Wood is a hard, fibrous tissue found in many plants. It has been used for centuries for both fuel and as a construction material for several types of living areas such as houses. It is an organic material, a natural composite of cellulose fibers (which are strong in tension) embedded in a matrix of lignin which resists compression. In the strict sense wood is produced as secondary xylem in the stems of trees (and other woody plants). In a living tree it transfers water and nutrients to the leaves and other growing tissues, and has a support function, enabling woody plants to reach large sizes or to stand up for themselves. Wood may also refer to other plant materials with comparable properties, and to material engineered from wood, or wood chips or fiber.

People have used wood for millennia for many purposes, primarily as a fuel or as a construction material for making houses, tools, weapons, furniture, packaging, artworks, and paper. Wood can be dated by carbon dating and in some species by dendrochronology to make inferences about when a wooden object was created. The year-to-year variation in tree-ring widths and isotopic abundances gives clues to the prevailing climate at that time.

Formation
Wood, in the strict sense, is yielded by trees, which increase in diameter by the formation, between the existing wood and the inner bark, of new woody layers which envelop the entire stem, living branches, and roots. Technically this is known as secondary growth; it is the result of cell division in the vascular cambium, a lateral meristem, and subsequent expansion of the new cells.

Growth rings
Where there are clear seasons, growth can occur in a discrete annual or seasonal pattern, leading to growth rings; these can usually be most clearly seen on the end of a log, but are also visible on the other surfaces. If these seasons are annual these growth rings are referred to as annual rings. Where there is no seasonal difference growth rings are likely to be indistinct or absent.

If there are differences within a growth ring, then the part of a growth ring nearest the center of the tree, and formed early in the growing season when growth is rapid, is usually composed of wider elements. It is usually lighter in color than that near the outer portion of the ring, and is known as earlywood or springwood. The outer portion formed later in the season is then known as the latewood or summerwood. However, there are major differences, depending on the kind of wood.

Knots

A knot on a tree at the Garden of the Gods public park in Colorado Springs, Colorado (October 2006).A knot is a particular type of imperfection in a piece of wood; it will affect the technical properties of the wood, usually for the worse, but may be exploited for artistic effect. In a longitudinally sawn plank, a knot will appear as a roughly circular "solid" (usually darker) piece of wood around which the grain of the rest of the wood "flows" (parts and rejoins). Within a knot, the direction of the wood (grain direction) is up to 90 degrees different from the grain direction of the regular wood.

In the tree a knot is either the base of a side branch or a dormant bud. A knot (when the base of a side branch) is conical in shape (hence the roughly circular cross-section) with the tip at the point in stem diameter at which the plant's cambium was located when the branch formed as a bud.

During the development of a tree, the lower limbs often die, but may persist for a time, sometimes years. Subsequent layers of growth of the attaching stem are no longer intimately joined with the dead limb, but are grown around it. Hence, dead branches produce knots which are not attached, and likely to drop out after the tree has been sawn into boards.

In grading lumber and structural timber, knots are classified according to their form, size, soundness, and the firmness with which they are held in place. This firmness is affected by, among other factors, the length of time for which the branch was dead while the attaching stem continued to grow.

Knots materially affect cracking (known in the US as checking, and the UK as shakes) and warping, ease in working, and cleavability of timber. They are defects which weaken timber and lower its value for structural purposes where strength is an important consideration. The weakening effect is much more serious when timber is subjected to forces perpendicular to the grain and/or tension than where under load along the grain and/or compression. The extent to which knots affect the strength of a beam depends upon their position, size, number, and condition. A knot on the upper side is compressed, while one on the lower side is subjected to tension. If there is a season check in the knot, as is often the case, it will offer little resistance to this tensile stress. Small knots, however, may be located along the neutral plane of a beam and increase the strength by preventing longitudinal shearing. Knots in a

