BABY DEVELOPMENT 9 WEEKS. ROCKSTAR BABY EVERYBODY WANTS YOU. BABY SPORTS THEME. Baby Development 9 Weeks
The Unofficial Guide to Having a Baby The inside scoop for when you want more than the official line Having a baby is one of life's most joyous-and overwhelming-events. The choices you make now will affect your baby's health long after it is born. How should you change your lifestyle now that you are pregnant? How can you be sure that your baby is developing properly? What should you expect at each doctor's visit? And how on earth will you survive labor? Now thoroughly updated with more than 200 pages of new and completely revised material, including week-by-week pregnancy tips, The Unofficial Guide?TM to Having a Baby gives savvy parents-to-be like you a foolproof appraisal of what works and what doesn't-revealing things even your doctor won't (or can't) tell you, with unbiased recommendations that are not influenced by any company, product, or organization. * Vital Information that other sources can't or won't reveal-including the very latest research on prenatal and genetic testing. * Insider Secrets on how to weather the physical and emotional highs and lows of pregnancy, with tips on health, exercise, sex, and career management. * Money-Saving Tips that help you save on baby gear and maternity wear. * The Latest Trends in new childbirth methods, including Doula care, pain management, and alternative birthing options. * Handy Checklists and Charts to track your baby's development, identify potentially dangerous medications and drugs, and record the milestones in your pregnancy. Like a good obstetrician, The Unofficial Guide to Having a Baby respects the intelligence of the mother-to-be. This mammoth tome is probably the best reference book on the market, giving nonjudgmental and fairly exhaustive information on such hot-button topics as whether to drink coffee during pregnancy and the relative safety of birth centers. The book lays out as much information as possible and leaves the decision-making to the parents--a surprisingly rare gambit in the bossy world of pregnancy books, which all too often insult the mom-to-be with sweeping dicta unsupported by hard science. Also like a good doctor, the book knows its limits, referring to other sources well and often. The book's tone can be impersonal, which seems natural considering that it was put together by two authors, a team of editors, and a panel of birth experts including a doctor, a nurse, and a nutritionist. For color commentary, 150 new parents were consulted, but their voices are not the book's strong point, offering such pallid advice as, "A good-quality stroller will see you through all your children, whereas a cheapie will cost you again and again." The book's "Unofficial" moniker seems to refer more to the guide's commitment to laying out all the alternatives than to an irreverent stance. (Those looking for in-the-trenches attitude and tried-and-true advice might turn instead to Vicki Iovine's superb The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy or Ariel Gore's The Hip Mama Survival Guide.) While the book's hesitance to pronounce on emotional topics is largely laudable, in some cases it backfires. In 818 pages, the authors devote just a few paragraphs to single-mother and lesbian pregnancies--though, to be fair, a resource directory is offered. Overall, though, this guide fills a much-needed information gap in the pregnancy book market. (11) Tilly Losch,” circa 1935, by Joseph Cornell, Construction, 10 x 9¤ x 2D inches Tilly Losch,” circa 1935, by Joseph Cornell, Construction, 10 x 9¤ x 2D inches ©The Joseph and Robert Cornell Memorial Foundation/Licensed by VAGA, New York City May 17, 2005 A Critic Takes On the Logic of Female Orgasm By DINITIA SMITH Evolutionary scientists have never had difficulty explaining the male orgasm, closely tied as it is to reproduction. But the Darwinian logic behind the female orgasm has remained elusive. Women can have sexual intercourse and even become pregnant - doing their part for the perpetuation of the species - without experiencing orgasm. So what is its evolutionary purpose? Over the last four decades, scientists have come up with a variety of theories, arguing, for example, that orgasm encourages women to have sex and, therefore, reproduce or that it leads women to favor stronger and healthier men, maximizing their offspring's chances of survival. But in a new book, Dr. Elisabeth A. Lloyd, a philosopher of science and professor of biology at Indiana University, takes on 20 leading theories and finds them wanting. The female orgasm, she argues in the book, "The Case of the Female Orgasm: Bias in the Science of Evolution," has no evolutionary function at all. Rather, Dr. Lloyd says the most convincing theory is one put forward in 1979 by Dr. Donald Symons, an anthropologist. That theory holds that female orgasms are simply artifacts - a byproduct of the parallel development of male and female embryos in the first eight or nine weeks of life. In that early period, the nerve and tissue pathways are laid down for various reflexes, including the orgasm, Dr. Lloyd said. As development progresses, male hormones saturate the embryo, and sexuality is defined. In boys, the penis develops, along with the potential to have orgasms and ejaculate, while "females get the nerve pathways for orgasm by initially having the same body plan." Nipples in men are similarly vestigial, Dr. Lloyd pointed out. While nipples in woman serve a purpose, male nipples appear to be simply left over from the initial stage of embryonic development. The female orgasm, she said, "is for fun." Dr. Lloyd said scientists had insisted on finding an evolutionary function for female orgasm in humans either because they were invested in believing that women's sexuality must exactly parallel that of men or because they were convinced that all traits had to be "adaptations," that is, serve an evolutionary function. Theories of female orgasm are significant, she added, because "men's expectations about women's normal sexuality, about how women should perform, are built around these notions." "And men are the ones who reflect back immediately to the woman whether or