Alpenmarmot Alpenmurmeltier

De alpenmarmot heeft een compact gebouwd lichaam, een grote kop en korte poten. De voorpoten hebben vier tenen en de achterpoten vijf. De kleine oren zijn vrijwel geheel in de huid verborgen. Zijn huid bestaat uit een zeer dikke vetlaag die hij gebruikt als voedselreserve bij de winterslaap. De dikke, zachte vacht houdt het dier dan warm. Ook de staart is dichtbehaard. De kleur van de vacht varieert van grijs tot geelachtig bruin. Aan het begin van de zomer, in juni en juli, soms in augustus, is de marmot in de rui.
Een volwassen alpenmarmot is tussen de 47 en 57 centimeter lang. De staart is nog eens een 15 tot 20 centimeter lang. Zijn gewicht varieert door het jaar maar in september, wanneer hij het zwaarst is, kan hij tussen de 4,3 en 6 kilogram wegen. In de lente wegen ze ongeveer drie kilogram. Mannetjes wegen meer dan vrouwtjes.

Gedrag.
De alpenmarmot voedt zich met grassen, kruiden en zeggen. Soms eet hij ook bloemen, onrijpe vruchten en wortels. Het is een dagdier, die in de regel de gehele dag door actief is. Op zeer warme dagen komt hij echter alleen 's ochtends en 's avonds tevoorschijn.
Alpenmarmotten leven in een familiegroep in een diep, uitgebreid gangenstelsel. Een groep bestaat uit twee tot twintig dieren, bestaande uit een dominant paartje en hun nakomelingen uit verscheidene jaren. Ook zijn er zwervers, die geen vast woongebied hebben.
Bij gevaar laten ze een korte, scherpe, fluitende alarmroep horen, waarna alle marmotten het gangenstelsel invluchten. De nestkamer, waarin de dieren slapen, ligt zeer diep, en is bekleed met gras. De ingang van de nestkamer wordt afgesloten tijdens de winterslaap, die duurt van oktober tot april. Meerdere dieren liggen bij elkaar tijdens de winterslaap. Tijdens de winterslaap kan de lichaamstemperatuur dalen tot een temperatuur van 5°C.
De paartijd valt in april en mei. Twee tot zes jongen worden na een draagtijd van 34 dagen in mei en juni geboren. Ze worden veertig dagen lang gezoogd. De dieren zijn na de tweede winterslaap geslachtsrijp, maar zullen zich pas in de derde zomer voortplanten.
De alpenmarmot wordt maximaal 15 a 18 jaar oud. Natuurlijke vijanden zijn onder andere de steenarend, oehoe en vos. Jonge dieren vallen ten prooi aan raaf, havik en steenmarter. Vroeger werden ze ook door de mens gedood.

Alpenmurmeltiere sind typische Vertreter einer eiszeitlichen Tierwelt, die wahrend des Pleistozans auch im europaischen Tiefland zu finden waren. Heute sind sie als sogenanntes Eiszeitrelikt in ihrer Verbreitung auf Gebirgshohenlagen begrenzt, da sie nur hier geeignete Umweltbedingungen finden. Ein sechs bis sieben Monate wahrender Winterschlaf ermoglicht ihnen die Besiedelung dieser unwirtlichen Regionen. Wahrend des Winterschlafes leben sie ausschlie?lich von korpereigenen Fettreserven.
Zwischen weiblichen und mannlichen Alpenmurmeltieren besteht kein auffalliger Unterschied, der es bei Feldbeobachtungen erlaubt, die Geschlechter voneinander zu unterscheiden. Mannchen sind tendenziell etwas gro?er und schwerer.
Die Tiere haben eine Kopf-Rumpflange von etwa vierzig bis funfzig Zentimeter. Die Schwanzlange betragt zehn bis zwanzig Zentimeter. Das Gewicht schwankt innerhalb des Jahresablaufes. Gesunde, ausgewachsene Mannchen wiegen aber mindestens drei Kilogramm. Das Gewicht der Weibchen liegt etwas darunter.
Der Kopf ist schwarzlich und grau mit heller Schnauze. Die Ohren sind klein und behaart. Das Fell besteht aus dichten, kraftigen Grannenhaaren und einer Unterwolle aus kurzeren, etwas gewellten Haaren. Die Fellfarbe ist grundsatzlich sehr variabel. Der Rucken kann schiefergrau, hellbraun oder rotlichbraun sein, die Korperunterseite ist meist mehr gelblich gefarbt. Vereinzelt treten auch Individuen mit einem schwarzlich wirkenden Fell auf. Das Fell wird einmal jahrlich gewechselt. Bei den meisten Individuen findet dieser Fellwechseln im Juni statt.
Auffallend am Korperbau des Alpenmurmeltieres sind der muskulose und kraftige Schultergurtel und die ausgepragten Grabpfoten. Die Vorderbeine sind ein wenig kurzer als die Hinterbeine. Die Vorderfu?e haben vier Zehen, die Hinterfu?e dagegen funf. Alpenmurmeltiere sind Sohlenganger, ihre Fu?sohlen weisen gut ausgebildete Ballen auf und sind unbehaart.