One of the great duties of God's Church, to which she has ever been most faithful, is the celebration of her saints. From end to end of the year the Church's saints are the theme of her daily thanksgiving and praise. They are her heroes, and therefore she honours them; just as the world celebrates its own heroes, records their great deeds, and builds up monuments to perpetuate their names and their glory. The saints were the living and most faithful representatives of Christ our Lord, of his virtues, his love, his actions, his power, so that He lived in them, and wrought in them, and through them, the redemption of men; therefore the Church honours, not so much the saint, as Christ our Lord in the saint; for, in truth, the wisdom of saintliness which she celebrates, wherever it is found, is nothing else, as described to us in Scripture, than

A vapour of the power of God, and a certain pure emanation of the glory of the Almighty God;
The brightness of eternal light,
And the unspotted mirror of God's majesty,
And the image of His goodness;
And through nations she conveys herself into holy souls,
She makes the friends of God and prophets.

Nor does the Church's honour of the saints derogate from that of God, as some say; otherwise the Lord, who is jealous of His divine power and glory, would never command us to praise the saints as he does in the words of my text, and in many other parts of the Holy Scriptures:

Praise ye the Lord in his saints,
God is wonderful in His saints.

Nay, so far from lessening our love and praise of God, the saints are the very channel through which praise is most acceptably given to Him, and if the Scriptures command us to praise the Lord in all His works, how much more in His saints — the masterpieces of nature and grace!

Let no one, therefore, suppose that we are assembled today to dishonour God by honouring his saint: let no one imagine that we are come together to bless and praise other than Our God Himself, the Father of lights, for every best and every perfect gift which He has given us through our great Apostle, Saint Patrick.
He was a man of renown, for his work and his name are known and celebrated by all men; and our father in his generation, for he begat us to God by the Gospel.
He was, moreover, a man of mercy, for, when he might have lived for himself and for the enjoyment of his own ease, he chose rather to sacrifice himself, and to make his life cheap and of no account in his sight, and this through the self-same mercy which brought the Lord Jesus Christ forth from the bosom of the Father, namely, mercy for a people who were perishing.
His godly deeds have not failed, for the Lord crowned his labours with blessings of abundance.

His seed and his glory shall not be forsaken, for ' they are the children of saints, and look for that life which God will give to those that never change their faith from Him.
Seeing, therefore, that all the conditions of the Inspired Word have been so strikingly fulfilled in our saint, is it wonderful that we should also desire to fulfil the rest of the command, Let the people show forth His wisdom, and the Church declare His praise?

I propose, therefore, for your consideration — first, the character of the saint himself; secondly, the work of his Apostleship; and thirdly, the merciful providence of Almighty God toward the Irish Church and the Irish people. The light of Christianity had burned for more than four hundred years before its rays penetrated to Ireland.

Our hand wrought iron pieces are made for us in the Lancaster County, PA. Amish Community. With classic style and functional design, these versatile pieces blend into most decorating schemes. This is solid iron--not wire. These pieces are finished in satin black and work well in any room. This is our large wrought iron extension curtain rod. Basically, this fits a double window and can also be used for a shower curtain rod. (We also offer a smaller rod-search for item B0002B035Y)This has hand wrought loop ends. It is a 2 piece rod--one half slides inside the other. Closed, this measures about 38 inches long and opens to about 62 inches. Our hand wrought iron arch hooks are included for mounting. You will need to provide your own screws or nails, etc, determined by the surface you are mounting it to. The arches hold the rod approx. 3 inches from the wall. The thickest part of the rod is 3/4 inches in diameter. This is hand made wrought iron in a satin black finish.

1985: Leningrad, USSR

The former Soviet Museum of Scientific Atheism, better known as St Isaac's Cathedral in St Petersburg, photographed in December, 1985. Internally, it is the second biggest cathedral in the world.

Under Stalin in the 1930s, by which time the city had been renamed Leningrad, the building was cleared of all religious clutter and turned into a Museum of Scientific Atheism. Exhibits included a pendulum which proved the rotation of the earth.

Stalin's enthusiasm for Scientific Atheism led to the regime treating faith and belief in God as a form of mental illness. Anyone who was openly Christian had their path to promotion at work blocked, and many professions closed to them.

