Day Twenty Four Daddy-daughter bathtime! She's been super good at the whole taking a nap thing. I don't know if it's the heat that's making her dozy or if she's just getting better at it in general but she's going down super easy when it comes to nap time. She's still only napping for an hour or so but it's still a solid nap usually. Going to bed is also on the rise, now if only she'd stay there. Ah well, it'll come with time. We seawalled it again this morning. 8km hard walking. I'm a little frustrated though. Stupid fat thighs rubbing together and getting all chafe-y. I also gave her a bottle of water after her formula bottle this morning. She drank maybe a half ounce of it before being all "Blech what is this crap?", better than nothing I suppose. It's becoming more obvious that I need to do some specific skin bits tanning as you can see where my tank tops are covering on my back there. I'm going to have to selectively suntan lotion and then wander around shirtless and try and even that out. I'm planning on going to Wreck one of these days and hopefully that will help out. We'll see. The psych people called again from UBC saying they were interested in Isobel joining their study again so we're going to head up to the Endowment lands next Tuesday. I'm sure Brandi will be keen if she gets another shirt and degree thingy. UPS called as well. It looks like the Utilikilt people might have put the wrong address on my parcel. When the chick called today to be all "We need your buzzer number" she read my apartment number as the building. I'm to call them tomorrow and confirm things. I suspect this means I'll be chilling all day at home tomorrow waiting for my package. Probably a good thing if my leg is still all chafed. We went to the beach today as well for like 45 minutes. Hung out with Angel a bit before heading off to Park Royal for some purchases. Angel needed to get some batteries for her camera and I picked up a mini laptop for offloading photos when we go on holiday. In addition I can bring it to gaming on Bloodbowl nights or whatever. It was pretty cheap and the guy was appalled that I didn't want the warranty. Isobel also had her first taste of mashed potatoes. Admittedly they were the cafeteria type mashed potatoes but it was another new taste. I also put a little bit of gravy on them so a bit of new protein as well. She ate a lot as well as a whole jar of squash. I think her eyes might have been bigger than her stomach though as she puked a bunch of times between dinner and bathtime. Now she's down and not making noise but she was getting quite verbose about not wanting to go to sleep. Since she's become an amateur crawler she crawled to the head of the crib and started trying to claw down the crib liner while screaming. She's so tired though and she went to bed fairly quickly. Maple boards 59bf of figured maple I got on sale at Rockler. This pile has been blocking my workbench for a couple months now. This is for the crib I'm going to build using the plans from the November 2006 issue of Wood magazine. It's a modular system that makes a crib, toddler bed, & full sized bed. Después de probar y probar, cambio y mas cambios, fotos y mas fotos y casi 15 minutos, este es el resultado y esta vez si que puedo prometer que es la ultima….. creo. NUEVE MES El feto recibe anticuerpos de la madre y sus pulmones ya están preparados para funcionar en el exterior. La piel deja de estar arrugada y el lanugo se cae casi por completo. Pesa cerca de 3 kilos y mide unos 50 centímetros. El feto es capaz de distinguir a través de sombras los reflejos de luz que provienen del exterior y nota un resplandor cuando la luz del sol da en el vientre de su madre. Sus nalgas presionan contra el diafragma de la madre. Son más frecuentes los movimientos respiratorios , aunque todavía no hay aire en sus pulmones. Los huesos de la cabeza tienen una gran plasticidad para facilitar el nacimiento del bebé. Al final de este periodo, el feto engorda unos 28 gramos diarios. Las uńas han crecido bastante y en ocasiones algunos recién nacidos tienen algún arańazo en la cara. Baby on Hipstamatic tour 2011 - Fiskehuset, Holmbladsgade. The best fish in town. I go here about once a week. They sell 'fiskefrikadeller'. We always have one of these. This is almost one picture per day while I was on parental leave for 12 weeks with my youngest daughter Sigrid. She sleeps in almost every picture. My aim was to document my whereabouts in this period. As you can see the pram was around town. When she woke up we would sit in a café and enjoy a banana and play with some toy. Eventually she learned to crawl and this whole baby development thing was very enjoyable. I got to experience a milestone in Sigrids life first-hand. Yay! Pictures are snapped with iPhone 4 app Hipstamatic, set on random. I think these filters adds an interesting glow and flare to the routine of walking. At least this made me happy. Christmas Dress 1 We attempted some portraits of my daughter in her Christmas dress today. Things seemed to go wrong from the start. I left my photo backdrops and backdrop stand at school where I was using it with my students (we made due with our comforter). Then, Ellia just did not want to cooperate tonight. She was way too distracted with everything else to sit still. This is actually the