving several important skyscraper commissions at the turn of the century; these tall buildings are known for their important innovations in the technology of caisson foundations. His strong predilection for Gothic design and his engineering expertise made Kimball the ideal architect for the Trinity Building commission.

Development of Lower Manhattan

Since the seventeenth century, Lower Manhattan has been New York's center of commerce and finance. By the last decades of the nineteenth century, many major American businesses had established headquarters there, and by the early twentieth century, the skyline of Lower Manhattan had been dramatically transformed as the early skyscrapers appeared. The advancement of elevator technology and new developments in structural engineering allowed architects to construct tall, spacious, and efficient office buildings, suited to the narrow sites of the island. In the 1880s and 1890s, Broadway became the main artery of the district.*^ Insurance companies, conscious of their public images, were among the first to erect structures celebrating their wealth and prosperity.

In 1898, the five boroughs were consolidated into Greater New York, awakening a strong awareness of the city's history and a sense of civic pride on the part of the general public. At this time, there was also a growing mistrust of monopolies and big business practices were severely criticized. Large corporations attempted to counter such sentiments by erecting buildings that would give an impression of not merely financial stability but of trustworthiness, tradition, and integrity, in order to imply that big business served the needs of the public.

As this new building type emerged, so did the need for appropriate stylistic and compositional expression. Architects found solutions in a variety of historical styles, but "none was more pervasive than classicism. The classical, tripartite division of the elevation into a base, a shaft, and a capital was widely accepted, in part because it could accommodate the large proportions of skyscrapers; the neo-Classical style was commonly employed for civic architecture, thus providing, by association, a positive image for the corporation

The Neo-Gothic ,Style

Although the Gothic Revival was influential in the United States during the nineteenth century, the style was rarely employed for commercial architecture and early skyscraper designs. Contemporary architectural criticism focused on the notion that no single historical style could accommodate the variety of building types demanded by modem life, and until "a distinct system of architectural forms appropriate to our age and civilization" was found, historical styles should co-exist. Despite the acceptance of stylistic variation, Gothic was generally not considered to be relevant to the design of office buildings, prior to the erection of the Woolworth Building, (Cass Gilbert, 1911-13, a designated New York City Landmark). Although few, the early, Gothic-inspired skyscrapers were massive, stylistically innovative structures which proved to have a great impact on Manhattan's skyline.

In addition to the Trinity and U.S. Realty Buildings, ether outstanding examples of Neo-Gothic skyscraper design are Gilbert's West Street Building, (1905); Kimball's enormous City Investing Building, (1908, demolished); and the Liberty Tower by Henry Ives Cobb, (1909, a designated New York City Landmark).

The subjective connotations of the Gothic style—spirituality, scholasticism, fraternity, craftsmanship—seem to have little to do with an architecture of capitalism. As the "Commercial Gothic" developed, however, critics made formal, stylistic comparisons between the verticality and thrust of Gothic cathedrals, (particularly their spires), and skyscrapers. Due to their location next to the early Gothic Revival Trinity Church, a sense of place and the picturesque qualities of the Gothic style were decisive factors in Kimbal

S. Jarmulowsky Bank Building

S. Jarmulowsky Bank Building

Canal Street, Lower East Side, Manhattan, New York City, New York, United States

Called “the first strictly high-class tall bank and office building” on the Lower East Side, with a design “equal in every respect [to] the highest grade banking buildings throughout the city,” the S. Jarmulowsky Bank Building was completed in 1912 as the architectural showpiece of one of the neighborhood’s most prominent bankers. Born in 1841 in what was then the Russian province of Lomza, its owner, Sender Jarmulowsky, established his business on the Lower East Side in 1873 and was operating at this location by 1878. Known for his honesty and conservative financial approach, Jarmulowsky grew wealthy over the following three decades providing steamship tickets and banking services to the immigrants of the surrounding neighborhood, which was unrivaled as the world’s largest Jewish community. He was also one of the Lower East Side’s leading philanthropists, playing an instrumental role in the construction of the Eldridge Street Synagogue, and serving as its first president.