Thousands of people who stubbornly persisted in the Christian faith were treated as delusional, and found themselves carted off to special hospitals for treatment and re-education. Many of these people ended up in the gulags, a system of concentration camps, many in northern Siberia, where millions of people met their deaths.

Scientific Atheism also promoted the idea that bringing up your kids in the Christian tradition was a form of child abuse. Inevitably, many children of militant Christians were taken into care by the State, to be brought up in vast orphanages.

Stalin's terror ended in the 1950s, but a vow of silence seemed to have settled on the Russian people like snow, and the events of those days were hardly mentioned. By the time I took this photograph in 1985, the museum had closed, although some exhibits were still in situ, including the pendulum.

When I revisited in 1988, the original religious integrity of the cathedral had been restored, apparently by order of Gorbachev himself, a year before the fall of the Berlin Wall. Today, the Cathedral is once again the seat of the Orthodox Patriarchate of St Petersburg, and the liturgy of the Russian Orthodox Church rings out again within its walls.

I adore vintage cocktail rings but these are little over-the-top for me to actually wear on a casual basis. The blue stone is HUGE, at least an inch across. The apartment had been cleared out when I came back to Modesto. The television was gone; the stereo system, our bikes in the garage, so were the records, the CDs, the DVDs. It was the same in the bedrooms. Jake’s laptop. My computer, the shoes, the cameras, anything that was worth something.

I set my bags and laundry down in the middle of the room--I had only been gone a few days; it was the first time I had been home in more than a year. I tried to call Jake but it went straight to voice mail. I didn’t bother leaving a message and called the police instead. I stayed in bed until they came over to collect whatever information they needed. They surveyed the apartment, checked the locks on the front and side doors, had a look at the window latches. It wasn’t the first time, Jake and I had been through this before, and by now, I knew it was a pointless exercise.

When they left I went back to bed and slept until ten.

Jake was in the living room when I woke up. I had heard the shower in the bathroom, then the sink and stove fan out in the kitchen. He was sprawled across the sofa with one arm behind a cushion when I walked into the room. He was reading my copy of Dubliners when he saw me.

The sight of Jake irritated me. His eyes were red and glazed, the room smelled like sweat and chemicals. He was high. It was a given.

“What the hell happened?” I said.
“We were robbed. What else?” he said.
“We were robbed. You seem pretty laid-back about it.”
“What else can we do?”
“I called the police.”
“What did they say?”
“The same thing as last time. The copy said we’re probably the unluckiest people in the neighborhood.”
The entire time, he did not once, look up from his book.
“He’s right. Twice in six months.”
“The fuck.”

I tolerated Jake’s habits. So long as they did not interfere with my world. We kept to ourselves. When I came home, I went stayed in my room. He stayed in his. Our apartment was in the back of the lot. Fairly secluded and under constant shade. Before, if I was not here, then I was at Dorothy’s place on campus. She rarely came over to my place.

“Is that all you have to say?” I said.
Jake put the book down face down on his stomach.
“Are you saying it’s my fault?”
“Look man, I just know that I was gone for a week. You were here. That’s all. Did you lock the doors? The backyard window?”
“Look, just say it. If you think this was me. Then say it.”
“Did you sell all our shit for coke?”
Jake sighed and picked the book back up. I had already forgotten that it was my book.
“I didn’t.”
Same answer as last time.
“You fucking asshole.”
Jake kept reading.

Maybe this time I’d press charges. On who? On what?

There was a time when we’d get high together. I thought about the first time he broke me in; I was puking out all night and called Dorothy five consecutive times to tell her that the Planet Earth documentaries were syncing perfectly with the Coltrane record we were playing, and that she should come over “Are you high?”
“I’m not baby, I’m not. Come over. You have this.”
“No Adrian. I’m not coming over. You are; I don’t want to see you if you’re like this”
She hung and didn’t pick up my calls for the rest of the week.

What would I say about that?

I got my keys from the room and drove to Dorothy’s. All our shit was old anyway; I was reasoning with myself on the way there. Besides the stereo and computer, they wouldn’t be able to pawn our things for much. But I realized that was probably what they wanted to begin with. I rolled the window down and turned the radio up.