first session we've tried with her since she started walking. I had spent the day painting a nice white chair just for this session. We were able to get her to sit still in it for about a total of 10 seconds. Therefore, I didn't get too many shots with it. I was lucky to get the few that I did. And so we find another important reason for depending on carrot juice with its abundant vitamins in natural proportions to each other. CARROTS A REMARKABLE FOOD Carrots are truly a remarkable food. They contain the vitamins, the important minerals, carbohydrates in easily available form, and some protein. They contain no deleterious substances and are entirely wholesome. They supply in abundance the two specific food constituents in which - according to Sherman, McCollum, Rose, Sure, et al - the American dietary is most deficient in calcium and vitamin A. Carrot juice should be used everywhere to bolster or fortify the regular diet. Hauser and Berg, in their Dictionary of Foods," say: "Carrot juice constitutes a powerful cleansing and acid-neutralizing food. Carrots contain an insulin like ingredient and a hormone-like ferment called toko-kinin. This is probably why diabetics digest the sugar in carrots more easily than any other kind of sugar." The medicinal properties of carrots have long been known to horse breeders and livestock growers. Racing horses are given carrots to keep them in fine fettle, young cattle are fed carrots to prepare them for market, wise poultry farmers see that carrot mash is placed regularly in the chicken runs. Ill-conditioned animals of all kinds are fed carrots to restore them to proper condition. Perhaps the fact that they have been used so extensively as a food for livestock has prejudiced the public somewhat against carrots for human consumption but a proper knowledge of their true nutritional value should dissipate any such feeling. One authority says that carrots are concentrated sun's rays and that they contain the substance that furnishes the impulse for life's processes. Dr. Crile says that such captured sunshine, shining again within living cells, accounts for the life energy of men and animals. Plants store up this sunshine and it is released in the body when we eat them as food. Let us summarize the properties of carrot juice and see why it deserves such high rank among health foods as we have chosen to give it. We will find that it has important qualities, some of which it shares with other vegetables and foods; some of which are distinctly its own: It is very high in alkaline minerals. It is a remarkable source of vitamins. It is easily digested and can be consumed in quantities large enough for rapid body revitalization. It is extremely palatable when properly prepared and served. It facilitates the digestion of certain important auxiliary foods. In addition to these well-established qualities of carrot juice, it has also been established through biochemical research that: The alkalies in carrots, particularly the calcium, are more easily appropriated than those in other vegetables. - Blatherwick and Long. Carrots contain no deleterious substances such as are frequently found in other foods. - Marshall. Carrots possess certain antiseptic properties which tend to limit putrefactive changes within the body. - Metchnikoff, Kellogg, Berg and others. Carrots grown in goiter-free sections are rich in iodine. - Sherman. Carrots supply considerable mucin, a substance that serves as a salve and lubricant for the mucous nembranes. - Hauser. CARROT JUICE FOR CHILDREN The value of carrot juice for children can hardly be over-estimated. It supplies the vitamin A so necessary for growth and vitality and is, withal, almost as excellent a source of calcium as milk. Benjamin Gaye-lord Hauser recommends the use of carrot juice with milk - half and half - for all children, beginning with babies six months or more of age. You may expect a child to exhibit considerably higher health than usual if the milk is reinforced with a quantity of carrot juice. The youngsters love this combination, many small children turning up their noses at straight milk after having a sample of the mixture. It requires no great knowledge of food chemistry to understand the excellence of milk and carrot juice together as a food for small children, for it is appetizing, eas Goodies from America! When we were taking everything out of the suitcase we found a slip saying that airport security had checked his bag. Nothing was missing that it's cool. I told him before hand that it's okay to bring dry goods but he was scared. So he knows now that dry goods won't get him in trouble with customs. Christmas Through The Eyes Of A Child One time I came across a blog for the artist Greg Olsen. He had painted a wonderful picture of Santa standing at a beautiful table where the nativity was placed. He had in his hand the baby Jesus. The near by candle was lighting up the face of Santa and the small figurine. Greg is a very inspired artist. He wrote a poem to go with this special painting. This little poem was from his blog in 2009. "The Spirit of Christmas" By the magical light of a small Christmas candle A little old man tries to carefully handle The small porcelain manger which serves as a bed For the wee Baby Jesus to lay down His head. In wonder he brings the manger