Onesie for Sale not Baby.

So, I've been having tons of fun making little shirts for the wee one: HLB as well as for baby gifts. I recently started dying the material and I love it, although I've dabbled in t-dye too, I think I prefer the one tone deal, although I do think I'm beginning to really like a very subtle t-dye, kind of a two-toner.
ThurstonforMoore came to life years ago at the end of a Sonic Youth show wherein Laura Holder and I were trying to come up with catch phrases to get them to get back on stage, for the 3rd time. (Did I get that right, Holdi?) Anyhow, I ran with it and made up a couple of shirts. (Laura, is yours still intact, is there a photo somewhere of you in it?)
I've switched some things up since I first started ironing on, like using velvet letters versus the flat fronted ones, which I've noticed proves to better for wear and tear. I use RIT dye and it works well with not bleeding as I wash them several times before wearing. The color is pretty nice too.
So, here goes, these are for sale. I do tons of different colors for the shirts but mostly have been sticking with the black or white lettering because it shows up better. I try to use the Gerber Organic brand but it only goes to 9 months. This Gerber Onesie is made in India.
And Hey! I'm also doing adult sizes too, but not in Onesies, sadly. We'll leave that wackiness up to some other goofball.

Our friend Maiko and her Japanese community in Brooklyn threw a stoop sale yesterday with all proceeds going to the Japanese Disaster relief fund. Prior to the stoop sale they had already accumulated over $10,000.00! I hope yesterday was a great day for them as well.
Maiko and her husband Aleks designed these baby tshirts and onesies with all proceeds going to the fund.
Thankfully her friends and family are safe, but she knows her country needs her and so she is stepping up to the plate as is the rest of her community.

Many people see Christ as a long-dead, myth-shrouded teacher who lives on only in fading memory, a man "risen from the dead" only in the sense that his teachings have survived. There are scholars busily at work trying to find out which words attributed to Jesus in the New Testament were actually said by him (not many, it turns out). Yet even skeptics celebrate Christmas with a special holiday meal and the exchange of gifts.

The problem of miracles doesn't intrude, for what could be more normal than birth? If Jesus lived, then he was born, and so, with little or no faith in the rest of Christian doctrine, we can celebrate his birth, whatever our degree of faith. Pascha, with its miraculous resurrection from the grave, is more and more lost to us, but at least some of the joy of Christmas remains. Perhaps in the end the Nativity feast will lead us back to faith in all its richness. We will be rescued by Christmas.

The icon of Christ's Nativity, ancient though it is, takes note of our "modern" problem. There (usually in the lower left hand corner) we find a morose, despondent Joseph listening to a wizened figure (but in the above example a young man) who represents what we might call "the voice of unenlightened reason." What is the old man whispering to Joseph? Something like: "A miracle? Surely you aren't so foolish as to believe Mary conceived this child without a human father. But if not you, then who was it?" As we read the Gospel passages concerning Joseph, we are repeatedly reminded that he didn't easily make leaps of faith.

Divine activity intrudes into our lives in such a mundane, physical way. A woman gives birth to a child, as women have been doing since Eve. Joseph has witnessed that birth and there is nothing different about it, unless it be that it occurred in abject circumstances, far from home, in a cave in which animals are kept. Joseph has had his dreams, he has heard angelic voices, he has been reassured in a variety of ways that the child born of Mary is none other than the Awaited One, the Anointed, God's Son. But belief comes hard. Giving birth is arduous, as we see in Mary's reclining figure, resting after labor — and so is the labor to believe. Mary has completed this stage of her struggle, but Joseph still grapples with his.

The theme is not only in Joseph's bewildered face. The rigorous black of the cave of Christ's birth in the center of the icon represents all human disbelief, all fear, all hopelessness. In the midst of a starless night in the cave of our despair, Christ, "the Sun of Truth," enters history having been clothed in flesh in Mary's body. It is just as the Evangelist John said in the beginning of his Gospel: "The light shines in the darkness and the darkness cannot overcome it."

The Nativity icon is in sharp contrast to the sentimental imagery we are used to in western Christmas art. In the icon there is no charming Bethlehem bathed in the light of the nativity star but only a rugged mountain with a few plants. The austere mountain suggests a hard, unwelcoming world in which survival is a real battle — the world since our expulsion from Paradise.

The most prominent figure in the icon is Mary, framed by the red blanket she is resting on — red: the color of life, the color of blood. Orthodox Christians call her the Theotokos, a Greek word meaning God-bearer or Mother of God. Her quiet but wholehearted assent to the invitation brought to her by the Archangel Gabriel has led her to Bethlehem, making a cave at the edge of a peasant village the center of the universe. He who was distant has come near, first filling her body, now visible in the flesh.

As is usual in iconography, the main event is moved to the foreground, free of its surroundings. So the cave is placed behind rather than around Mary and her child.