In 1911, the firm of Rouse & Goldstone filed plans for this twelve-story building, which towered over the tenements of the Lower East Side when it was completed the following year. A pioneer in introducing the prevailing skyscraper aesthetic of New York’s major office districts to the neighborhood, the S. Jarmulowsky Bank Building was executed in the “modern Renaissance style” and the tripartite configuration that was standard for tall buildings of the time. Accessed through a classical corner entrance, Jarmulowsky’s banking hall and offices were housed in the building’s rusticated stone base; manufacturing lofts occupied the rest of the building, including its ornate terra-cotta crown. Sender Jarmulowsky died shortly after the building’s opening, and his bank failed in 1917. The building was then sold by his sons, and continued to house a variety of industrial tenants into the twenty-first century.

Today, the richly decorated S. Jarmulowsky Bank Building remains one of the area’s tallest and most distinctive buildings, and one of a handful of structures that “encapsulate the Jewish immigrant experience” on the Lower East Side.

Manhattan’s Lower East Side

The Lower East Side of Manhattan is one of New York’s, and the country’s, most storied neighborhoods. Historically defined as the area east of Broadway, extending from the vicinity of the Brooklyn Bridge north to 14th Street, its name is synonymous with the American immigrant experience. Although immigrants from around the world, from East Asia to Western Europe, have settled on the Lower East Side since the mid-nineteenth century, the neighborhood is most strongly associated with Jewish history and culture: from the 1880s to the 1920s, it was the country’s center of Jewish life and “the single largest Jewish community in the world, unrivaled … in terms of the sheer number of Jews who lived in close proximity to each other.”2 The historic core of this community was present-day Straus Square, located at the intersection of Canal Street, Essex Street, and East Broadway, just east of the skyscraper constructed by Sender Jarmulowsky for his bank.

Prior to the arrival of European fur traders and the Dutch West India Company, the neighborhood, like much of the Metropolitan Region, was populated by bands of Lenape Indians, who had an encampment in what would come to be known as Corlears Hook on the Lower East Side. Under the Dutch, the Lower East Side was divided into several large farms that were worked by slaves. By the mid-1700s, with New York under British control, the 300-acre farm located roughly between present-day Division and Rivington Streets was owned by James DeLancey, who served as Chief Justice, Lieutenant Governor, and Governor of New York Province. (His slave, Othello, was hanged as a conspirator following the slave uprising of 1741.) Upon DeLancey’s death in 1760, his son, also named James, inherited his property; the land was soon surveyed into blocks and lots, and Stanton, Delancey, Grand, and Rivington Streets were laid out.

A British Loyalist, DeLancey left New York for good in 1775, and after the Revolutionary War, his lands, like those of other Loyalists, were confiscated and sold off by the State. The S. Jarmulowsky Bank Building stands on property that was once part of the DeLancey farm, at the southwestern corner of Orchard Street—named for the DeLanceys’ “magnificent orchard”—and Canal Street, named for a canal constructed in the early nineteenth century to drain the fetid Collect Pond just north of City Hall.

Commercial buildings and residences for craftsmen and laborers were being constructed on the former DeLancey estate by the beginning of the nineteenth century, and by the 1820s, the Lower East Side was a desirable area. By the 1840s, the affluent had started abandoning the area south of Houston Street, and the neighborhood’s first purpose-built tenements were being c

Austrian Drape on 60 foot wide Lift System

Austrian Drape on 60 foot wide Lift System

Austrian drapes can be built with a variety of fullness. Usually 50-100% vertical fullness is needed, and 25-33% horizontal fullness. Ideally there will not be any seams in the cloth between the lift lines. As most textiles range between 48" and 60"wide you will most frequently see Austrian drapes manufactured with lift lines on 3 foot or 4 foot centers.

In this example the drape has 50% vertical fullness and 35% horizontal fullness with lift lineson 4 foot centers. This piece is a 30 x 60'w drape.

Silver Satin is a perfect fabric for building a classic austrian curtain. It is perfect for use in ballrooms and for theatres. This inherently flame retardant fabric is light weight but durable. The decorative concert lighting makes the stage look beautiful. Silver satin will take almost any color light making it extremely versatile.