not she is adequate sexually," Dr. Lloyd continued. Central to her thesis is the fact that women do not routinely have orgasms during sexual intercourse. She analyzed 32 studies, conducted over 74 years, of the frequency of female orgasm during intercourse. When intercourse was "unassisted," that is not accompanied by stimulation of the clitoris, just a quarter of the women studied experienced orgasms often or very often during intercourse, she found. Five to 10 percent never had orgasms. Yet many of the women became pregnant. Dr. Lloyd's figures are lower than those of Dr. Alfred A. Kinsey, who in his 1953 book "Sexual Behavior in the Human Female" found that 39 to 47 percent of women reported that they always, or almost always, had orgasm during intercourse. But Kinsey, Dr. Lloyd said, included orgasms assisted by clitoral stimulation. Dr. Lloyd said there was no doubt in her mind that the clitoris was an evolutionary adaptation, selected to create excitement, leading to sexual intercourse and then reproduction. But, "without a link to fertility or reproduction," Dr. Lloyd said, "orgasm cannot be an adaptation." Not everyone agrees. For example, Dr. John Alcock, a professor of biology at Arizona State University, criticized an earlier version of Dr. Lloyd's thesis, discussed in in a 1987 article by Stephen Jay Gould in the magazine Natural History. In a phone interview, Dr. Alcock said that he had not read her new book, but that he still maintained the hypothesis that the fact that "orgasm doesn't occur every time a woman has intercourse is not evidence that it's not adaptive." "I'm flabbergasted by the notion that orgasm has to happen every time to be adaptive," he added. Dr. Alcock theorized that a woman might use orgasm "as an unconscious way to evaluate the quality of the male," his genetic fitness and, thus, how suitable he would be as a father for her offspring. "Under those circumstances, you wouldn't expect her to have it every time," Dr. Alcock said. Among the theories that Dr. Lloyd addresses in her book is one proposed World Breastfeeding Week 213/365 010810 When I was pregnant with Amelie I said I would give breastfeeding a go and if it worked it worked, and if it didn't I had at least tried. I didn't realise how passionate I would become about the subject and how determined to succeed I would be. Soon I'll have a new baby to feed, and I get to have that special relationship again, because there's no doubt in my mind that with the right support we'll succeed, however hard it may be. worldbreastfeedingweek.org/ *Join the World in Breastfeeding Action this year!* * Draw attention to the role of the Ten Steps in improving breastfeeding rates. * Renew action by health systems, health care providers and communities to make breastfeeding the easy choice for women. * Inform people everywhere of the risks of artificial feeding, and the role of breastfeeding for children’s development and lifelong health and the health of mothers. * Enable mothers to enjoy full support for breastfeeding in health care systems and beyond. WBW 2010 Rationale * Health care facilities play a vital role in the establishment of breastfeeding. * The Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding provide a supportive pathway enabling women to achieve their breastfeeding intentions and guiding the training of healthcare workers in breastfeeding support. * World Breastfeeding Week this year commemorates the 20th anniversary of the Innocenti Declaration that called for implementation of the Ten Steps in all maternity facilities. * During these 20 years, more than 20,000 maternities, or about 28% of all maternities in the world, have fully implemented the Ten Steps and have been certified by the Baby-friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI). * During this time, rates of exclusive breastfeeding have increased significantly. * However, reduced BFHI programming worldwide, inadequate training, and weakened compliance with the Ten Steps in accredited maternities are contributing to stagnant or declining exclusive breastfeeding rates in many settings. * It is time to revisit this approach and to determine where we must go from here. 10 Steps to Successful Breastfeeding 1. Have a written breastfeeding policy that is routinely communicated to all health care staff. 2. Train all health care staff in skills necessary to implement this policy. 3. Inform all pregnant women about the benefits and management of breastfeeding. 4. Help mothers initiate breastfeeding within a half-hour of birth. 5. Show mothers how to breastfeed and how to maintain lactation, even if they should be separated from their infants. 6. Give newborn infants no food or drink other than breast milk unless medically indicated. 7. Practice rooming- in - allow mothers and infants to remain together - 24 hours a day. 8. Encourage breastfeeding on demand. 9. Give no artificial teats or pacifiers (also called dummies or soothers) to breastfeeding infants. 10. Foster the establishment of breastfeeding support groups and refer mothers to them on discharge from the hospital or clinic. Baby Weight At 24 Weeks. Absolutely Free Baby Stuff. Turtle Baby Shower Cakes. Baby Weight At 24 Weeks
Introducing Galen I went in for my 39 week appointment on Tuesday, August 2nd. I asked my doctor to strip my membranes in an attempt to go into labor on my own, otherwise it was the plan that I would be induced by membraned rupture sometime over the weekend. My membranes were stipped around 9:45 am. Roxy, David and I were all a little hungry and we went home and had an early lunch. I had been feeling a little crampy since the stripping, but I was expecting that. Around 11:45-noon I was noticing that my cramps were getting stronger and more regular and felt a little different from menturation cramping since they felt like they were pulling from the top of my stomach. David started timing them and his mom took Roxy to run errands and watch movies at her house. They brought back snacks for David and I. I thought I shouldn't eat anything since I wasn't really that hungry, but I had some chips and quac anyways. At this point I wasn't convinced that I was actually in labor, it just felt like it was too