Quote Matt Levy: "This past Wednesday, we participated in a day-long citywide scavenger hunt, echoing the 1979 New York cult flick The Warriors. You might be familiar with The Warriors: a total budget operation, focusing on the odyssey of one street gang from Coney Island, called to the Bronx for a huge citywide gang meeting. Someone shoots the mercurial spokesman for all the gangs and then frames our heroes, the Warriors. Its up to these intrepid boys to get all the way back to Coney, fighting other gangs, avoiding the bulls and eventually proving their innocence once they get there.

It's a hell of a show. Not for the hack acting, and not for the cardboard plot development, but for the cinema verite – the scenes shot on the streets of a post-apocalyptic NYC, with the subway graffed over and the streets filled with your usual late-70s characters: hookers, drug dealers, and crazy gang maniacs wielding baseball bats. Not that we'd ever wish for a return to the end of the 70s: us, along with just about everyone we know, wouldn't be able to scrape by five minutes in the neighborhoods we live and work in today. Don't get us wrong – we miss the graffiti and the rap music, but not the danger.

The film screening was sponsored by Netflix and the day-long scavenger hunt was organized by an events group called Original Alamo Production. The gist: gather the 15 gangs, in full costumes and attitude, then start the race in Riverside Park at 97th st (the site of the Grand Conclave at the start of the film) and set the gangs off on a time trial, taking them across boroughs, meeting actors and scoring points, taking pictures and ending up in Coney Island for the actual screening.

We were the Hi-Hats. Their only moment in the film is at the beginning, as all the gangs are making their way to the Bronx. Black slacks, black suspenders, red shirts with black stripes, white face paint and tall black top hats. Crazy artist mimes from SoHo. We followed the whole thing, except wore shorts instead of pants, tanks instead of long sleeve shirts, and painted arms instead of sleeves. There were nine of us. And we kicked fucking ass. We were the most energetic, the most enthusiastic, and we had the coolest homemade costumes. We were the loudest and the most into it. We were definitely the most badass of all the gangs.

We didn't win. Didn't even come in second or third place. We blame this somewhat insignificant shortcoming on the fact that, along with not heading in the right direction for the first 30 minutes (blame the tour guide hubris on that one), as well as not being able to find the random well dressed woman sitting on a bench within one whole mile of Riverside park between 86th and 110th sts, the entire scavenger hunt was based predominately on luck, as opposed to knowledge or skill. So the gangs that first located the well dressed woman sitting on a bench, got to hustle along to the next checkpoint, and blast ahead in the competition. Us Hi-Hats, with our encyclopedic knowledge of NYC, were stuck wandering back and forth for two fucking hours, trying to find this idiot on the bench. We wanted more proof of skill, not luck of the draw.

Still, we don't regret it for a second. This is the type of history we enjoy recreating: the nitty gritty past that, when hauled wheezing and coughing into the present, doesn't conclude with a bat to the head or a night in the slammer. We've come a long way, baby. "

BBQ Sauce of your choice

1. Preheat the oven to 325.
2. Place the ribs (having washed them) in a casserole dish facing up.
3. Sprinkle salt and pepper over them (preferably Kosher salt)
4. Pour a little olive oil over the ribs
5. Slice up the whole onion and sprinkle it around the ribs in the dish
6. Place the celery and rosemary on top of the ribs
7. Cover the ribs with aluminum foil
8. Cook the ribs in the oven for 1 1/2 hours
9. Cover the ribs with BBQ sauce as you like and Q them on medium flame/heat 'til the sauce glazes onto the ribs.
10. Repeat step 9 as often as you like. I usually do 3 times.

Save some of your sauce. Heat it up and dribble a bit onto the cut up ribs... and leave some on the table for dipping.

If anything has ever been true about me it's that I can never meet anyone famous without gushing and making a fool of myself. I almost always dork-out and say something embarrassingly lame. I was determined to not go out like a sucka when M.I.A. had her autograph session after her show.

While we waited in line to meet her, Ava and Mariela clowned me for a list of potential baby names that I've kept that mostly consists of poetic hippy names. So I figured if Mariela didn't like the names that I came up with for our future children then maybe I should seek some advice from M.I.A..

I made sure Mariela went ahead of me in the autograph line and when it came time for me to get my CD signed I mustered every bit of courage I have and said "You just met Mariela, my girlfriend. We're planning on having a baby in the future and I was wondering if you could suggest any names?"

M.I.A. was surprised by the question but actually paused to give it serious thought. "There's two" she said in her adorable English accent holding up two fingers. "Skylar is the first...And the second one is rather similar to your name, it's Rianni."

"Thank you so much!" I gushed as I collected my CD and ran to see Mariela and Ava waiting for me. I couldn't believe I had the nerve to ask her for baby names but I'm so glad I did. Of the two, Mariela and I liked Rianni the best.

So yes, one day I will proudly tell my future son or daughter that they were named by M.I.A.

3 Perspectives on Feminism

People who watch commercials or those who read trendy magazines have seen
striking images of women whose appearance has been radically changed. Many of
these women altered their image through diet and exercise, makeup, or surgery.
I believe women, either those on television or on the streets, have shielded
their choice to improve their appearance as an effort to gain power in
normative society. My first perspective of feminism is shown in the woman's
face. It demonstrates women and their pain to surrender themselves to expensive
and risky, deforming, and fatal procedures in an attempt to claim power through
altered beauty. The big hair demonstrates stressful woman who fear and dismay upon
weight gain, aging, or discontentment to standard principles of appearance.