HOW TO MEASURE FOR ROMAN SHADES. FOR ROMAN SHADES

How To Measure For Roman Shades. Window Shutter Hinges

How To Measure For Roman Shades

how to measure for roman shades

    roman shades
  • (Roman shade) A flat fabric shade that folds into neat horizontal pleats when raised.

  • (Roman Shade) A single sheet shade that rises up by lift cord in a tear drop or flat style that looks like an accordion folding up back and forth on itself. Reminds me of an opera house window treatment swag. Part of our Melhanna Shade collection.

  • (Roman Shade) This window treatment style consists of a fabric shade with wooden slats inserted horizontally at intervals down its entire length. It is raised and lowered via pull cord as with other blinds, but gathers soft folds as it does so.

    measure
  • determine the measurements of something or somebody, take measurements of; "Measure the length of the wall"

  • any maneuver made as part of progress toward a goal; "the situation called for strong measures"; "the police took steps to reduce crime"

  • Ascertain the size, amount, or degree of (something) by using an instrument or device marked in standard units or by comparing it with an object of known size

  • Ascertain the size and proportions of (someone) in order to make or provide clothes for them

    how to
  • Practical advice on a particular subject; that gives advice or instruction on a particular topic

  • A how-to or a how to is an informal, often short, description of how to accomplish some specific task. A how-to is usually meant to help non-experts, may leave out details that are only important to experts, and may also be greatly simplified from an overall discussion of the topic.

Turquoise for Dr Robi Ludwig

Turquoise for Dr Robi Ludwig

picture was shot by my dear friend Baqar Nassar ..

I got a message on my Facebook wall from another dear friend Dr Robi Ludwig, she loves turquoise,,as much as I do or more...she wants one for Valentines Day..

Much of the turquoise I have is from Nishapur Iran.
The two big ones on my hand have a strange story, I got one of them the one on the left hand from a Indo-Iranian jewellery fair that was held at Bandra Reclamation..by Nassar of Lucky Hotel ..the guy who sold it to me was called Fairuz Iranian name turquoise ..my name is derived from the Iranian root Firoze.

We became good friends and because of my attire people thronged to his stall, he made a killing and gave me the turquoise stone at a very special price, he also gave me a ruby ring..I too bought a lot of amber from him, Kerba..

The ring on my right hand I found at a stall at Bhendi Bazar its an identical twin, just two shades lighter , normally I would dip my rings in badam oil, to get the depth of color ..and it gives a luster too.

I have a humongous collection of rings, many I have given away to some of my Gurus..
but my favorite are the claws and my set of black Sulaimani Akeek or agate.

I also have a huge rocky turquoise pendant from Tibet.. and two bead turquoise necklaces from Ladakh..

About Turquoise

Turquoise is an opaque, blue-to-green mineral that is a hydrous phosphate of copper and aluminium, with the chemical formula CuAl6(PO4)4(OH)8·4H2O. It is rare and valuable in finer grades and has been prized as a gem and ornamental stone for thousands of years owing to its unique hue. In recent times turquoise, like most other opaque gems, has been devalued by the introduction of treatments, imitations, and synthetics onto the market, some difficult to detect even by experts.

The substance has been known by many names, but the word turquoise was derived around 16th century from the French language either from the word for Turkish (Turquois) or dark-blue stone (pierre turquin).[4] This may have arisen from a misconception: turquoise does not occur in Turkey but was traded at Turkish bazaars to Venetian merchants who brought it to Europe.[4] The colour, however, has been employed extensively in the decorative tiles adorning Turkish places of worship and homes for hundreds of years, beginning with the Seljuks, or was derived from the colour of the Mediterranean Sea on the southern Turkish coast and the association quite possibly has caused the name to take root.

Even the finest of turquoise is fracturable, reaching a maximum hardness of just under 6, or slightly more than window glass.[2] Characteristically a cryptocrystalline mineral, turquoise almost never forms single crystals and all of its properties are highly variable. Its crystal system is proven to be triclinic via X-ray diffraction testing. With lower hardness comes lower specific gravity (high 2.90, low 2.60) and greater porosity: These properties are dependent on grain size. The lustre of turquoise is typically waxy to subvitreous, and transparency is usually opaque, but may be semitranslucent in thin sections. Colour is as variable as the mineral's other properties, ranging from white to a powder blue to a sky blue, and from a blue-green to a yellowish green. The blue is attributed to idiochromatic copper while the green may be the result of either iron impurities (replacing aluminium) or dehydration.