good to be true since membrane stipping hadn't worked at all in my last pregnancy. I tried showering, eating, drinking, standing, sitting, and lying down. No matter what I did the contractions were regular and picking up in intensity. At one point they had doubled my over the side of my bed. David washed and gloved up and checked my cervix for me and determined that I was at 5cm, 2 more cm than what I had been at that morning at the doctor's office. At this point I had been laboring at home for almost 5 hours and we decided that I should go to labor and delivery. We get to the hospital at around 4:45 and I'm checked and I am indeed 5 cm so they admit me. I told the nurses of my plan for a non-medicated, minimal intervetion labor and birth. Everyone is on board and many of my wants are hospital policy, which was very comforting. I was able to labor in a tub for about an hour before contractions started feeling like they were putting pressure on my bottom. I get out and find that I've dialated to a 7 in less than 2 hours. Things are going really fast! The intensity of the contractions is getting worse and worse and when I'm told I'm at an 8 I ask David to call his parent's to get Roxy to the hospital. I think it was probably about 8:30 pm or so when the contactions are only 2-3 minutes apart and so intense that I feel like I'm having an out of body experience everytime one hits me. I literally felt like I was going insane. At one point my mom asks David if I'm having back labor, he didn't think I was. I was one of those women that could be heard from the otherside of town, I was screaming and yelling through the contractions. Roxy was taken from the room at some point, maybe when I had been begging for the epidural. I had been stalled out at about 8-8.5cm for nearly 3 hours and the pain was unbarable, especially when they had broken my water. I had my epidural shortly after 9pm and once I was relaxed my body was able to work efficietnly and I was having contractions less than 1 minute apart. I felt so much relief after my epidural, I felt pressure and touch and was able to move my legs, but no more pain! I was checked shortly after the epi and I had indeed been having back labor, Galen was sunnyside up! The Dr. said I was ready to push and with just 10 minutes of pushing and 40 minutes after recieving my epi, Galen David Robinson came into the world at 9:59pm! By the Dr.'s description is was a beautiful delivery and it was! He kinda spun himself around with each push until he came our face down, like he was meant to. He was placed directly onto my chest, where he remained for the first 1.5 of his life. David cut his cord, which by the way, had a true umbilical knot (pretty rare from what the dr. said and he was the second baby of the night to have one in that hospital!). After he was removed from my chest he was weighted. He's a big boy! 8 pounds 12 ounces and 21 inches long! His head is 14 inches around and I didn't tear! He's almost exatcly 2 lbs bigger and 2 inches longer than his sister was at birth! We refused all vaccinations at birth, including the eye goop and vitamin K. He passed all his tests with flying colors and despite not getting vitamin K, didn't bleed out when getting his heel stick, lol! We got to leave less than 24 hours after delivery which is awesome! Although I didn't end up going completely natural, I am so happy with how my son's birth went. I only had the epidural for 40 minutes of my 10 hour labor and I'm so proud of myself for lasting as long as I did! . 16 weeks, 24 more to go! :) I was a day late and it was Christmas eve.. it was perfect.. the lights in the house, the decorations, the food, craving for salmon.. I realised, could it be? :) I am never late.. then I thought maybe it's nothing.. let's toast to Christmas and family.. we had our champange, ate our salmon salad as starters :) and then the wine.. why did the wine taste so weird.. I love red wine.. then I thought, perhaps it's the French wine, different than the usual we drink.. I couldn't help but think, what if? :) we were not aiming.. we thought it's okay to have it.. but now? :) I didn't finish the wine.. whispered at Alex's ear, I might be.. he was calm.. he said, enjoy the christmas party, because what if not? right? and then the usual coffee drinking with brandy.. I thought I'll definitely skip that one.. making up a reason that coffee would keep me awake. in fact that coffee with that amount of brandy wouldn't keep anyone awake :) next day, more cravings for salmon.. again strange taste of wine, a different type this time.. no, there's definitely something different this time.. Alex and I didn't talk about it for a couple of days, but we had this meaningful exchange of smiles every now and then or squeezing hands under the blanket.. we both knew what it referred to.. a week later, after eating more smoked salmon.. I bought the test.. I bought the cheapest one.. the least attractive.. because what if not.. I didn't want to get my hopes high.. Alex arrived home. I said, shall we? he said ok.. it said wait five minutes for an accurate result. it was clear within 20 seconds.. two strips.. could it be any faster? :)) we hugged, we were nervous, in a nice sort of way :) Dropje was staring at us the whole time, I called her, patted her and said, in 9 months you're going to have a friend who is almost the same size as you and the same weight as you, but hopefully less hairy :) she knew something was different between me and Alex, we grabbed her and altogether celebrated the news of the little one. Gallop!: A Scanimation Picture Book (Scanimation Books) There's never before been a book like Gallop! Employing a patented new technology called Scanimation, each page is a marvel that brings animals, along with one shining star, to life with art that literally moves. It's impossible not to flip the page, and flip it again, and again, and again. A first book of motion for kids, it shows a horse in full gallop and a turtle swimming up the page. A dog runs, a cat springs, an eagle soars, and a butterfly flutters. Created by Rufus Butler Seder, an inventor, artist, and filmmaker fascinated by antique optical toys, Scanimation is a state-of-the-art six-phase