A Sean Penn Moment

A Sean Penn Moment

The Emperor fully understands the importance of a strong media presence to the modern ruler and will pose endlessly for his press agent (Dad) but, there are limits to even his patience.

When he's had enough handling, the hands go out, the help is waved off quite vigorously and no more shall he cooperate until he's had an hour or two's solace inside his chamber.

The mask he's wearing is his SiPAP machine, which provides positive air flow to keep his lungs inflated. Currently it runs in biphasic mode, which means he also gets a little puff of extra pressure every second or so to remind him to breathe. Being so early to the world, the Emperor was not yet trained in some of the basics and he'll periodically forget to breathe.

This is normal for premature babies as, well, it wasn't intended that they be breathing quite yet. He forgets very seldom though and will likely have the biphasic mode turned off in the next week. He'll still have the mask for a month or more, possibly right up until his due date.

Apparently, these instinctual behaviours kick in when they're going to kick in and it's different for all premature babies.

He's doing yeoman's work with some other in-stink-tual behaviours though. He may need the occasional reminder to breathe but, everything's working very well on the other end of things. Perhaps too well! ;-)

Edward's story

Edward's story

Our baby son, Edward, was born prematurely at 27 weeks in 1991.

My waters had broken at 22 weeks and I was in hospital for five weeks before I went into labour. The amniotic fluid was leaking all this time.

The medical staff did all they could to stop the labour progressing but our little baby wanted to be born.

As the amniotic fluid was very low in the womb the baby's lungs did not get a chance to form properly and so Edward only lived for one day.

He was a gorgeous blond haired baby and despite being born early he weighed 2lb 10ozs and I think was probably on his way to being a large baby like his big brother. It was the unhappiest and saddest time of our lives and we will never forget him.

I know that things might have been different if he had been born now and he may have lived.

I fully support Action Medical Research in the Touching Tiny Lives Campaign and have already donated many times

Kind regards

Tricia