The refractive index (as measured by sodium light, 589.3 nm) of turquoise is approximately 1.61 or 1.62; this is a mean value seen as a single reading on a gemmological refractometer, owing to the almost invariably polycrystalline nature of turquoise. A reading of 1.61–1.65 (birefringence 0.040, biaxial positive) has been taken from rare single crystals. An absorption spectrum may also be obtained with a hand-held spectroscope, revealing a line at 432 nanometres and a weak band at 460 nanometres (this is best seen with strong reflected light). Under longwave ultraviolet light, turquoise may occasionally fluoresce green, yellow or bright blue; it is inert under shortwave ultraviolet and X-rays.

Turquoise is insoluble in all but heated hydrochloric acid. Its streak is a pale bluish white and its fracture is conchoidal, leaving a waxy lustre. Despite its low hardness relative to other gems, turquoise takes a good polish. Turquoise may also be peppered with flecks of pyrite or interspersed with dark, spidery limonite veining.

[edit] Formation

As a secondary mineral, turquoise apparently forms by the action of percolating acidic aqueous solutions during the weathering and oxidation of pre-existing minerals. For example, the copper may come from primary copper sulfides such as chalcopyrite or from the secondary carbonates malachite or azurite; the aluminium may derive from feldspar; and the phosphorus from apatite. Climate factors appear to play an important role as turquoise is typically found in arid regions, filling or encrusting cavities and fractures in typically high

For 4,000 years, ever since a pharaoh first raised a sail, or his slaves an oar, Nile cruises have plied between Luxor and Aswan. The modern voyage typically takes three days and at times can be almost hectic.

There is a schedule to keep and the river gets crowded. In high season, with everyone wanting to do their sightseeing at the coolest times of day, you can be piled into sites already heaving with visitors from other boats. In some places the cruise ships berth 10 abreast, so passengers on the last vessel to arrive have to traipse across nine other ships to reach the shore. Nevertheless, a Nile cruise remains one of the classic journeys that everyone should make at least once.

There are ways to calm the pace. You can choose a longer, more relaxed itinerary or travel on one of the smaller and slower sailing cruisers called dahabeeyahs. In whatever style you do it, your trip will almost certainly include a day trip by air from Aswan to Abu Simbel. However, there is a real alternative. Go to Abu Simbel by all means: it's one of the fabled spectacles of the planet. But do it the way the ancients did. Go by boat.

Cruise ships can't pass the dams at Aswan so you have to change vessels before spending another three days' cruising south on the waters of Lake Nasser. It could hardly be more different. If you want a measure of just how different, consider this: on the Luxor-Aswan section of the river there are some 400 cruise ships, though they seldom all operate at the same time. On Lake Nasser, there are six.

Lake Nasser was created by the Aswan High Dam, which was completed in 1970. Named after Egypt's second president, Gamal Abdel Nasser, it's one of the largest man-made lakes in the world. Nearly a third of its 340-mile length is in Sudan.

Whatever its economic benefits – electricity, increased agricultural land – it also brought devastation to the riverside in what was the old kingdom of Nubia. More than 50,000 people, whose homes were to be inundated, had to be resettled. With surprising vehemence one of my guides in Cairo declared, "What Nasser did to the Nubians was a crime."

Not just people were moved. Some of the oldest monuments of human civilisation were uprooted, dismantled and reconstructed above the lake. The temples of Abu Simbel are the most famous but there were more than 20 others. Garnered from the river banks by international teams of engineers and archaeologists, they were taken to safety in an extraordinary rescue operation instigated by Unesco. One temple, Amada, was put on rails and dragged uphill, intact, for more than a mile, 900 tons of it. All nine sites visited on this cruise would be under water had they not been transplanted, by anything up to 35 miles. Now they have been grouped along the lake shore in three small clusters, making them easier to see and manage.