animation process that combines the "persistence of vision" principle with a striped acetate overlay to give the illusion of movement. It harkens back to the old magical days of the kinetoscope, and the effect is astonishing, like a Muybridge photo series springing into action—or, in terms kids can relate to, like a video without a screen. Complementing the art is a delightful rhyming text full of simple questions and fun, nonsense replies: Can you gallop like a horse? giddyup-a-loo! Can you strut like a rooster? cock-a-doodle-doo! Every child who opens the book will be amazed—and so will every parent. (13) Item Collaboration?10/31?WATER Day 10 of Item Collaboration is also the day I turn 29. Not the best day of 2011 let's say. Ha. -_-" Maybe I should pay attention. I learned something about shooting kids today! (Wow, that is NOT a good sentence.) Anyway, some kids get pressured and nervous with a big SLR in their face. A fast zoom from further away would have been preferred. But all I had was the 35mm prime, so that was out. Better technique? Prefocus on the kids eyes, take your eye away from the camera, and...wait! If you're not looking through the camera, the kid forgets about you. Which is good! Then they're free to play and interact, and all you have to do is anticipate and push the shutter release! Of course, that may present some cropping fails, like in the comments, but sometimes those can turn out well too! Game-Based Marketing: Inspire Customer Loyalty Through Rewards, Challenges, and Contests Harness the power of games to create extraordinary customer engagement with Game-Based Marketing. Gamification is revolutionizing the web and mobile apps. Innovative startups like Foursquare and Swoopo, growth companies like Gilt and Groupon and established brands like United Airlines and Nike all agree: the most powerful way to create and engage a vibrant community is with game mechanics. By leveraging points, levels, badges, challenges, rewards and leaderboards – these innovators are dramatically lowering their customer acquisition costs, increasing engagement and building sustainable, viral communities. Game-Based Marketing unlocks the design secrets of mega-successful games like Zynga’s Farmville, World of Warcraft, Bejeweled and Project Runway to give you the power to create winning game-like experiences on your site/apps. Avoid obvious pitfalls and learn from the masters with key insights, such as: Why good leaderboards shouldn’t feature the Top 10 players. Most games are played as an excuse to socialize, not to achieve. Status is worth 10x more than cash to most consumers. Badges are not enough: but they are important. You don’t need to offer real-world prizing to run a blockbuster sweepstakes. And learn even more: How to architect a point system that works Designing the funware loop: the basics of points, badges, levels, leaderboards and challenges Maximizing the value and impact of badges Future-proofing your design Challenging users without distraction Based on the groundbreaking work of game expert and successful entrepreneur Gabe Zichermann, Game-Based Marketing brings together the game mechanics expertise of a decade’s worth of research. Driven equally by big companies, startups, 40-year-old men and tween girls, the world is becoming increasingly more fun. Are you ready to play? Advertising is dead. You may not realize it, but you and everyone you know engages, possibly unsuspectingly, in some form of a game multitasking as an ingenious marketing device. Game-Based Marketing illustrates the pervasiveness of games today in business marketing, and how to better use them to create an engaged and loyal customer base. Game-Based Marketing will: Explain the growing phenomenon of game-based marketing and how it works Show marketers how to develop games to incorporate into their marketing strategy Share fascinating examples of marketing games already in play including Jigsaw.com; Chase Picks Up The Tab; the iconic McDonald’s Monopoly Game that reportedly generates nearly one-hundred million dollars in incremental revenue per year; and United Airlines Mileage Plus where team pint competitions and real-world scavenger hunts for miles accrue millions annually. Provocative and instructive, Game-Based Marketing’s message is clear: Use the tools in this book to put games in your marketing mix now… or you’ll be out of the game altogether. Top 5 Ways to Gameify Your Business From Foursquare on the iPhone to an online game of Farmville, not to mention the frequent fliers popularized in the Academy Award nominated film, Up in the Air, playing "everyday games" has become nothing short of a pop culture obsession. Driving unprecedented consumer engagement to smart brands like Chase and the US Army, loyalty programs and marketing games are marketing’s best bet for the future of advertising. It’s easier than you think to bring the power of games to your business. Using the breakthrough lessons in Game-Based Marketing, you can start adding game mechanics to your marketing mix in 5 easy steps: 1. What consumer behavior are you trying to drive? Don’t just think about broad or bottom line objectives (“more engagement”, “greater brand exposure”) when considering ways in which you’d like to effect the behavior of your consumer base, but instead, focus in on easy-to-achieve activities that will have an overall impact on your bottom line. For example: incentivize the sending of product endorsements to friends. The more specific you can be, the easier it is to build game mechanics around. Some behaviors are best left un-incentivized, however, a topic we cover closely in Chapters 1 & 2. 2. Assign points to those behaviors. Think about how much value each of the behaviors has to your business and assign points to each action accordingly. Points should be weighed relatively, so if opening a new account is ten times more valuable than clicking on an advertiser’s link, make sure the point system reflects that reality. Want to learn more about just how point systems function? Check out Chapters 3 & 4. 