Mike's Bike Station
My exercise/productivity setup. Bike is a Trek 7300. It's fairly easy to be productive and still get a good workout. It's a cheap storage rack attached to the wall, with some pieces of wood bolted on where the monitor/keyboard rests. There are also two other
pieces of wood that form an arm where I can use a trackball (as well as hold a phone and a drink). I'm not a big fan of trackballs, but in this application the trackball is ideal. For those wondering about the seat, it's a "Spongy Wonder."
Tall Trike
not done yet, but will be soon!
still have to 1) get a long chain, 2) adjust handle bars, 3) add support to the white section of the trike.
The biggest advantage of this over a tall bike is you don't fall over when you stop...
Does anyone have a suggestion for a color to paint the whole thing when it's done?

The Four Seasons Hotel, New York
The Four Seasons Hotel, New York
57 East 57th Street
New York, New York, U.S.A. 10022
The Bar
---------
In 1987 William Zeckendorf Jr. assembled land on 57th Street between Park and Madison Avenue, consisting of four empty 5-floor buildings on the north side of 57th and an adjoining 58th Street site. Zeckendorf determined the best use for the site was a luxury hotel and began discussions with hotel operators.
One of the parcels at 50 East 58th - is the site of the former 200-room Blackstone Hotel and its restaurant Lottie's Dogwood Room.
Zeckendorf sought I.M. Pei (whose firm designed the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center) to design the luxury hotel. Zeckendorf Jr's father William Zeckendorf Sr. provided Pei with his first design job in 1946.
During the same time Harunori Takahashi, who some called the king of resort development projects in the South Pacific, admired Robert H Burns the founder of Regent Hotels International (a Hong Kong hotel company owned by an American!). Burns' first globally recognized luxury hotel, The Regent Hong Kong, opened in 1980. (It is an InterContinental now and not quite its former self).
Takahashi had just bought from Robert Burn's company the The Regent Sydney and was looking for more hotels to buy through the company he controlled - EIE International Corp. (Electronic & International Enterprises got its start in the 1940s importing from the US magnetic disc tapes). Takahashi also bought 30% of Regent Hotels from Robert Burns who retained 65%. The Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation owns 5 percent.
Burns knew William Zeckendorf Jr. and he knew Takahashi wanted to own an extraordinary hotel in New York City. The concept of a tall limestone luxury hotel on the 25,000 square foot lot was ready to move forward.
The hotel was announced in January 1989. It was expected to be the grandest hotel built in New York since the Waldorf=Astoria. The original plan was for 400 rooms and a main tower of 46-stories. A consortium of six Japanese banks led by Long-Term Credit Bank (LTCB) secured construction financing. The hotel was named Regent New York Hotel and to be managed by Regent International Hotels of Hong Kong. William Zeckendorf, Jr. acted as development consultant. Architects were I.M. Pei and Frank Williams, and Tishman Construction was the construction manager. (Frank Williams designed the 55-story W hotel in Times Square)
The interiors were to be designed by John F. Saladino, who was replaced by Hong Kong based Chhada, Siembieda & Associates, which was founded by Chandu Chhada and Don Siembieda in 1980.
Total costs for the 372-room project were estimated at $370 million - a million per room. By completion time the cost had swelled to $477 million, or $1.3 million a room.
A contemporary-modern approach was taken for the Regent, not a classical motif. The hotel's 52-story tower required a series of cascading set backs to comply with strict zoning requirements. Custom designed 12-foot decorative lanterns grace the upper levels. Honey-colored French Mangy limestone from France clad the facade.
The standard guest rooms are 610 sq ft with 10'4" ceilings. Fiddleback English Sycamore was used for all cabinetwork, doors and furniture.
Robert Burns was a stickler for detail especially on how to build a bathroom. Burns is quoted saying "I just feel that nobody should sit in a tub where somebody stood." The Regent New York baths are built with a glass enclosed shower stall and separate soaking tub.
Just after the hotel's topping off event in 1990 the Japanese real estate market imploded. EIE and Regent Hotels was forced to sell the Regent hotel chain and hotels under development at that time were in New York City, Bali, Milan, and Istanbul - all were subsequently opened as Four Seasons.
One of the major figures during Japan's bubble economy years was EIE's Harunori Takahashi, who bought up Hyatt and Regent hotels with $6 billion borrowed from the credit unions that were run by his friends. He was also president of a credit union which lent his own businesses over $1.26 billion. Takahashi died in 2005 a convicted felon.
In March 1992 Four Seasons Hotels Inc. paid $102 million for the Regent International Hotels group, providing the North American hotel operator an Asian foothold. Ownership of the under-construction Regent remained with Japan's Long-Term Credit Bank (LTCB).