With the exception of Abu Simbel, the temples are small, but their chamber walls are adorned with some of the most graphic tableaux in Egypt, vibrantly coloured paintings and reliefs. Together they make a High Definition documentary of dynasties already ancient to the ancient Greeks. We had our own guides and we had the temples to ourselves, landing at each by launch, and escorted by two white-uniformed policemen toting automatic rifles. A gesture, one suspects, if not a job, for the boys.

Our ship was the Kasr Ibrim. Built in 1997 in the style of a Twenties steamship, expressly to work on Lake Nasser, it was not dissimilar to the old Post Boat that plied between Aswan and Wadi Halfa, in the Sudan, at the turn of the last century. Its picture is in the Nubian Museum at Aswan, which was donated 11 years ago by the Egyptian government as atonement for the indignities done to the Nubian people and the near eradication of their culture.

The Post Boat was little more than a steel hull with a large, colonial-style pavilion on top. Kasr Ibrim is like that, but its pavilion has four storeys. The interior, efficiently air-conditioned, is art deco in style. The lounge would pass for a set in an episode of Poirot. Besides the parquet floor, timber panelling and hefty, period armchairs, the room is planted with wood-clad columns. Their capitals are like stylised lotus flowers, the "blooms" illuminated behind alabaster lights. The decor is a front – the ship has more modern facilities than the retro style would suggest. All but seven of the 65 cabins have balconies; ten of them are suites. There's a sauna and Turkish bath on the bottom deck and a pool and Jacuzzi on top. Every cabin has a fridge and a bath, whirlpool baths in the suites. I would reduce Kasr Ibrim's official five stars to four, if only because every meal but one was a buffet. As for the food, travellers of the early 20th century would be familiar with t

    shutter release
  • The button on a camera that is pressed to make the shutter open

  • The mechanism, usually a button on the top of the camera, that activates the shutter to expose the film.

  • The button you press to take the picture. Often half pressing the Shutter Release activates the autofocus, auto exposure and vibration reduction, and a full press is required to actually take the picture.

  • Typically refers to a wired remote control (also called a "bulb") that essentially behaves like a camera's shutter release button. The use of a shutter or cable release can reduce camera vibration over using the shutter button itself.

Moon Gear - (Waning Crescent - January 13, 2010)

Moon Gear - (Waning Crescent - January 13, 2010)

Part of my Moon Project, to shoot a moon a day for a month. I jinxed myself. In yesterday's moonshot, I talked about being lucky that the weather has cooperated every night (and day) so far for this project.... As I was waiting for the clouds to clear this morning right before sunrise (and just after the moonrise) and just hoping, hoping I could get the last Waning Crescent (tomorrow is a New Moon), it started raining!

My first thought was, It's January and it's raining.... well at least its not snow! (I lived twenty years in the Rockies, still do part-time). Now I am just bummed. No moon shot today...

So, as I was thinking about what to shoot instead... I busted out the old Nikon Coolpix, my trusted backup camera. In fact the first half of my photostream to this point was taken with my now 'backup camera' and today used it to take a picture of my 'Moon Gear'.

This is the exact setup I have been using to shoot the moon for this project. I only started using the tripod and remote shutter-release about two days ago. Until then I was taking all my shots hand-held.... same setup exactly, just no tripod or remote button.

Day 23/365 : Remote Shutter Release Fun

Day 23/365 : Remote Shutter Release Fun

This photo was shot in my yard at my home in Oak Hill, Florida on 2/11/2011. My wife bought me a wireless remote shutter release for Valentine's Day along with a photo backpack for all my gear. I was just testing it out and having some fun. This is a very long exposure of 156 seconds and it was really hard for me to stay totally still so that's why I am a little blurry. The shutter release works great though although it only has about a 15 foot range. Sonja says I look like a creeper in this photo but I was going for a dark theme so I guess I achieved it.

Shot with my Canon EOS 40D, Tamron AF 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC LD Aspherical IF Macro Zoom lens, and Shoot RC-300 wireless remote shutter release. Shot in manual mode. I edited out where you could see that I was holding the remote as well as various other adjustments in Lightroom 3 and Photoshop CS5.