Dorothy lived across the street from campus. It was a fifteen minute drive on the freeway. I pulled into the lot of apartment complex. I was about to get out of the car when I remembered that the parking pass she had given me was expired, so I backed out and parked on the sidewalk across the street. A month already--I was barely counting the days.

The lights were on in the apartment when I walked by. Same vases on the kitchen window sill but all the flowers were gone. They should be. After all, it was had been quite a while, I didn’t expect them to last. Not out there on the window sill in the middle of summer.

I rang the door bell twice.
“Hey! Adrian,” she said, “What are you doing here?”
She stood in the doorway and smiled.
“I thought I’d come by and say hi. Do you mind if I come in?” I said.
Dorothy opened the door for me and let me in.
“Do you want something to drink?” she said.
“I can use one.”
“Yeah, it’s warm tonight. A beer? Sorry we don’t have much right now. I didn’t know you’d be coming over”
“It’s alright. I’ll take one.”


She grabbed two bottles from the refrigerator and brought them to the sofa.
“Where are you roomates?”
“Jacky’s back in Los Angeles with her family and Rachel’s at her boyfriend’s place.”

Week Thirty: The ball to my nose ring fell out...Again. It's kind of annoying to have to keep checking it, but oh well. I'll buy another ball sometime eventually. He encouraged them to view boxing and physical fitness as a form of social therapy —and maybe a means for some to supplement breadline wages and a dole queue pittance. Jack chuckled over their earthy humour and, with loyal discretion, kept the more slanderous stories to himself Never once did he lose his enthusiasm and affection for the sport.

He was born in the Whitehall district of Bristol and there was boxing in his blood. His father, a stud groom who looked after six horses at the Co-op stables, was also a lightweight booth fighter with personal experience of bareknuckle contests at Purdown. Jack was one of nine children — six girls and three boys — in a tight-knit family. But any hopes he cherished of becoming a boxer himself were cruelly dashed because of a tubercular condition affecting his right knee. He needed crutches for the first 10 years of his life and went on to have two major operations. “I’d have loved to be a champ” he confides. Instead, after starting work with a coal firm, he became a barber from the age of 20. High court judges, leading civic and sporting figures and members of the aristocracy were among his customers at Trowbridge’s in Broad Street.

Physical culture emerged as something of a new fashion for boys and young men in the pre-war years. Jack believed in looking after the body and he started giving body-building lessons in his front room. His letter-headings and visiting cards referred to the Art of Self-Defence and advised potential pupils to “learn to box without punishment”. He went on to operate from nine different gyms in the city. His first club was a room at the back of the Paxton Arms in Easton Road. Others included the Prince Albert, Two Mile Hill, while at the Rock Tavern, Olly Lodge, Speedwell, he had an improvised ring marked out on the cobbles. “I used to put down sawdust!”

But at a time when there were too many signs in working class Bristol of empty stomachs and hollow cheeks, Jack Phelps provided a sense of purpose for boys with no money and no job. He started his popular Speedwell Boxing Club in 1933. Three years later he took out a second’s licence — and a manager’s from 1938 right through to 1975 Today in his bachelor flat in a tower block overlooking Barton Hill, he remains sprightly; he never goes to bed without his obligatory 15 minutes of exercises, even though he is now in his mid-70s. His home is stacked with memories: cuttings, faded photographs, letters from exfighters. “Mr. Boxing”, as he is known, will never be a lonely man.

Yes, of course I’d have loved to be a boxer myself. The old knee stopped that but I never spared myself when it came to sparring. I’d take on six or seven, one after the other. I told the boys they could have a penny if they hit me on the nose, a shilling if they could make it bleed! But they never managed to hit me. My boxing was self-taught, in front of the mirror. I knew the third button on the waistcoat was the solar plexus. I watched the experts and read avidly. And I really did spar hundreds of rounds. Boxing had to be my life. And it still is.