LTCB, later renamed Shinsei, epitomized Japan’s banking problems. It is a story of greed, corruption and at time madness. LTCB was once the world’s 9th biggest bank. It collapsed in 1998 with $50 billion of bad loans.
The opening general manager was Wilfried N. Wagner.
According to the NY Times in August 1996 The Four Seasons Hotel was sold to a group of Hong Kong investors led by the Lai Sun Group (which also bought the Regent Beverly Wilshire in Beverly Hills, Calif., in February 1996). The seller was the Japanese bank LTCB. The sale price was estimated between $190

Sharp DR 90 Nemesis
From the National Air and Space Museum's Collection Databse:
Nemesis
The most successful aircraft in air racing history, Nemesis dominated its competition winning 45 of its 48 contests from 1991 until its retirement in 1999. Flown by pilot and designer Jon Sharp, it won nine consecutive Reno Gold National Championships and 16 world speed records for its class including the 3 km mark of 290.08 mph and the 15 km mark of 282.58 mph set in 1998. Nemesis was the International Formula One points champion for 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, and 1998, at an average speed 244.68 mph. In 1993, 1996, and 1998 it won the Louis Blčriot Medal of the FAI for the greatest achievement in speed. In 1993, 1994, 1995, and 1999, Nemesis won the Pulitzer Trophy for air racing speed records.
Nemesis is a small mid wing, single-seat tractor monoplane with fixed landing gear designed and built in 1991 by Jon Sharp, Cory Bird, Dan Bond, and Steve Ericson. The aircraft is built of pressure molded graphite epoxy foam core sandwich and is powered by a single Continental O-200, 100 horsepower air-cooled engine. Nemesis incorporated numerous firsts in the Formula 1 class. It was the first in history to be built entirely of tooled, pressure molded, carbon reinforced plastics; the first with a carbon fiber roll over structure; and the first to use a custom designed natural laminar flow wing. It is the first to be entirely computer lofted. Nemesis also pioneered the use of a side stick with a full ball bearing control system as well as an on board data acquisition system and a titanium firewall. It is the first racer with a center section containing the fuselage with an integral wing, landing gear, and wheel pants. These innovations earned the team the 1991 George Owl Trophy, awarded for design excellence.
With Jon Sharp at the controls, Nemesis won the first competition in which it was entered, the Gold Race at Reno, Nevada. It was the first aircraft since the inaugural 1947 Goodyear event to do so. Through 1996, Nemesis won an astonishing 30 consecutive races while setting two national qualifying records and Nemesis also set new world speed records for class C-la (Group 1) aircraft on a 3 kilometer course August 1993 at 277.26 mph and 283.75 mph three years later.
Formula One began as an idea in the late 1930s to find a relatively inexpensive but highly competitive form of air racing. Plans for such a race series began in earnest after the conclusion of World War II when the Professional Race Pilots Association drafted a proposal calling for a class of aircraft to be built around existing 190 cubic inch engines. With the approval of the National Aeronautic Association’s Contest Board the new racing series was born. In the summer of 1947, the Goodyear Aircraft Corporation agreed to sponsor three annual trophy competitions at the National Air Races. By the summer of 1947, 21 new diminutive pure racing aircraft were ready to compete. The racing was an immediate success as it proved highly competitive, inexpensive, and above all, safe. It has remained so to this day.
In 1968 the engine specification was increased to 200 cubic inches as the preferred Continental C-85 engine went out of production. The new powerplants were limited to 100 horsepower and thus Formula One was officially born. Little has changed in the rules since but improvements in design and materials have enabled these tiny aircraft – particularly Nemesis - to fly over 100 miles per hour faster than the first generation of midget racers.
Nemesis was retired in 1999 and donated to the National Air and Space Museum. It is on display at the Museum’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center at Washington Dulles International Airport.
Gift of Jon and Patricia Sharp
My Bike Long Ago
Found this photo I took of my bike about 4 and a half years ago, set up for road riding, squishy 2nd-year SID fork and all. Of all the parts on it, this is what I'm still using:
--Rolf Dolomite wheelset
--Specialized computer
--Titec Mag99 bar-ends (cut down shorter now)
--Avid Mag1 brakes
--Shimano XT aa-32 cassette (yeah, same one I'm pretty sure)
--Titec Ti 118 handlebar
--Control Tech Ti bolt-on skewers
--Race Face Turbine LP crankset
--Race Face Ti bottom bracket
--Shimano XTR front derailer
--Race Face 46T large chainring, 20T small
--Chris King headset
--Sram 9.0SL shifters
Not too bad as far as parts durability. Many of them are over a decade old and still working like new.