up to his view, Smiles at the baby and whispers, “I love you! I love you for bringing this season of joy, I love you for growing to a man from a boy; For being our light and leading the way, For being the spirit which makes Christmas Day! You’ve been my mentor, my model, my hero and guide, Please continue to help me and stay by my side. I’ve tried to follow your teachings and give as you gave, Reminding all to be kind and that it’s wise to behave. Help me to serve others and bring them your light, Especially the children, please bless them tonight! Some have so very little, scarce food for their table, You know how it feels - you were born in a stable! The largest White Shark captured in Malta. Malta: When a great white shark is born, along with up to a dozen siblings, it immediately swims away from its mother. Baby sharks are on their own right from the start, and their mother may see them only as prey. At birth the baby shark is about 5 feet (1.5 meters) long already; as it grows it may reach a length three times that. The pup (which is what a baby shark is called) will live its life at the top of the ocean’s food chain. As the largest predatory fish in the ocean, great white sharks are the top predators of the sea. But before it grows larger, the pup must avoid predators bigger than it is—including other great white sharks. Many baby sharks do not survive their first year. Young great white sharks eat fish (including other sharks) and rays. As it grows, the shark’s favorite prey becomes sea mammals, especially sea lions and seals. Sharks count on the element of surprise as they hunt. When they see a seal at the surface of the water, sharks will often position themselves underneath the seal. Then they swim upward at a fast sprint, bursting out of the water in a leap called a breach, and falling back into the water with the seal in their mouths. Sharks don’t chew their food; they rip off chunks of meat and swallow them whole. After eating a seal or a sea lion the great white shark can last a month or two without another big meal. Female great white sharks usually bear their first young when they are 12 to 14 years old. And if the pups survive their youth, they, too, become predators at the top of the food chain. ********************* This is the story of one white shark captured in Malta April 17, 1987. Alfredo Cutajar, a local fisherman, of the fishing village called 'Wied-iz-zurrieq' was out for his daily tour. It was the time of the year for fishing tuna and swordfish, so he had a hook 25 cm long tied to a big rope and a ballast of stone. It is a type of fish that is very popular for Maltese fishermen because of always excellent profits. But this time not a single tuna or swordfish was biting Alfredo's steel hook (Alfredo is nicknamed "Son of God" by everyone because he is the only one who catches all the biggest sharks that visit our waters). At exactly 4:30 a.m. on April 17th, Alfredo boarded his 5 meter boat, powered by a 9.9 CV outboard, prepared for his lonely tour of checking his hooks and collecting his bait. After about 1/2 hour he arrived at the point where he left, as a rule, his first hook. His lines were always connected to a big marker, either a big cork or an empty jug. Checking them one by one, he saw that one of the cork floats was submerged and that something big was attached: a swordfish or maybe a tuna. He approached the float and tried to anchor the rope of the line but it was too heavy and stuck. He looked around hoping to see someone in the vicinity who could help him. He saw a big fishing boat and began signaling so that it would come to help him. Quickly the big fishing boat reached him and soon the line was fastened to the windlass and hoisted on board. While this was going on, Alfredo noticed an enormous white shape coming out from the deep blue sea. Nearer the surface, Alfredo realized that he was dealing with a gigantic shark that was struggling for life. Little by little it was brought to the surface: it was almost two times the length of Alfredo's boat. It was so enormous that it was necessary to hang it alongside the big fishing boat and it took three hours to return to the village. When they arrived, the shark was still showing signs of life while the people gathered around to look at it. But disappointingly, the shark was too heavy for the available dock davit, which was used only for hauling small boats, so the big fishing boat and shark went back to sea to another fishing village, Marsaxlokk, where there is a crane on the dock. There also a big crowd gathered. I was present, with a tape measure, in order to take down all the shark data. The monster was barely out of the water up to its stomach when I and another fisherman began to cut it open. We pulled out a completely intact 2 m blue shark, a dolphin of about 2.5 m in two pieces and a 70 cm turtle. Only the head of the dolphin was in a state of putrefaction. The liver of the shark measured from one end to the other about 4 m. When it was carried to land and completely examined, we realized we were dealing with a female. The uterus open, I discovered that only a week before she had given birth to 10 pups, after 22 months of pregnancy. Therefore being very hungry, she swallowed all that happened to come in front of her. That is normal for a white shark. Moreover, normally the male remains around the female until the end of the gestation and the birth of the pups. That must have been what happened too to Alfredo's shark because a male was seen in the area during those days and a fisherman who had ca I've been tagged! I'm so excited, I get to play too!! I’ve always loved animals and hope to have a house full of cats and dogs when we have our own home. 5. I had a baby brother who died of SIDS when I was 2 (he was 7 weeks old). 