The Gospel records that Christ's birth occurred in a cave that was being used as a stable. In fact the cave still exists in Bethlehem. Countless pilgrims have prayed there over the centuries. But it no longer looks like the cave it was. In the fourth century, at the Emperor Constantine's order, the cave was transformed into a chapel. At the same time, above the cave, a basilica was built.

We see in the icon that Christ's birth is not only for us, but for all creation. The donkey and the ox, both gazing at the newborn child, recall the opening verses of the Prophet Isaiah: 'An ox knows its owner and a donkey its master's manger..." They also represent "all creatures great and small," endangered, punished and exploited by human beings. They too are victims of the Fall. Christ's Nativity is for them as well as for us.

There is something about the way Mary turns away from her son that makes us aware of a struggle different than Joseph is experiencing. She knows very well her child has no human Father, but is anxious about her child's future. She can see in the circumstances of his birth tha

So my whole "12 Days of Christmas" didn't actually happen... I got too tied up with finals to stop and take one picture each day! I actually spent two nights in a row without sleep! (I don't recommend it). And then I got back 3 days before Christmas.. then after Christmas it was straight to California to visit family!

Just some useless trivia that has nothing to do with this photo of the newest baby elephant at the San Diego Wild Animal Park. The little guy was less than a month old in this picture.

With the baby too!

As we descended from the Tibetan plateau by car we passed a muslim village and invited ourselves in. I wanted to photograph this beautiful muslim girl but she rushed to grab the baby for inclusion in the photo.

It is pointless to publish the landscapes from this trip as so many more beautiful photos can surely be found on the internet.

But the people photos are different. This may be one of only a handful of photos that exist of these children, certainly at that stage of their lives.

Progress will probably have now reached their village, and many of the villagers may now have mobile phones and small digital cameras like the one I was using in 2002. As these children grow up they will probably be photographed thousands of times by family and friends.

Baby Secret project / Before

I purchased a very distressed Baby Secret doll and removed the head and hands. I didn't think I would be able to salvage the hair, but baby lotion works wonders. Also bar soap and a toothbrush work very quickly to remove that grime and dirt from the vinyl. I'm still working on her at the moment and am going to redo the jumper and give her some accessories. Stay tuned for the after photo.

World Vision’s Area Development programme (ADP) in Melghat, Maharashtra has designed an effective model to reduce the cycle of malnutrition. With the support of the local health department, World Vision has been working towards reducing malnutrition by addressing the health status and lifestyle of the people.

Malnutrition also poses serious risk to the health of the young mothers and their new-born babies. Studies have revealed that an under-weight mother bears children who are under-nourished. Malnutrition has adverse effects on the health of the mother and the unborn child. Young mothers who themselves are malnourished give birth to children with disabilities, poor immunity and can even lead to the death of children.

To break this vicious cycle, the project is focusing on special interventions among pregnant women and lactating mothers. It will be targeting about 1000 women who are pregnant and lactating mothers till the time their babies reach 6 months. While encouraging exclusive breast feeding for the babies till they attain 6 months, the project will also be giving supplementary nutrition to the mothers.

Melghat ADP is one of the 25 projects where the ‘Jump Start’ health initiative has been in implementation within World Vision India. Emphasizing on the health and nutritional requirement of pregnant mothers and children till they reach two years, the ‘Jump Start’ initiative is one way of breaking the cycle of Malnutrition.

She is 33 weeks pregnant, as of today, with her second child and is currently battling a very difficult pregnancy.
She has been on bed rest in the hospital for the past month and a half to keep from going into pre-mature labor.
The child, if it lasts full term, will be born in mid-December, but is expected to be at least a month early, if not sooner.
She is one of the strongest women that I personally know, and has struggled with a lot in her life.
She is the person I take after most in my family, and I love her.

This is for the grandmas - The breaker of tripods, the stander on two feet unassisted for short periods of time, Aliana. She's standing unassisted here and the look of concentration on her face was great.

Not the strongest image ever, but I wanted to practice portraits and she doesn't complain much even after the 20th shot. I also wanted to try some stuff for the "Importance of Darkness" PCA and it's easier for me to think about negative space in B&W than color (I'm a little slow some days). I wish I had captured all of her hand when composing. (I think I was distracted by the beauty of the model ;)

I put a clear plastic deli tub over the built in flash in an attempt to diffuse the light a little and it worked to a certain extent. Really I just need to buy a decent flash that I can bounce.

I almost did a selective color on this because her eyes were such a bright blue.

No idea where the EXIF went but it was f/4 1/60 34mm with the rebel XT if anyone really cares...

this is one of those shots where you have NO idea if it's gonna come out as you're taking it, and then when you look at the camera afterwards and see what you've got, standing there in the dirt in the middle of a waterfront junkyard with the sun on your back and not a soul in sight except the people you done came with, your eyes bug out and you find yourself saying "holy fucking shit" in a really loud voice.