The fact that women are always in danger and limited in their opportunities, is
dire. It stimulates mistrust and fear of men and as a result breeds a feeling
of weakness among women. My second perspective on feminism is shown through the
heels. Heels can be the height of superiority and feminism or become the
degrading of women in many wrong ways. The heels are used in my painting to
represent the issue most women question. They wonder, if they can be just as good
as men and do just as many things, why do they have to continuously prove it?
The heels show that although it allows women to be physically taller, it only
hurts them because they have to put in so much effort to do so. Woman
should be able to be just as good as men, in their own feminine way.

There is no hesitation in saying women and men are different. Not only do women
never look good with a beard and hairy face, they also endure pain more than
men. My 3rd perspective of feminism is shown in the gum ball machine and water
drops. The water drops demonstrate two things: one when a woman’s water breaks
when giving birth, and another to demonstrate tears. Although giving birth
causes excruciating pain, it's what differentiates women from men. The gum ball
machine represents how woman are naturally born to give birth. The blue and
pink gum balls symbolize the random outcomes of gender when a baby is
born. Overall, as I have overlooked feminism, it is only women who can,
at the end of the day, have the true rewarding feeling of joy and ecstasy from
that hard, sacred labor.

Midwife at Auschwitz: the story of Stanislawa Leszczynska

...Just one short story :

One of the more fortunate inmates, Maria Saloman, gives us her impressions of Stanislawa: "For weeks she never had a chance to lie down. She sometimes sat down near a patient on the oven, dozed for a moment, but soon jumped up and ran to one of the moaning women. . . . When Mrs. Leszczynska first approached me, I knew that everything would be alright. I do not know why, but this was so. My baby managed to last three months in the camp, but seemed doomed to die of starvation. I was completely devoid of milk. 'Mother' somehow found two women to wet-nurse my baby, an Estonian and a Russian. To this day I do not know at what price [she did this]. My Liz owes her life to Stanislawa Leszczynska. I cannot think of her without tears coming to my eyes."

Stanislawa displayed as much common sense as courage. One survivor tells how she would procure water and, on occasions, a herbal brew which she used to wash the infants. Having to use the same water for all the babies, Stanislawa washed the healthy children followed by the sick ones so as not to infect the former. Kazimera Bogdanska explains that she was unable to nurse her tiny daughter. Nevertheless, Stanislawa informed her that she should still give the child an empty breast "so the glands would not stop working." "Mother was right," says Kazimera, "How lucky I was that I believed her. When liberty came in January 1945 and I was taken to a real hospital (since I had typhoid fever) the doctor allowed me to continue to give my child my breast devoid of milk. After some time milk returned. My daughter began to gain weight. . . . She started to become round and rosy cheeked. . . . Mother's wisdom and faith saved my only child."

While standing inside the college secretary’s office on Friday passing some admission requirements, I felt something inside my chest explode as if a dam had broken, and exultation flooded through my body down to the last of my hairs on my pinkie toe. I would rather not look back to February when, driving quietly on a dark and starry highway, a dear, dear friend from work texted the most incredulous bit of news: I had passed the entrance exams for the sole law school that I had applied for. My poor mind does somersaults every time I prod that memory, or of the frantic 60-to-180 kph driving speed increase to verify the info at the nearest Internet connection, or of the HECK-NO-ARE-YOU-FREAKING-PULLING-MY-LEG-MR.-WEBMASTER moment I actually saw it on the college homepage with my similarly unbelieving (I would say even a tad bit more than myself) but on-the-whole supportive sister peeking breathlessly over my shoulder. I would rather not remember, because I would be entering a mental institution instead of an academic one. I will remember fondly, however, my extreme anxiety in taking the test that I arrived rather early for the examinations. I was so early I arrived at the examination venue a week before it started. Still, the thought of actually entering law school has sobered me up some, and I know that the challenges of the future are, to date, the greatest ones of my existence.

There have been so many circumstances that had seemingly conspired to bring me to this point, some of them at turns heartbreaking, delightful and even mystifying. I’ll share with you, my dear reader, one of the most eerie. When my mother was a single, bespectacled and rail-thin lass, her father told her that in one of her pregnancies, she would dream of him, and that the baby would be a boy. And that he would become a lawyer when he grew up. How’s that for cold logic? I almost wish my mother hadn’t told me because now I would have to battle with the Fates and the memory of my grandfather in addition to the law school gods. (Can you tell I’m excited to see the Clash of the Titans?) Now, I think my younger brother still has two years ahead of him to decide to become a lawyer himself in case I trip up. But I digress.

I’ve actually been practicing getting only three hours of sleep for three days straight in preparation for reading cases during all-nighters. Okay, maybe I could get taken off the enrolment list for saying something as smart as that. But reading the news about the express disregard of the Constitution through the Supreme Court ruling for midnight appointments and the flipflopping on the FASAP case, I can hardly wait for school to begin. I love a good fight when I see one. This June, my friend, all bets are off.

Koalas have a slow metabolic rate due to their high-fiber, low nutrient diet. Because they store little or no fat, koalas must adopt strategies that conserve energy. Sleeping is one of them.
Koalas sleep for up to 16 hours per day in order to conserve energy.
A very slow metabolic rate optimizes its energy requirements and allows koalas to retain food within their digestive system for a relatively long period of time, maximizing the amount of extracted energy.
The young koala drinks only mother's milk for the first six to seven months.
At about 30 weeks, it begins to feed upon a substance called "pap" which the mother produces in addition to milk. Pap is a specialized form of droppings, which forms an important part of the young koala's diet, allowing it to make the transition from milk to eucalyptus leaves.
Pap is soft and runny. It allows the mother to pass on micro-organisms from her digestive system.
The young koala continues to take milk from its mother until it is about a year old, but as it can no longer fit in the pouch, the mother's teat elongates to protrude from the pouch opening.
Eventually young koala begins to feed upon fresh leaves as it rides on mother's back.