6. I’ve always been fascinated by Helen Keller (and love the movie “The Miracle Worker”) 7. I have never smoked (never even tried a cigarette). 8. I always wanted to be able to breastfeed my child and have now done so for 17 months (and counting!). 9. I LOVE LOVE LOVE making candles (had to give it up in 2004 when we moved into a tiny apt. & since we moved I haven’t wanted to mess up our new kitchen, so I’m waiting to move into a home with enough space for a messy studio!). 10. I’ve always wanted to be a well-known author (or artist or something accomplished) and have been writing my life story since I was 17 11. My son was in the breech position for most of the third trimester of my pregnancy, and his head had to be unwedged from under my ribs during the c-section. 12. I always wanted to learn Sign Language, and now I am learning to sign along with my son 13. I love to sing 14. Brigantine, NJ is my favorite place on earth 15. I met my husband on-line, thanks to a Yahoo personal ad 16. I have been eating fried matzo every day since Passover of last year, which I have never done before (matzo was always only for Passover in my house/mind). If you read, it will be a great work out for your stomach- It's my side of the STORY! 1. two WEEKS ago I was tagged to tell all about ME! So hang on for the stomach work out, for what I had was terrible due to magic marker or ink on my face! I did but erased the pic, for I had INK all over my face, so I thought that would not be the best to post, might loose my friends that way! Actually I think it was magic marker! From being in second grade, some day perhaps, I will graduate from there or maybe even be de-moted time will TELL! Thanks to Larry's photgraphy this is a much better pic dontcha think?? At least, NO Ink on the face! 2. I love the LORD with all my heart, and soul,, and mind, and I KNOW he loves me too:)) He is my LORD saviour and ONE day a soon coming KING! and that makes me smile every day as well! Great to be HIS! 3. I am wife, a mama ,and I have been all my life! and a friend to all that will allow me to be! Got married at 16, had my Josh at 19, and became the world's greatst mother in law at 44, years old! YES GREATEST!!! just ask!!! I was in HOT WATER!, trying to wiggle my way out, I decided to fix my daddy a sandwich and made it with delicious Cabbage! just a few lucy ism'ms oh I could tell ya a 1000!! Needless, to say that did not help my troubled situation, I found out quickly cabbage and fried bologna do not go together! Well, at least I did try! I was a big time daddy's girl and I out lived him already for he passed away at 45 years old! with a massive heart attack! That was 26 years ago too! Yes, sometimes the best ones, do die way too young! That makes me SAD! 7 My dad and mom's name rhyme! Now try to figure that one out too;) She is Gran'ma Lillie! So it will not be hard for you to get his first name, I do not think! Just what rhymes with Lillie! Far as names go, my name has LOU in no where but nick names stick like glue! My oughta to have mentioned that way up at the TOP!! He will completely , understand, this though, he accepts my ways and goes on! I am glad for that or I would be homeless, Rusty, sweetie I love you! and you know ding a ling here! Really, he knows me!! TRUST ME THERE TOO! We have been married 10 years! Boy, Have I ever grey-ed him in that time! 9. I have a precious mother! you have seen us all in pic together-- ( maybe a bit too much!) My family is all about our 'Faith, Family and Friends, and Fellowship and Fun! and Photo's as well! This keeps us a close family at times too, I think! 10.I live in, TN, every day i awke, I know God is there waiting for me to say Good Morning Lord, I love you, too!" The L Word: Welcome to Our Planet I've been a fan of The L Word since the first ep, but never obsessively enough to buy a fan book like this. I was sucked into the L Hole, as Catherine calls it, because a new character was introduced who wields power tools, wears a flight suit and makes sculpture. Plus she's deaf and is played by Marlee Matllin who both signs and speaks. This visual bilingualism intrigued me immensely, especially since she stands up for truth, artistic integrity and self-knowledge. I was smitten as was Bette, the show's lead, played by Jennifer Beal who is more beautiful, now, than she was as a kid in Flashdance. She also made her character biracial which is so rare in media especially when played by an actor who actually is biracial. It is—as Showtime boasts—groundbreaking. The show itself embodies lots of plot lines that are not represented anywhere else in television, not with such wit and humor, anyway, nor with such breadth. Not to mention that it feeds our insatiable appetite for intimate scenes between women. After the first season, the show's creators showed serious flaws in character