Stuff I've replaced:
--'99 Rock Shox SID SL fork (seized after 7 yrs)
--LP Composites seatpost (cracked after 7.5 yrs )
--Sram 9.0SL rear derailer (bad pulley, no replacements available, 7yrs)
--Control Tech stem (replaced w/ shorter stem)
--Specialized Alias seat (2yrs, then replaced due to pain; hated that thing)
--Chain, 32T gear (normal wear)
--'00 Fisher SuperCaliber frame (beginning to weaken after 8yrs)

Ivan Allen Sr.
Ivan Allen Sr. (1877-1968)
In 1900 while still in his mid-twenties, Ivan Allen cofounded the Atlanta office supply firm later known as the Ivan Allen Company. Through the "Forward Atlanta" campaign of the 1920s and many other activities, Allen became the city's quintessential booster. His son, Ivan Allen Jr., carried on this civic tradition as mayor of Atlanta in the 1960s.
From Dalton to Atlanta
Isaac Anderson Allen was born in Dalton on March 1, 1876, to Susan and Earnest Allen. His mother renamed him Ivan Earnest in honor of his father, a young Confederate veteran who died when Allen was only three. As a teenager, Allen began the study of law, but he soon met an Atlanta man who set him up to sell typewriters. After Allen sold a dozen machines in Dalton, he moved to Atlanta in 1895, the year of the Cotton States and International Exposition. Five years later, the formation of Fielder and Allen marked the beginning of the family business that would continue into the twenty-first century as Ivan Allen Workspace.
Originally located at 49 Peachtree Street, Fielder and Allen joined the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce in 1901. The firm sold office supplies and furniture in addition to typewriters. In 1920 the business relocated to the corner of Marietta and Forsyth streets, where it would remain for twenty-one years. Allen married seventeen-year-old Irene Beaumont in 1907. Their only child, Ivan Junior, was born in 1911.
Atlanta's Leading Booster
By 1913, when Allen became president of the new Atlanta Convention Bureau and a founding member of the Atlanta Rotary Club, Fielder and Allen was already claiming to be the largest office supply house in the South. A loyal Presbyterian, Allen supported the Boy Scouts and was a member of the Masons, Shriners, and Elks. He also helped raise funds to fight tuberculosis and start an art museum. The press mentioned his name as a candidate for mayor, but he declined to run for the office.
Allen's presidency of the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce was marked by the great fire of 1917. The fire destroyed fifty square blocks of the city, from Auburn Avenue to Ponce de Leon Avenue, and left more than 10,000 residents homeless. Only one person died in the fire. In addition to leading business recovery from the fire, Allen promoted World War I bond drives. Following World War I (1917-18), Allen won a seat in the Georgia senate representing Cobb, Clayton, and Fulton counties, and served one term.
In 1919 Allen and his longtime employee Charles Marshall bought out his partner James Fielder and formed the Ivan Allen-Marshall Company. Three years later Allen became a director of Trust Company of Georgia, Coca-Cola's bank. By 1925 Allen's company, which had about fifty employees, could celebrate its twenty-fifth anniversary as one of Atlanta's best-known businesses. Governor Lamartine G. Hardman chose Allen in 1926 to lead the Commission on Simplification and Coordination, which would shape later state government reorganization. The following year the Allens moved into a new home on Peachtree Road and were listed in the prestigious Social Cities Register. At this time Allen purchased the crest of Fort Mountain near Dalton. The property contained ancient fortifications of unknown origin. Allen considered developing a resort but instead donated the site to the state, which, with the help of the Civilian Conservation Corps, developed a state park (Fort Mountain State Park).
The chamber of commerce tapped Allen to head the "Forward Atlanta" booster campaign from 1926 to 1929. This venture, designed to solidify Atlanta's emerging position as the leading city of the South, placed advertisements in business publications across the country and touted Atlanta as the ideal location for new factories and for southern branch offices. Allen wrote the campaign's central document, Atlanta from the Ashes (1928). Twenty years later he wrote another booster booklet called The Atlanta Spirit: Altitude + Attitude (1948).
During the Great Depression, Allen turned even more of his attention to politics. He greatly admired U.S. president Franklin D. Roosevelt, whom he met on several occasions at Warm Springs. Allen was the treasurer of the Georgia Democratic Party in 1936, and he served as state chair for the president's campaign four years later. Roosevelt appointed him to the board of the regional Federal Home Loan Bank.
Allen brought his son into the firm upon his graduation from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1933. The family's fortune received a long-term boost in 1935, when Ernest Woodruff helped arrange for the cash-strapped Allen to purchase $25,000 of Coca-Cola stock. The following year Ivan Allen Jr. married Louise Richardson, granddaughter of the influential Atlanta businessman Hugh T. Inman, further entrenching the Allens among the city's elite.