3. Create a leaderboard to display points. Just like the Employee of the Month plaques at restaurants, create a socially-networked leaderboard that allows users to feel like they are accomplishing something relative to their friends and peers—A little encouragement goes a long way. You’ll find a plethora of leaderboard dos & don’ts in Chapter 4. 4. Develop challenges and message them. Just like Frequent Flyer promotions, creating simple challenges can have a profound effect on user behavior once they are connected to your community. Keep your challenges fresh and topical by knowing your players – Chapter 7 gives you riveting insight on exactly who is playing. 5. Make “fun” your goal! Whether your business is finance or funerary, making fun a principal objective will substantially increase consumer engagement and generate remarkable new revenue opportunities. Chapter 8 shows you the future and how Generation G – today’s tweens – are driving ‘funnovation’ in every industry. There are plenty more tips in store – from why cash, or even real-world prizes just don’t matter as much as you think, to how you can compete against well-funded incumbents without much capital. Buy Game-Based Marketing today and learn the key secrets of leading-edge marketers - and how you can harness the power of games in your mix to create, engage, and excite your customers. There may be no denying China's growing economic strength, but its impact on the global balance of power remains hotly contested. Political scientist Aaron L. He explains how the United States and China define their goals and reveals the strategies each is now employing to achieve its ends. Friedberg demonstrates in this provocative book that the ultimate aim of Chinese policymakers is to "win without fighting," displacing the United States as the leading power in Asia while avoiding direct confrontation. The United States, on the other hand, sends misleading signals about our commitments and resolve, putting us at risk for a war that might otherwise have been avoided. A much-needed wake-up call to U.S. leaders and policymakers, A Contest for Supremacy is a compelling interpretation of a rivalry that will go far to determine the shape of the twenty-first century. It makes for a wonderful crunch and freshness with the rich creaminess of the hummus. The hummus is homemade, my first attempt at making it. I took two different recipes I found and combined bits of each of them to come up with my own. The only thing I would do differently next time is I would probably blend it for longer to make it really smooth. Recipe for Black Bean and Chickpea (Garbanzo Bean) Hummus 1 can chickpeas (garbanzo beans,) drained and rinsed 1 can black beans, drained and rinsed 1 1/2 Tbs. tahini (sesame paste) 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil 1/4 cup water 1 tsp. toasted sesame oil 1 1/2 tsp. kosher salt 15 grinds of black pepper 1 tsp. allspice 2 cloves of garlic (fairly large cloves) 2 1/2 Tbs. flat leaf parsley, roughly chopped (no stems) juice from 1/2 a lemon juice from 1 lime Put all the ingredients in the food processor, and mix until smooth. A blender would work as well, it will just take a bit longer, and you'll have to stir the ingredients a bit to get it all blended properly. homemade baby food organic carrots, peas and corn i fantasized briefly about quitting my job and becoming self employed making local organic baby food... any takers? homemade carrot baby food Making your own fresh, homemade baby food is economical and healthier for your baby. IN ISLAM IT'S ALL ABOUT CHOOSING THE BEST BUTCHER March 14, 2011 Selection Sunday for Savages By Richard Baehr The Palestinian Authority on Sunday named a new town square. "Palestinians from President Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah faction named a town square on Sunday after the leader of a 1978 bus hijacking in which 35 Israelis were killed." "Many Palestinians see Dalal al-Mughrabi, a member of the then-underground Fatah movement, as a heroine for her role in hijacking the bus on Israel's Haifa-Tel Aviv highway. "We stand here in praise of our martyrs and in loyalty to all of the martyrs of the national movement," Fatah member Sabri Seidam said at the unveiling of a plaque showing Mughrabi cradling a rifle against a backdrop map of Israel, the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The square was festooned with Palestinian flags. The Palestinian Authority conducted the naming ceremony two days after five Israelis were stabbed to death in their home in Itamar, the victims including an infant and a four year old. This raised the question of whether the perpetrator or perpetrators of these murders will be deserving of a town square named for their "heroic acts" at some future date. Since there is no Joe Lunardi of bracketology.com to offer any advice on which Palestinian murderers will get a town square named for them or other naming glory, I have attempted to recreate the calculus that the PA seems to use in making these important decisions. 1. How many Jews did you kill? This seems to be a key criterion. Only five Jews were murdered in Itamar, and the killers carelessly missed two more children who were in the home. Earlier in the evening, many more young people were in the Fogel home, but left with the 12 year old daughter who eventually discovered the killers' handiwork later that night. The Itamar killers could have added to their "body of work" by better timing of their attack. It seems likely that the suicide bomber who murdered 30 mainly old Holocaust survivors at a Passover seder in Netanya or the suicide bomber who killed 21 teenagers at the Dolphinarium disco in Tel Aviv are among several Palestinian "freedom fighters" who will earn serious consideration for new town squares, well ahead of the Itamar killers. 2. How many young Jews did you kill? Murdering Jewish babies and young Jews seems to help in getting the selection committee's recognition. Murder of the young has the multiplier effect wherein the committee looks at the total number of years of Jewish life eliminated. Killing a 4 year old Jewish girl counts for 78 years, a 4 year old Jewish boy for 75. The Itamar killer or killers may have impressed "the Committee" by murdering three young people, and two young adults. The total number of years of Jewish life eliminated may exceed that of several suicide bombers with much higher total Jewish death counts. 