continuation and development, plot choices and wardrobe design, rendering the show emotionally treacherous and prompting the formation of ad hoc support groups. Still it is the only show we can really call ours and has become extremely influential in setting the parameters for other queer media. This fan book, which only covers season one and two, is pretty lightweight, but shows how the show was developed and has evolved. Lots of pictures, trivia, complete episode recaps and lists of now famous lines, props, pivotal scenes and plot turning points. Some of the L Word Plots that I have lived: The sperm donor search was the opening plotline of season one. I did spend some time searching for a sperm donor during my wanna-baby window, but decided against the whole project. Catherine and I got to watch our married lesbian friends go through the process so this is pretty much the cornerstone plot of lesbian life today. The L Word made it funny and bearable. The Planet coffee house where the girls hang out and talk is key. The most vibrant queer/bohemian hang-out of my day was The New Varsity bar, restaurant and art-house, movie theatre. I was in love with a tall, attractive lesbian there who managed the theatre. Tall, sexy, Marina runs the Planet in the L Word and became the lesbian heartthrob of the opening season. The Varsity died of high rent trauma and was bought by Barnes & Noble for a bookstore, despite our valiant efforts to save it as a theatre. The Planet closes briefly, but is saved by a drag king with money. One of the characters, Jenny, writes and publishes her memoirs and receives scathing reviews fitting for her level of narcism. Sincerely hope this will not be my fate and am constantly reminded by Jenny of my own self-obsessed youth. Jenny is the pivotal character in season one, since she is lesbian-vampired by Marina. That is, she was straight until Marina snared her. This is familiar territory as reported in one of my essays, "Confessions Of A Lesbian Vampire" published in the anthology "Dyke Life" back in '95. Jenny and Shane search for a roommate in season two and screen an assortment of homophobic and inappropriate candidates. I was always in charge of the roommate search; it is one of the more onerous chores of being queer because inevitably someone is going to say they aren't comfortable living with homos or they come with their own freak baggage because they think that since you're queer you'll be okay with it. Two L Word characters do a teach-in on tolerance and gay people for a classroom of 5th graders. I did a handful of these in my career, but only at high schools. I got the same question—"How do girls do it?" but from a sincerely confused girl not a snarky boy. In season three the L Word killed off one of it's most popular characters with breast cancer because the creators wanted to raise awareness of breast cancer. Fans agree that this was possibly the biggest mistake in lesbian television history (which is basically 85% The L Word). Both Catherine and I were videographers for a metastatic breast cancer support group study, so are very familiar with this journey to death. Our professional opinion is that a young, fit woman would not have been taken so quickly by a mere infection. Catherine watched her best friend die, as did many in the decade of AIDS; breast cancer was the disease celebre of the lesbian community. In season one, Christian Fundamentalists picket our heroine Bette at home and at the art gallery where she works because of a controversial art exhibit. It doesn't take much to set these people off. I received bible-quoting hate mail for my appearance as an out lesbian columnist in the Palo Alto Weekly, a free newspaper. It sent chills down my spine and every time someone self-identifies as a Christian, the hair stands up on the back of my neck. So it was v Pixel's 365 - Day 1 - Entering a Brave New World It’s funny….life that is. We take it for granted so often and rarely appreciate it for it’s true beauty. Most of us never stop to relish in the miracle of life. We go on day in and day out following the grind and practiced routine. More often than not we succumb to the inconsequential things in life that bare no true meaning on who we are or what we believe in. Regardless of where we live, what nationality we are or where are allegiance lies; one things rings evident throughout. Life is reflected upon most when we come into this world and again when we leave it. When a child is born in Bangladesh, people celebrate. When someone passes in Morocco, people morn. The emotions felt have an equal comparison to something as primitive an elementary as a smile; their universal. Life is truly a miracle. Now that I’m among the millions of individuals that already understand these words, I can truly say that there’s no greater miracle then the birth of your child. When you hear their first cry; you can’t help but to swell up with emotions. When they grab your finger for the first time, look into your eyes with innocence or fill your head with the sweet smell of “new baby” (lol), you know that there is no other explanation. Miracles DO happen. I hope that I’m able to make the best out of the gift that I’ve been given. I know with all of my heart that I’ll be a good dad. I pray however, that I’ll become a GREAT…. father.