During World War II (1941-45), Allen served the Roosevelt administration as sugar-rationing administrator and hel

Ikeahack: Car Seat + Ikea Bag + Cart = Stroller
I realized as we got out of the car yesterday, that I'd forgotten the adapters to put the car seat on the Bugaboo base.
With all the measuring and poking around I needed to do, I couldn't carry the kid "as is," and I didn't like the idea of schlepping the car seat through the Ikea maze.
So I loaded the car seat into a bag, and hung it with the short handles. it worked great. Though I was tempted, I didn't bring the yellow bag home.

Pronghorn antelope New Mexico
This herd of New Mexico pronghorn antelope seem surprised to see a tourist so early in the morning (first rays of morning light). After driving NM highway 72 in the dark and passing through the almost deserted town of Folsom, New Mexico - - they were a welcome greeting committee to me.
I found a great place to camp as I left Utah and entered Colorado. It was called the Lower Piedra River campground. It was a mile dirt road trip up the river off a two lane asphalt highway. Peace and tranquility under the pines, next to the river, and just a mile off the "beaten path".
My plans were to drive to Colorado's Great Sand Dune park, camp there and hike there in the evening and early in the morning.
I took my time making the drive over to the sand dunes. Stopped in Monte Vista, Colorado to read my Mind of the Raven book, while i did laundry (hoping I wouldn't screw up the job, and have to confess to my wife, why I now owned a pair of pink blue jeans).
Things changed at the Great Sand Dunes. A strong wind storm came up; there were more tourists than I could imagine; the campground was full early; and the only camping available required high clearance four wheel drive travel and I had O.D.'d on rough dirt road travel at Nine Mile Canyon in Utah.
So, I took some photos at the Great Sand Dunes and promptly bailed out. I chose a route that I had never traveled before (always a strong draw for me), called Cuchara Pass in S.E. Colorado.
The road started at La Veta, Colorado and ended up over at Trinidad, Colorado. I had plenty of daylight and the map showed LOTS (yeah right), of campgrounds along Cuchara Pass (Colorado highway 12)..
Well the drive was spectacular but campground were closed and I just didn't end up stopping. The campground at Trinidad (state park), was a joke in deplorable condition, so I drove well into the night to Raton, New Mexico. Here I found an "overflow" (their campground was full too) camp, at Sugarite. It was a cold windy night but I slept well.
With me predilection for visiting historic places and driving back road highways (especially those I have never before driven) - - I decided to head for Folsom, New Mexico. Why? Because in college I remember studying the Folsom points and Clovis points of ancient man in North America, so I wanted to see where they found some of these points.
Trouble is I woke up long before dawn and since "breaking camp" consisted of shifting from my bed in the back of the pickup truck to the driver's seat, that is what I did. I headed toward Folsom, New Mexico under the stars.
Nevada says their highway 50 is the "loneliest road in America". They are wrong. Highway 72 between Raton and Folsom, New Mexico is the loneliest road.
The only vehicle(s) I would see was like a segment out of the Twilight Zone. Three big rigs (cattle haulers), were parked on a high plateau, with their engines running, stopped in the highway, with all their tractor and trailer lights on. They were in the oncoming lane, and I thought I was coming upon a UFO, parked for the night in the outback of New Mexico.
Well folks (this story is almost done), I got into Folsom, New Mexico - - just before sunrise (it was pretty darned dark actually). Oh how I would have liked to of walked the streets and take photos in the early morning light, but God gave me no patience, so I hopped out of my pickup truck and took some eerie photos of the old abandoned (half in town fitted that description) buildings in Folsom.
What seemed even more surreal, is that there were several homes (no lights on) around the main street, and it must have been odd to see a pickup truck with Washington plates, parked in town, engine running, while some odd old guy with a camera, ran around town taking flash photos. Not one light came on. Not one dog barked.
Got to go see Folsom, New Mexico another day (and see what highway 72 looks like in the light of day). Dawn came and hundreds of pronghorn antelope stared at me as I drove toward Texas.

Push The Buttons
I miss Japanese toilets. They have heated toilet seats! It took some courage daring to press the different buttons, especially since I don't understand Japanese. The pictograms sort of speaks for themselves, though. So I took my time and was kind of experimenting with the buttons a bit and pressing the ones without pictogram...when suddenly there was hard knock on the door to the toilet. I got really nervous that I'd pressed some button that would call for someone to come or something, but on the outside stood a Japanese girl looking quite desperate to get to the bathroom. Stupid stupid stupid tourists...