3. How vicious were the murders? The Itamar murderer or murderers scored high in this category. Not just any ordinary killer can slit the throat of an infant, or stab a 4 year old in the heart. The Committee is certain to consider this "strength of settler" factor in its decision, though the higher score here goes if those murdered were more defenseless. In the past the Committee has favored those who killed sleeping children to awake ones. 4. How big a deal were the murders to the mainstream media? Did the murders get to the front page of the New York Times, or rate a background story on NPR, or the BBC on how the killers had no choice, given Israeli settlement activity, but to force the world's attention to the crimes of the infant and toddler settler and their brutal occupation? The Itamar murderer did very poorly here. The New York Times' initial story by Isabel Kershner was not on the front page and only mentioned settler or settlement 8 times including in the title. CNN used quotes around the words "terrorist attack" and the Times headline indicates that Israelis "suspected Palestinians" of committing the attack. Of course, it could also have been a robbery gone wrong (the 4 year old refused to turn over his teddy bear), or perhaps there was a dispute among neighbors. But in any case, the story was dwarfed by coverage of the earthquake in Japan. This too reflects badly on the killers -- why could they not have waited a week or two until the Japan story faded? The Munich Olympics killers only killed 11 Israelis, but the story of this carnage was seen on television in real time for nearly 24 hours by billions. I think the big media coverage enabled these mass murderers to earn the Committee's attention, and earn a high seed for future town squares. 5. Did the killings bring joy to the hearts of Palestinians? After news of the Itamar slaughter occurred, people took to the streets in Gaza to celebrate, passing out sweets for the sweet news. However, there have not yet been competing claims of responsibility for t koala bear - lone pine santuary Koalas vary in size and colour depending on where they live in Australia. Koalas found in the southern distributions (Southern NSW and Victoria) tend to be slightly larger and darker than those in the northern areas (Northern NSW and QLD). This is likely to be related to the different temperatures and is a feature exhibited by many species whose distribution encompasses large climatic variations. The most notable physical aspect of the Koala would have to be its big fluffy ears. Koalas have a great sense of hearing and an even better sense of smell. This is how they select which leaves are the best to eat. Their eyesight is not too good, and therefore detection of predators is generally by sound. They possess very strong forearms and extremely long, sharp claws for climbing. Habitat Koalas are found in eucalypt forests around the Eastern and South Eastern coast of Australia. The majority of wild Koalas are found on private property thus meaning there is no formal protection of this habitat. It is not known why some areas are absent of Koalas despite the presence of a food source, but it is possible that historically hunting has driven local populations to extinction. Diet Koalas eat eucalypt leaves but only from certain species. There are over 700 Eucalyptus species occurring within Australia, however the Koala will eat leaves from less than 50 of these species. Out of the palatable varieties, less than one dozen are staples. They prefer the 'tip' of the leaves, which is the juiciest and softest part of the leaf and eat around 500g of tip per day. Of course wild Koalas have to depend on whatever leaf is available and during the cooler months will often be forced to eat the more mature leaves. Breeding When a female Koala is ready to breed she will call out to a male by letting out a loud snorting bellow. The female gives birth 35 days after mating. When born, the baby weighs only half a gram and is the size of a kidney bean at about 2cm long. It stays attached to its mothers teat for 13 weeks, its eyes are open at 22 weeks and it gains teeth at 24 weeks. At around the 7 month age bracket, the baby will start taking short spells climbing on its mother's back and is usually independent at about 12 months old. Greek Labrys - "double ax". The layout of the complex seemed so complicated that the word Labyrinth eventually came to mean "maze" and became part of the Minotaur legend. The palace is supposedly designed by Daidalos (Daedalus) at Minos' request, to confine the Minotaur, a monster with a man's body and a bull's head. Minos used to feed his enemies to the Minotaur, and every nine years the Athenians (conquered by him) had to deliver a human sacrifice of 7 youths and 7 maidens. It was part of the tribute that Theseus arrived from Athens and seduced Ariadne, the king's daughter. She gave him a thread which he unwound as he entered the Labyrinth and thus he was able to find his way out after killing the Minotaur. More later ... zombie killing robot I didn't think that I would dislike a program as much as i do illustrator. Mostly because i'm completely new to it and it was very difficult to get the results I wanted. Our first assignment was supposed to be fairly simple, to make a robot that does a task from a list the professor gave. It was difficult because we could only use the pathfinder tool, along with the simple shapes and barely any paint brush work. I went with zombie killing, because the others were more difficult and required more creativity. Mine will attack pirate zombies, I still have to make a background that's not going to be fun. I"m not sure if i'm done with the dragon robot yet. Whether your tastes run to the more traditional (nine-patch, star, basket, or pineapple variations, among many others) or the more experimental (appliqued orchids, cacti, or heraldic designs, for example), you're likely to find something of interest here. (5) Vintage Baby Quilt Pattern with Hunky Dory Fabric by Moda This was made using the "Vintage Baby Quilt" pattern. I left more of the white around the edges of the quilt, to serve as a small "border." I also did a simple pieced backing. The fun thing about this pattern is that there's no piecing on the front. Instead, you sew the 2.5" squares (quartered charms) through all layers of the quilt sandwich. I used 1/2" wide tape to create a grid on the white background fabric, then lined my squares up with that. (I actually only taped every other space, rather than each one.) The tape left a bit of reside here and there, which I was able to rub off with my fingers. However, I would suggest removing the tape promptly, once the squares have been layed out and pinned securely in place (through all layers). I also highly suggest using spray basting to hold the quilt sandwich together (not the squares). Finished measurements are 40" x 40". Uses (169) 2.5" squares, so you can get away with using one 42-pc charm pack, plus one more 2.5" square. A jelly roll will work too; it's a lot more fabric than you need, but you could use some of the strips for a scrappy binding and/or on the back of the quilt. This is my first upload to Flicker, but I've made quite a few other quilts. Most of my pics are on another photo-sharing site, but since I sometimes browse Flicker for inspiration, I thought maybe I'd share some of my own creations here. Live Birth Of Human Baby - Activity Mat For Baby - A Baby Pool Live Birth Of Human Baby
NOVA - The Miracle of Life Each minute, all over the world, a baby is born. An everyday occurrence, yet each birth is the culmination of one of nature's most complex, mysterious, and seemingly miraculous processes. A dramatic breakthrough in science and cinematography, the Peabody® award-winning The Miracle of Life takes you on an incredible voyage through the human body as a new life begins. World-renowned Swedish photographer Lennart Nilsson presents a spectacular look at a microscopic world Still startlingly beautiful after several years, Nova's The Miracle of Life records human conception for the first time on film, and much more. Living, functioning reproductive systems are laid bare to the camera, and there is so much to explore and absorb that Nova's expert guidance is much needed and appreciated. The viewer follows an egg from its follicular development in an ovary, through the delicate, flowery fallopian tube for fertilization, and on to the uterus for development and eventual birth. Likewise, we follow the shorter journey of millions of sperm as they develop and strive mightily to reach the egg. (There isn't a man alive who can watch intraurethral footage without squirming--see for yourself!) Photographer Lennart Nilsson has shown us something profoundly beautiful and yet has left its fundamental mystery intact. The Miracle of Life is a rarity: a documentary that is also art. --Rob Lightner (13) Cabinet photo of Lillian Russell Lillian Russell From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia For the biographical film, see Lillian Russell (film). Lillian Russell Lillian Russell, 1897 BornHelen Louise Leonard December 4, 1861 Clinton, Iowa, U.S. DiedJune 6, 1922 (aged 60) Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, U.S. OccupationActress/Singer Years active1879–1919 Lillian Russell (December 4, 1861 – June 6, 1922) was an American actress and singer. She became one of the most famous actresses and singers of the late 19th century and early 20th century, known for her beauty and style, as well as for her voice and stage presence. Russell was born in Iowa but raised in Chicago. Her parents separated when she was eighteen, and she moved to New York with her mother. She quickly began to perform professionally, singing for Tony Pastor and playing roles in comic opera, including Gilbert and Sullivan works. She married composer Edward Solomon in 1884 and created roles in several of his operas in London, but in 1886 he was arrested for bigamy. Russell was married four times, but her longest relationship was with Diamond Jim Brady, who supported her extravagant lifestyle for four decades. In 1885, Russell returned to New York and continued to star in operetta and musical theatre. For many years, she was the foremost singer of operettas in America, performing continuously through the end of the nineteenth century. In 1899, she joined the Weber and Fields's Music Hall, where she starred for five years. After 1904, she began to have vocal difficulties and switched to dramatic roles. She later returned to musical roles in vaudeville, however, finally retiring from performing around 1919. In later years, Russell wrote a newspaper column, advocated women's suffrage and was a popular lecturer. Her father was newspaper publisher Charles E. Leonard, and her mother was the feminist Cynthia Leonard, the first woman to run for mayor of New York City. Her family moved to Chicago by 1865, where she attended the Convent of the Sacred Heart (from age 7 to 15) and the Park Institute. Her father became a partner in the printing firm of Knight & Leonard, and her mother became active in the women's rights movement. Russell, called "Nellie" as a child, excelled at school theatricals. In her teens, she studied music privately and sang in choirs. In December 1877, she performed in an amateur production of Time Tries All at Chickering Hall in Chicago.[1] [edit]Early career When Russell was eighteen, her parents separated, and she and her mother moved to New York City. She soon became engaged to Walter Sinn, but broke off the engagement when she immediately found some success in the chorus of the Brooklyn Park Theatre.[1] She studied singing under Leopold Damrosch. In November 1879, she made her first appearance on Broadway at Tony Pastor's Casino Theater, billed as "an English Ballad Singer." Pastor, known as the father of vaudeville, was responsible for introducing many well-known performers.[2] in Patience, 1882 She joined the chorus of a touring production of Gilbert and Sullivan's comic opera H.M.S. Pinafore in 1879 and two weeks later married the orchestra leader Harry Braham after she found she was pregnant. She gave birth to a son, also named Harry, but the baby died after being stuck with a diaper pin by his nanny; the pin penetrated his stomach.