I applied for my second’s licence and it cost me five bob. All the kids I looked after were so game. You didn’t throw the towel in. The manager’s licence two years later set me back two guineas. So now, the obvious question is which of all the boxers I handled was the best. It has got to be Jimmy Jury, the mild-mannered taxi driver from Barnstaple. They say when he had a fare in the taxi he was an object lesson in charm and good manners. You should have seen him in a ring.

Jimmy was well known as a booth fighter for Sam McKeowen and I can still picture him performing on Horfield Common and Fishponds. He travelled all round the country with the booths and it was sometimes difficult to run him to ground. I used to get hold of him by sending a telegram c/o the fairground. Do you know, Jimmy invariably turned up, complete with his kit. He was always reliable. He had 21 fights in the four years I handled him and he nearly always came out clearly on top. A cool customer was Jimmy — he never wanted to know his opponent. Only the amount of the purse, and no-one could blame him for that!

Jury, who was to become West of England champion, fought as both a lightweight and welterweight. He really was an incredible bloke. He was so easy-going and calm in some respects. Before a fight, he’d go into, the little dressing room and immediately fall asleep. We’d have to wake him a

Compton Bassett House, near Chippenham, is extremely pretty, and stands next to the 11th-century church of St Swithun's. Recent owners include Lord Foster of Thames Bank, but the house has been properly modernised only by the current owner, Paul Cripps, and his wife, Selene.

The genial Mr Cripps explains how he came to be here: “I sold my printing business when I was 40, invested in commercial property, and went to live in Bermuda.” Ten years ago he returned to England and bought the house, commissioning Michael Phillips, an architect for the chic Malmaison and Hotel du Vin group, to smarten it up. “It was supposed to be a six-month project costing half a million and ended up taking three years and ?3million”, he says.

When water appeared each morning in the hole he had dug in the basement for a new pool, he had to fit a new drain at a cost of ?35,000. The house used so much power that Cripps was forced to install a new electricity substation, this time for ?350,000. The black-and-white stone floor in the lobby by the pool (lined with Doric columns), is copied from a film. “I saw it in Pierce Brosnan's house in The Thomas Crown Affair”, Cripps says, “and immediately rang with instructions for it to be copied.”

Husband and wife have separate bathrooms. His in Jerusalem limestone and African red granite, hers with an island theme, with arched Japanese-style bridges leading to the shower. “I had it tanked so fish could swim round the island,” Cripps says, “but then I thought ‘what happens if we go away?'.” He also spent $12,000 (?6,100) on American fridges, “but they made such a noise I ripped them out.” The latest flourish is a formal garden with fountains and temples.

When Selene decided she “didn't like white walls”, her husband employed two pavement painters, “very good artists”, and installed them in his house for 18 months while they painted his son's bedroom with a Treasure Island theme, promising him they would replace the pirates with topless women when he was older.

Cripps did sometimes go to great lengths to save money. When the price for English limestone for the pool came to ?200,000, he sent three lorries to Portugal and had the stone cut there for ?20,000. When the bill for the new woodwork, floors and doors began to look steep, he bought a local joinery company so that he could get the best deal. So why sell? “I'm going to downsize”, he says. “I already have a house in [Knightsbridge] and a lovely new home in Bermuda. And I get fed up having to get in the car for a paper or a pint of milk.”

number 23! this is the only piercing i've had that was totally impulsive. i'd done no research, knew nothing about it, but it seemed fun so i went for it. it was, unequivocally, the most bizarre piercing i've ever had. almost no pain, but everything about every sensation felt utterly WEIRD. there's no other way to describe it. the clamp felt weird, the needle felt weird, the insertion and screwing the ball on felt weird, and it's weird to look at and weird to feel inside my mouth. but i love it! it's so fun. i'm not entirely sure what i'll replace that barbell with, but i'm leaning toward some kind of small ring.

this was the first one i actually had to stop beforehand and say "wait, i'm scared." at the last second, the thought of the clamp on that tiny tiny membrane sucked all the courage out of me and i had to take a couple deep breaths, then it was fine.