[3] In 1881, she played the leading soprano role of Mabel in a burlesque of The Pirates of Penzance at Pastor's theatre. She next played at the Bijou Theatre on Broadway as Djenna in The Great Mogul and with the McCaull Opera Company played Bathilda in Olivette.[1] She also played the title role in Gilbert and Sullivan's Patience and Aline in The Sorcerer. Returning to Pastor's Casino Theatre in 1883, she played Phoebe in Billee Taylor, composed by Edward Solomon, who was serving as music director for Pastor. Russell married Solomon in 1884, a year after their daughter, Dorothy Lillian Russell,[4] was born and travelled with him to England. There, she first played Virginia at the Gaiety Theatre in Solomon and Stephens's Paul and Virginia, followed by the title characters in Solomon's Polly and Grundy and Solomon's Pocahontas. While in London, she was engaged to create the title role of Gilbert and Sullivan's Princess Ida, but she clashed with W. S. Gilbert and was dismissed during rehearsals.[5] She then returned to America, touring for Pastor in Solomon's comic operas and playing in New York theatres or on tour in Gilbert and Sullivan and in operettas.[1] In 1886, Solomon was arrested for bigamy, since his previous marriage had not been dissolved. Russell obtained a divorce from Solomon in 1893.[6] During these years, Russell continued to star in comic operas and other musical theatre. In 1887, she starred as baby comming [18:03] Andrei Vendetta: He looks to stephan. "If lady no alright and no stand..." He moves to fall from his chair and give it a shove down the stairs towards them. "Use chair, get to place with bandaids and make her no leak no more." [18:04] Stephan Frontenac turns around hearing Andrei, touched by his kindness. He pulls out a bunch of bill (that someday someone will rob him for carrying all the time and places them in Drei's hand "Thank you, I owe you a favor, a big favor." [18:05] Fugazi Smalls: "That leak, is the protective sac of water her baby was suspended in dear, she'd going to soon be pushing a very large bundle of flesh out of what, at the moment, is a very small hole" she'd keep her smirk to herself this time, not wanting to confuse Andrei [18:05] Kay pushes the door to the church open and stalks inside, her eyes darting over each person withen, not here about medical, but rather curisoity [18:07] Fugazi Smalls: "...which I suspect will be very very very painful" she'd finish [18:10] beth Latynina just begins to pant as another wave of pain hits to belly glaring over to Fu as now just screams in a low whimper as whole body tenses up," the baby is comming Stephan.." as sucking in an breath then when that wave passes head falling forward as eyes close [18:11] Andrei Vendetta: He glances down at the credits, stuffing it into his pocket, not knowing what else to do with them. He shrugs slowly. "Get lady to Doctor place... Make her no leak." [18:12] Eamon Cale is Online [18:13] Stephan Frontenac helping Beth into the wheel chair he thinks about her statement, and thinks about her last scream "Just relax Beth, it's coming but not this second." At least he hopes so, he's seen too many suprise delivering in the years in the lab to be certain. [18:13] Stephan Frontenac: (( sorry, forgot I had not pressed enter)) [18:13] Kay blinks her translucent eyelids and speaks up to ask "Thissss isss human sssacrafice?" [18:14] Fugazi Smalls: "Actually, she's about to give birth. Probably sometime over the next twelve to one hundred twenty hours or so" [18:15] Wearable Wheelchair (L-frame) 3.0: Click me to adjust height. [18:16] Stephan Frontenac looks at the apparent lizard hybrid when he hears about human sacrifice and frowns that he doesn't have his tazer. Eamon would get mad at him shooting someone in the church. He yells, letting his frustration about everything out on Kay "Give birth you ugly fuck of a thing. Go hide under a rock before someone steps on you!" [18:18] Lisandra Ruby opens the door of the church and walks tentatively toward the group of people asking "did someone need medical attention?" [18:18] beth Latynina feels as Stephan helps set her in the wheelchair panting when another spams tenses ripping along her belly," tell her to shut up.." pointing to Fu as beads of sweat clinging to face. Moans panting even harder as did not know it would hurt like this. [18:19] Alexion Ivercourt followed Lis in, still drawn to her sway whenever he walked behind her, his eyes taking in the scene [18:20] Alexion Ivercourt paled.... that woman looke pregnant. He hopes this wasn't one of "those" call-outs! [18:20] Kay narrows her eyes at the male and hisses "I do not live under rocksss....and sssuch a messsy thing for humansss..." [18:21] Stephan Frontenac seeing no one is attacking him and no emergency staff are coming, he decides to wheel Beth to the MCMC. Despite his rish and panic, after taking two steps, he turns and bows slightly to Fu in farewell and hurries towards the doors. [ [18:27] beth Latynina lucky for Stephan she does not see that bow as she is to busy at the moment endoring intense pain having his daughter. Screaming in pain once more as breath comes in short blowing pants just snap out at Stephan," don't even think about touching me for an long time buster.." groaning then spasms with another pain [18:27] Andrei Vendetta: He furrows his brow at the people gathering then glances over to Fu. "If gonna be really painful. Andrei glad no put woman through such to make Andrei. " He glances over to Beth. Sympathetically taking one of his painkiller numbed legs and crossing it over the other. "if hole small as piss hole... That gonna REALLY hurt." He then swallows coming to a realization. "She no gonna die.... is she?" [18:28] Kay: /mew shrugs, losing intrest and heads off for RL rest [18:28] Fugazi Smalls: "No dear, if it becomes too difficult for her they'll simply cut the baby out of her belly and give her a nice big scar to blame the child for the rest of it's life" [18:28] Stephan Frontenac rushes out not bothering to answer anyone, thinking if he could not touch Beth fine, it would give him moral justification to touch everyone and everything else. live birth of human baby WallMonkeys wall graphics are printed on the highest quality re-positionable, self-adhesive fabric paper.
